[21:46] evening [21:47] hi [22:56] hi moylan [22:57] all well? [22:57] sorry I missed you [22:57] child going to sleep emergency i'm afraid. [22:57] yeah apart from that [22:57] and you [22:57] no worries. kids are a handfull [22:58] waiting eagerly for 11.04 :-) [22:58] ditto [22:58] we tested the beta at global jam last saturday [22:59] wished i could make it but not an option at the mo. [22:59] no problem [22:59] where are you based? [22:59] dublin [23:00] cool [23:00] yourself? [23:00] kildare [23:00] work in west dub [23:00] doesn't everybody (judging by traffic) :-D [23:00] indeed [23:01] moylan, will you make the release party? [23:01] going to try but but will have to see closer to the day. [23:01] if so any preference on date or venue? [23:02] i think it'll be the usual jimmy chungs all you can eat chinese followed by pub. i'll skip the chinese and head to the pub. [23:03] good stuff [23:03] yeah jimmy chungs was the only preference expressed [23:04] it seems popular with the linux crowd. nerds and junk food. who knew? :-) [23:05] indeed again [23:05] so what got you into linux? [23:06] ohhhhhhhhhhh [23:06] long scattered story [23:06] first up [23:06] must confess [23:06] I'm just a simple home user [23:07] nothing wrong with that! [23:07] back in 1999 I was working in the US and bored [23:08] discovered linux and barely got red hat 5.something up and running [23:08] enjoyed it but didn't understand it [23:08] same as my self. 5.2 got it working but wasn't able to do much with it. [23:08] snap! [23:08] then i distro hopped for a few years learning a little new each time. [23:09] I came back home in 2000 and drifted away from linux [23:09] only came back to ubuntu in 2008 [23:10] in the end it was that i colonised my windows systems with open source software. firefox, thunderbird, python, vim, cygwin. [23:11] moylan: what is it you do? I'm a microbiologist by trade. [23:11] i'm a joat (jack of all trades). program a little, tech support software and hardware a lot. general dogsbody. [23:12] glad you explained joat :) [23:12] are you central Dub? [23:12] well i.t. is a weird job. every position has a unique skillset. mine just kept expanding. [23:13] live in killiney at the mo. [23:13] right [23:14] be good to see you at a Ubuntu hour or the Natty release party if you can make it/ [23:14] how did you get into microbiology? [23:15] 1988 (I hear you gasp) [23:15] NUIG or UCG as it was then called [23:15] i'm 40. not shocked. :-) [23:15] Science [23:15] hons degree in Microbiology in 1992 [23:16] Ph.D in Microbiology 1997 (again NUIG) [23:16] 1998 post Doc in the US [23:16] back home in 200o [23:17] moylan 40. great same era [23:17] many jobs in microbiology in ireland in these troubled times? [23:18] not particularly but I'm ok at the mo. [23:19] just that ireland is a fairly small pool tech wise. microbiology seems (to an outsider at least) more suited to a richer larger country. [23:21] ah no [23:21] pharma sector is big here [23:21] but i thought that was only production [23:22] microbiology is critical the many pharma types but particularly biopharma [23:23] and more on topic i'm guessing all the systems at work are windows? [23:23] bullseye [23:24] I even plucked up the courage to suggest OSS options to the IT department in the current climate. [23:25] but I would not have done that in years gone by. [23:25] the it department would be crazy to adopt oss. they would put themselves out of a job. [23:25] nah [23:26] support and implementation are key. [23:26] have you ever watched yes minister? [23:26] wow.... curve ball! [23:26] but yes [23:27] it's like sir humphrey discussing department budgets been the central purpose of the department. a department that saves money will be given less money. so that must NEVER happen. [23:28] ah now I see [23:29] but that is not the case in the current climate [23:29] likewise if there is less need for systems to be rebuilt and fixed then they will lay off the staff not needed. microsoft depends on this. [23:30] indeed but outsourcing IT needs is doing this anyway. [23:30] of course this gives an advantage to a startup that uses oss as they have less overheads to start with. [23:31] get it as cheaply and compliant as possible is the new mantra I feel [23:31] and this is good IMO [23:31] out sourcing i.t. is... a joke. i've dealt with outsourced tech support and 99% of it is more expensive in the long run. [23:32] agreed [23:32] language barriers, time delays, incompetence are par for the course. no matter what is promised. [23:33] agreed again! [23:33] great talking to you moylan [23:34] take care. [23:34] really hope to talk to you in person soon [23:34] must dash [23:34] take care [23:34] an [23:34] good night [23:34] slainte [23:45] how do all, anyone online? [23:46] yup [23:46] how do moylan [23:46] not to bad. waiting for 11.04 with bated breath! :-) [23:47] ha, I know, going be fun alright, gnome 3.0 came out yesterday so it'll be the 1st thing I change [23:48] not so sure about unity but will wait and see before passing judgement. [23:48] don't like it at all, it's all about gnome for me, love the look o it [23:49] theres a testing .iso for it I'm mad to try but internets on a download limit so I can't download load anything big here [23:49] i don't like radical change in these things. the devil you know and all that. but i want to give it a go. [23:50] large iso? isn't that why jobs were invented? :-D [23:50] no job :c spend all day working on a loss generating site and waiting for an app for collage to go through [23:51] ah, sorry! hope that goes ok for you. [23:52] we'll see, it's all try and try again isn't it [23:52] and then 10 minutes when i get my breath back... sorry watching blackadder! [23:52] what you work at? [23:52] ha, love blackadder! [23:52] off work last year due to arthritis. bloody annoying! [23:53] who doesn't love blackadder!? crazy! [23:53] now thats a balls! sorry to hear [23:54] shit happens. only my right hip so luckier than most with this disease. but it makes standing, walking, sitting excrutiating [23:55] ah, the main functions so! [23:56] I just popped on to see if I could get log in details for what ever site the UGJ pics went up on. was busy all week with a C# project but I've failed it so now have the time to put the pics of the Limerick one up [23:57] think they were tweeted. give me a few minutes and i'll have a rummage. [23:57] sweet, thanks
