[03:02] What would be the best way to go about getting Cinelerra included in the next release? [03:03] DeusQain: sudo apt-get install cinelerra ;) [03:05] while you are very accurate on how to install said software. You didn't answer my question. [03:05] DeusQain: i was hoping that would imply an answer though ;) [03:06] i dont think its going to happen [03:06] but, you can ask over in #ubuntustudio-devel [03:06] and on the mailing list [03:06] excellent. [03:06] thank you. === jussi01 is now known as Guest39611 === Guest39611 is now known as jussi01 === jussi01 is now known as Guest24446 === Guest24446 is now known as jussi01 [17:30] I have fluidsynth and jackd running. I can hear all bells and whistles OK when using ZynAddSubFX with mouse. I hear nothing when I try to use my USB Midi kbd (keyrig 49). I expected to see that in the left side of MIDI tab of qjackctl connections but its empty. lsusb recognises the keyboard. Any ideas what I am missing here or how to troubleshoot? === jussi01_ is now known as jussi [17:30] for example, is there some lower level way to see whether the kbd sends some midi events or not? [18:16] my earlier case is closed: now my keyboard works. I was on wrong midi channel. [19:49] mlpug: COOL [19:50] there was a great package for that [19:50] i saw ailo suggest it [19:50] reads midi events [20:29] is there a list of sound cards that work well with ubuntu? [20:29] Strangebrew: i can tell you a few places to look [20:29] that would be great [20:29] http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Main [20:30] http://www.ffado.org/?q=devicesupport/list [20:30] other than that, i would say try and find someone useing the device [20:31] the presonus firepod [20:31] now the FP-10 [20:31] works great out of the box [20:31] thanks! i'm kinda new so i'm looking for something cheap( less than 350$) [20:31] the zoom H4 is pretty sweet [20:31] the maudio delta 1010lts [20:31] out of the box [20:31] and cheap [20:32] the focusrite saphirePRO40 [20:32] ^^ thats probably the most bang for the buck [20:32] oh great , thank you so much! i will check those [20:32] you have to tweak a bit to get it working [20:32] Strangebrew: also, #opensourcemusicians [20:32] if you have a specific device [20:32] might find someone using it there [20:32] i hear about the maudio fastracks [20:32] and cant remember which are good [20:33] i have line 6 toneport which doesnt seem to work [20:33] USB ? [20:33] yeah [20:33] you can try running lsusb [20:33] see if you see it there [20:33] ^^ thats in a terminal [20:33] then [20:33] the drivers are installed and i can see it in the sound preferneces [20:33] aplay -l [20:33] but no sound coming in [20:33] and arecord -l [20:34] IF you see the device in those locations [20:34] you have a pretty good chance [20:35] yeah, but something must be wrong with the device..i cant see any signal on the input [20:35] Strangebrew: but you see the device? [20:35] all those places? [20:35] in sound pref [20:35] only checked there [20:36] check those [20:36] then, try running alsamixer [20:36] ok just a minute [20:37] btw, i'm on ubuntu now (not ubuntustudio)... [20:38] yeah, ubuntu=ubuntustudio [20:38] you have JACK right? [20:39] JACK? not sure, havent downloaded it myself [20:40] i'll look for it [20:40] Strangebrew: you'll want that [20:40] sudo apt-get install qjackctl [20:40] and read through the dependencies [20:40] should see jack2 or jackd [20:40] and others [20:41] downloading qjackct now [20:42] Strangebrew: and JACK right? [20:42] you saw that in the list too? [20:42] maybe 20 packages or so right? [20:42] nope only 10:\ [20:42] and jackd wandt there [20:42] probably right [20:42] hmmm [20:42] wasnt [20:43] will see... [20:43] maybe it will be fine, ill check it [20:43] run [20:43] sudo apt-get install jackd [20:43] when that install is done [20:44] running [20:45] the input level still doesnt show a thing:\ [20:46] right [20:46] dont worry about that yet [20:46] do i need to restart something? [20:46] Strangebrew: you'll want to learn how to use jack [20:46] its not trivial [20:47] where can i read about it? [20:47] but it is really where the 'magic' of linux audio happens [20:47] well, http://jackaudio.org/ [20:47] for a start [20:47] but, asking in here, and that other channel i linked [20:47] anyhow [20:47] Strangebrew: open a terminal [20:47] ans type [20:47] sudo qjackctl [20:48] try hitting the start button [20:48] and tell me what happens? [20:49] well i see RT with changing precentages right to it [20:49] Strangebrew: cool [20:50] ok hit the stop button [20:50] then, when it has stopped [20:50] hit quit [20:50] done [20:50] then, start it as normal user [20:50] either qjackctl [20:50] or in the menu [20:50] jack control [20:50] and try hitting start again [20:51] same situation [20:51] cool [20:51] no errors [20:51] just running? [20:51] right? [20:51] nope [20:51] right [20:51] awesome [20:51] ok, that is JACK [20:51] running with your internal sound card [20:51] you'll probably see an xrun here and there [20:51] little red #'s [20:52] in the jack control panel [20:52] BUT, dont worry about that right now [20:52] what we are going to do is [20:52] stop jack [20:52] with the stop button [20:52] on jack contol there [20:52] then, hit the setup button [20:52] and lets look for the line6 [20:52] Strangebrew: jack control = qjackctl [20:52] a GUI frontend to JACK [20:53] for setting it up [20:53] and running it [20:53] *and stopping it [20:53] ok [20:53] so i need to look for the line 6 driver in the setup? [20:53] OK... [20:54] you see 'driver' [20:54] that will need to stay set to ALSA [20:54] but [20:54] under that [20:54] you see hw:0 [20:54] actually... [20:54] before we do that [20:54] up at the top [20:54] you see preset name [20:54] yep [20:54] go in there and name this preset 'working' [20:55] and save it [20:55] THEN [20:55] name it line6 and save it again [20:55] and lets mess with the line6 one [20:55] and you can always come back to working [20:55] :) [20:55] good idea:) [20:56] so, i need to try all the interfaces available? [20:56] OK [20:56] so in the line6 preset [20:56] under the ALSA driver setting [20:56] you see hw:0 [20:56] and an arrow point down [20:57] there is also an arrow pointing right [20:57] click both of those [20:57] and see if you see the line6 ? [20:58] yeah, on the right pointing arrow i see two options with UX1 Toneport [20:58] hw:1 and hw:1,0 [21:02] Strangebrew: really not much to do but experiment around [21:03] and try to get the line6 going [21:03] you'll need to learn a bit about JACK routing [21:03] like, opening ardour [21:03] and creating a track [21:03] and routing the line6 over to that track you make [21:03] or testing [21:03] for* [21:04] ok, i will look into jack, thank you so much holstein! you helped me alot [21:04] Strangebrew: anytime [21:04] IF you see it there [21:04] in JACK [21:04] i think you have a good chance of using it with JACK [21:04] and it working [21:04] and thats really what you want [21:05] its a different workflow from win or OSX usually [21:05] *unless you are using JACK in win or OSX [21:05] but, JACK is just awesome [21:05] and totally worth the learning curve [21:06] are you experienced with win music production software? [21:06] i used to use cubase [21:06] and ive been around a bunch of win and OSX in studios [21:06] protools or whatever [21:07] i dont have a lot of MIDI experience [21:07] and you prefer ubuntu from professional point of view ( or is it ideological, open-source)? [21:08] JACK is awesome [21:08] and ardour too [21:08] i personally prefer the software in everyway [21:08] not just because its open [21:08] i guess that i'm not a MIDI guy too, gonna use it for recording guitar and vocals [21:09] but, the workflow is more like a studio [21:09] for example [21:09] if i download a reverb [21:09] it shows up in JACK [21:09] and i use it [21:09] route whatever i want to it [21:09] with a virtual cable [21:09] just like the workflow in a studio [21:09] some software is interconnected like that in win and OSX [21:09] sounds nice [21:09] but, not to this degree [21:10] is it always rock-solid? [21:10] of course not [21:10] but neither are the closed alternatives [21:11] well thats good to hear..i always thought that only open-source people are using those open-source software [21:12] im sure thats a big part of it [21:12] and the closed ones topped them [21:12] and i do like the ideals [21:12] in general [21:12] but, im also into everyone having the right tools for the job [21:12] and if that is pro-tools [21:12] or cubase [21:12] whatever [21:12] go for it [21:13] but, its not fair to say one platform or app is more capable [21:13] unless it actually is [21:13] glad to hear an open-mind opinion [21:13] mostly its opinion [21:13] like, for example [21:13] ardour hasnt had MIDI support [21:13] ardour 3.x will have it [21:13] that should be out in a couple months [21:14] but, MIDI folks can use JACK [21:14] but theres an alternative to ardour right? [21:14] and whatever MIDI sequencer they want [21:14] with ardour [21:14] oh [21:14] ok [21:14] Strangebrew: yeah, or a whole other DAW [21:14] BUT, if a midi guy preffered the workflow of something else [21:14] whatever [21:14] i cant argue with that [21:14] just dont tell me linux cant do it :) [21:15] :) [21:15] btw, where can i hear your music? [21:16] i just did a little solo bass thing [21:16] for the RPM challenge [21:16] and put it up and bandcamp [21:16] http://holstein.bandcamp.com/ [21:17] this is more what i do though [21:17] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RnThpo0Atk#t=2m50s [21:17] not my composition there though ^^ [21:17] thats the piano players tune [21:17] Strangebrew: you have some music around? [21:18] thats amazing holstein, now i'm sure i (potentially) can do what i want in linux [21:19] Strangebrew: theres more MIDI folk in that other channel [21:19] if you need [21:19] i dabble at best in that [21:19] nope..i'm just getting into recording seriously... i've got a jamman [21:19] AH [21:20] ive been messing with sooperlooper [21:20] you checked out zoe keating? [21:20] she really inspired me [21:20] on bandcamp? [21:20] dont know her [21:20] http://www.zoekeating.com/ [21:20] oh heh:) [21:20] she uses sooperlooper on OSX [21:20] will check that [21:20] i was learning sooperlooper [21:20] and i heard her stuff [21:20] sooperlooper is available on ubuntu? [21:21] and though, wonder what software she is useing [21:21] and its the same ;) [21:21] Strangebrew: yeah, its in the repos [21:21] all the ubuntustudio stuff is in the default repo now [21:21] you dont need to install ubuntustudio [21:21] just whatever software you want [21:21] !vanilla [21:21] To install Ubuntu Studio on top of a vanilla Ubuntu install, read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudio/Installation [21:23] oh good, seems a little complicated but i guess thats better than installing ubuntu all-over again [21:24] Strangebrew: well, you dont need all of those [21:24] or any of those [21:24] the metapackages are just a group of packages [21:24] i usually get [21:24] ubuntustudio-audio [21:24] and ubuntustudio-audio-plugins [21:24] sometimes the menu [21:25] and maybe a kernel [21:25] and the tweeks? [21:25] but, you can just install the software you want [21:25] as you go [21:25] Strangebrew: the network manager is not installed [21:25] in ubunutstudio [21:25] but, i wouldnt worry about that [21:25] unless you have trouble [21:25] Strangebrew: not many tweeks needed anymore [21:27] great, so i'll get on with that now:) [21:27] Strangebrew: :) [21:27] thanks again! [21:27] anytime
