Amaranthchrisccoulson: any update on the upload for bug 724324?01:02
ubot2Launchpad bug 724324 in gnome-power-manager "FFE: Add support to g-p-m for controlling keyboard backlight via upower in natty" [Wishlist,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/72432401:02
chrisccoulsonAmaranth, it's funny you should ask that. i'm just doing a test build of it now ;)01:03
Amaranthchrisccoulson: I just did a test build and verified the feature actually works :)01:03
chrisccoulsonoh, ok. thanks :)01:03
chrisccoulsoni'll just upload it then01:03

RAOFAnyone around to sponsor a partial fix for the mesa segfault that's plaguing software-centre?03:32
kenvandineRAOF, how risky is it?03:35
kenvandinei can sponsor it... but know very little about mesa :)03:35
RAOFkenvandine: Not terribly risky.03:35
RAOFWell… on IA32.03:35
RAOFOn amd64 it's got some shiny new assembler in the dispatch code, but that works for me and I see no reason why it won't work for everyone else, too :)03:36
kenvandinehehe.. famous last words03:36
kenvandinepoint me to it please :)03:36
TheMusokenvandine: Do you have upload privs for mesa?03:39
kenvandineyup03:39
* TheMuso can do it if kenvandine can't.03:39
kenvandinecore-dev03:39
TheMusoah ok forgot about that. :)03:39
kenvandinei avoid X as a rule though... so if you feel more comfortable :)03:40
kenvandineTheMuso, and actually it isn't midnight for you either :)03:40
TheMusoI have done it a few times, so if you don't feel comfortable...03:40
TheMusokenvandine: THis is true.03:40
kenvandine:)03:40
* kenvandine ducks that one03:40
RAOFhttp://cooperteam.net/Packages03:42
RAOFIf you'd like to do some pre-upload testing I can push my builds there, too.03:43
TheMusoI'm happy to build it. What is the problem exactly? I am only running amd64.03:44
RAOFThe problem is bug #259219 - there's a minimal reproducing test-case on that bug.03:45
ubot2Launchpad bug 259219 in mesa "Broken TLS support in libGL.so AKA: software-center crashed with SIGSEGV in __cxa_allocate_exception()" [High,In progress] https://launchpad.net/bugs/25921903:45
RAOFThe mesa I've got there isn't a complete fix.  Or, rather, it is a fix for that bug, but disables the optimised IA32 assembler because I haven't yet got that working.03:46
RAOFBut that bug's attracting duplicates at an annoying rate, so I think it's time to fix it with a performance regression now and keep working on making the IA32 assembler work with a little less time pressure.03:47
TheMusoRight, so does it affect amd64?03:47
TheMusoI'll trust your testing, I'll just review the patch.03:47
RAOFIt affects everything - it's using an incorrect TLS model, when libGL is dlopen'd libstdc++ doesn't get its TLS stuff initialised correctly and when something hits that codepath (stream IO and exception handling seem to hit it) it SEGVs.03:51
RAOFThe patch in the upload is only complete for amd64, though.  It's *fixed* for IA32, but at the cost of a performance regression because it disables the optimised assembler.03:53
RAOF(And there's a performance regression on amd64, too, but it's smaller and (possibly) mandatory; the proper TLS model needs to do more work ☺)03:55
TheMusook03:59
TheMusoRAOF: uploaded04:57
RAOFSweet, thanks.04:58
TheMusonp05:00
nnonixI'm seeing the Gnome3 Team in Launchpad. Would this ppa be the best route to a native Gnome 3 experience under natty?05:26
AmaranthRAOF: Do the fglrx and nvidia libGL.so versions handle this correctly? Oh, they probably just don't use C++, right?06:44
Amaranthwhoa late06:44
pittiGood morning07:05
* bryceh_ waves07:08
pittihey bryceh_, how are you?07:09
bryceh_pitti, good, you?07:10
pittiI'm great (except for aching muscles from the weekend :) )07:10
bryceh_pitti, this evening we made a list of all the words my son can say now, and tallied 43 words!07:10
pitti"one word a day", heh?07:11
bryceh_we've been teaching him to say 'please' (he gets it as 'pleh'... close enough)07:12
bryceh_unfortunately I've created a monster07:12
bryceh_he and I feed the fish every night and I've been letting him help lately07:12
bryceh_so tonight we finished and he wanted to feed them again!  "pleh!  pleh! pleh!"07:12
bryceh_pitti, been out cycling or something?07:14
pittibryceh_: no, helped a friend moving on Saturday, and on Sun we had an all-day Taekwondo camp07:14
pittiand last night the usual regular TKD training as well07:14
bryceh_pitti, or just sore from all the blog activity over the w-e?  ;-)07:15
pittiI did go for some cycling, but not much07:15
pittibryceh_: that's what makes my heart hurt, not my legs :(07:15
bryceh_pitti, yep too true07:15
bryceh_pitti, currently I'm mulling over bug 702090 which seems stuck07:16
ubot2Launchpad bug 702090 in xserver-xorg-video-intel "i965gm GPU lockup if vesafb is left loaded (EIR: 0x00000010 PGTBL_ER: 0x00000100) - *ERROR* EIR stuck: 0x00000010, masking" [High,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/70209007:16
bryceh_pitti, this has tons of dupes and apw posted a kernel with a fix, and I've posted directions to test it but there's not been any response.  It's very troubling07:17
bryceh_(no response except just scads more dupe bugs getting filed)07:17
bryceh_pitti, any advice?07:17
Amaranthbryceh_: oh, I forgot about the workaround kernel to test07:25
SweetsharkMorning.07:29
tjaaltonbryceh_: I have such a machine, but the lockups i was seeing stopped when mesa 7.10.1 was uploaded07:38
tjaaltonused to hang when the screen blanked07:38
bryceh_hmm07:41
tjaaltonnot sure it's the same though07:41
tjaalton+bug07:41
tjaaltonvesafb isn't loaded :)07:42
bryceh_tjaalton, yeah these particular hangs (pseudo-hangs) actually seem not to lock the gpu permanently most of the time, they just trip apport but -intel resets07:42
tjaaltonit was able to revive the machine by killing X from a VT07:42
tjaalton*I07:42
bryceh_tjaalton, interesting, usually with gpu lockups that doesn't help07:43
tjaaltonmaybe it wasn't really locked up07:43
tjaaltonof course I have no logs to prove either way anymore07:43
bryceh_dah, mystery bugs gotta love em07:44
tjaaltonwell, fixed by mesa anyway :)07:44
bryceh_heh speaking of freezes I notice my sandybridge box has frozen while I wasn't looking... intriguing07:47
tjaaltonstill waiting for sb boards to arrive to the shelves..07:48
bryceh_got phoned by newegg that they have a replacement board for me... need to call them back07:49
bryceh_root@albagensia:/usr/share/apport# intel_gpu_dump07:49
bryceh_Couldn't map MMIO region: No such file or directory07:49
bryceh_that's odd07:49
tjaaltonis the tool sb-aware?07:50
bryceh_far as I know.  Hmm, nada in i915_error_state either07:50
didrocksgood morning07:50
bryceh_yes, it's sb aware; we get plenty of gpu lockup bug reports for sandybridge07:50
bryceh_didrocks, heya!07:51
didrockshey bryceh_! How are you?07:51
bryceh_didrocks, good, you?07:51
pittibonjour didrocks07:51
didrockspitti: Guten morgen07:53
didrocksbryceh_: very good, thanks :)07:53
bryceh_tjaalton, aha... just killing X and relogging in was enough to get it back.  So maybe wasn't a gpu lockup at all?  was running unity on it so maybe that was what froze?07:55
tjaaltonbryceh_: yeah it might be that it just doesn't come back from the blanked state?07:55
tjaaltonhmm actually, here it also just froze without blanking07:55
bryceh_wasn't actually blanked... the windows were displayed properly and the mouse cursor moved, just clicking or using keyboard didn't do anything07:56
tjaaltonbut killing X from the vt "fixed" it07:56
bryceh_fwiw, this is with the new X bits from the ubuntu-x-swat ppa07:56
tjaaltonbryceh_: invisible windows maybe?07:56
tjaaltonthere's not much new07:56
bryceh_I should have checked if the clock updated07:57
bryceh_but doing a chvt didn't restore it, and just left the screen black07:57
tjaaltonok it was something else then07:57
pittibryceh_: ugh, read the bug now08:00
bryceh_everyone <3's  -intel08:00
pittibryceh_: advice> I wish, but I'm afraid I don't know enough about these graphics drivers to be of help here :/08:01
pittibryceh_: so vesafb actually needs to get unloaded when intel is being loaded?08:01
pittior is the problem that vesafb is getting loaded at all (instead of using direct DRM)?08:01
tjaaltonI see vesafb on my dmesg, but it's not loaded anymore08:02
bryceh_pitti, well I was more looking for advice on how to stir people up to give feedback08:02
pittitjaalton: ah, right08:02
bryceh_the issue itself is pretty clear - the vesafb module is loaded at boot in case no drm drivers are available, and then (supposed to be) unloaded in favor of the drm driver if found08:02
pitticurious that it only affects intel, though; does the radeon driver do the unloading properly?08:03
bryceh_however there's either a timing issue or something's holding onto vesafb too long (grub?) and so intel collides with it and that locks the gpu08:03
pittibut the bug with all its dupes should have a fair amount of subscribers now08:03
bryceh_pitti, intel is able to reset the gpu most of the time and keep on truckin' but it does trigger apport so we get a bug report (lots actually)08:04
bryceh_pitti, indeed08:04
bryceh_pitti, in fact we do see a few bugs here and there for -nouveau and -ati that seem to also be conflicts with vesafb08:05
bryceh_but at a *much* lower rate08:05
bryceh_my guess is something about how the -intel driver is catching the hang and resetting the gpu compounds the issue08:05
bryceh_or else -intel is just buggier than the other drivers08:06
pittibryceh_: or radeon doesn't catch the hang via apport and thus we just don't hear about it (so much)?08:07
bryceh_pitti, possibly08:08
RAOFAmaranth: Who knows what TLS model nvidia and fglrx use, or even *if* they use TLS.08:13
RAOFActually, I guess readelf would tell me.08:13
RAOFIncidentally, is there a good GUI for gdb anywhere in the archives?  Wandering through the disassembly would work much better with one, I feel.08:15
SweetsharkRAOF: advertisement from my sun/orcle times: Netbeans might be a decent gdb frontend (as far as that is possible)08:16
pittiRAOF: I generally like nemiver quite a lot08:36
pittiRAOF: doesn't quite work with debugging X.org server, of course :)08:36
RAOFWell, what I *really* want is the ability to keep the disassembly view up as I single-step through the instructions.08:38
RAOFHm, and register contents would be nice, too.08:44
RAOFLooks like nemiver might be good.08:45
pittiRAOF: I haven't tried nemiver with assembly, but for normal C it's navigation, mouse-over values, variable view etc. are quite fine08:52
pittiand compared to eclipse & co it's ultra-lightweight :)08:52
RAOFDoes it handle gdb remoting?08:53
pittiI don't know08:53
RAOFIt's installing anyway.08:53
pittiRAOF: you can get a refund for it if you don't like it, anyway :)08:54
* RAOF is slightly confused. Why doesn't ‘jmp *0x804f09c’ jump to 0x804f09c?08:54
pittiindirect addressing?08:55
RAOF...08:55
RAOFOf course.08:55
pittiat least that's what * used to mean in assembly I used to look at a thousand years ago08:55
pittii. e. "jump to the address that is stored at this pointer"?08:55
RAOFYeah, thanks.  I misread that :)08:56
RAOFBecause it would clearly be too much to have indirect immediate addressing have the same syntax as indirect *register* addressing.08:56
RAOFThat would just be madness.08:57
pittinonononono08:57
pittiRAOF: can you imagine by how much assembly programmer's salaries would drop if this stuff would suddenly get *logical*?08:57
seb128hey desktopers08:57
pittiRAOF: indirect register was something like add [ax], ..., wasn't it?08:58
RAOFHey seb!08:58
RAOFYou're thinking intel syntax.  AT&T is (%eax) :)08:58
pittiRAOF: you know, my last endeavours with assembly was with Borland C++ 3.1 on DOS ..08:59
pittino crazy AT&T syntax there08:59
bryceh_morning seb :-)08:59
bryceh_ahhh Borland09:00
pittiRAOF: actually no, it was for the Atmel 4414 class of microcontrollers; but their assembly is just awesome09:00
pittiregular syntax, RISC, tons of uniformly usable registers, etc.09:00
Sweetsharki386 asm is crazy and annoying no matter which syntax is used. Me want SPARC for everyone.09:01
RAOFx86-64 is much nicer.09:01
RAOFAnd the ABI actually passes parameters in registers!09:01
Sweetsharkbut i guess that battle is lost already.09:01
SweetsharkRAOF: you mean like SPARC did for ages already? ;)09:02
RAOFSweetshark: Actually, if you'd *like* to touch some SPARC assembly, mesa could use some dispatch love.09:02
RAOFSweetshark: SPARC is the other architecture that has some hand-tuned assembly in the dispatch code, and I'm not planning to fix it :)09:02
SweetsharkRAOF: I have not touched SPARC for some time and have no hardware for it.09:03
pittiwho needs hardware when he has qemu-user09:04
SweetsharkRAOF: Ill take a look at it once LO is perfect and there is nothing to be done there.09:04
RAOFYou'll get to play with SPARC assembly *and* learn about the TLS ABI!09:04
pittiSweetshark: is that before or after the HURD release or the year of the Linux desktop? :-)09:04
Sweetsharkafter the year of the Linux desktop, but before Duke Nukem Forever and HURD releases ...09:05
pittiah, ok; always good to have a solid plan09:05
RAOFHey, Duke Nukem Forever has a release date!09:05
SweetsharkRAOF: a release date is not a release09:06
pittiRAOF: but they can't release, they are still blocked on figuring out some mesa bugs on sparc09:06
RAOF:)09:06
* pitti STFUs and goes back to do something sensible09:06
bryceh_hehe09:07
seb128pitti, nice scour upload ;-)09:25

DavieyHello!  Does anyone have an idea why mysql server is now showing as a login option in GDM greeter in Natty?  I'm scratching my head if it's something that got lost in the last mysql merge, or something that has changed in gnome.. thanks :)10:14
pittiDaviey: !?!10:14
pittiDaviey: does /usr/share/xsessions/ have anythign mysql'ish for you?10:15
sorenDaviey: Is mysql run from upstart these days?10:15
seb128Daviey, as an user or as an option?10:15
Davieysoren, believe so10:16
Davieyone mo10:16
pittiDaviey: also, please check grep ^Session ~/.dmrc10:16
sorenDaviey: Using su to switch to mysql?10:16
sorenDaviey: Or does mysql do that on its own?10:16
seb128is that a session or an user?10:16
Davieypitti, grep for mysql returns null10:16
pittiah, I guess he means user10:16
seb128"option" is not very obvious10:16
pittiDaviey: do you see it in the user list or in the sessino chooser in teh panel at the bottom?10:16
seb128Daviey, ck-history --frequent list it?10:16
Daviey$ grep ^Session ~/.dmrc10:17
DavieySession=gnome10:17
Davieypitti, mysql has an invalid $home btw.10:17
pittiDaviey: so I guess you mean you see it as an user10:17
Daviey /etc/passwd - mysql:x:117:128:MySQL Server,,,:/nonexistent:/bin/false10:17
Davieyseb128, http://pb.daviey.com/6znJ/raw/10:18
pittiweird, gdm has a patch to sort out users with id < 100010:18
seb128Daviey, you still didn't reply on where it's listed as an option, do you mean as an user?10:18
Davieypitti, I see it as a user, which i could possibly log in as10:18
Davieyseb128, ^ ?10:19
seb128pitti, I think I've read someone saying that it doesn't apply this filtering to the ck-history users10:19
pittigdm bug then10:19
seb128pitti, no, ck bug10:19
DavieyAh!10:19
seb128ck-history shouldn't list it10:19
seb128well bug on both I guess10:19
sorenDaviey: Is there any chance you've sudo'ed to mysql recently?10:19
pittiseb128: you mean bug 395281?10:19
ubot2Launchpad bug 395281 in gdm "pam_ck_connector.so is called for non-login sessions" [Low,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/39528110:19
seb128pitti, yes...10:20
sorenDaviey: Or su'ed?10:20
Davieyseb128, Hmm, if that was the case, wouldn't puppet also be a login user?10:20
pittiseb128: but 2 logins sounds very plausible for doing "su mysql"10:20
pittiseb128: it's not the daemon start10:20
sorenDaviey: Nova turns up on gdm for me, too, because we run it with su from upstart. su registers a pam session.10:20
Davieyah!10:21
sorenIt's very annoying.10:21
Davieymysql upstart conf - http://pb.daviey.com/R3O0/raw/10:21
sorenDaviey: That should be fine.10:22
sorenDaviey: No use of su in sight.10:22
seb128pitti, well in any case I didn't check but people mentioned gdm doesn't do the id filter on ck-history lists10:22
seb128pitti, we should maybe fix that...10:22
pittiright10:22
Davieyseb128, But that doesn't explain why i don't see puppet as a login user in gdm greeter10:23
Davieysurely if it was that, i'd see it aswell.10:23
seb128is it listed by ck-history --frequent?10:24
seb128Daviey, well as pitti said you maybe did su mysql two times on this box?10:24
Davieyseb128, maybe as a maintainer script. :/10:24
DavieyI found it interesting that postgres is in /usr/share/gdm/gdm.schemas to not be shown.10:25
seb128bug #73491010:26
ubot2Launchpad bug 734910 in gdm "gdm greeter shows unwanted users" [Low,Incomplete] https://launchpad.net/bugs/73491010:26
seb128is similar10:26
Daviey(i've compared gdm.schemas on both maverick and natty, and they identical)10:26
seb128or bug #69603810:26
ubot2Launchpad bug 696038 in gdm "rabbitmq user appears in login list of users" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/69603810:26
seb128Daviey, well that list is a fixed list of users to ignore10:27
seb128but as pitti said before, all users with a system uid should be filtered out10:27
MezDaviey: what am I looking for?10:27
seb128without having to code the list of existing users in the schemas10:27
DavieyMez, We were talking about the mysql user showing up.10:28
Mezand ? the outcome is?10:31
DavieyMez, Still not quite sure, but based on two bugs - looks like a possible regression in gdm.10:31
seb128the reason is likely that someone logged it as mysql, i.e su mysql on the box10:32
seb128there is a gdm bug there though as well, it seems the uid filtering doesn't work as it should on ck-history lists10:32
seb128we will likely use bug #696038 to track that issue10:32
ubot2Launchpad bug 696038 in gdm "rabbitmq user appears in login list of users" [Low,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/69603810:32
Mezseb128: afaik, that doesn't work if the shell is set to /bin/false ?10:33
Mez(the su to the user)10:33
seb128Mez, there is also bug #39528110:33
ubot2Launchpad bug 395281 in gdm "pam_ck_connector.so is called for non-login sessions" [Low,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/39528110:33
seb128Mez, well there is different reason which could make the user be listed in the consolekit sessions10:33
seb128in any case we should filter users from those list out10:34
Davieyseb128, grepping my installed packages maintainer scripts for "su mysql"10:34
Davieynull return.10:34
MezDaviey: and sudo ?10:35
DavieyI would be quite suprised if a maintainer used sudo instead of su... :/10:35
Davieyempty set returned.10:35
MezDaviey: you never know - some people are idiots :D10:35
sorenDaviey: Look in /var/log/auth, perhaps?10:36
seb128Daviey, it's not trivial to grep for that, you could have su -c or something or "su $USER" with user defined before etc10:37
Davieysoren, http://pb.daviey.com/vWuL/raw/10:37
Mezpsst, Daviey, what pastebin are you using?10:37
seb128Daviey, Mez: in any case let's use bug #696038  for the fact that users with system uids are not filtered out as they should10:38
ubot2Launchpad bug 696038 in gdm "rabbitmq user appears in login list of users" [Low,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/69603810:38
seb128having that fixing in gdm will fix your issue10:38
seb128it doesn't matter much how mysql got a login session counted10:38
Davieyseb128, I grepped for " su ", that should be safe?10:38
sorenI thought ck-history would let you show the actual logins. Perhaps the times would provide a hint.10:38
seb128soren, ^ btw feel free to comment on that bug as well about your similar issue10:39
seb128soren, right, ck-history --log shows the list10:39
Davieyseb128, Do you consider 734910 and 696038 (the two from above) to be dupes?10:40
seb128Daviey, yes10:40
seb128Daviey, well I will use 69603810:40
seb128waiting on reply on the other bug but I will likely dup it10:40
Davieyseb128, ok, i added my output to both incase.10:41
* Daviey leaves it in your safe hands, if you want me for anything - feel free to ping.10:41
DavieyThanks for looking into it.10:42
seb128Daviey, thanks10:43
seb128Daviey, can you add you passwd lines for mysql and puppet to the bug?10:44
seb128it's a bit weird that mysql got listed but not puppet10:44
Davieythat is what i thought!10:44
DavieyI wonder if switching the UID's between puppet and mysql would make puppet show.10:46
seb128Daviey, what uid do they have?10:47
seb128are they listed in the same range?10:48
seb128hum, they are10:48
seb128I wonder if the broken user directory has something to do with it10:49
Davieymysql:x:117:128:MySQL Server,,,:/nonexistent:/bin/false10:49
Davieypuppet:x:116:127:Puppet configuration management daemon,,,:/var/lib/puppet:/bin/false10:49
seb128well from there is needs code debugging I guess10:50
seb128Daviey, thanks, we will ping you back if we need extra details10:50
Davieyseb128, thanks10:50

pittiseb128: woudl you have some time to fix bug 703230 ?13:30
ubot2Launchpad bug 703230 in pango1.0 ""rm: cannot remove `/usr/share/doc/libpango1.0-0': Is a directory" when updating to 1.28.3-4" [High,Triaged] https://launchpad.net/bugs/70323013:30
pittior rodrigo_ perhaps? ^13:31
seb128pitti, can do13:31
pittiI guess it's also a nice little packaging learning exercise13:31
seb128pitti, did debian fix it now? I got some bts emails about it but didn't read the discussion13:31
pittibite-size thing, but important for beta-1 upgrades13:31
pittiseb128: haven't checked yet13:31
seb128pitti, I will check13:31
seb128I've the emails there13:31
pittiseb128: merci13:31
seb128pitti, btw I was about to ping you for media-player-id13:31
seb128but seems you beat me to it ;-)13:32
pittihehe13:32
pittiseb128: I'll sync it in half a day when it hit the Debian mirror13:32
Laneyit's right to fix bug 735372 in libgnome2-common, yeah?13:32
ubot2Launchpad bug 735372 in banshee "Rhythmbox not Banshee is set as default media player in Natty" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/73537213:32
seb128pitti, did you check if the icon thing being commented has side effects?13:32
seb128Laney, no, desktop-file-utils has the defaults.list in Ubuntu13:33
pittiseb128: it'll fix the handling of photos on mobile phones again, as a workaround to bug 48152813:33
ubot2Launchpad bug 481528 in gvfs "Volumes with photo MIME type do not have a camera icon" [Low,Triaged] https://launchpad.net/bugs/48152813:33
pittiseb128: sorry, bug 65760913:33

Laneyseb128: ah ok, so that was just forgotten, thanks13:33
seb128pitti, but wasn't that added to fix wrong icon issues on some devices?13:33
Laneyjbicha: ^^^^13:33
pittiseb128: well, it's about nicer icons for some phones; I know it's a workaround, but it fixes much more than it breaks13:34
seb128pitti, ok, I just wanted to check it was not going to break another side13:34
seb128I don't remember the specifics but similar issues reversed ring a bell13:35
pittiseb128: I still have the optimistic hope that at some point I can get out of the "OMG RC bugs" rabbit hole, and find time to work on things like that..13:35
seb128rodrigo_, btw I Cc-ed you on a gnome-media, g-c-c bug with a one liner patch, would be nice if you could commit it to git13:36
jbichaseb128: isn't defaults.list different than the gconf default apps though?13:37
seb128jbicha, I didn't read the bug out of the title13:37
seb128jbicha, sorry in middle of other things13:38
jbichaseb128: np13:38
seb128jbicha, the libgnome .gconf-defaults thing is what will be used when using the key on your keyboard13:38
seb128seems fine to update that one13:39
pittididrocks: hm, I just tried booting the current desktop image on my wife's amd64/ATI machine, and alpha-3 back then on my dell mini 10; it still fails miserably and takes ages, I have to ctrl+alt+f1 and kill -9 -1, and re-login :/13:39
Laneythe bug is about gnome-default-applications-properties13:40
Laneybut I guess that is from libgnome2 too13:40
seb128Laney, right, that uses the gconf key13:40
didrockspitti: so you have a crash fie or compiz just hangs?13:40
seb128Laney, jbicha: so yeah it's a one liner in libgnome's gconf-defaults13:40
Laneycool13:40
pittididrocks: I also see apport after a while; I get nautilus, but nothing else (aside from the apport window)13:41
Laneybut I guess desktop-file-utils wants doing too13:41
pittididrocks: the long hang might just be gnome-session, of course13:41
didrockspitti: what do you see in .xsession-errors?13:42
jbichaseb128: not trying to be difficult but it looks like Ubuntu has modified /usr/share/gconf/defaults and not libgnome directly13:42
seb128Laney, right, though there was still discussions on that, currently totem is the default handler there13:42
seb128jbicha, libgnome's debian directory has a libgnome2-common.gconf-defaults13:43
LaneyI see rb for audio-cdda audio-dvd audio-player13:43
pittididrocks: I don't know, I shut down again; no need to debug it now, just pointing out that we need to fix this by beta-1; three out of three (different) machines failing doesn't sound good, and it failed for Riddell in a3, too13:43
seb128Laney, right, those likely need an update, we are still not decided on what to do for mimetypes though which delayed the update13:43
Laneysure13:43
didrockspitti: yeah, but right now, there is no hang report from what I see, some crashes at starts that smspillaz have a look on AFAIK13:43
* Laney has no idea what an audio DVD is13:44
seb128Laney, though it's not likely to make a difference since there is only one application handling those in the default install13:44
pittididrocks: it probably just took long because gnome-session timed out on finding the WM?13:44
seb128Laney, it's only revelant when you have different options13:44
jbichaseb128 & Laney : thanks for the pointers13:45
seb128jbicha, the defaults directory is what is used for changing defaults, it writes in a gconf directory used before the upstream values13:45
seb128jbicha, it's a way to overwrite values without changing the upstream schemas, so if you don't like the ubuntu customization you just need to edit the defaults or to clear it13:45
didrockspitti: the gnome-session timeout is only on the helper (which is the session tester)13:46
Laneyseb128: what actually does consume this defaults.list? I thought nautilus handled mimetypes through desktop files13:47
seb128Laney, the defaults.list just tells nautilus or gio what to prefer when you have 2 options for a type13:47
didrockspitti: if it fails after 5 seconds, it fallbacks. With the current code, it should fallback to compiz (still trying to launch unity for now)13:47
Laneyah right ok13:47
seb128Laney, i.e several desktop claiming the same type13:47
seb128without that it would pick a random one13:47
pittididrocks: does it actually work on your laptop(s)?13:48
pitti(the desktop live system, I mean)13:48
didrockspitti: I have two netbooks where it works and my laptop. I didn't try the desktop live system though13:48
didrockspitti: still having too much code right now to file in unity to give proper test :/13:48
pittididrocks: yeah, the second, third, etc. startup all work fine; only the first one in the live system13:49
pittididrocks: is the test result cached somewhere?13:49
didrockspitti: there is a nux bug that I tagged priority on the startup performance13:49
didrockspitti: no, but I think that all libraries are cached with ureadahead, isn't it?13:50
pittididrocks: they are, yes13:50
pittibut loading those shouldn't take 20 seconds..13:50
didrocksso I think nux is loading them faster13:50
didrockshum… there is no other cache13:50
pittididrocks: I'm booting usb stick from today's image on the mini 1013:50
pittididrocks: I mean like caching the result in gconf or so13:50
didrockswe don't13:50
pittiok, thanks13:51
didrockspitti: apart from ureadahead, I don't see anything else changing  :/13:52
didrockspitti: what you can test is…13:52
didrockshum, that won't be possible in the first live…13:52
didrocksI mean, startup the "no effect" session13:52
didrocksrunning time /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test13:52
pittididrocks: I could also drop all caches and do that13:52
didrockspitti: yeah, but you need to start the no effect session first :/13:53
didrockstremolux: hey, are you around?13:54
tremoluxdidrocks: hey!  yep13:55
pittididrocks: 1.17s realtime on the mini 1013:55
pittididrocks: user/sys both ~ 0.46s13:55
didrockspitti: hum… with no cache, in the no effect session?13:55
pittididrocks: right13:55
=== mterry_ is now known as mterry
pittirodrigo_: hm, I still get a "gsettings data conversion" crash when booting the live system13:56
didrocksso, it's not for the nux helper tool making that hanging13:56
mterrychrisccoulson, is there any issue with things depending on/using xulrunner-1.9.2 in natty?13:56
pittirodrigo_: I thought this got already fixed twice or so :/13:56
didrockspitti: when it hangs, getting the .xsession-errors can help13:56
pittididrocks: ok, I'll reboot it on my wife's machine later on then13:56
didrockstremolux: so, after discussing again with dbarth_, Kaleo…13:56
chrisccoulsonmterry, the plan was that we'd drop xulrunner-1.9.2 from the archive, although that looks unlikely for natty13:56
didrockspitti: thanks!13:56
chrisccoulsonhow come?13:56
pittididrocks: I just assumed it would hang on the majority of machines out there13:56
didrockspitti: I wish I have time to investigate that… I really wished :/13:57
mterrychrisccoulson, it looks like eclipse only works with 1.9.2 for now13:57
pittididrocks: ok, I'll have a look then13:57
didrockspitti: thanks a lot13:57
chrisccoulsonmterry, yeah, that's only ever going to work with 1.9.2 unfortunately (much like swt-gtk)13:57
chrisccoulsoni did start porting it, but it requires a significant amount of work13:57
didrockstremolux: so, I think we will have to drop some features again13:58
didrockstremolux: it's late past Feature Freeze13:58
didrockstremolux: what do you think about only "add the launcher" when it's installed?13:58
tremoluxdidrocks: do you mean, without the install feedback?13:58
didrockstremolux: right, and that the signal is only sent once the install is done13:59
didrocks(if Software center is opened)13:59
didrocksI know it's a big shortcoming, but if we do more, we can have new crashers which aren't good for the release13:59
tremoluxdidrocks: oh certainly, it's doable14:00
didrockstremolux: I think it's the safest, then for oneiric, we can have a service monitoring that14:00
seb128pitti, can you give specifics on the gsettings crash?14:00
didrockstremolux: still the same dbus call though, but the desktop file pointing to an existing one14:00
seb128pitti, I'm the one who fixed it before14:00
chrisccoulsonmterry - i added another task for bug 728825, as swt-gtk has the same problem14:01
ubot2Launchpad bug 728825 in eclipse "Eclipse cannot start: "java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: no swt-gtk-3557 or swt-gtk"" [Critical,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/72882514:01
chrisccoulson(and it was built against xulrunner-1.9.2)14:01
tremoluxdidrocks: yep, I understand14:01
tremoluxdidrocks: so the icon will just "appear" in the launcher then14:01
didrockstremolux: yeah, once you sent the signal and we assume the desktop file is there then14:02
tremoluxdidrocks: I hope that's enough, usability-wise14:02
didrockstremolux: well, it's already better than what we had for maverick14:02
mterrychrisccoulson, yeah, I'm hitting the same problem with my rebuilt eclipse.  It now has the swt .so files in the eclipse-rsp package (it didn't before I built against 1.9.2), but now maybe it needs to be pointed at the right place?14:02
didrockstremolux: and not as risky as the other solution at this stage14:02
chrisccoulsonmterry - the issue is that libswt-gtk-3555.so is linked against the libraries it needs. if you download a working version and run ldd on libswt-gtk-3555.so, you will notice that it links against a lot of platform libs14:02
chrisccoulsonbut the non-working version doesn't14:02
chrisccoulsonit's being broken by our link options ;)14:03
chrisccoulson**isn't linked against the libraries it needs14:03
chrisccoulsond'oh14:03
chrisccoulsonthat's the issue ;)14:03
tremoluxdidrocks: ok, sounds like a plan  :)14:04
didrockstremolux: excellent, thanks a bunch :)14:05
mterrychrisccoulson, hmm?14:05
tremoluxdidrocks: sure thing!  I'll make the changes on the s-c side today14:05
didrockstremolux: the icon serialized I assume? (even if we don't use it for now, still better to have the real type)14:05
tremoluxdidrocks: no, it's the path to the icon file itself currently, in discussion that's what we thought was needed14:06
didrockstremolux: and the icon size is a gvariant?14:06
didrocksok14:06
didrocksthe icon size though?14:06
tremoluxdidrocks: it's an integer, the largest edge14:06
tremoluxbut that's only important for the animation bit14:07
didrockstremolux: right, I just try to put the right types for the call no failing :)14:07
tremoluxdidrocks: as it's the icon size as displayed on software-center14:07
didrocksso, largest edge14:08
didrocksok, nice :)14:08
tremoluxdidrocks: ah, ok14:08
chrisccoulsonmterry, this is the issue - http://paste.ubuntu.com/580578/14:11
chrisccoulson(the top one is a working copy of the lib, built with --no-as-needed)14:12
chrisccoulsonthe bottom one is the broken version of the lib14:12
mterrychrisccoulson, didn't we turn off as-needed again?14:12
chrisccoulsonmterry, yeah, i think so. have you got the latest gcc version?14:13
mterryprobably not in the pbuilder I used.  let me try again14:13
chrisccoulsonyeah, i'd try that14:13
mterrychrisccoulson, so for swt-gtk, you're thinking a straight rebuild will work.  I guess eclipse will still need the B-D drop to 1.9.2 and a rebuild if this works for me14:14
chrisccoulsonmterry, yeah,that should do it14:14
chrisccoulsonhmmm, how did eclipse even build against xulrunner-2.0?14:14
chrisccoulsonmterry, are you sure that eclipse even needs xulrunner? it doesn't build any of the mozilla swt libs14:19
chrisccoulson(it's not building libswt-mozilla, libswt-xpcom or libswt-xulrunner)14:19
mterrychrisccoulson, in the log, it failed to build the swt libs for the rcp package, but it didn't stop the build.  the files just weren't included14:20
chrisccoulsonmterry, oh, i didn't see that14:21
chrisccoulsonhmmm, it's not a good idea to have a build failure that doesn't really fail is it? it either needs it or it doesn't, and if it does, it probably should have failed the build entirely14:21
mterrychrisccoulson, yar14:23
seb128kenvandine, hey14:52

didrocksI'll just copy the hilights from the week16:41
didrocksAlt + F2 si back \o/ You can have some additional candies like path browsing in it, non-in-path executable and desktop file (icon) matching  Still some work to do to support ~ and "launch in terminal", but the main piece is there16:41
didrocksDash with keyboard navigation. There are some known issues (like enter doesn't really trigger the fist item element), but that will be fixed next week.16:41
didrocksWe got back the place activation, meaning that now you have the "available items" like in maverick to be able to launch software-center on a non installed application16:41
didrocksLots of bug fixes as usual. A huge thanks to all our volonteer community contributor for all the fixes they are commiting. The number is tredemensly growing and it's almost hard for us to keep up on merge requests16:41
didrockswe should have some updates to zeitgeist and some feature freeze exception coming16:42
didrocksall is tracked on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopExperienceTeam/NattyReleaseStatus16:42
didrocksfor the last release, please refer to https://launchpad.net/unity/+milestone/3.6.416:42
didrocksand of course, for next one (list not definitive at all: https://launchpad.net/unity/+milestone/3.6.6)16:42
didrocksany questions/enquiries/murder? ;)16:42
pittineed to go, see you later!16:43
tremoluxbye pitti16:43
seb128pitti, see you16:43
Riddellmurder?!16:43
didrockssee you pitti :)16:43
didrocksRiddell: never know, some people can be really upset by some bugs ;)16:43
seb128didrocks, I saw you negociating to get things dropped from the cycle now, what is left to add feature wise?16:44
seb128didrocks, great work on the run a command btw ;-)16:44
didrocksthanks :-)16:44
didrocksso, big incoming feature16:44
didrocksthere is the "add from software-center" where i reduced a lot the scope16:44
didrockscode is here, just fresh from few minutes :)16:44
didrocksjust need the FFe ack16:44
didrocksfor*16:45
didrocksthen, there is the unity dialog16:45
seb128unity dialog?!16:45
didrocksbut this one will probably go out of scope16:45
seb128what's that?16:45
didrocksit's a compiz plugin for dialogs16:46
didrockschanging their behavior16:46
seb128can we drop thing out of scope now so we don't waste efforts on those?16:46
seb128I though sam said it would not work for natty anyway16:46
didrocksthat's why I tried, but smspillaz still work on the proof of concept16:46
didrocksso, I try to keep them focused :)16:46
didrocksplaces a11y16:46
didrockswork is almost done now that we have dash keyboard navigation16:47
didrocks(and seems reasonable to have)16:47
didrockslatest is multi-touch support in Unity16:47
didrocksthis one is really on the grey zone, but probably won't land16:47
didrocksall the others are referenced on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopExperienceTeam/NattyReleaseStatus (and are dropped)16:48
seb128ok16:48
seb128thanks didrocks16:48
didrocksyw16:48
seb128seems you have things under control ;-)16:48
didrockspretend at least :-)16:48
seb128other questions for didrocks?16:49
seb128seems not16:50
seb128thanks didrocks16:50
seb128tremolux, hey, s-c update?16:50
tremoluxhey seb128, sure16:50
tremoluxso, details on wiki, and highlights are16:50
tremolux* Great news! RAOF has fixed the root cause of the recent SIGSEGV crashes in Software Center  \o/   Thanks Chris, you rock!!16:51
tremolux* Team is now focused on stability/bug triage/fixing, minor visual tweaks and refinements, additional performance improvements, usability16:51
tremolux* Nice improvements and bugfixes in two releases last week, particularly in the ratings and reviews feature16:51
tremoluxthe first bug fix is really nice, a lot of people were hitting that one16:51
tremoluxoh, and didrocks mentioned the scope change for the launcher integration, there is a small change we'll make in s-c to support that16:51
didrocks(thanks for doing the change tremolux btw ;))16:52
tremolux(the "first bug fix", meaning RAOF's fix)16:52
tremoluxdidrocks: sure!  np  :)16:52
seb128thanks tremolux, s-c seems on track16:52
seb128questions for tremolux?16:52
seb128seems not16:54
seb128thanks tremolux16:54
seb128Riddell, hey, kubuntu update?16:54
tremoluxyou bet, thanks16:54
Riddellhi, I don't really have an update, I've been at conf.kde.in for the last week so I'm behind on any Kubuntu activity16:55
Riddelllaunchpad has done the rollout for kubuntu-mobile tasks so that can be built from universe now, I need to check on that16:55
seb128ok16:55
seb128was conf.kde.in nice?16:55
Riddellit was indeed, lots of potential new kubuntu contributors16:56
RiddellQt accessibility might finally be happening on linux, will package that shortly16:56
RiddellI need to move qt 3 to universe16:56
Riddell10 bugs milestoned for beta 1 http://goo.gl/23eui16:56
seb128ok16:57
seb128thanks Riddell16:57
seb128questions for Riddell?16:57
desrtRiddell: any india recommendations? :)16:57
hallynsince the natty desktop cd is broken, i installed from vmbuilder.  then did apt-get install unity gdm.  But when I log in, I get a blank screen.  What else do I need to install?  (i installed wmii and can loginto that just fine)16:58
Riddelldesrt: Bengaluru/Bangalore may not be a tourist capital but it does have lots of geeks16:58
desrtRiddell: i'll be there in a couple of weeks.  hopefully i get to meet some.16:58
seb128hallyn, sorry we are in the middle of a meeting, can we talk about that later on?16:58
* desrt stops interrupting the meeting :)16:58
seb128ok, no question I guess16:59
seb128http://people.canonical.com/~platform/workitems/natty/canonical-desktop-team.html16:59
seb128http://people.canonical.com/~platform/workitems/natty/canonical-desktop-team-ubuntu-11.04-beta-1.html16:59
seb128we seem rather on track for the cycle16:59
hallyn(sorry)17:00
seb128I've no special comment and pitti said he didn't have anything worth mentioning there17:00
kenvandine:)17:00
seb128let's keep focussing on fixing bugs until the end of the cycle and clean the few remaining items ;-)17:00
desrthallyn: it's no problem.  it's a rather natural side effect of holding the meeting in the same channel as normal discussion17:00
seb128other topics?17:00
seb128questions?17:00
desrtgnome3 ppa? :)17:00
seb128desrt, I think rodrigo is still updating it, other will probably put extra work on it once we are frozen17:01
seb128we should have it uptodate in time for GNOME3 I guess17:01
mterryI got a quick mention about seeds17:01
desrtseb128: it's looking pretty substantially decent, actually17:01
dbarthkenvandine: which one? #733833 ?17:01
seb128mterry, seeds?17:01
seb128mterry, go ahead17:02
kenvandinedbarth, yeah, i had asked you to triage it for this weeks milestone17:02
mterryI split the gnome-system-tools package to move time-admin to a separate gnome-time-admin package.  So edubuntu, mythbuntu, and ubuntustudio have seed merges filed.  Until those are applied, they won't have time-admin17:02
mterryJust FYI17:02
seb128mterry, sorry I read that as "seed", like in "not gjs" ;)17:02
kenvandinedbarth, for unity-foundations17:02
dbarthkenvandine: done17:02
dbarthit's on the radar17:02
seb128mterry, ok thanks17:02
kenvandinedbarth, thx!17:02
desrtany chance of getting a gnome3 seed(?) setup?17:03
desrtie: so that a CD gets rolled automatically17:03
desrtis that something that interested 3rd parties could do, or is that heavy-duty canonical-only type work?17:03
seb128desrt, I doubt our team will have time for that before natty but if community people are interested to get that rolling we might be able to help to get it17:03
seb128desrt, 3rd parties can do17:04
desrti guess this is pretty standard derivative-distribution type stuff17:04
seb128right17:04
* desrt will have to learn to flex some launchpad muscle :)17:04
seb128ok, seems we are out of meeting topics, we can discuss GNOME3 and other things out of the meeting17:05
seb128thanks everybody17:05
kenvandinethx17:05
desrtrodrigo_: you showed up just a few moments too late :)17:05
kenvandine:)17:05
desrtseb128: thanks17:05
didrocksthanks :)17:05
Sweetsharkseb128: thx17:05
rodrigo_desrt, oh, late for what?17:07
didrockstremolux: can you answer on the USC part for bug #https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/67040317:07
ubot2Launchpad bug 670403 in unity-2d "[FFe] Recently installed applications should be easy to run" [Critical,Confirmed]17:07
desrtrodrigo_: i was just asking seb about the idea of getting a gnome3 seed hooked up17:07
desrtto build gnomebuntu17:07
didrocks(thanks pitti for the FFe btw)17:07
tremoluxdidrocks: yep, sure17:07
seb128rodrigo_, you just missed the meeting17:07
rodrigo_desrt, a seed?17:08
desrtisn't that how they call the list of stuff to put on a CD image?17:08
rodrigo_seb128, ugh, sorry, was rebooting and didn't see the reminder17:08
rodrigo_desrt, ah, yes17:08
rodrigo_desrt, a metapackage or something like that that pulls all the gnome3 packages?17:08
desrti'm not even sure that that is required17:09
didrockstremolux: thanks!17:09
desrtmay be nice to have ubuntu-gnome-desktop of course17:09
desrtbut i think you should be able to throw a list of things onto the CD without that level of customisation17:09
desrtof course, we'll need custom rhythmbox and banshee packages so that we can change the referal codes ;)17:11
* desrt ducks17:11
rodrigo_desrt, ah, you mean you want to allow creating a CD with the gnome3 stuff?17:12
desrtya17:12
=== MacSlow is now known as MacSlow|break
desrtwould be nice to be able to install a CD and get gnome3 right away17:12
rodrigo_desrt, ah, yes17:12
rodrigo_desrt, not sure how a seed is done though, but yes, it should be possible I think17:13
desrtrodrigo_: i think it's probably not too hard17:13
desrtrodrigo_: when you consider how many people are using launchpad to do derivitive distributions...17:13
rodrigo_desrt, so, what did you end up with in the discussion I missed?17:15
desrtnot much at all17:15
desrtseb just said that he expected that gnome3 ppa to see a lot more love after the distro freezes17:16
desrtand i asked about creating a seed for gnomebuntu17:16
rodrigo_seb128, so what is needed for creating that seed?17:30
seb128?17:31
seb128rodrigo_, no clue, I never worked on a derivate or custom distro17:31
seb128there is documentation on the wiki I think17:31
seb128rodrigo_, btw did you see the gnome-media bug I Cc-ed you on today?17:32
rodrigo_desrt, but the objective of this seed is because you want to provide more gnome3 packages?17:32
rodrigo_seb128, no, looking now17:32
desrtrodrigo_: no.  i'm actually pretty happy with the work that you guys have been doing in the gnome3 ppa17:32
seb128rodrigo_, it's a one liner patch that still apply to g-c-c 2.91, if you can review and get it in git17:32
desrtit's quite good17:32
desrtrodrigo_: just a way to get all of that work onto a CD for installation by default would be nice17:32
rodrigo_desrt, ok17:33
rodrigo_seb128, ok, doing it now17:33
seb128rodrigo_, thanks17:33
desrtrodrigo_: i may look into it a bit myself17:33
desrtrodrigo_: would be neat to see how some of this works17:33
rodrigo_seb128, what was the bug #?17:36
seb128rodrigo_, bug #69603517:36
ubot2Launchpad bug 696035 in gnome-media "gnome-volume-control sliders work incorrectly" [Low,Triaged] https://launchpad.net/bugs/69603517:36
seb128rodrigo_, http://launchpadlibrarian.net/61467816/gnome_volume_control_fix_channel_bars.patch17:37
desrtrodrigo_: it actually seems quite a lot less automatic than i thought17:37
rodrigo_desrt, hmm, maybe you can ask the guadalinex people, they work on changing the seeds afaik17:38
desrtya.  from what i'm reading, they do more than we'd probably need to17:38
desrtthe nice thing is that it appears that we can extensively abuse canonical's infrastructure with their blessing :)17:38
desrtfor the archive purposes, at least17:38
desrtwe might have to spin the images for ourselves, though17:39
desrtand host them ourselves17:39
desrtmaybe on gnome.org or something17:39
rodrigo_desrt, :D17:40
desrteither way, it seems like a bit more work than i originally guessed17:42
desrtbut not too bad17:43
desrtthere are some tools to assist with the process of spinning the images17:43
rodrigo_seb128, the patch is already in gcc master17:47
seb128rodrigo_, ok, I checked with the current tarball17:48
seb128rodrigo_, oh ok, was fixed some days ago17:49
seb128rodrigo_, sorry for the noise ;-)17:49

chrisccoulsonseb128, bug 711453 shouldn't be assigned to us should it? it doesn't look like something we normally touch (and it's in universe)20:53
ubot2Launchpad bug 711453 in evolution-rss "[natty] evolution-rss FTBFS" [High,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/71145320:53
seb128chrisccoulson, no, skaet keeps doing that for some reason20:54
chrisccoulsonheh20:54
skaetchriscoulson, seb128 - okie,  moving it to track in motu, so I don't keep assigning it to desktop.20:55
skaetsorry20:55
seb128skaet, no worry, is there a workflow issue on your side or is that you really want a team taking over those issues but have none to use?20:56
seb128skaet, it's not the first time evolution-rss issue got on our list, pitti and you played ping-pong with some bugs on it during r-t meetings before20:57
seb128skaet, it's desktopish but we don't have ressources to fix universe desktopish issues20:57
skaetseb128,  want to make sure that all high/critical bugs targetted against natty have an owner,  so its getting looked at.20:57
seb128skaet, right, I think we discussed that before on #u-r, having a team assigned doesn't mean it will be worked20:58
skaetyup,  but that way there's someone I can go to, and ask.  :)20:59
seb128skaet, like we could dump desktopish issues on our team but in practice we have no time to work on those and we would just ignore them and block other people who could jump in if those were no assigned20:59
seb128skaet, right, it just give the false impression that someone will handle the issue...21:00
skaethaving  30-40 high/critical bugs with no-one assigned also obscures whether 1) someone's looking at the problem, or 2) its in limbo.   By assigning to a team, I at least get feedback if its going to be in limbo - so it can be discussed.  ;)21:02
seb128skaet, right, it doesn't keep being back to the team I guess it's ok ;-)21:03

RAOFThis Aussie is on.21:56
jasoncwarnerHi everyone22:01
jasoncwarnerhttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam/Meeting/2011-03-1522:01
jasoncwarnerEASTERN MEETING.22:01
TheMusoThis aussie is ready to rock22:02
jasoncwarnerrobert_ancell RAOF TheMuso bryceh all ready?22:02
TheMusoYup.22:03
jasoncwarnerSounds good. Lets start with22:03
jasoncwarner[TOPIC] Xorg22:03
brycehyep22:03
brycehwe have a PPA set up with the bits for the xserver update22:04
brycehI ran through testing of it yesterday on all my test machines, and found it's ok on -intel22:04
brycehbut on -ati we seem to be missing the -ati/-radeon driver.  So just a little bit still needs fixed there.22:05
brycehotherwise I think we should be ready to upload that and do the ABI bump22:05
RAOFBug #259219 is halfway resolved, at the cost of a regression (i386 assembler is disabled).  You should no longer see crashes caused by it, and I'm banging away at the IA32 asm.22:05
ubot2Launchpad bug 259219 in software-center "Broken TLS support in libGL.so AKA: software-center crashed with SIGSEGV in __cxa_allocate_exception()" [High,Fix released] https://launchpad.net/bugs/25921922:05
brycehfor proprietary drivers, -nvidia is in place and seems to be working well; I've been reviewing bug reports as they come in (just a few so far, which seem to be misconfigurations and/or corner cases)22:06
brycehand for -fglrx, <mumble> progress <mumble>22:06
jasoncwarner:)22:06
brycehfor  -intel I'm still banging my head on GPU lockup issues, that seems to be the lion's share of bugs we're seeing22:07
brycehthey're almost all either kernel team issues (vesafb conflicts) or upstream issues, so I'm trying to coordinate fixes and testing with both groups22:07
brycehgetting users to test proposed fixes is proving to be a bit frustrating, but we're at least slowing getting better understanding of them I think22:08
brycehon the toolsmithing front, I've made yet more tweaks to apport hooks22:08
brycehand also started work on some major improvements to my bug-upstream-forwarding tool22:08
brycehwhich I'm hoping will save a lot of time sending bugs upstream in the future.  Still much a work in progress though.22:09
brycehRAOF, anything else I've missed?22:09
RAOFWe don't seem to be getting (m)any bugs about Unity and the open drivers.  I've you've got graphical quirks, now's the time :)22:09
jasoncwarneryes, now is the time...22:10
jasoncwarnerthanks RAOF and bryceh22:10
jasoncwarneranything else?22:10
brycehjasoncwarner, hope you're feeling better, you're scaring me with the <2nd-child-is-hard> talk ;-)22:11
* TheMuso must admit that when he tests unity, which isn't often atm, he generally won't notice visual quirks anyway. :)22:11
brycehfwiw, multi-head seems to work better now with Unity although I still spot some corner cases22:12
brycehand usability is a bit quirky22:12
brycehlike, if you maximize a window on monitor 2, its titlebar merges to the bar on monitor 122:13
brycehso to unmaximize you drag the bar on monitor 122:13
jasoncwarneruh...22:13
RAOFYeah, that's kinda annoying.22:13
RAOFThere's a bug filed for that.22:13
TheMusoI still don't like the title bar in the top panel stuff personally.22:13
RAOF(A design bug)22:13
jasoncwarnergood..thanks :) that isn't fun22:14
TheMusoEven though it doesn't really affect me.22:14
brycehalso, if you happen to configure monitors one above the other rather than side-by-side, then you can't drag a window from monitor 2 to monitor 1 (it's titlebar gets "stuck").  You have to maximize it on one monitor, then unmaximize it on the other22:14
brycehat least the visual corruption stuff seems to be gone22:15
jasoncwarnerbryceh: sounds like there are some issues...22:15
jasoncwarnerbut keep testing...22:15
jasoncwarner:)22:15
brycehwill do22:15
jasoncwarnerok...thanks everyone...22:16
RAOFI quite like the merged titlebar; vertical space is precious!  I'm not sure I like the ‘mouse over to see the actual menus’ behaviour though.22:16
RAOFDoes it now handle dynamic monitor changes reasonably?22:16
jasoncwarnerbryceh: as for baby #2 - yeah...more work...like 150%, but at least you aren't outnumbered!22:16
RAOFI fixed some stuff there, but it was still a bit broken.22:16
brycehRAOF, yeah was broken before, but I've definitely noticed having fewer problems now.22:17
TheMusoRAOF: Yeah I can understand that viewpoint.22:17
brycehjasoncwarner, hoping we can train Dutch to feed baby #2 bottles ;-)22:18
brycehRAOF, agreed that the vertical space is really nice on laptops.  I still think it'd be nice on external monitors / dual head where you have tons of space, for it to utilize that space more "verbosely"22:18
jasoncwarnerbryceh: :) good luck..22:19
jasoncwarnerI'm gonna call the meeting [END MEETING] Continue interesting conversations though22:19
jasoncwarner:)22:19
RAOFbryceh: I was thinking one-titlebar-per-monitor would be nice22:19
brycehRAOF, yeah could be22:20
RAOFI presume that design has some idea for a different shell for touch devices?  Unity's not very touch friendly at the moment (lots of hover & proximity effects)22:20
brycehjasoncwarner, thanks :-)22:20
RAOFNot that I *have* any form of multitouch device, of course :)22:20
robert_ancellRAOF, any idea about that radeon bug I showed you?  Or is that left to the kernel guys?22:21
rickspencer3RAOF, I think Unity *is* touch friendly, you can do anything with touch, I think22:22
RAOFrickspencer3: Except access the launcher or the menubar?22:22
rickspencer3RAOF, well, the launcher is not auto-hidden by default on netbooks22:23
rickspencer3I'm not sure what they are planning for the menu bar22:23
RAOFI guess there's some easy configuration tweaks available for OEMs shipping Unity on touch devices that would make it much better, yeah.22:24
TheMusoSo. It turns out tha tclaws mail uses custom GTK widgets for its mailbox and message listings, so unless I want to dig around and fix that, claws mail is out as an alternative.23:12
* TheMuso is pondering the switch to a different mail client, preferably GUI based.23:12
rickspencer3kenvandine, photobomb is sooo much better using the gwibber api compared to when I was using the sqlite datbase!23:24
rickspencer3thanks a million23:24
TheMuso8/c23:25
rickspencer3TheMuso, geez, that's to obad23:26
TheMusorickspencer3: Yeah, its nice and lghtweight otherwise, and feels responsive enough with large mailboxes.23:26
bcurtiswxi have an issue with nautilus crashing and respawning23:32
bcurtiswxInstalled: 1:2.32.2.1-0ubuntu923:34
kenvandinerickspencer3, woot23:34
bcurtiswxhey kenvandine , upgrade done.. just have nautilus that doesn't want to die23:35
rickspencer3kenvandine, though ... it doesn't seem to be picking up all the images that I get on my Facebook page, I presume this is because some folks have their settings to not share with apps23:35
kenvandineprobably23:35
kenvandinewell23:35
kenvandineif you see them in the news feed you should see them23:36
rickspencer3hmmm23:37
rickspencer3kenvandine, so if I see someone's new wall photo on my facebook page, it should show up in the gwibber images stream?23:38
kenvandineyes23:39
kenvandinewell... actually23:39
bcurtiswxwho would I talk to about http://paste.ubuntu.com/580839/23:39
kenvandineonly if it is listed as a photo23:39
kenvandinerickspencer3, there is a "type" field in the json we get23:39
kenvandineif it says "photo" from facebook23:39
rickspencer3interesting23:39
kenvandineit goes in the images stream23:39
kenvandineso if facebook isn't saying it's a photo23:39
kenvandineoh... is it a photo posted on facebook23:40
kenvandineor a link to a photo?23:40
rickspencer3 kenvandineI can't really tell23:41
rickspencer3I mean, it looks like someone posted a photo to me23:41
kenvandinebut is it part of an album?23:41
kenvandineclick on it23:41
kenvandinedoes it take you to a facebook album?23:41
rickspencer3bcurtiswx, I would suggest pedro_ from the looks of that23:42
rickspencer3kenvandine, yes23:42
kenvandineok... then we should get it23:42
kenvandinequery your db23:42
rickspencer3well, maybe it's an album itself that was posted23:43
kenvandineand get what is in the data field for that record23:43
bcurtiswxrickspencer3, OK thx :)23:43
kenvandinei would like to see what is there23:43
bcurtiswxpedro_, http://paste.ubuntu.com/580839/ whenever you get online23:43
rickspencer3kenvandine, I'm also only seeing photos from facebook23:43
kenvandinei am sure we can improve the stream selection for that stuff23:43
kenvandinetwitter and identi.ca ones i think come in as links23:43
kenvandinewe need to improve that too23:44
kenvandinewell, identi.ca i think should be right23:44
kenvandineit attaches the media23:44
kenvandinebut twitter just gives a link to the image23:44
rickspencer3kenvandine, ok, I think photobomb should just use the api as designed, and let the gwibber api improve over time23:44
kenvandineso harder to decide how to store it23:44
kenvandineyes23:44
kenvandineyou shouldn't have to work around that :)23:44
kenvandinerickspencer3, but please, get me the json stored in the db for that :)23:45
kenvandinei want to figure that out23:45
rickspencer3kenvandine, sure, what do you want me to retrieve exactly?23:45
kenvandinethe contents of the data field23:45
kenvandinefor that record23:45
kenvandinewell23:45
kenvandinefirst make sure you have it somewhere23:45
rickspencer3oooh23:45
kenvandineif you click on Home23:45
kenvandinedo you see it?23:45
rickspencer3well, I haven't confirmed that the message is showing up in gwibber23:45
kenvandineyou should have it, just not listed as a image23:45
rickspencer3let me do that first23:46
kenvandinehehe23:46
kenvandine:)23:46
rickspencer3I'm going from the web page to photobomb, atm23:46
kenvandineah23:46
kenvandineso much trust in the gwibber api23:46
kenvandine:-D23:46
rickspencer3that's why I was wondering if perhaps users have blocked apps frmo seeing the photos23:46
kenvandinei love it23:46
kenvandineif you can see it in the web, you should get it in gwibber23:46
rickspencer3ah geez23:46
rickspencer3gwibbe hasn't refreshed for 21 hours :(23:47
rickspencer3that;s my most recent entry23:47
rickspencer3and is probably at least part of the problem ;)23:47
kenvandinehehe23:51
kenvandinewonder why23:51
rickspencer3kenvandine, it's all screwed up23:55
rickspencer3I refreshed, and now there is a gap between 4 hours ago and 22 hours ago in my gwibber client23:55
rickspencer3but not on my facebook feed23:55
rickspencer3so, net/net, I have no idea what is wrong ;)23:55
kenvandinewell... that isn't surprising23:55
kenvandineso gwibber limits the size of the result23:56
kenvandinewell, facebook, twitter, etc do23:56
rickspencer3yah23:56
kenvandineso it won't get everything if you have had lots of traffic23:56
kenvandinethey just won't give us that big of a result set23:56
rickspencer3basically, so far as I can tell, there are no actual images in my gwibber client, atm23:56
kenvandinewhat version?23:56
rickspencer3so, I think it is working, probably23:56
kenvandineare you current"23:57
rickspencer3Gwibber 2.91.9123:57
kenvandinethat should have been the version where it was fixed23:57
kenvandineselect count(*) from messages where stream = 'images';23:58
kenvandineselect count(*) from messages where service = 'facebook' and stream = 'images';23:59
kenvandinemight be better23:59
* kenvandine needs to run23:59
kenvandinebbl23:59
