zrutyIs the wireless switched on?03:08
zrutySometimes there is a switch somewhere03:08
Guest55684Yea the light is on but if I do iwconfig it doesn't have a wlan003:09
Guest55684Any ideas?03:10
zrutymoment...03:11
Guest55684Okay.03:11
zrutyIs it a USB or a PCI thing?03:11
Guest55684PCI it is a hp ze5000 and it is built it03:12
zrutyyou can do sudo lspci in a terminal window03:12
zrutyAnd see if it is in there03:12
Guest55684there is a network controller and a ethernet controller03:13
Guest55684Intersil Corportation Prism 2.5 Wavelan Chipset03:13
Guest55684How do I know which one it is?03:14
zrutyGood question...03:19
zrutyEthernet is wired03:19
zrutySo it must be the other one03:19
Guest55684right03:19
zrutyWhat with ifconfig?03:20
Guest55684Doesn't show any wlan003:21
charlie-tcaiwconfig?03:21
Guest55684I tried installing the driver but I don't know if I have the right one and it is hard to find03:21
Guest55684It doesn't show up there either03:21
zrutyI am starting my xubuntu lapdog...03:21
zrutyYes, I have never heard of intersil03:21
Guest55684I guess I just need to try to find the right driver03:22
Guest55684It is an HP ZE5000 and there is no drivers on the HP website and I can't really find out what wireless card it has...03:22

zrutyok...03:24
zrutysudo lsmod | more03:24
zrutyDo you see any module that looks like it may be the wireless?03:25
Guest55684No not really I am searching for the driver now though...03:25
Guest55684The only driver files I can find are freaking .exe files03:26
zrutyndiswrapper...?03:27
zrutyWhen I google  Intersil Corportation Prism 2.5 Wavelan and Ubuntu I see a few posts for ubuntu forum come up03:28
zrutyndiswrapper is a .. tool... that you can use the Windows driver under linux03:28
zrutyWorks 99% of the time, used it myself a long time ago..03:28
Guest55684I know but the problem is I can't just find the drivers, there is only .exe files03:29
Guest55684I might of found it hold on...03:31
zrutyYes, I too have an old network controller for which no specific linux driver exists. No choice but to use ndiswrapper.03:33
zrutyOR, since yours is also old, buy a newer network controller.03:34
zrutyN is the standard now, people are ridding themselves of (A/B/)G cards.03:34

knomeoh, applet13:14
knomeljsoftnet, you can use xfapplet to use a gnome panel applet if there is one for gnome :)13:14
ljsoftnetis used it, but it goes back to its default setting after reboot13:15
ljsoftnetknome is used it, but it goes back to its default setting after reboot13:15
knomeljsoftnet, when logging out, do you select 'save session' ?13:16
ljsoftnetknome didn't know that13:17
knometry that, and see if the applet is working after reboot/-login :)13:17
ljsoftnetknome ok, rebooting13:18
ljsoftnetknome what does save sessions do?13:24
knomeljsoftnet, umm, save the session :))13:24
ljsoftnetknome it saves the session of xfce's panels?13:25
knomeljsoftnet, should save that too, and any applications running13:25
ljsoftnetknome ok thanks13:26
knomeno problem. did it work?13:26
ljsoftnetknome yes it worked13:27
knomeokay, great13:27
ljsoftnetknome what about system loader, what does "swap" monitor, is it the harddisk?13:28
knomeljsoftnet, yes and no - swap is an area in the hard disk that is used like ram when/if you run out of ram13:29
ljsoftnetknome ah ok13:30
knomeljsoftnet, say, if you have 1GB of ram, the system starts using the swap partition (a bit before) when 1GB ram is used13:30

I was in the window manager settings playing around with window borders, and then I scrolled all the way to the bottom and a black screen flashed with some kind of error text I couldn't see and then I went back to the login screen. It does it every time I log in unless I go to the recovery console20:14

jayantHello Everyone, i am using ubuntu 10.10 that works real slow on my system. I want to switch over to xubuntu. Will installing the xubuntu-desktop package make my system work fine ?23:56
knomejayant, that might bring some help. how much ram do you have?23:57
jayantknome: 256MB RAM23:58
knomeokay. the pc won't be lightning fast with xubuntu either, then, i'm afraid.23:58
knomehowever, good application choices can ease the situation23:58
jayantknome: then what else can i try to make it work fast ?23:58
knomethere is lubuntu, which is even lighter than xubuntu23:59
knomethough i really suggest a reinstall anyway23:59
