[00:44] hi all, just replaced ubuntu with xubuntu and wondering how I go about mounting my windows partition like I can in gnome? [00:47] System > Gigolo [00:47] perfect, cheers [04:43] hola se habla español? [04:43] necesito ayuda [04:44] alguien habla español? [05:27] Aloo guyz and girlz. Just enjoying a little chat while installing Xubuntu :) [06:38] hi [06:38] where can I get a minimal version of Xubuntu? [06:39] what do you mean? [06:39] without all the stuff pre-installed [06:39] just Xorg, xubuntu, the ubuntu base, etc [06:40] same as ubuntu minimal [06:40] https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD <--- might this be it? [06:40] yes that [06:40] but with Xfce preconfigured and setup [06:40] there are no other disks with xfce than xubuntu [06:40] damn [06:41] you can install from minimal-cd and select xfce-desktop [06:41] or do minimal install and later install xfce4 and xfce4-goodies [06:41] will simply selecting all the same components on the minimal CD cause me to have the same exact thing as Xubuntu? [06:41] or does Xubuntu have any further tweaks.. [06:42] What I mean is.. [06:42] there are packages for xubuntu-artwork and xubuntu-default settings [06:42] is Xubuntu different in any way, or is it really just a selection of some packages [06:42] everything in xubuntu is in the repositories [06:42] ok [06:43] i just installed from xubuntu cd and removed programs i don't need [06:44] don’t you find the system to be a bit non-perfect after removal of many packages? [06:44] if you don't have netbook with 4GB HDD it isn't really problem [06:44] why would i? [06:44] they can leave some remnants, modify some stuff [06:44] they shouldn't [06:44] that's why we have package manager [06:45] I’ve tested in the past on Ubuntu [06:45] i think it's easier than gathering all the little programs you happen to need [06:45] remove all the packages so its the same as minimal [06:45] then compare the filesystem to minimal [06:45] theres a lot of “stuff” [06:45] just little bits of things. [06:46] if you had something other than basic ubuntu there has been left dependencies behind [06:46] or if you didn't really remove all [06:46] use aptitude, it removes everything [06:47] and/or do apt-get autoremove and apt-get clean [06:47] autoremove removes stuff that nothing depends on? [06:47] and the "goop" is needed for something [06:47] yup [06:48] goop? [06:48] anyway, i'm a bit of perfectionist and i can live with 5GB used root partition [06:48] the "overall stuff" [06:49] 5GB seems kinda big [06:49] it's nothing [06:49] well, thats 5x larger than my XP box’s install [06:50] win7 takes about 10GB bu just windows [06:50] add programs to that [06:51] compare to modern OS, not over ten years old [06:51] my Win7 is 2GB [06:51] i have 32G ssd and i still don't worry a bit [06:51] I use rt7lite [06:51] I was assuming Xubuntu would be a “lite” version [06:52] so if its a few times larger than my Windows 7 box which has a ton of stuff on it... [06:52] thats bad [06:52] bigger than your kinsa highly customized win7 [06:52] *kinda [06:52] You customized it to remove stuff on your copy though, right? [06:53] why would i [06:53] i just installed from xubuntu cd and removed programs i don't need [06:53] that isn't same as customizing os itself [06:54] if you really want minimal, do the minimal installation then [06:54] i removed software i don't use, i don't want them in my menus [08:49] Xubuntu 10.10 seems pretty buggy [08:49] I just installed it. I run -- Applications -> Games -> Quadrapassel [08:49] Nothing happens. [08:49] program does not start. [08:50] have you installed updates [08:50] Quadrapassel doesn't normally seem to work (for me) [08:52] installing updates now... will report after [08:52] Piggie: run quadrapassel via terminal, see what the error is [09:09] brook@ubuntu:~$ quadrapassel [09:09] failed to create drawable [09:09] Failed to initialise clutter: Unable to select the newly created GLX context [09:09] yeah.. it’s running in VMWare [09:09] with VMWare tools installed [09:09] in windows 7 at least, with vmware, gl/d3d, aero, etc all work accelerated [09:13] I was assuming that acceleration would work in vmware. [09:13] lol... [09:14] after the updates finished installing, there’s a “restart” button [09:14] I press it. Nothing happens [12:08] Hi. I deleted gnome from my ubuntu and tried out xfce4.8. I'm experiencing a few issues: In the setting dialog for the autostart jobs, the buttons for "Edit" and "Delete" are greyed out - only one job (made by me) can be modified. Is this normal? [14:17] Hello [14:17] I'm a newbie on Xubuntu... I don't find any Suspend or Hibernate button in the "log out" window... is there a way to have them ? [14:18] I have xubuntu 10.10 [14:20] I don't have checkboxes for that in Applications > Settings > Settings Manager > Sessions and Startup [17:13] /usr/share/applications ....how to make these Launchers? [17:15] or any type of them... i just want to make jDownloader apper in menu [17:21] done it... created Launcher on desktop... moved it to /usr/share/applications.. and edited it with mousepad [18:02] hello. what could be the best way of sharing a folder on my network. i'm using 10.10. thank you [18:02] ? [18:03] through gigolo? [18:03] i'm kinda new in xubuntu... [18:10] hello. what could be the best way of sharing a folder on my network?? [18:10] what sort of network? [18:10] i don't have the "sharing options" item on the right-click menu [18:11] neither "shared folders" under "System" [18:11] home network, drc [18:12] share to windows machines or linux? [18:12] a mac, actually [18:14] should i install this "Samba" app? [18:14] i don't know what kind of share it supports but sshfs should be available [18:15] well,i can reach windows folders, on my mac [18:15] install openssh-server to xubuntu and http://superjared.com/entry/mount-ssh-connection-os-x/ [18:15] there's this windows pc, on this network [18:15] then samba should wor too [18:15] !smb [18:15] Samba is the way to cooperate with Windows environments. Links with more info: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MountWindowsSharesPermanently and https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/serverguide/C/windows-networking.html - Samba can be administered via the web with SWAT. [18:16] okay [18:17] thank you guys! [20:51] I made a boot-able usb thumb drive of 10.10 from a virtual machine through windows7. If i choose "install Xubuntu" when i boot from the usb drive, will this install xubuntu on the usb drive only or will it override my windows 7 on the hdd? === drc is now known as Sam-the-Eagle === Sam-the-Eagle is now known as drc [21:08] I made a boot-able usb thumb drive of 10.10 from a virtual machine through windows7.
