seidoswelcome friends!03:03
zimmerm hi i guess this is where i ask questions, so i recently installed ubuntu netbook on my netbook and i was wondering how i would go about installing true crypt, i went to the wbsite, and went to download the linux compatable version, and got a tar.gz which according to the site contains an executable file of some sort but i have been unable to run it03:04
zimmi was under the imprssion that in any GNU/linux based system .bin was ussualy the extension for an executable , but i may be wrong03:05
zimmso, is anyone actually here or are yu all idleing03:07
zimmyou*03:08
seidosi'm here :)03:08
zimmor just not know, or dont want to answer03:08
seidosMK`: right03:08
seidosi dunno yet, i was afk03:08
zimmso, umm, any ideas?03:08
seidosyeah, why do you want to install truecrypt?03:10
zimmlol, i keep various things encrypted, and would like to be able to encrypt more of my work on my netbook as i move around03:11
zimmrather then wait until i am home03:11
zimmshould i go ask #ubuntu ?03:12
seidoszimm: have you read this: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TruecryptHomeEncryption03:12
seidoszimm: i dunno, if you want to get it done, then i would do everything possible to accomplish it03:13
* andrew_46 is idling :)03:13
charlie-tcaMK`: it is possible to use a ram disk for /tmp, so you probably could get away with sharing it03:13
zimmi did not read that, thank you!03:13
charlie-tcaI think it would be best to clear it each time, though03:13
zimmlike i said im a bit new to linux, and am not aware where to look for help03:14
zimmso once again thanks for directing me03:14
zimmdumb question is it possible to access the regular nautilus (however that is spelled) interface in the netbook edition of ubuntu03:38
seidoszimm: you might try looking for a nautilus article @ http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Nautilus03:40
zimmlol does not exist03:41
charlie-tcazimm: try running it in a terminal?03:41
seidospackage is nautilus zimm, so that would be would you would type in terminal or alt-f203:42
zimmkk03:43
zimmlol, no reaction to alt f2, what is the run command for terminal, sudo?03:44
seidoswhat you would type, rather03:44
zimm(yes im a complete noob so to speak)03:44
charlie-tcatry ctrl+Alt+t03:44
charlie-tcayou don't need a run command, though. You just type       nautilus      and hit enter03:45
zimmahh there we go03:45
zimmok thx03:45
zimmand ok03:45
zimmthank you and im sorry if im being annoying03:46
charlie-tcanp[03:46
charlie-tcano problem03:46
BiteWhat's the easiest way to update gnome?03:46
charlie-tcawe all started someplace03:46
Bite!flood | zimm03:47
BiteWell, whatever, zimm, don't use the enter bar as punctation.03:47
charlie-tcaBite: I would think the standard updates, either using update-manager or sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade03:47
Bitesudo apt-get dist-upgrade upgrades the distro?03:47
charlie-tcanope03:47
charlie-tcain Ubuntu it simply runs the updates available03:48
charlie-tcain debian, I believe it upgrades to the next release03:48
charlie-tcaWhat are you trying to do, exactly? Upgrade releases from one to the next, install gnome 3, update the system?03:49
MK`When Ubuntu is not running, is the swap partition empty? Safe to delete if you're moving partitions around?05:03
UndiFineDMK`, it depends, if the host system is not running, but you are on a life cd, you may be using the swap as well05:10
UndiFineDbut most of the time, outside from the host, you can remove the swap05:10
UndiFineDit is easily checked in a terminal05:11
UndiFineDdf -h05:11
UndiFineDand mount05:11
MK`well I just wanted to move the swap, but thought it would be faster to just delete the swap and re-create it in the new space05:12

halpbatmanwhen you mount a remote drive to a local machine over sshfs... does the local machine need = or greater disk space than the remote disk?19:24
charlie-tcaNot to my knowledge19:25
charlie-tcaMine take something like 4mb no matter what the remote disk is19:25
halpbatmanokay cool thx charlie-tca19:26
halpbatmanI'm away from home and i wanted to access my music via sshfs19:27
charlie-tcaI access a 4gb partition using sshfs, but it still only takes 4mb19:27
charlie-tcaI think that 4mb is standard for any directory created in xubuntu, though19:28
halpbatmancharlie-tca, so it probably just maps it on your local drive19:28
charlie-tcayes19:28
halpbatmancharlie-tca, sweet it worked thx19:28

duhzawhat does recovery mode mean20:55
duhzahello20:55
duhzahello21:34
msp301duhza: hey21:35
duhzawhat does recover from broken system21:35
msp301duhza: I have not used recovery mode myself, but you can boot into rescue/recovery mode by following the steps at http://www.linuxtopia.org/online_books/system_administration_books/ubuntu_starter_guide/ch08.html#gainrootinstallcd (look at point 8.3) .. hope that helps21:39
duhzaok21:39
duhzai mean rescue a broken system21:40
msp301whenever I end up in that situation, I generally find it easier to backup all my files using a live CD and then just reinstall the system21:42
duhzashould i do that21:43
msp301I would recommend that, it only takes about 20 minutes to have a clean install again21:45
msp301what do you mean by 'broken system' though?21:46
halpbatmanhow do you transfer files from local machine to target ssh machine?22:19
charlie-tcascp localfile ip:/directory_on_target22:20
charlie-tcafor one file22:21
charlie-tcafor more than one, use22:21
charlie-tcascp -r localfile ip:/directory_on_target22:21
halpbatmanthx22:21
charlie-tcasometimes is works better to use a name, too, like22:22
charlie-tcascp -r localfile charlie@ip:/directory_on_target22:22
halpbatmando you type that after you ssh in the terminal?22:24
charlie-tcanope22:25
charlie-tcainstead of ssh22:25
halpbatmanhow do i change target port?22:26
halpbatmangot it it's -P22:28
msp301:q23:02
