cole_I just installed a different windowing manager, and when I attempt to login my machine freezes at the login splash screen (which reads "kubuntu"). Is there some way to preempt the loading of the window manager at startup so that I access my machine via a command line?17:47
James147cole_: if you want command line why do you need a window manager? use the vertual terminals (alt+crtl+F1...6 at kdm)17:49
DarthFrogCole. KDM is the display manager, which provides the graphical login.  If you disable it, you will boot to a command line session and can start X from there.17:50
James147^^ or you can force a commandline boot by appending 3 to the end of the boot line (such as with: http://www.brunolinux.com/05-Configuring_Your_System/Grub_boot_runlevel-3.html)17:50
Daskreechcole_: Don't login ?18:04
DarthFrogRight. Instead of logging in, press CTL-ALT-F1  to go to a virtual terminal.  Any F key, from 1 to 6, will do.18:05
cole_I pressed Ctrl-Alt-F1 and I'm now working in a terminal. Where would I edit the settings which tells Kubuntu which window manager to load by default?18:07
DarthFrogYou could just delete the foreign wm you installed.  From the command line, "sudo apt-get remove <package>"18:09

RavenSo, I have the problem where turning on compositing will, over time, cause the xorg process to use 100% of the cpu it's on.  Googling has returned a plethora of different answers.  I'm wondering if there is an actual answer or if it's just something I have to deal with?20:31
cole_What is the difference between kdm and kwin?20:32
Daskreechcole_: one is your display manager it is controlled by X and allows you to login. It's the process that lets X know when it should stop running20:33
cole_which one?20:33
Daskreechcole_: the other is your window manager and allows you to move windows around as a very basic requirement it will also allow you other things if it has the capabilities. It is controlled by you and can be switched out to something else that fits your needs20:34
DaskreechKDE = KDE Display Manager20:34
cole_display manager refers to the physical monitor and window to the logical screen?20:34
Daskreechkwin = KDE Window (manager)20:34
Daskreechcole_: No Display manager is logical screen it has almost no input on what happens once you login.20:35
cole_KDE is based on Qt. How does Kde represent a window, as a QWidget?20:35
DaskreechA window is the same as any other windowed GUI it's what most people refer to as a "program" It's the box that you see on the screen20:36
Daskreech it also includes pop up dialog boxes, save as file pickers and any other item on the screen that "floats" and can be moved20:36
DaskreechRaven: you probably have a Driver bug. Check in #kwin if they haev more info. You may be able to help them track down a solution20:37
RavenDaskreech, think I'll just get laughed at if I'm running an nvidia gpu?20:43
DaskreechRaven: Kwin guys don't laugh20:43
DaskreechI think most of them are runing on Nvidia in any case20:44
RavenHow's the ATI/AMD support these days?20:45
DaskreechRaven: you might have to be a bit more specific20:45
DaskreechSupport for what and at what class card20:46
RavenLet me ask a different question:  what card would you recommend for kde compositing to work flawlessly?20:47
DaskreechI have a 45xx class ATI that works fine except for Blur on opensource drivers20:51
DaskreechI would probably say long term right ATI would be a good bet they seem pretty serious about having the Open source drivers being a very good experience to Linux users20:52
DaskreechJust taking a while to get there20:52
DaskreechIntel has (had?) very good stable drivers but they aren't really that great for video cards though obviously good enough for Desktops and Windows 7 class effects20:53
Daskreechnvidia probably has the best set of drivers now but they are all closed and they regularly drop old cards from support so if you don't have good FOSS support you gotta kludge old drivers to new kernels20:54
RavenHrm.  8400 too old for current support?20:55
DaskreechI don't keep that close a tab on that stuff anymore20:55
DaskreechIf you want to check out issues with compositing in kde and your drivers then you can ask in #kwin20:56
Daskreechif you just want to delve into Graphics in Linux head over to #phoronix20:56

tertl3or my soundcard i should say21:28
gazratertl3: Why isn't it possible to configure it through Phono any more?21:29
tertl3gazra: idk, its a KDE thing I think21:29
tertl3as long as it works, I don't ask why, only how :)21:30
scanhello, I have just built in a new motherboard and had to plug my speakers to some other coloured plug, not the standard speaker output. Can anyone tell me how to re-map the exits in kubuntu?21:34
Daskreech!webcam21:42
ubottuInstructions for using webcams with Ubuntu can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Webcam - Supported cams: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsMultimediaWebCameras21:42
Daskreechscan: udev? though it may be a driver issue21:44
scanDaskreech:  I dunno, it is only about the plugs and such... headphones, stuck in standard output work21:45
Daskreechisn't that where headphones should go?21:46
scanno idea, i only want both at once21:49
gazratertl3: skype is still not getting the webcam mic, ;-(21:50
tertl3gazra: i dont use skype so idk21:51
tertl3if your webcam works then its a skype issue21:52
gazratertl3: ok, I'll keep searching, on gnome skype was working with pulse audio!! And skype is QT!!!21:53
tertl3gazra: there you go then21:53
gazratertl3: Actually to be fair, it was working before the last kde update!21:54
tertl3although I'de think that someone has solved the issue on KDE21:54
tertl3gazra: 10.10 or 10.04?21:54
tertl3or 1121:55
gazra10.10 with kubuntu PPA21:55
tertl3i see21:55
tertl3i am still on 10.0421:55
tertl3maybe it works on 10.04 KDE?21:55
gazra10.04 was working fine21:55
tertl3i did some thinking about using new betas and newer releases21:56
gazraAs I said 10.10 was working, it just stop working with the last update21:56
tertl3and I just could not justify moving away from the LTS21:56
tertl3maybe if I was a serious dev21:56
tertl3but I am just a casual user for the most part21:57
tertl3actually I am using 10.04 with kernel 2.6.38.2 :)21:58
lovesthethianoodhi my iphone is reconized when it plugs in by facebook cant find it via its phot uplpaoder and its not found in /media/ it shows up in gwen view with no photos in its folders. whats up?21:59

lovesthethianoodtertl3: i think im mising your point. the iphone used to work fine now it doesnt. something is amiss with linux. could you elaborate?22:10
lovesthethianoodim sure it would work fine with mac os im just wondering what changed/wrong with kubuntu22:11
tertl3lovesthethianood: sorry, idk22:12
tertl3lovesthethianood: 10.04 or 10.10?22:12

greendevili am trying to add a lexmark printer to my computer that has linux22:16
valoriefrom what I've heard, lexmark is evil, bad, and nasty22:18
valorie:(22:18
greendevili like lexmark22:19
valoriehehe22:19
valoriesome are partial to Darth Vader, too22:19
valorie:-)22:19

BlaXpirit-UAHey, I was wondering if it's possible to enable automatic updates for everything (not only security), without any confirmation?22:21
tertl3BlaXpirit-UA: maybe you could write a script for that22:21
BlaXpirit-UACouldn't find this anywhere and didn't want to ask on forums...22:22
BlaXpirit-UAwhat kind of script?22:22
tertl3a shell script22:22
BlaXpirit-UAyes, i know :D22:22
tertl3sudo apt-get update every day @ 2;00?22:22
tertl3should be possbile22:22
BlaXpirit-UAhmmm, seems OK22:23
BlaXpirit-UAcan I put some notification after anything has been updated?22:23
tertl3sure22:23
BlaXpirit-UAhow? :P22:23
=== PaulW2U is now known as G4MBY
tertl3i'm not sure exactly , but maybe put in in a start-up script so it runs from time you boot up?22:24
BlaXpirit-UAi mean... if nothing needs to be updated, do nothing; else update and show a notification22:24
=== G4MBY is now known as PaulW2U
BlaXpirit-UAcould make a plasmoid, but... i have a bad experience with it22:25
BlaXpirit-UAthey seem to make the environment slow, if written by someone unexperienced...22:25
tertl3yes, plasmoid adds confusion to a newb like me22:26
BlaXpirit-UAwell, I could parse the output of apt-get...22:26
BlaXpirit-UAbut there has to be a better way22:26
tertl3BlaXpirit-UA: yeah, my guess is that someone has done this already22:27
BlaXpirit-UAbut wait -- doesn't it need a password?22:27
tertl3it should22:27
BlaXpirit-UAwill i have to write my password inside the script? :S22:27
Daskreechvalorie: They are the only peopel I can thin k of with open source printer drivers22:27
greendevildoes anyone know how to add a lexmark printer to a computer with linux22:27
tertl3password could be automated i'de think22:27
Daskreech!lexmark22:28
BlaXpirit-UAautomated, yes... but for that   it would have to be written as plain text22:28
Daskreechdamn bot :-p22:28
BlaXpirit-UAhuh22:28
valorieI think what you are looking for, BlaXpirit-UA, is a cron-job22:28
tertl3BlaXpirit-UA: i'm not saying I know how, but just saying that i think its possible22:28
valoriegoogle for cron22:28
Daskreechgreendevil: Did you try cups?22:28
valorieor man cron22:28
BlaXpirit-UA"cron" blah22:28
greendevilno22:28
BlaXpirit-UAscheduling is not a problem22:28
tertl3yes you want cron22:28
BlaXpirit-UAupdating itself  is22:28
tertl3i once used cron to automate irssi startup22:29
BlaXpirit-UAokay22:29
BlaXpirit-UAbut really, it's not a problem22:29
BlaXpirit-UAi asked about updates  :S22:29
DaskreechBlaXpirit-UA: I think you can22:30
Daskreechi would not recommend it22:30
tertl3BlaXpirit-UA: yes, sometimes linux security can be counter productive :\22:30
BlaXpirit-UAbecause... i selected "install all updates" and unchecked "show notifications"22:30
BlaXpirit-UAseems right, but22:31
BlaXpirit-UAthere simply were no updates -_-22:31
BlaXpirit-UA"would not recommend"... I heard such things, but I think I trust the developers, and anyway, I just click OK anytie an update arrives22:32
ooki2day__hello22:32
DaskreechThe developers cannot know the details of your machine22:32
* tertl3 goes back to shining his boots22:32
ooki2day__I want open the file *.run for writing. how can I do this?22:33
DaskreechI trust them to make good judgement based on what they know but they can't know my situation as well as I can22:33
BlaXpirit-UAi like the way you're saying everything but what I need22:33
Daskreech It's also problematic once you start mixing repos22:33
tertl3i mean updates arent that often, why not just type  in password?22:33
BlaXpirit-UAdunno22:33
BlaXpirit-UAit's tiring?22:34
tertl3regardless, cron is probably a good bet22:34
DaskreechBlaXpirit-UA: Try update  kpackagekit but I think that all updates should work22:34
BlaXpirit-UAi think i have the latest version of KDE22:34
tertl3cron is basically for starting a script at boot up22:35
BlaXpirit-UAthat's! not! a! problem!22:35
DaskreechIt's a kpackagekit issue not kde22:35
tertl3so you could say sleep 5000, then update22:35
DaskreechKDE doesn't care about the delivery mechanism22:35
BlaXpirit-UAwell, i'll try again "all updates" and no notifications22:36
tertl3https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AutoWeeklyUpdateHowTo22:36
DaskreechBlaXpirit-UA: you can check in #kubuntu-devel if there are known issues22:36
BlaXpirit-UACron-apt only downloads new packages. If you are a desktop user, you will be notified that there are updates waiting by a down-arrow icon in the notification area22:37
BlaXpirit-UAgreat22:37
DaskreechBlaXpirit-UA: so kill the notifier then?22:38
BlaXpirit-UAlol.22:38
BlaXpirit-UAif i kill it, nothing happens22:38
BlaXpirit-UAi have to accept the whole thing22:38
BlaXpirit-UAand write password probably22:38
DaskreechBlaXpirit-UA: No just get the Command line to do constant silent updates and then kill all GUI stuff22:39
BlaXpirit-UAbut command line stuff needs a password, i think22:39
BlaXpirit-UAthe *sudo* thing22:39
Daskreechno it doesn't22:39
Daskreechnot if you tell it not too22:40
BlaXpirit-UAok then, please tell me the command to install all the updates that doesn't require a password22:40
BlaXpirit-UAor is it something more sopisticated?22:41
DaskreechBlaXpirit-UA: more sophisticated22:42
DaskreechYou can tell sudo to not ask for a password22:43
BlaXpirit-UAthat's even more horrifying22:43
DaskreechI think that youcan also make it do that on a command by command basis22:43
BlaXpirit-UATHAT'S the "not recommended" thing22:43
BlaXpirit-UAo.o22:43
tertl3yeah its in a config file22:43
tertl3i remember doing it on Fedora22:44
DaskreechOr you can just make a user who only has access to apt-get and have them have password less access to that one command22:44
Daskreech they can update in the background for you22:44
tertl3for all that su -c nonsense22:44
Daskreechtertl3: hmm? what about su -c ?22:44
BlaXpirit-UAi really dont know much of this :(22:45
BlaXpirit-UAjust moved to linux recently22:45
tertl3Daskreech: i was just saying that I fixed sudo to not ask for password in Fedora22:45
Daskreechtertl3: sudo isn't su22:45
DaskreechBlaXpirit-UA: ok welcome to Linux :)22:46
tertl3Daskreech: i know22:46
Daskreech BlaXpirit-UA: what are you confused about?22:46
BlaXpirit-UAcurrently, the update system22:46
BlaXpirit-UAit's all so nice, but22:46
tertl3but I made Fedora use sudo without a password instaed of su -c22:46
BlaXpirit-UAi want it to be done automatically22:46
WalzmynBlaXpirit-UA: you useing kpackagekit?22:47
tertl3BlaXpirit-UA: for all of this, you could have typed in a million passwords :)22:47
BlaXpirit-UAyes22:47
DaskreechBlaXpirit-UA: the link that tertl3 gave you should work22:47
Daskreechtertl3: Learning isn't efficent :)22:47
BlaXpirit-UAbut it's weekly, and either not automatically or "for advanced users"22:47
tertl3thats true22:47
Daskreechuse of knowledge is but it requires knowledge first22:47
DaskreechBlaXpirit-UA: When do you want it done?22:48
BlaXpirit-UAmaybe  every hour22:48
Daskreechso make it hourly then22:48
BlaXpirit-UAbut it doesn't remove confirmation! -_-22:48
DaskreechThat's a touch ridiculous unless you are on kubuntu+1 but thats even more dangerous22:48
BlaXpirit-UAOK, the Advanced Alternative seems promising22:51
DaskreechBlaXpirit-UA: Kill the GUI notifier22:51
BlaXpirit-UAI'll try it, when I make sure the thing really can't be updated without notification22:51
BlaXpirit-UAi'll tell you for the third time22:52
BlaXpirit-UAgui nnotifier is the only thing that makes it possible22:52
BlaXpirit-UAit notifies me about updates, and only then I click to update22:52
BlaXpirit-UAit's the way KPackageKit works22:52
BlaXpirit-UA..22:52
DaskreechBlaXpirit-UA: Sure I'd advise you keep the GUI notifier for a week or so until you are pleased with how the automation works22:53
Daskreech the GUI-notifier does nothing but notify22:53
BlaXpirit-UAWell, thank you very much for help.22:53
BlaXpirit-UAI'll try to kill the notifier later22:53
DaskreechBlaXpirit-UA: what you are seeing is about 6 systems all working together22:54
DaskreechTo you it looks seamless and may seem as if the notifer is crucial. It's actually the least needed part of the system22:54
BlaXpirit-UAwell, I have 4 updates, and it doesn't seem to do anything now that I've disabled the notification22:55

quanthello, if I install 11.04 beta and keep updating, will I end up with a system identical to final release once it's released?23:32
Exilantnot neccessarily23:33
quantif some new packages get included etc., right?23:33
Exilantyou *might* end up with one, but debian packages handle config files a bit poorly23:34
quantI see23:34
quantthanks23:34
Exilanti mean i did it a couple of times, and it works23:35
Exilantbut afaik such installations are unsupported23:35
quantok, got you23:35
Exilantand btw, natty is running fine here today23:36
quantI guess it's a lot less "beta" than the Unity variant since it's standard KDE23:37
quantis it KDE 4.6.1 or 4.6.2 in Natty beta?23:38
Exilant4.6.223:38
quantcool, thanks and later...23:38
Walzmyngot an update procedure giving me the option to see the difference between two files - how do I read the difference output?23:39
Exilantand imho natty with 4.6 is a bit more stable than mavrick with 4.6 backports23:39
quantExilant, excellent ;-)23:39
DaskreechWalzmyn: Can You paste bin it23:42
Walzmynemm, not anymore, I went with "keep the old one"23:42
WalzmynDaskreech: there were '+' signs in front of most lines and '-' signs in front of some. I didn't know which was the new and which was the old23:42
ExilantWalzmyn: that might depend on the frontend, but afaik it's the diff format23:43
DaskreechIt is23:44
DaskreechWalzmyn: man diff23:44
Daskreechor take diff and run it against some files to get the hang of it23:44
Exilanti guess the sane way would be to have the proposed changes with + and the old ones with -23:44
Exilantbut i'm not sure23:44
Daskreechiitwill be file that you have file that you are going to replace it with23:45
Daskreechthe file that you currently have will be the base23:46
Walzmyndiff's man page gives differnt signs for old / new than what I was served up by apt23:46
Walzmynit's OK, I opened the existing file on my drive via nano and found something specific I had set in it, so I told apt to keep the old one23:47
DaskreechWalzmyn: :-)23:48
Daskreechstill helps to learn how to read that23:48
