FanshaweI'm up a certain creek here. Ubuntu 10.10 delivers the error, "HD0, msdos1 read error" upon boot.17:13
MrChrisDruifThe what?17:15
FanshaweI have absolutely no idea what this means, or what to do with the following 'grub rescue' command prompt.17:15
MrChrisDruifFanshawe: were you able to boot to Ubuntu before?17:15
yofelhm... that sounds like grub can't read the partition table of the first HDD. I have no idea what would cause that though17:16
FanshaweMrChrisDruif: Yes. I should explain what happened. Ubuntu 10.10 is on my netbook. It was connected to an external HDD dock via USB. I switched the dock off and there was an immediate crash. The error appeared when I switched it back on.17:17
MrChrisDruifFanshawe: Did you try booting with the external HDD dock attached / switched on?17:18
FanshaweYeah. I even went into the BIOS to prioritise that drive, but I don't see how that would help. Ubuntu isn't installed there, it's on a native drive.17:18
FanshaweAn SSD.17:19
MrChrisDruifA netbook with a SSD? Good upgrade :)17:19
FanshaweI'm not even sure what this error means.17:20
FanshaweI assume it was something to do with disk space. It was so strange, an instant crash when a removable device was, well, removed.17:20
MrChrisDruifDo you have a dualboot Fanshawe?17:21
FanshaweNo, just Ubuntu 10.10.17:21
MrChrisDruifGTG17:23
MrChrisDruifGood luck Fanshawe17:23
FanshaweThank you.17:23
jhanafrogcan you access the drive from a live cd?17:23
MrChrisDruifFanshawe: Try searching google with your error, you might find some thread which solved your issue :)17:23
FanshaweWill do.17:24
Fanshawejhanafrog: I'll try the USB I installed Ubuntu from.17:24
jhanafrogright, it's a netbook, no live cd, a live usb17:25
jhanafrogi should just call it a live iso from now on17:25
jhanafrogheh17:25
jhanafroggood luck Fanshawe17:25
FanshaweThanks17:25
FanshaweGood idea to run memtest?17:28
MrChrisDruifFanshawe: How's it going? Dinner is postponed since it wasn't warm :P17:33
FanshaweRunning memtest right now17:33
MrChrisDruifAlright...17:35
MrChrisDruifI saw in one thread that reinstalling solved the problem, but that shouldn't be normal (even thou with most real problems I've got, I reinstall :P)17:36
jhanafrogreinstalling solving the problem is quite mysterious17:37
jhanafroghopefully the hdd isn't going bad17:37
FanshaweThat's my biggest worry, jhanafrog17:39
FanshaweSo it boots from the Live CD perfectly. I'm going to try booting from the first disk with the Live CD still present.17:39
FanshaweNo, grub rescue prompt again. How bizarre.17:41
FanshawePerhaps I should just reinstall?17:41
FanshaweTo be honest, though, I don't really appreciate system bricking errors with no explanation. Any ideas on what the problem was?17:41
MrChrisDruifFanshawe: I never had this issue before, and I don't know of a fix to solve it. I'll keep looking thou17:43
jhanafrogFanshawe: what brand hdd?17:45
jhanafrog10.10, right?17:46
jhanafrogi guess the problem is either in grub2, the kernel, not sure what else17:46
MrChrisDruifFanshawe: was the dock attached during installation?17:47
FanshaweASUS-PHISON OB SSD?17:47
Fanshaweand yeah, 10.1017:47
jhanafroghmmm, maybe there is something different with the firmware of that SSD17:47
Fanshawehttp://www.ebuyer.com/product/180460?utm_source=google&utm_medium=products17:48
FanshaweThat's the dock, I was using an IDE drive with it17:48
Fanshawefor storage, mainly, no system files on there as far as I'm aware17:48
jhanafrogignore me, just thinking out loud17:48
jhanafrogi must misunderstand, i thought you were booting off the internal ssd17:49
MrChrisDruifjhanafrog: Fanshawe is booting from the internal ssd17:49
FanshaweYes. Hence the confusion when the crash occured. Made absolutely no sense to me.17:50
MrChrisDruifHowever, Fanshawe had an immediate crash after turning the dock off17:50
FanshaweRight, I'm going to try booting from the live CD and reinstalling the grub17:52
FanshaweNo dice.18:05
FanshaweI looked on my filesystem and the entire partition is 'unknown'.18:05
FanshaweI have no idea what to do here, other than to reinstall.18:07
MrChrisDruif=-O18:09
MrChrisDruifGot to eat now, but you can't apply a filesystem to it without installing?18:09
FanshaweThe ext4 file system creation in partition #1 of SCSI2 (0,0,0) (sda) failed.18:24
FanshaweThat's it, I think. Is this a hardware failure I'm looking at?18:24
momonohi18:26
FanshaweNothing worked yet. Can anybody confirm whether the disk is dead?18:48
kristian-aalborgit is18:49
kristian-aalborg;)18:49
FanshaweReally? My laptop bricked, just like that?18:50
jhanafrogFanshawe: sorry, i had to plant some dill19:00
jhanafrogif you couldn't access the hdd from the livecd, or partition, then reinstalling is all i can think of19:01
jhanafrogwould OS did the asus come with?19:01
jhanafrogcan you compare kernel versions?19:01
FanshaweThe OS was originally an XP machine, but it was completely wiped and loaded with Eeebuntu (or something like that), which I then replaced with Ubuntu.19:02
Fanshawe10.04 then 10.10.19:02
FanshaweMight have to help me with the kernel.19:02
FanshaweAlright, I'm running memtest again.19:13
FanshaweAnd I'm letting it finish.19:13
jhanafrogi think memtest is for testing ram19:14
jhanafrogsorry, i had to fill up my bowl Fanshawe19:14
Fanshaweoh. Then what can I do?19:15
jhanafrogyou can try running fsck from a terminal19:15
jhanafroglet me see if i have the code for it19:15
jhanafrogah, even easier Fanshawe19:16
jhanafrogrun "disk utility" from system > adminstration > disk utility19:17
FanshaweYes19:17
jhanafrogthen click "check filesystem"19:18
Fanshaweokay, I'll boot the livecd again now19:18
jhanafrogok, good luck19:18
FanshaweAll it returned was, "File system NOT clean."19:22
Fanshawejhanafrog: what does that mean?19:23
jhanafrogwow, that was fast.  i guess it found errors.19:24
jhanafrogyou should run it again, it should attempt to repair the filesystem19:24
FanshaweAll that happens is that message appears. There's a spinning icon in the background, but I'm not sure whether it's doing anything.19:25
jhanafrogi dunno, i've never run fsck from the disk utility19:25
jhanafrogyou can try from the command line19:25
jhanafroglet me see if i can find the command19:25
FanshaweIt says the device is busy.19:26
jhanafrogyou can read the man page, man fsck19:26
jhanafrogyou're in a live cd and it said it was busy?  you may have to close the "disk utility" app19:26
FanshaweIt's closed. Same result.19:28
Fanshawerebooting and trying again...19:28
jhanafrogdid you mount the file system?19:28
jhanafrogyou're in a livecd right?19:28
jhanafrogah, i think the livecd mounts it, you'll have to umount it first19:29
jhanafrogthere is an "unmount volume" button in the "disk utility" program19:30
FanshaweWow.19:33
FanshaweOkay, that's really strange.19:33
FanshaweDisk utility now says that my disk is free.19:33
FanshaweNothing on it.19:33
FanshaweI tried to format it earlier but it didn't work.19:33
FanshaweAll I can think, is, the drive has now completely failed?19:34
jhanafrogdid you try running fsck to see what it would say?19:34
FanshaweOutput follows:19:36
Fanshawehttp://pastebin.com/gjw7uQB919:37
Fanshawejhanafrog: still can't install anything on it, no matter what's happened19:41
jhanafrogi don't know, there may be more options that you can use in fsck Fanshawe19:42
jhanafrogi'm trying to brush up on it19:42
FanshaweCool. Thank you.19:42
jhanafrogi've used it before, but i didn't save the command :(19:43
jhanafrogi have this saved:  sudo touch /forcefsck && sudo reboot19:43
jhanafrogbut i don't know if that will work from a livecd19:43
jhanafrogit shouldn't make a difference though :|19:44
jhanafrogoh, yeah, /dev/sda won't work.  there should be /dev/sda119:45
jhanafrogor /dev/sda*, if there aren't, then yeah, you need to repartition and format the drive19:45
jhanafrogso i guess reinstall19:45
FanshaweThere used to be an sda1, not the partition is gone19:47
jhanafrogweird19:47
jhanafrogi dunno what happened.  well, reinstall, and if you can get the kernel from the eeepc linux that was installed19:48
jhanafrogso that if it happens again we can compare19:48
FanshaweMaybe I could try installing the eeebuntu?19:49
jhanafrogyeah, why not.  whatever works that is foss.  of course, i'd rather get you up with UNR if we can.  it may be prettier, and i don't know if eeepc has repositories set up19:50
jhanafrogwhere are you located Fanshawe?19:50
jhanafrogthere may be a LUG or UUG (LoCo) in your area to get synced up with19:51
Fanshawehttp://pastebin.com/jCFPeDdv19:54
Fanshawefsck on sda1 ^19:54
FanshaweLocated? UK.19:55
jhanafrogcheck out #ubuntu-uk Fanshawe19:56
FanshaweWill do, thanks, jhanafrog.19:58
jhanafroghow did you run that one Fanshawe?20:05
jhanafrogwhen i ran a file system check on my "pen drive" from "disk utility" i got "file system is clean"20:07
jhanafrogyou know, considering it's an ssd it is probably better to reinstall to avoid needless writes to the disk (assuming fsck writes, i don't know)20:08
jhanafrogand if there isn't data you're retrieving...just reformat20:08
jhanafrogsee if the problem happens again20:08
jhanafrogah, ignore me, you're getting help in #ubuntu-uk20:08
jhanafrogcool!20:09
FanshaweNo, no, thanks, jhanafrog.20:09
FanshaweI am going to try for a full reformat.20:09
jhanafrogi'm in there too if you want to talk there :)20:09
FanshaweCool, alright.20:10

LukasBbioterror: Cheers, bioterror but I think for that command I need the name of the version I want to get, do I? I am looking for the command that is listing the available versions... But I give it a try21:43
MrChrisDruifA listing of the available versions?21:45

MrChrisDruifLukasB: I didn't mean to offend you :)21:55
LukasBI know!21:55
LukasBIts all good! Just wanted to make a little joke..21:55
MrChrisDruifLukasB: Here's how it works; Ubuntu has software in it's repositories and only does security updates to them during a release. If you want from a certain software updated outside of the releases, you need to add Personal Package Archives or PPA's, like FireFox4. And it's alright, I just thought you were serious, hence the apology :D21:57
LukasBAh thank you! You know, I use ubuntu for two weeks now and started to work on websites for some reason 7 months ago (drupal) and I am so amazed by this open-source movement and all the great support you get from lovely people!!!But I really rely on you guys...22:00
