[00:04] bryce_, xrender works on lucid 10.04.2 [00:04] want me to bisect maverick dailies and alphas? === yofel_ is now known as yofel === schmidtm_ is now known as schmidtm [19:05] hi [19:05] i cannot install nvidia-current, here's a fresh jockey.log: http://paste2.org/p/1272453 [19:05] i haven't managed to install it for at least three versions of ubuntu [19:06] logfile was removed before starting jockey and then copied after trying (and failing) to install it [19:09] looks like it did install [19:09] bjsnider: it pops up a message box, telling me 'failed to install, see log file' [19:09] and then jockey says 'driver was just disabled, is already in use' or something along that line [19:10] and when i start jockey again, it says 'a different version of this driver is in use' [19:11] can you pastebin glxinfo? [19:11] and dkms status [19:12] dkms seems to have built fine from the log, but: [19:12] 2011-02-27 20:03:34,054 ERROR: update-alternatives: warning: skip creation of /usr/lib32/vdpau/libvdpau_nvidia.so.1 because associated file /usr/lib32/nvidia-current/vdpau/libvdpau_nvidia.so.1 (of link group gl_conf) doesn't exist. [19:12] bjsnider: yeah, can do [19:13] bjsnider: http://paste2.org/p/1272461 [19:13] yofel, known error message. it is inconsequential [19:13] ah [19:13] bjsnider: http://paste2.org/p/1272462 [19:14] knittl, can you start nvidia-settings without an error message? [19:14] why would something inconsequential be logged as "ERROR" though? [19:14] bjsnider: no, i'm running nouveau atm [19:14] $ lsmod|grep video [19:14] video 18951 1 nouveau [19:14] knittl: can you pastebin your xorg.conf? [19:15] $ ls /etc/X11/xorg.conf [19:15] ls: cannot access /etc/X11/xorg.conf: No such file or directory [19:15] knittl, please install nvidia-current through jockey and reboot [19:15] no xorg.conf here [19:15] yofel, ask pitti [19:15] it's a logging issue but it's no big deal [19:15] k [19:16] should i generate a new xorg.conf? [19:16] using nvidia-xconfig? [19:16] jockey will do that for you [19:16] you can check before you reboot [19:16] bjsnider: read 5 lines above [19:16] there's no xorg.conf [19:17] install nvidia-current through jockey [19:17] (i'm using natty btw, but this issue has bugged me since nvidia-current was introduced) [19:17] bjsnider: i did. well, i *tried* [19:17] i don't care if you get an error message [19:17] bjsnider: i start jockey. i select nvidia-current and click install [19:18] knittl, have you done a wipe and reload since before lucid? [19:18] it installs, gives an error/warning (you don't care, ok. i wouldn't care if it was a bogus message) [19:18] i close jockey and there's still no xorg.conf [19:18] it probably is a bogus message [19:19] ok, you can use nvidia-xconfig [19:19] i think i had to reinstall once, because my root file system was damaged [19:19] knittl@kbook:~$ jockey-gtk [19:19] knittl@kbook:~$ # told jockey to install nvidia-current [19:19] knittl@kbook:~$ ls /etc/X11/xorg.conf [19:19] ls: cannot access /etc/X11/xorg.conf: No such file or directory [19:20] i'll use -xconfig [19:20] ok, create the file yourself and i'll pastebin what should be in it [19:20] * knittl rebooting [19:26] woohoo, i'm in X [19:26] with -current [19:26] but my external monitor is currently ~100 km north [19:27] knittl, are you on i386 or amd64? [19:27] 32bit [19:27] of course [19:27] jockey still tries to tell me 'a different version of this driver is in use' [19:27] and can you do glxinfo again? [19:27] bjsnider: 32bit/i386 [19:28] sure [19:28] just a sec [19:29] http://paste2.org/p/1272487 [19:29] nvidia-current has always worked with a single monitor here (laptop screen) [19:29] and you're able to launch nvidia-settings without issue [19:29] most of the time i had to install it manually with apt-get though [19:29] yes [19:31] well, i thought this bug had been fixed [19:31] which bug exactly? [19:31] obviously jockey exited because of meaningless warnings without setting up your xorg.conf and telling you the driver was activated [19:31] it still believes the driver is not activated [19:32] knittl, the errors on lines 340 and 341of your jockey log would only happen on an i386 system. [19:33] perhaps it's been under the radar because not many people still use i386 [19:33] bjsnider: http://www.thehappy.de/neo/jockey-nvidia-current.png [19:35] jockey's message to you is just a by-product of the real issue [19:35] jockey does only recognize amd64 drivers? oO [19:37] knittl, sounds like it's bug 552653 [19:37] Launchpad bug 552653 in jockey (Ubuntu) "[Lucid] Jockey gives message that it failed to install nvidia hardware driver (affects: 49) (dups: 8) (heat: 274)" [Medium,Fix released] https://launchpad.net/bugs/552653 [19:37] i'm subscribed to that bug ^^ [19:40] knittl, did you use the nvidia-installer at some point? [19:41] not since i had to reinstall ubuntu. iirc [19:41] well you should talk to tseliot about this tomorrow [19:41] he'll be here in the morning [19:42] i've talked to him a lot of times already :D [19:42] but ok. maybe the day after tomorrow, i won't have much time tomorrow [19:42] about this issue? [19:42] about jockey failing and about my second monitor not being managed [19:44] maybe 270 fixes the monitor issue. i don't care much about jockey failing as long as the driver works :D
