drchmmm...I have resized Thunar, XChat and FF windows (for example) so that 4 fit perfectly on the desktop. If I have an empty desktop and open 4 Thunar (or detach the xchat channels) the first 2 open in upper left, then upper right and fit perfectly.  But when I open number 3 and 4 (lower left and lower right, respectively) they are offset a few pixels from the bottom edge of the desktop. I have tried almost every concievable variation in Window Manager>Advance00:05
drcd>Windows Snapping, but it makes no difference. In the following screenshot I have manually moved the bottom right window to what I want to be the correct position. Are there any configuration settings that I am missing to make this happen as I want?  http://img822.imageshack.us/i/screenshot0413201105530.png00:05
charlie-tcaGot to workspaces in settings, make sure the bottom margin is zero00:06
charlie-tcaor even try -1000:07
charlie-tcaThat will move the windows down00:07
charlie-tcaAt least that is a starting poinbt00:07
drccharlie-tca: It is 0 (all margins are 0) and won't let me go to minus numbers.00:08
charlie-tcaimprovements for 4.800:09
charlie-tcaused to let me have - numbers00:09
drcI have no bottom panel, if that matters00:09
charlie-tcabut your bottom window overlaps the top window a few pixels00:10
drcyes00:10
drcThe top of the bottom overlaps the bottom of the top :)00:11
charlie-tcaI am out of answers00:12
charlie-tcashrink the windows a touch00:12
drcI <think I tried that, but I'll make sure.00:13
drcRight, shrinking the verticle size of the windows makes the overlap go away, but it doesn't make the window align with the bottom edge of the desktop.00:16
drchmm, let me try something00:16
charlie-tcaNot sure it will align all the way to the bottom00:16
charlie-tcaIf it keeps overlapping, go to Window Manager, Advanced, use snap to other windows, and make the distance bigger00:17
charlie-tcaI snap to screen borders, which makes it try to hit the edge of the screen before it tries to hit next to other windows. a small distance helps keep it close to the screen edge00:18
drcOh well...that's what I get for trying to be too precise.00:29
drcThat's 3 :)  Off to another distro...just kidding (although you're probably get tired of my little nitpickings in a beta version)00:29
charlie-tcathey might be in final too, can't fix everything00:31
charlie-tcabut won't try to fix what we do not notice00:31
drcWell, I'm guessing they will be, this close to release.  Besides, at least 2 of the 3 are most probably xfce not xubuntu00:33
drcAnd they <are> small things, not like they crash the system00:33
drcThe team should be happy that someone has look <that> close to find something to ask about.00:36
drcSeriously good work done by all.00:37
charlie-tcaWell, okey dokey, I will try to be happy :-)00:37
drcAnd now <I> get to eat before the dog, tonight.00:37
kaevikI just installed xubuntu and the password I used isn't accepted by the authenticator. So what does it want?08:54
TheSheepthe authenticator?08:58
TheSheepwhat are you doing exactly?08:58
kaevikfor updating or hanging settings. It also didn't work when I try to relog. It will only auto login.09:00
kaevikchanging*09:00
TheSheepkaevik: that's your default user created during installation?09:01
kaevikthe user it asked me to make during the gui install09:02
Sysiwrong passwd, typo maybe09:03
kaeviknope, I was thinking that the keyboard layout from the install environment is different from the one being used in the os.09:04
kaevikthis is a laptop.09:05
kaevikso if somehow I typed and retyped a password different then I thought I was typing. I have to reinstall to fix it?09:11
ochosikaevik: you can try to set the keyboard-layout to US (i think that's default in the live-system) and try to retype your pwd09:18
ochosiother than that there's not so much you can do, losing your root-pwd is hardly ever a good idea ;)09:19
ochosi(not much apart from re-installing of course)09:19
kaevikunder settings?09:22
quupkaevik: hehe i get that too, I have different layout on the laptop keyboard and my USB keyboard now, really cunfesed me when I tried to log in09:24
quupkaevik: when the login manager shows, therer is an option to change keyboard layout furthest down on the screen after you have entered your username09:25
quupkaevik: then change to something without deadkeys at least that was the problem for me09:25
kaevikwell I got into the settings keyboard layout  and changed the keyboard to Acer Laptop still not working09:26
kaevikthe layout is set to us also09:26
quupdid you change the keyboard layout too?09:26
quupwhich US? there are very many09:26
kaevikunder USA there was an alt-intl09:34
kaevikso it didn't work on the default us or the alt-intl09:35
kaevikand a password problem was the reason I had to 'fix' the laptop in the first place.09:37
kaevikI hat win 2k but the admin password wasn't anything I ever remember setting. SO I went to reinstall and the disk was borked. So I went for this and it is having the same problem basicly.09:38
kaevikhad*09:39
ochosikaevik: maybe be more careful settings passwords then ;)09:39
kaevikI don't see how I could type a password the sme twice and this password I've used before, but type it both times  different. hmm unless the caps lock monster  attacked.09:42
kaevikGAY CAS LOCK09:49
kaevikoop heh09:49
knomekaevik, please watch your language09:49
kaevikthats what it was >_>09:49
kaevikcaps lock was on before I set the password was in reverse caps ><09:50
kaeviker I merged two sentences09:51

Rodenskyhello. xfce won't start, i get a cli instead. how do i start xfce from the cli?11:22
Rodenskyi googles it and got no answer. all i found were commands to install it, not to start it from the cli11:24
Sysiwhy you don't have GDM11:24
Rodenskyi do11:25
Sysithen problem isn't xfce but xorg11:25
Sysiwhat graphics card?11:25
Rodenskyati, i don't know the model11:25
Rodenskywhen i try startx it says "server is already active for display 0"11:27
Rodenskyand won't start :(11:27
Rodenskywhen i try "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart it goves me my  old uninstalled gnome walpaper but nothing else appears11:29
Rodenskynot even the mouse cursor. only the wallpaper11:29
Rodenskythe only thing that works in the combo ctrl+alt+f2 that brings me back to the cli11:30
Rodenskyhow do i make xfce appear again? :11:32
Rodenskywhen i try "xfce4-session" i get "Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:"11:44
Rodenskyi googles it and tries all commands i could find to start xfce. in all cases i get "server is already active for display 0"11:47
Sysixfce can't work if xserver itself fails11:48
Rodenskyok i got that from the system notices, but what do i do with that? how do i make x work and start xfce again?11:49
Rodenskyplease help me12:00

Rodenskydid what work before?12:00
Sysigraphics12:00
Rodenskyyes12:01
Sysihave you rebooted?12:01
Rodenskyyes12:01
Rodenskywhen i reboot, it's automaticaly gets into the gnome wallpaper thing i mentioned before :\12:02
Sysisounds like it's trying to go to deleted gnome, or gdm fails12:02
Sysihard to say, and i personally don't know about ati much12:02
Rodenskyit is trying to go to the deleted gnome for some reason12:02
Sysibut then there should still be even mouse cursor12:03
Rodenskyther'e no cursor, no nothing, just the wallpaper12:03
Rodenskyand the ctrl+alt+f2 that gets me back to the useless cli12:04
psaldenheya folks... wanted to say my experiment of running xubuntu natty with gnome3 in parallel worked out great. Gnome3 isn't looking very well yet, but at least the xfce sessions seems perfectly intact12:14
psaldenone thing though... I had automatic login before installing gnome 3, and now it takes me to what appears to be a gnome3-styled login screen first12:14
psaldenany way of reverting that?12:14
psaldenah there's a graphical tool for that, cool12:18
psaldenguess we'll just ignore the fact that the login screen is gnome3 styled :)12:18
psaldenhmm, am I not supposed to have an 'alpha' setting when setting panel appearance? Just upgrades to natty but don't see it12:53
Sysiyou need compositing enabled12:57
psaldenthanks, I'll look into it :)13:00
psaldeninteresting how my settings menu changed upon reboot, lol13:03
quupI have disabled 'automatically save session' but still it opens up the stuff I had before exiting, is there anotehr hidden option for this?13:19
Sysirm -rf ~/.cache/sessions/13:19
quup:)13:20
quupthanks13:20

shane4ubuntuOk, I'm giving xubuntu a try for a while, did my kde time for a few months, now it's xfce's time, how can I setup a wallpaper changer?  I noticed I can do a list, however, the backgrounds have to be added one at a time?  Is there a quick way to do this?14:21
Sysiselect multiple wallpapers by clicking with shift or ctrl?14:22
shane4ubuntuSysi: when I did that, it didn't want to accept them14:23
shane4ubuntuSysi: Oooh, wait I stand corrected, that worked this time14:23
shane4ubuntuok, I read online about a crontab to make that change, is that still the way to do it?  I don't mind setting that up, but if there is an easier way by all means let me know. :)14:25
shane4ubuntuhere is the link I am referencing: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=32879214:27
shane4ubuntuok, that doesn't seem to work, I ran that line in the commandline, and it didn't work. :(14:27
shane4ubuntubrb14:27
shane4ubuntuno background changer? like every 10min change the background?  KDE does this by default, Gnome needs a 3rd party app  there must be a way14:41
shane4ubuntuok, how about compiz for xfce?  sorry I'm a complete noob when it comes to xfce14:43
shane4ubuntu!compiz14:43
ubottuCompiz (compositing window manager), for a howto see http://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager and more help #compiz14:43
Sysiinstall and run14:44
shane4ubuntuI have it installed, I guess I should more correctly ask, how do I enable it in xfce?14:45
Sysiit doesn't work with xfwm4 but gtk-window-decorator or emerald works14:45
Sysicompiz --replace14:45
shane4ubuntuahh, ok, so I need to install emerald?14:45
Sysiyou should install compizconfig-settings-manager too14:45
shane4ubuntuthat I have14:45
Sysii'd recommend it14:45
shane4ubuntuyou recommend emerald? or gtk-window-decorator?14:46
drcAre the Xubuntu Mail lists "dead", as in no traffic?15:18
knomeno15:19
drchmmm15:19
drcTime to do some checking then15:19
knomewell they are not the most active either, but definitely not dead. seen better days...15:20
charlie-tcaThey have? It seems they are as active/inactive as they have been for three years15:22
knomei don't know about the users list, but the devel list has been more active for sure15:23
drcOK, I sub'd to -users, -devel, and -bugs a couple of days ago and have received <nothing>.  Just to make sure, I had 2 go to my regular mail server and 1 to gmail...but nothing on either15:23
drcOK, looks like at my end...Now, where did I put that shovel?15:23
charlie-tcadrc: -bugs being ? xubuntu-bugs? that is a dead ML15:24
charlie-tcaIf you want bug dicussions, you subscibe to ubuntu-bugsquad15:25
drcIf -bugs is dead, maybe someone should take it off the Bugs List on https://lists.ubuntu.com/15:45
charlie-tcaA look at the archives says there have been no posting to the ML15:47
charlie-tcaIt is at least a very low content list ;-)15:47
drctrue dat15:47

surreal7zhi guys... I am using Google Chrome and Youtube videos freezes on fullscreen?... I found that disabling hardware acceleration can help but not in my case... what to do?22:13
surreal7zs/*22:14
kebdoes it also freeze with firefox and adobe flash plugin ?22:17
kebfullscreen22:17
surreal7zjust a sec22:18
surreal7zdon't have ff but Opera is working just fine22:19
kebchrome has a built-in flash player.  did you get the latest one?22:19
kebi mean is chrome up to date22:20
surreal7z10.0.648.204   it is.... i'm not using beta/ chromium... would that help?22:20
kebmaybe22:21
kebjust trying to run through possibilities22:21
kebsurreal7z which version of xubuntu are you running? some video drivers had known bugs22:23
charlie-tcaThat is bug in chrome, not Xubuntu22:24
charlie-tcaIt occurs with lubuntu, kubuntu, and Ubuntu also22:24
kebthen the beta might work22:25
charlie-tcaand the only workaround I know is to use firefox or something other than chrome22:25
surreal7zdidn't work... beta has the same Flash plugin version  Flash (2 files) - Version: 10.2.15422:32
surreal7zShockwave Flash 10.2 r15422:32
surreal7ztoo bad... Opera will do the trick22:32

surreal7zone lower :S22:37
kebheh22:37
surreal7z10.2 r153   :D   can I downgrade flash in chrome? :D22:37
kebyou could try overwriting the files and see what happens ;)22:38
kebbut keep the other ones in case you need to roll back22:39
surreal7zI have set the same flash player version that Opera uses but problem persists... so, it's still google chrome problem :(22:47
kebdid you restart Chrome after that, maybe it was still loaded and using the old version22:53

kebit might for some videos, the ones that store a preview thumbnail in the movie file23:48
kebotherwise it is a lot of code to extract a snapshot from a video23:48
faryshtaI can't see any thumbnail at all.23:51
