bjsnideri've never seen anything like these sliders03:33
tarshaIve been stuck for like 2 days. need some help.03:34
tarshai was dual booting.  deleted my linux partiton and used usb to install natty by selecting install alongside windows in the gui03:34
syn-ackbjsnider, The odd thing is that I don't have the sliders on every app on the system. Very odd03:34
tarshanow when i boot it asks if i want to boot windows 7 or ubuntu. if i select windows it boots fine.  if i select ubuntu instead of showing me a list of kernels it tells me windows failed to start and to repair windows03:35
bjsniderno, they don't show up everywhere for some reason03:35
tarshaFile: Ubuntu\winboot\wubildr.mbr  status: 0x0000225  Will not load due to the application being missing or corrupt.03:36
dooglusubuntu hangs most times I copy lots of stuff off an SDRAM card03:41
dooglusit's been doing it ever since the 2.6.38 kernel appeared03:42
dooglusif I go back to the 2.6.37 kernel the problem goes away03:42
dooglusI've tried seeing grub to default to 'saved', so it always boots the same old kernel, but it never remembers, and always boots the new broken one03:43

Jerubi'm having trouble with 802.11n networking on my x200s with an intel 5100 wireless  card, after upgrading to 11.04.04:31
Jerubi'm wondering if anyone knows a good place to go to find later or earlier kernels to  test possible fixes for my problem?04:31
frybyere: I installed compiz04:38
frybyeand also the ccsm and tried to do some stuff like wobbly windows and so on - and now unity has gone - even after I uninstall compiz... any tips please..?04:39
frybyeshort version of ? - how to restore unity after shooting it up with compiz???04:45
DrknezzHi guys, iam using Kubuntu 11.04 x64 Beta and i suddenly start to get this message at boot: "The disk drive for / is not ready yet or not present" Any ideas?04:45
Omegafrybye: Compiz should already be installed.04:47
OmegaGo into ccsm and enab;e unity04:47
frybyeOmega: ok maybe it was - but I had then installed the ccsm and tried to install the compiz ikon and stuff.. and when I tried to change stuff like getting wobbly windows the thing went bad...04:48
OmegaWobbly windows probably conflict with unity.04:48
frybyeok I will re-install compiz and ccsm and re-enable unity... thanks.. brb04:48
frybyeto re-activate unitiy in ccsm - which login should I use before doing that .. can I do it here in "classic without effects" and then switch to "ubuntu" <-- the one with unity.. to see if it has worked or...?04:53
frybyeOmega: where do I find the setting for re-activating unity in ccsm??04:55
Omegaunity is a compiz plugin04:57
Omegafrybye: I think it's better if you reinstall, I don't know all that you've done to your system04:58
OmegaYou said you installed compiz, but compiz comes preinstalled.04:58
frybyelets try to fix this install a bit more before giving up...04:59
frybyethe pluginlist is greyed out..?04:59
Jerubas far as i can tell, this bug is the one that i'm battling with at the moment: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/module-init-tools/+bug/63074805:02
ubottuUbuntu bug 630748 in Linux "iwlagn degrades quickly during normal wifi session" [High,Confirmed]05:02

Jeruband it's marked as being fixed in a version that i currently have a later version of installed.05:02
Jeruband the bug has bitten me 3 times in reading through that bug and clicking on links, and twice since i typed the words 'as far as i can tell05:03

fcomtoishi guys05:07
fcomtoisis it normal that I dont have the universal menus anymore with the new nightly build?05:09
Griemakit is normal for the nightly build to be vary unstable, not sure what happened to the global menus in particular with the build you received, could be a dependency issue05:27
needhelp1how do you see all the applications you have installed like before with beta106:08
bazhangdpkg -l06:08
needhelp1do i really have to search for them via the search bar?06:08
needhelp1bazhang, via the gui06:08
Griemaksuperkey (windows key) and a, then click the arrow next to "installed" to see them all06:09
needhelp1weird, theres also no easy way to exit the .. large black search screen easily without clicking on something random, or pressing ESC .. which is confusing06:11
Griemakor tap the superkey again06:12
Griemakor click the ubuntu logo, as well06:12
needhelp1Griemak, that doesnt work for me, clicking the logo06:12
Griemakwhooops, you are correct!06:13
needhelp1that would make sense though06:13
needhelp1also, the network indicator top right hand corner, mine gets stuck often, i cant reopen the menu unless i click on sound then network06:13
needhelp1closing the large black search screen by reclicking the ubuntu logo, would this be a design change request, bug ?06:14
dinfinally, ubuntu natty on my netbook with the unity compiz plugin06:43
dinalso, figured out a workaround for the not enough space on device issue when using the do-release-upgrade tool06:44
dini.e. don't use it. :)06:44
frybyere: when installing natty with the alternative cd - on a system that needs nvidia-current installed.. this did not seem to work ok if I riht after the install go to the terminal and install the n-current ..06:48
frybyeshould I first do a regular start and when it fails then install the nvidia-current.. the system was all shot up the other way...06:49

frybyehmm there really is no dialoge at all on this # or has my connection frozen or something??06:53
recusantseems quiet06:54
frybyeok - thats reassuring...06:55
frybyerecusant: you have any idea about my ? - is it necessary to do a single (even if unsucessful-) regular boot after install - and -then- install the nvidia support?06:56
frybyeeither way i guess i had better try it that way - not having a better idea... ;)06:57
recusantNot sure -- my install bascially hangs when I login. Fans go full speed, netbook gets hot06:57
recusantmouse won't respond, or is choppy... quite bad, actually06:58
frybyeI suspect my dear wife thinks it would be far better for me to just kick my ubuntu habit.. hmmm06:58
recusantha!06:58
frybyethe thing with win7 is that it is a bit like buying an opel car (here in europe-) some years back - they worked and worked and hardly ever broke down and we just sooooo booring... heheh06:59
recusantubuntu is definitely fun, more like a roadster :)06:59
frybyeso at some stage instead of buying the next s/h opel one gets a new lada and can spend the weekends fixing it.. eheheh07:00
frybyeok  - roadster"" is a bit kinder analoge than "lada" - i admit.. heheh07:00
recusantthey wouldn't call it bleeding edge if there wasn't a bit of blood about07:01
frybyeright.. hehehe07:01
frybyerecusant: re: netbook - natty has or at least had a wlan issue.. don't know if your problem could be indirectly connected to that...?07:03
frybyewhere are you by the way - me in berlin germany (am a brit. living there-) this is a bit early for the us - perhaps that is why hardly anyone is around - and you?07:04
recusantso far, I'm getting in via ssh before i login and running htop. When I login, usually I get four runaway rsyslog processes eating both cores... Once though, wpa_supplicant was chewing on all the CPU, so maybe it is the wlan problem.07:05
recusantI'm in Colorado, US07:05
frybyeoh right - and just burning the 2am oil or similar...07:05
recusantbeen trying to get my poor little netbook to boot all night :)07:05
recusantexactly07:06
frybyehere it is real dangerous if one gets too frustrated with expensive stuff.. (we live on the 5th floor!!) heheh07:06
recusantI must admit a bit of frustration, but I did install the beta, so...07:07
recusantworst case I can just lay 10.10 down over the top, but I hate to go back now07:07
frybyein a rougher part of town - way back - i can remember hearing a window being thrown violently open - a guy screaming - "the fu****g thing still not working" and then the oldish tv does a gracefull arc from the 6th floor down to the (luckily - deserted) back yard.. heheh07:08
recusantoh that must have been a pretty crash07:08
frybyeyeah - back then with a wooden case - cathode ray tube and perhaps even a few lamps.. heheh07:08
recusantmuch less satisfaction throwing an LCD monitor07:09
frybyeright - not that one could really use it as a sales argument for a tube device.. hehe07:10
frybyeI suspect i am onto the right method with my problem.. it may well be only on doing at least this one initial normal boot that a number of config files get created.. and after that one can start messing with it vial the command line etc..07:11
recusantI think that's a good plan07:11
frybyeam just a bit concerned that it dosen't wipe the win7 that I also need for work and such...07:11
recusantSometimes I force a reinstall of the package07:12
frybyeof course should not be messing with such a system but there you go - no risk no fun...07:12
recusantcan you get in with safe mode, or just completely no go on the first run?07:12
frybyei can get in with reduced grafics.. I did all this once ok - then shot it up with a stupid compiz setting.. then on re-installing I went straight to recovery/command line with networking and installed nvidia-current - but for some reason that did not work - so this time going to start once without doing that and then.. do it afterwards.. hmmm07:13
recusantI recall doing something similar and fixing it with a force reconfig of X11, but I can't remember the exact thing... was back in 9.10 or 10.0407:14
bullgard4Will banshee 2.0 manage to reach Natty yet?07:17

bullgard4syn-ack: Thank you for your information.07:22
bullgard4frybye: I missed you last night in the c-base at the GNNOME 3 conference.07:22

frybyei had not job for a while and needed to reduce my outgoings.. so c-base and a couple of other expenses went..07:25
frybyeeh - now I have something with "BusyBox..." showed up - whats that all about?07:25
bullgard4frybye: Not all events there are important. But the conference last night was milestone-setting I guess. Of course the progress in desktop design is a snake in general.07:26
bullgard4frybye: They outlined the next steps in GNOME 3 design and the cooperation with the KDE project.07:27

frybyewhat is that...??07:33
frybyeI do not have a command line or anything else...07:33
recusantoh.. crud07:33
frybyeI think I had better use a gparted live disk to re-format the partitions and then go for this again...07:34
recusantCan you boot from a USB stick?07:34
recusantoh, live cd would be fine too07:34
recusantthat by-uuid is a bunch of links to partitions by id (so that the drivers re-ordering the disks doesn't affect it)07:35
frybyerecusant: I dont have the background knowledge to unstand much of that..07:38
frybyeI intend to delete all but the two win7 related partitions and then re-define them...07:40
recusantah. so, previously, if you had a couple hard drives attached to a controller, they might show up as /dev/sda and /dev/sdb. If you added another drive, depending on you cables and controller, it might push what *used* to be /dev/sda to /dev/sdb, and /dev/sdb becomes /dev/sdc (and the new drive is /dev/sda)07:40
recusantso now with UUID (universally unique IDs -- that ca034etcetcetc) the drive is "stamped" by the partitioning tool, and when you boot, it should link a GUID to a /dev/sdX... so the message would indicate that either an ID is missing or incorrect (or outdated)07:41
recusantso you do have an issue of a mismatch between partitions and configuration somewhere.07:42
recusantif you don't have anything to save on the linux side and the option of partitioning again is reasonable, it would probably be the easiest approach07:43
frybyerecusant: how do I set the mount point in gparted??07:48

bobusumisuI get a choice of Skipping or Manural Recovery12:20
penguin42is there any more debug printed in text mode?12:20
bobusumisuIf I skip I get a new error about not being able to load /tmp12:20
bobusumisuI've done a bootscript-test and pasted here: https://gist.github.com/91127612:21
penguin42so the question is, is it really having a problem mounting them or is it falsley giving you an error - what happens if you tell it to skip them all?12:21
bobusumisuif I tell to skip them all I get to the recovery terminal thingy12:21
bobusumisuthere I can't really do anything12:22
penguin42ok, then if you cat /proc/partitions   does it show your hard drive?12:22
bobusumisusince I get "filesystem not writeable"-error12:22
penguin42yeh, just try cat /proc/partitions12:22
penguin42hmm that bootscript-test thing is cute - where did you get that?12:24
bobusumisusomeone linked it to me on the forums12:24
bobusumisuit's on sourceforge12:24
penguin42hmm neat12:24
penguin42ok, so what does /proc/partitions have?12:24
bobusumisusec, I'm on livecd now12:24
bobusumisubut can't find by / partition12:25
penguin42yeh, you'll need to do that cat from the rescue shell you get when it fails to boot12:25
J|MHas anyone experienced the software centre crashing when attempting to submit an application review?12:25
bobusumisucan't I just mount the harddrive from the LiveCD?12:26
bobusumisumounted the partition with /, but the proc folder was empty12:28
penguin42no, we need to see what /proc/partitions says when it's unhappy12:28
bobusumisuok12:28
penguin42 /proc is magic it's not really on the disk12:28
bobusumisuI'll reboot and check then12:29
bobusumisuHere is the content of /proc/partitions: https://gist.github.com/91133112:39
penguin42bobusumisu: Hmm well that's good - you can see that the kernel has recognised your disk12:43
bobusumisubtw, the full error text is "The disk drive for / is not ready yet or present"12:43
BluesKaj'Morning12:45
yofelmoin BluesKaj12:45
* penguin42 isn't sure whatelse to suggest - you could try running blkid /dev/sda6 from that and see if it matches the UUID in your bootscript-test and grub config file - other than that I'm out of ideas12:45
bobusumisuDon't understand how an update could have done this. Isn't Grub2 also used in 10.10?12:46
penguin42oh updates can break anything12:47
penguin42bobusumisu: I think what you're seeing is post grub, somewhere plymouth/udev/mountall12:47
bobusumisuguessed so too, but now really nothing about the boot-process :P tried reinstalling grub2 and that didn't change anything so12:48
Sprechkaesemy bamfdaemon is crashing all the time, and also my screen stops working (unity) and I have to go tty6 and kill compiz and unity to make it work again. is there any help?12:48
bobusumisuI got a tips about maybe the upgrade wasn't 100% completed. Is it possible for me to upgrade the install on the harddrive from the LiveCD (where I am now)?12:55
penguin42bobusumisu: Tricky but possible; if you mount the disk, chroot into it and mount /proc /sys and /dev and copy your /etc/resolv.conf in then you have a chance of doing an apt-get update and apt-get upgrade12:58
bobusumisuas this? chroot /media/diskname mount /proc ?13:00
penguin42if you do chroot /media/diskname you should get a shell in the environment on the disk13:01
bobusumisuI get a Exec format error then13:02
penguin42hmm13:02
bobusumisuor "failed to run command /bin/bash"13:02
yofelthat means you are chrooting from a 32bit disk to a 64bit system13:02
penguin42is it a 32bit rescue cd ?13:02
bobusumisuI think so13:02
bobusumisu:/13:02
penguin42right, bbs going to get breakfast13:03
vakis there anything new about lacking system monitor widget/applet in Unity? maybe some neat solutions?13:04
Greenthy Hi, I'm new to ubuntu/linux and just installed 11.04, however it doesn't look like how the live demo looked (it doesn't have the side bar but a bottem bar) how can i change it ?13:12
GreenthyK so now it says i don't have the hardware to run unity13:21
Greenthywhich i doubt as it's a new dell xps 15 :)13:21
DaekdroomGreenthy, you're probably lacking proper videocard drivers.13:29
arandGreenthy: Look up the hardware drivers installer in the admin menu13:32
Greenthyk ty i'll try that13:32
Saammany idea if this is firefox or ubuntu bug ---> https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/75106713:33
ubottuUbuntu bug 751067 in fglrx-installer (Ubuntu) "Colors are mangled in Natty" [Undecided,Confirmed]13:33
Greenthyit's showing nvidia accelerated graphics driver : activated and currently in use so i guess that's fine ?13:33
arandGreenthy: That should be yes.13:35
Greenthymight have something to do with intel HD graphics - nvidia & optimus then ?13:35
arandi don't know I'm afraid, searching for your card type and ubuntu (+ natty/launchpad) might show some hints..13:37
Greenthyafter doing time /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test i get : XLib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".13:37
Greenthyhehe jumping into bugs when you're new to linux isn't fun :)13:38
Greenthyi'll google some more, thanks13:38
mns`Greenthy: well, if you are new, you shoud try ubuntu 10.1013:39
Greenthyye i guess that'd be safer13:39
mns`should try13:40
mns`Greenthy: =)13:40
Greenthybut u know, always wanting the newest13:40
Greenthy... :)13:40
bullgard4 /var/log.boot.log reports: "Starting mDNS/DNS-SD daemon" but System Monitor does not show such a daemon. How come?13:43
GreenthyFound the fix for the unity not working with optimus : uninstalling the nvidia driver (i guess not optimal but its one way) :)13:50
PsychoAndroidi cant wait so long for ubuntu 11.04 is the beta already stable enough ??13:51
BluesKajPsychoAndroid, I'd recommend installing 10.10 first then upgrading when the 11.04 official release is out ...there are still some probs with X window manager and kernel source drivers for graphics13:54
BluesKajPsychoAndroid, , but if you're adventurous and patient then 11.04 is an interesting experience :)13:56

penguin42hmm I see kpackagekit is still broken14:00
ceed^Anyone noticed that screen is mostly black when screen is activated after inactivity for more than an hour. I have to "wake" it up from blackness by bringing applications to the foreground until the screen is fully restored. Never seen that before. I'm on natty fully upgraded.14:04
BluesKajceed^, that's a default setting , you change it in power settings14:05
=== cryptk is now known as cryptk|offline
BluesKajpenguin42, I've never trusted kpackagekit , after several breakages back when it was first included as default , began using synaptic more and more , now muon seems to fit the bill nicely as far as package managers go.14:08
ceed^BluesKaj, There's notghing wrong with the screen timeout. It's when I hit the moust or keyboard after the screen has been off for a while. It continues to be partly black and apps are suggish to "wake up" again14:08
ceed^*mouse14:09
penguin42BluesKaj: It seems to have a problem with forgetting to read the output of dpkg and so dpkg blocks14:19
BluesKajpenguin42, ok ...anyway i use the command line as much as possible and the package manager as a reference14:24
penguin42BluesKaj: I tend to use the command line for installing specific stuff, but just hittting the icon on the panel for 'oh just do whatever updates have come in'14:25
penguin42hmm and I'm not getting any update notifications on this <---- unity machine14:27
BluesKajUnity is kinda cool...tried it for a bit when I thyought I'd try gnome again , but my preference is still KDE ..guess that mswindows "look" is still buened into my synapses :)14:33
BluesKajerr burned14:34
ceed^Fonts are totally messed up in Google Earth when installed on natty. Wonder how to fix that?14:34
graingertheya, is there any particular reason that ubuntu classic runs the unity interface as well?14:35
BluesKajgoogle doesn't integrate their apps wirh desktops settings very well, especially fonts , ceed^14:35
graingertor do I have to disable the unity plugin in compiz?14:35
BluesKajceed^, you should try to read the fonts on google earth on a large monitor like a 42" plasma that I'm using atm14:37
BluesKajceed^, they're unreadable and unconfigurable ..and chromium and chrome browsers are the same for the bookmarks bar and tabs ...web content is configurable tho,14:39
zniavre42   :o)14:40
ceed^BluesKaj, The fonts are totally unreadable here on this laptop. They are smeared out and broken up. I have a similar laptop with LMDE on it where Google Earth looks great. Same computer, same screen size.14:40
ceed^Chrome and Chromium works fine here btw.14:40
ceed^My main problem with natty now is that the screen needs time to fully wake up after it has been turned off for inactivity. That's really weird.14:41
ceed^Well, there's the issue that Wine apps doesn't show up in Unity...14:42
penguin42ceed^: Is it actually time or is it the apps don't redraw at all until you force them to?14:43
BluesKajzniavre, yeah , this out tv as well..I have a media server pc to the tv via hdmi and the audio connected thru our home theater system audio receiver14:43
BluesKajour14:44
ceed^penguin42, i'm not much of a techie. But when I hit the mouse I only see a menu or two on the screen, the rest is black. If I Alt-Tab and bring an app to the foreground it comes up fine, but there's still black around it. The screen isn't fully back until I have pulled an app all over it.14:45
BluesKajzniavre, so when wife wants to watch tv , I have use the other natty pc in my den ..which isn't so bad :)14:45
ceed^It's like the app windows wipes the blackness away14:46
zniavre:o)14:46

=== gorbachav is now known as thiebaude

BluesKaj!launchpad | ceed^14:51
ubottuceed^: Launchpad is a collection of development services for Open Source projects. It's Ubuntu's bug tracker, and much more; see https://launchpad.net/14:51
penguin42ceed^: Right, so what you're describing there isn't time - as I said it's that when it comes out of blank everything needs to be redrawn and isn't14:51
zniavre#75554014:52
ceed^BluesKaj, looked at launchpad. can't figure out how to report for natty specifically. I will spend some more time there. Thanks :)14:52
arandceed^: Though if you have the possibility to, use "ubuntu-bug packagename" from the terminal14:52
ceed^penguin42, exactly. If I do not do anything it stays mostly black.14:53
ceed^arand, I have no idea which package this bug is connected to. I know that's a bad start for a bug report, but that's how it is.14:54
ceed^penguin42, which package(s) is most likely to cause the redraw problem after screen return you think?14:55
arandceed^: If it's something in the interface, menus, sidepanel or so, use "unity".14:56
ceed^arand, thanks, ok14:56
penguin42either unity or your graphics driver14:56
ceed^which is nvidia14:56
arandJust make as good a guess as possible, it can always be changed alter on14:57
ceed^I will try log into to good 'ol gnome and check if I have the problem there before I blame unity14:57
ceed^It only happens if the screen is off for more than an hour, so the gnome check will have to wait until I do not need the puter :)14:58
thiebaudei use gnome with nvidia :)14:58
ceed^thiebaude, I have this problem with the screen after it has been off for a while. It stays mostly black and is sluggish until I have drawn a program window all over or maximized a program. I do not know if it's a unity or nvidia problem.15:00
thiebaudewow, thats weird15:01
thiebaudeceed^,15:01
ceed^yes15:01
ceed^never seen anything like it before15:01
penguin42thiebaude: I think something is just forgetting to do a refresh15:01
thiebaudethey fixed my bug yesterday :)15:01
ceed^yep, but it's also very slow15:01
thiebaudeyou try classic gnome with no effects?15:02
ceed^thiebaude, I will try that, but since the problem requires one hour or more of inactivity on my part the weekend is not the right time for that kind of troubleshooting :)15:02
thiebaudei understand that15:03
ceed^most likely I will lok into classic desktop tonight and then see if the problem is there in the morning.15:03

lizard1hi all again, anyone can say me why i do not have sound after upgrade?15:39
gordonjcplizard1: because Ubuntu insists on using Pulseaudio, which is broken15:40
penguin42lizard1: Go into sound settings - what do you see in the hardware tab?15:40
lizard1empty devices tab15:41
gordonjcpone day I will find out who it was that decided that pulseaudio should be the default, to the exclusion of everything else15:42
penguin42lizard1: OK, so  what does /proc/asound/cards have to say?15:43
Omegagordonjcp: Can you take your rants somewhere else?15:43
gordonjcpand, representing the Linux Audio community as a whole, I will kick them up the backside so hard their teeth go on fire15:43
thiebaudebeen using ubuntu for over 5yrs and never had a sound problem, lol :)15:43
lizard1penguin42: not file or directory15:43
penguin42lizard1: Really? Is there any /proc/asound ?15:44
lizard1/proc/asound also15:44
penguin42lizard1: How do you mean also - does /proc/asound exist?15:44
lizard1/proc/asound also not exists15:45
ceed^The only sound problem I've ever had has been been Skype before pulseaudio. other than that smooth loud ride for years.15:45

penguin42lizard1: http://paste.ubuntu.com/ paste stuff into their and it just gives us a URL15:47
penguin42gordonjcp: Please shut up, this guys problem is nothing to do with PA15:48
gordonjcpthiebaude: it just takes over the sound card and prevents everything else from working15:48
thiebaudeahh ok15:48

penguin42gordonjcp: If you have a question about how to do something ask it, but don't get in the way of helping others15:56
penguin42lizard1: ok, try /sbin/alsa force-reload15:57
lizard1penguin42: http://paste.ubuntu.com/591756/15:58

lizard1penguin42: http://paste.ubuntu.com/591758/15:59
gordonjcpfrybye: you should be able to just install pure-ftpd on its own15:59
gordonjcpfrybye: be sure you want to go down the ftp route though - it's old and was never very secure or reliable to begin with16:00
penguin42lizard1: OK, take out oss_usb and osscore16:00
frybyethanks - and that is the same if I also use the pureadmin gui??16:00
lizard1penguin42: remove it?16:00
penguin42lizard1: so rmmod oss_usb; rmmod osscore; modprobe snd_hda_intel16:00
gordonjcpfrybye: most FTP clients will cope with sftp which only wants openssh16:01
frybyeI basically want to use it to send in as simple a manner as possible a single big file to a not very techy friend with win7... so for that - set up and run and then shut down.. should be ok I guess...16:01
gordonjcpfrybye: well, if they're *that* un-techy, why not use a web server?16:01
lizard1penguin42: Year!! thank you very mach16:02
frybyeto send a file?16:02
gordonjcpfrybye: yeah16:02
ceed^How can a process use 130% CPU?16:02
penguin42lizard1: So I'm a bit confused about how that's got that way16:02

gordonjcpceed^: miscalculated values?16:02
frybyegordonjcp: thanks for the info anyhows...16:02
ceed^gordonjcp, two cores. Do you think that's why?16:02

thiebaudeon the top of htop it shows both16:08
gordonjcpceed^: it might be16:08
gordonjcpceed^: 70% on each core ;-)16:08

thiebauderight now my total is over 100% but you have to divide that by 2,lol16:09
thiebaudefor 2 cores that i have16:09
ceed^now htop says 120%....16:09
ceed^thiebaude, how can you see it split per core?16:10
ceed^in htop that is16:10
thiebaudeon the very top it shows 1 and 216:10
thiebaudeand shows a percentage for both16:11
ceed^oh so it's the total you can see, not on a per process basis?16:11
thiebaudeno16:11
thiebaudei can see for 1 and 216:11
ceed^ok, so it says 80/80 right now.16:11
ceed^means I have some left even when playing flash :)16:11

frybyehi - have installed pure-ftpd and pureadmin - seems to have gone ok but (excuse my -partial- ignorance-) but what is the ip# or address I have to give a user to access this ftp server of mine..?16:28
daicazzono one knows something about my error uh? i repost the log http://pastebin.com/dwLYSW7016:29
frybyeI know my ip address on the net but if they point thier ftp client at this it wil get them automatically to the front door of my ftp server or..?16:29
enlifrybye: yes, that should do it if you are not behind router or firewall. The default settings of port should work.16:31
daicazzoso, thanks guys, this channel is very useful16:31
daicazzofuck you all16:32
dubliskIf I upgrade to 11.04 beta, can I easily upgrade to non-beta afterwards?16:34
charlie-tcadublisk: if you upgrade to 11.04 and maintain the updates, you do need to upgrade again to be at the final release16:35
dubliskbut I can just do it using apt right?16:35

eamonno the til ubuntu 12 then?16:36
eamonno 3 til ubuntu 12 then?16:36
frybyeenli: I tried to log into the test user account myself with the firefox and it said home directory not available - aborting.. eh - i see in /home/ftpusers there is a dir for the other user I created but not for the test user and at least with the file navigator it wont let me creat a new dir in there?16:37
blarneamon: i don't think they have decided16:37
eamonok. hopefully they will16:37
blarni bet it depends on how debian handles it16:38
charlie-tcadublisk: yes16:38
enlifrybye: I think you are confusing ftp users with your usual username that you use for using your system. If you follow some tutorial about the ftp server you are installing, you will be able to configure it easily.16:38
frybyeenli no i have fixed it now with pureadmin i think - hang on..16:39
frybyeenli: I have followed the tutorial as far as I know - and there is a ftp home directory for the other user I set up - but I am trying to put something in there for him to collect and it is denying my access...16:45
frybyee e denying me access...16:45
frybyeenli: admittedly the tutorial assumes loads and loads of general background knowledge that I dont have...16:46
enlifrybye: aha, in that case you need to add yourself to ftpusers or some group so you will be able to add files there.. I don't know the exact which groupname but thats the reason you cant add files there.16:46
frybyethe group is ftpusers - how do I add myself to it...? (Like I say - missing general linux knowledge is the prob.)16:47
frybyein my case that and also a poor memory (war disab.)16:47
frybyeenli: ok google gave me the answer apparently "useradd -G {group-name} username "16:49
enlifrybye: The gui way, system -> administration -> users and groups -> manage groups -> ftpusers -> make sure your username that you are logged in with currently is ticked.16:50
enliSure, command line is better ;)16:50
enliYou will have to re-login I guess and yes you should seek support in #ubuntu, this channel is for 11.04 beta support.16:50

genecI've encountered an error in grub during install with Ubuntu 11.04-beta1 using btrfs; trying to figure out what bug to report it on (or a new one);  I've tried #ubuntu-testing and was guided here from #ubuntu17:22
penguin42genec: What's the error17:22
arandIdleOne: Hmm, I gues it requires compiz?17:23
IdleOnearand: thing is that it works but at random intervals it stops working17:24
genecwhen attempting to install grub2 to the volume with btrfs fails (sda1); selecting the volume's parent (sda) results in the grub rescue prompt.  selecting sda at first results in a successful install17:24

ubottuLaunchpad bug 712029 in grub2 (Ubuntu Natty) "ubiquity btrfs install fails to boot (grub rescue> prompt)" [High,Fix released] https://launchpad.net/bugs/71202917:27
penguin42genec: You seem to be describing something more speicific17:30
* penguin42 doesn't know btrfs though17:30
genechonestly, this is only the second time I've played with btrfs17:32
arandgenec: Aren' you always supposed to have a non-btrfs /boot still17:32
deskeyny one know how to disable desktop effects in 11.04 beta version?17:32
penguin42genec: You seem to be saying you have a specific combination that fails and another that specificially works, that seems worthy of documenting in a bug17:33
genecarand: it works as a single / volume with /boot in its file system and grub in the volume's parent.17:33
genecarand: the partitioner also didn't warn of anything when selecting the volume itself.17:33
=== cryptk|offline is now known as cryptk
benzaldehydedeskey: before you sign into gnome look at the bottom there will be a basic version to choose from and once you are in gnome you can turn off startup applications  and things17:35
arandgenec: Hmm, I'm not sure if btrfs is supposed to work without a separate /boot yet, if not the installer definitely should warn about that... What do you mean by "grub in the volume's parent" by the way?17:35
cryptkok, I am not on 11.04, running gnome3... so far I like...17:35
* cryptk is just running all kinds of new/experimental stuff now17:36
genecarand: it does;  the question is rather ubiquity/grub2.17:36
genecarand: sda1 being the volume; sda being its parent.17:36
arandAh, right you meant the MBR.17:36
genecarand: and the "hidden sectors", yes.17:37
genecpenguin42: what I'm trying to figure out is if someone has already reported similar behavior or a bug that it should be associated with.17:37
deskeybenzaldehyde: there are no option i can see in the startup application to switch off the desktop visual effects17:38
penguin42genec: Well if you've done a fair job of having a look for it report it; it's better reported and then merged than not reported17:39
GatunoRoxhello17:39
GatunoRoxDaekdroom: Você é brasileiro?17:40
genecand hopefully before next milestone (at least for release notes) and full release (to at least warn/block in ubiquity).17:40
arandgenec: Googling around briefly I see no indication that the non-btrfs /boot requrement is gone, an appropriate warning would be nice though...17:41
DaekdroomGatunoRox, yes, but this is an english channel.17:42
GatunoRoxDaekdroom: sorry17:43
benzaldehydedeskey: if you ctrl+alt+f1 then sudo service gdm stop then sudo service gdm start you will notice after you click your user at the bottom a rectangular shapped box with a drop down arrow, click that and choose basic gnome or no effects, i forget what it is called but it is an option there and will default to that option once you choose it17:43
genecarand: it may be Ubuntu-specific but I know there's at least one BIOS (versus EFI) bootloader that shouldn't have issues.  I think it's a matter of the maturity of grub2 support of btrfs17:43
deskeythanks17:44
genec(or the controls for grub2)17:44
GatunoRoxCan someone help me find a way that the grub installed on my USB HDD will handle things when I exchange PC's and the drive mapping changes?17:44
arandYes grub2<->btrfs is the main issue, and has always been afaik17:44
arandThere is progress in that area, but I've not heard that any of that has landed properly in natty17:45
genecthe "good" news is that if you leave the default of the parent device (I don't want to say root for / confusion), it works.17:47
arandSo mbr on sda and a btrfs on sda1 (and no separate /boot) does work?17:48
arandBut not if you try to install grub to a partition bootrecord?17:49
ghostcubeeut17:51
ghostcubeups17:51
arandgenec: ^ ?17:51
genecarand: exactly.  selecting sda1 fails; attempting to select sda doesn't appear to fail but doesn't work; sda unchanged and sda1 boot block is zero (64kiB long)17:53
arandgenec: Um, so if sda doesn't work, what does?17:54
genecarand: if and only if sda was selected first in the partitioning tool17:55
arandI'm assuming the usage of the mebedding area are crucial for managing to read the btrfs...17:55
genecarand: if you select sda1 in partitioning tool, install, grub install fails; selecting sda at this time also fails17:55
arandHmm, right, well that seems definitely like a bug then, so even if you select sda1 and then immidiately select sda again before installing it fails to?17:57
arandgenec: I asked in #ubuntu-installer and it is supposed to work, there is an outstanding bug in grub though, however this sounds more like an installer bug...17:59

ryanpriorYou read the gnome3 documentation and build it yourself, as far as I'm concerned.20:48
ryanpriorThe ppa has been having breakage for some people.20:48
ryanpriorAnd the gnome3 people aren't interested in supporting random ppas, for obvious reasons.20:48
thiebaudei'll stick to gnome classic no effects :)20:48
Amaranthboo20:48
Amaranthunity ftw20:49
ryanpriorI think unity will be pretty great... in awhile.20:50
ryanpriorI decided to take the plunge yesterday and start using unity full-time. It's not horrible.20:50
thiebaudeimho, i bet in the next ubuntu unity wont be default20:50
Tigerplug292hey there - i just upgraded and I lost my compiz effects - I'm using an nvidia card20:50
AmaranthI guess I must just know what parts to not poke, it never crashes for me :)20:50
Amaranththiebaude: I highly doubt it20:51
ryanpriorthiebaude: I'd say contrariwise, it's more likely that natty will ship with default gnome, and that's unlikely as it is.20:51
Amaranthnatty will ship unity20:51
ryanpriorthiebaude: In 6 months unity will be better quality, I'd bet on that.20:51
AmaranthIf the TB tries to say otherwise I bet they get sabdfl overriding it20:51
ryanpriornatty pretty much has to ship unity since that has been the plan for so long20:51
AmaranthBut I don't even think the TB will say otherwise20:51
ryanpriorbut I'm not convinced that Unity is totally ready for launch day20:51
thiebaudereally,lol20:52
AmaranthAt this point it's down to some crashes to get fixed20:52
AmaranthThere are some interaction oddities but overall it's a better experience than gnome classic20:52
ryanpriorIt's crashed on me twice so far, but I expect that those will get fixed.20:52
ryanpriorWhat I'm more worried about are graphical glitches and performance issues.20:53
AmaranthDid you report the crashes?20:53
AmaranthShouldn't be many more of those than any other release, we've been using compiz for years20:53
ryanpriorNo, I'm not sure yet whether they are Unity's fault.20:53
ryanpriorMy graphics card has been on the fritz.20:53
ryanpriorSo I'm not reporting anything until I've had a little more experience.20:53
Amaranthunity uses two things standard compiz doesn't: FBOs and shaders20:54
AmaranthAnd it can fall back from shaders to fragment programs which is what compiz uses now20:54
ryanpriorHere's one consistent thing I've seen : if I change the font hinting to "full" it causes a glitch in the dock mouse-over text.20:54
AmaranthSo really the only new part that could cause bugs is FBOs but if those are buggy the whole driver memory model is likely buggy so you've got bigger problems :)20:54
penguin42what's an FBO?20:54
ryanpriorframe buffer object20:54
ryanpriorarcane graphics magic thingy20:55
AmaranthIt lets you draw offscreen20:55
AmaranthActually the compiz blur plugin uses FBOs too20:55
penguin42oh, I hadn't realised unity did anything different from compiz in the way it actually dealt with the windows20:55
Amaranthit doesn't, unity draws its interface in to a FBO20:55
AmaranthJust so it doesn't mess with compiz state and vice versa20:56
AmaranthIdeally one day compiz itself will draw each window into a FBO20:56
AmaranthBut other than some weird corner cases and possible bugs in unity itself if your computer has been able to use compiz with the blur plugin you shouldn't have any driver issues causing unity problems20:57
ryanpriorI didn't use compiz before. I messed with it but it dropped the FPS on my 3d games.20:57
AmaranthMe, I have sandy bridge graphics, so I get lots of weird issues. Nothing reproducible though so I can't report anything.20:58
Amaranthryanprior: Ah, you must use nvidia then20:58
ryanpriorNope, I'm on fglrx.20:58
AmaranthOdd, benchmarks have shown little to no drop in FPS with anything except nvidia20:58
ryanpriorMaybe that's true, but if I used alt+tab to get to an IM or my music player or something and then alt-tabbed back into my game, the FPS took a huge hit.20:58
ryanpriorWhen I disabled compiz I didn't notice any degradation from alt-tab usage.20:59
Amaranthah, driver doesn't like you switching contexts20:59
AmaranthOpenGL contexts, that is20:59
AmaranthThat sucks20:59

Belboz9999I tried resetting some grub settings, the prefix and the root, and as-per instructions I tried to finish with insmod linux, and it spits out: error: symbol not found: `grub_mm_base'  .21:05
Belboz9999ryanprior: yeah, I know that drill21:05
ryanpriorBelboz9999: okay, you're probably looking for a sharper tool than I use then. ;-)21:06
ryanpriorI just nuke grub and re-build it until it works.21:06
Belboz9999I shouldn't have to resort to an installation disc though, I don't even have one for Natty, I could probably use an older 10.04 or 10.10 though as it's all Grub 2, and if I'm chrooted I'm using the installed OS anyway21:06
ryanpriorright, any basic resuce cd should work21:06
ryanpriors/resuce/rescue/21:07
Belboz9999mostly I'm PO'ed because I don't get a whole lot of free time when I'm watching my daughter all day21:08
Belboz9999now she's finally down for a nap, and what do I get to do with my free time?  fix grub :(21:09

ryanpriorIs there a way to get Firefox to use the new slick overlay scrollbars?21:14
AmaranthNope21:14
AmaranthWill need someone to modify firefox specifically21:14
ryanpriorSome day, then. :-)21:15
dylan-mYo! I'm developing a little Qt4 app with QtCreator, and I'm getting some really horrible behaviour with the Unity launcher. Wondering if anyone else is getting this…21:16
dylan-mIt's adding extra items that point to the same application (and it keeps adding more and more and more). Seems to start with my Qt app, then it happens to others as well.21:16
Amaranthdylan-m: Do you have a .desktop file for your app?21:18
AmaranthOtherwise unity can't really keep track of it21:18
dylan-mNope. It's just a single very tiny program for school. Unity adds a new launcher item every time I open and close a file dialog.21:19
dylan-mAmaranth: Here's a screenshot after I have closed my application, with the problem apparently spreading to Empathy somehow. (And Qt designer isn't actually running any more, either): http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2117279/UnityLauncherWeirdness.png21:22
Belboz9999I think I found a typo in some documentation for BasicChroot21:22
Belboz9999under Creating a chroot it reads: 1. Install the dchroot and debootstrap packages21:23
Belboz9999I believe that should read *schroot*, not dchroot21:23
Belboz9999one exists, the other does not :P21:23
* penguin42 has used the dchroot command21:24
penguin42it's in the dchroot package21:24
penguin42ah, the apt info for dchroot suggests using schroot because schroot is better21:25
AmaranthBelboz9999: That's talking about setting up a chroot on your current system21:33
AmaranthBelboz9999: debootstrap will build you a full ubuntu install21:33
Amaranthwell, a minimal one, anyway21:34
AmaranthBelboz9999: you just want to mount your / in /media/root or something when sudo chroot /media/root21:34
Amaranths/when/then/21:34
Belboz9999yeah, fudge, just got all that done, attempted a chroot and discovered I had an i686 architechture disc21:35
Belboz9999WHY oh WHY isn't it obvious anywhere in the loading, or hell even operating of Ubuntu as to which architecture the installation is?21:36
Belboz9999I could go "System > About Ubuntu"21:36
Belboz9999and it's very good at telling me that it's 10.1021:36
Belboz9999but NOTHING states the architecture type!21:36
Belboz9999have to do a uname -m21:36
Belboz9999another 30 minutes down the drain, frak!21:37
Belboz9999Oh my, you've got to be kidding me21:38
dylan-mYou can find it under System Monitor ;)21:39
Belboz9999there's a lovely, (honestly, it looks really nice) slider on the Ubuntu.com homepage showing off the Beta release of 11.04, and a nice "Try me" button included21:39
Belboz9999and when I click on that, 10.10 is the only option available!21:39
guntbertBelboz9999: please stop that monlogue21:39
dylan-m(Though I'm not sure why exactly it is called System Monitor, since it's really a general-purpose information panel, but so be it)21:39

Mamarokeamon: you are kidding, aren't you?23:08

eamon!grub223:14
ubottuGRUB2 is the default Ubuntu boot manager since 9.10 (Karmic). Lost GRUB after installing Windows? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestoreGrub - For more information and troubleshooting for GRUB2 please refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub223:14
PresuntoRJeamon: the second portion of the number is the month the release got out, 04 for april (06 in the case of 06.06 LTS) and 10 for october23:14
eamonbut te names dont go alphabetically23:15

ooki2day__pls, help23:15
eamonman the first ones had much cooler names23:15
eamonwhat's wrong ooki2day__  are you drowning?23:15
Mamarokbesides killing dpkg and having to run it again, there is an upgrade problem anyway, I doubt installing grub maunally is a valid answer for a user23:16
ooki2day__what I do: sudo ./q.run23:16
Mamarokwhatever23:16
ooki2day__what ans my konsole: cannot connect to X server :023:16
eamonMamarok: if your computer is hanging during grub thern somethings wrong with grub and it needs to be reinstalled... unless i'm nott onderstyanding you right23:17
Mamarokeamon: well, it broke in the upgrade process, read again what I wrote23:17

Mamarokthe computer doesn't hand on startup, but when upgrading23:18
eamonthe upgrade broke it I got that23:18
eamonso are you just letting us know? If so you should file a bug report23:18
Mamarokeamon: AFAICS the previous version is still here, nothing was written23:18
eamonoooh right, sorry I get it now, the upgrade won't finish23:19
Mamarokeamon: *sigh* see I won't file a bug report if this is known already, hence my question here before filing one23:19
eamonyou're better off searching the bug reports23:20
* eamon drums fingers23:20
Mamarokeamon: I did23:20
eamonyou might save some time and not have to sigh23:20
eamongo ahead and file a report, you have my blessing!23:21

skplcan i change teh size of the icons in the deskbar in 11.04?23:38
frewsxcvrww: thanks23:40
DebolazJust to repeat my question from earlier: How can I configure Unity to start all applications maximized?23:40
skplis it possible to mount a windows partition while using the live cd?23:40
penguin42I'm not aware of any modern window manager that can be configured like that - the old ones can23:41
penguin42Debolaz: You might try the program devilspie23:41
Daekdroomskp1, using compizconfig-settingsmanager23:42
torchieis there a way to make it so that my list of windows on the bottom bar isn't a series of [...] in Classic?23:42
DebolazI'm using a netbook, and need the application window to be as large as possible. Its tedious to have to always maximize the window after the application starts.23:42
DebolazI tried googling the problem, it seemed that it used to be possible to configure compiz to do it, but I can't find that option in ccsm23:42
penguin42Debolaz: You could try the 'window rules' section and put something in the Maximized box?23:44
* BUGabundo slaps who ever made the migration scripts for ff 4.223:45
DaekdroomBUGabundo, is there any difference between 4.0 and 4.2 trunk already? :o23:47
BUGabundowell, it BROKE my profile23:47
BUGabundothat's enough *differences*23:47
trismDebolaz: the Place Windows plugin has the option "Placement Mode", select Maximize23:58
