[01:14] good evening [11:21] good morning [11:48] howzit [11:49] I've been running ubuntu netbook remix on an old laptop, and i've upgraded to natty which i've been periodically updating after that [11:50] after todays update though, my unity desktop is gone, and i'm seeing the gnome panels again [11:50] unity doesn't seem to be an option in the gdm menu [11:51] i pity the team who needs to release that in a month [11:51] and i've reinstalled ubuntu-netbook-unity-default-settings [11:52] any other ideas? [11:52] b.t.w. i've actually been very happy with the unity UI and before today, haven't had any issues [11:53] never been a gnome fan, but I like unity [11:53] my first contact with unity was installing the 11.04 beta in virtualbox yesterday [11:53] so i know less than you do... [11:54] hehe [11:54] it's a pity because the google results are just full of people bitching about unity, I assume the useful pages are like 10 screens down [11:59] brb, gonna try something [12:02] beh, no luck [12:20] klaasvakie: it's listed as "Ubuntu Desktop Edition" in gdm [12:20] all you need is to have ubunttu-desktop installed [12:21] tumbleweed, thanks let me try [12:22] <|3o|3> tumbleweed: you using unity? [12:23] tumbleweed, I don't have "Ubuntu Desktop Edition", I have "Ubuntu" and "Ubuntu Classic" and then some failsafe stuff [12:23] |3o|3: yeah :/ [12:24] <|3o|3> tumbleweed: :D [12:24] <|3o|3> I'm loving it [12:24] klaasvakie: aah, it's now called "Ubuntu" [12:25] yeah, "Ubuntu" gets me to the gnome panels [12:25] you need supported hardware, though. I don't think unity-2d is ready [12:25] i've been running unity for months now [12:25] it works [12:25] <|3o|3> tumbleweed: well, depending on how you define hardware [12:25] <|3o|3> I mean, my netbook handles it fine :/ [12:25] xfce ftw :D [12:25] it just doesn't want to work after todays update [12:25] klaasvakie: oh, it crashes a lot [12:26] tumbleweed: so wait, does that mean natty won't work without 3d acceleration? [12:26] marcog: you don't need to use unity [12:26] tumbleweed: ok [12:26] tumbleweed, no it doesn't crash, I just can't *get* into unity anymore [12:26] when I log in I get the gnome panels [12:26] I can't get the unity interface back [12:27] <|3o|3> marcog: I don't has real 3d acceleration, and it works. Albeit not always THAT snappily [12:27] tumbleweed: are you going to be the poor sole unity "expert" at the release party? :P [12:27] marcog: :P [12:27] |3o|3: intel graphics works best [12:28] <|3o|3> tumbleweed: I think I may have those yes... not sure. [12:28] mine is running fine on a "radeon mobility" [12:29] klaasvakie: ati is the worst :/ [12:29] wrt linux support [12:29] yeah, but the new libdrm +kms stuff seems to be pretty stable [12:29] yeah, it's got botter [12:29] as in way better than 6 months ago [12:29] better [12:30] the powersaving stuff got merged in 2.6.37 which helped a lot [12:30] and 2.6.38 seems to have added a lot of bugfixes (seeing lot less glitches etc.) [12:30] and kms is nice :) [12:33] ah, google seems to think that it could be a stale saved-session, brb [13:33] http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/04/01/ubuntu1004_beta_review/ [13:33] :-/ [13:36] i pity the devs [13:37] that need to release that [13:37] so very very soon [13:37] i'm glad i've skipped over this problem by switching to xmonad :) [13:38] haha [13:38] perhaps it is time that i should as well [13:39] most the people i know that have tried it out have loved it [13:39] and never gone back [13:39] with a default config? [13:39] maybe in 2 years time unity will be better and worth trying out [13:39] or with a customised one? [13:39] nah, i configure it a lot [13:39] ah [18:30] evening everyone [18:30] Maaz, coffee on [18:30] * Maaz starts grinding coffee [18:31] hey Squirm howzit going [18:31] hey there Kilos [18:31] how you doing?
