Adriannomhi.  i have ubuntu studio 9.10 and two usb soundcards.  when i plug one in, it appears in pulseaudio.  when i plug the second one in, it does not.  it doesn't matter which order i plug them in.  here's /var/log/messages: http://pastebin.me/052dcc9003cca903c754e4039e098106 - any idea what's happening?12:53
ailoAdriannom, It's always the same device that doesn't appear? What is it called?12:58
ailoTwo of the same kind?12:58
Adriannomit's not always the same device that appears, it's whatever is plugged in first ailo13:00
Adriannomand yes two of the same kind13:01
ailoAdriannom, When you say, only one appears, do you mean, you only find one of them from the devices menu in pulseaudio preferences?13:01
ailoHow about jack=?13:01
Adriannomnever used jack, how do i check?13:03
ailoAdriannom, Well, ok. If you open sound preferences, and look in the tab "hardware", you only see one device?13:04
ailopulseaudio, that is13:04
ailoOr, are you using UBuntu Studio?13:04
ailoIn which case it would be opening pulseaudio volume control from the menu13:04
Adriannomcorrect, only one device.  i'm using studio 9.1013:04
Adriannomyup, only one in volume control13:05
ailoAdriannom, If you do: cat /proc/asound/cards13:05
ailoDo you see both?13:05
Adriannomyup13:06
ailoAdriannom, They will both work with jack, then, most probably13:06
ailoDon't know why pulseaudio is not showing them both. What is it that you want to do with them?13:06
ailoWhy do you want to connect two at the same time?13:07
Adriannomthe soundcards are inside a mixer, i'm using ultramixer to send to two hardware channels13:07
Adriannomhttp://djkit.com/jb-systems/mix3-usb-mixer.html?highlight=mix%20313:08
Adriannomlooking at the image of the back of it should make it clear13:08
ailoAdriannom, Ok, so it's usb1 + usb 213:08
Adriannomhm?13:10
Adriannomgrr, some apps are just not loading on here13:12
Adriannomlike sound preferences :s13:12
Adriannomand some jack apps13:12
ailoAdriannom, jack apps won't load if you didn't start jack first13:12
Adriannomaha13:12
Adriannomgo error messages ;)13:12
Adriannomso do i need to replace pulseaudio with jack?13:13
ailoAdriannom, I'm not sure how that device is supposed to work13:13
ailoAdriannom, pulseaudio is the desktop audio system. Jack is a pro audio system13:13
ailoYou don't need to replace pulseaudio13:14
ailoJust start jack13:14
ailoYou can install it by doing: sudo apt-get install qjackctl13:14
ailoThat will install the jack control program called qjackctl and jackd, the sound server13:15
ailoAdriannom, But, to use two cards at the same time, that won't happen automatically13:15
ailoAdriannom, You would need to create a custom configuration, and I'm not sure if that can be done13:15
Adriannom:o13:16
ailoAdriannom, Still, I don't know how your device is supposed to work. 2 devices sounds a little strange13:16
ailoAdriannom, Try talking with people on #opensourcemusicians and #jack13:17
ailoThere's also #alsa13:17
Adriannomailo, do you know normal mixers?13:17
ailoSure13:17
ailoAdriannom, What do you need to know?13:17
Adriannomit's like that except instead of just plugging audio jacks in as inputs you can plug usb cables in13:18
Adriannomso i can change the volumes of the music playing through each channel independantly on the hardware mixer13:18
ailoWell, usb cables are not like audio cables. Each needs a driver13:18
ailoAnd, for two devices to work at the same time, you need to create a common interface for them13:19
Adriannomcorrect.  in computer terms the mixer just has two normal usb soundcards in it13:19
Adriannomwell, i had another very similar mixer which worked fine like this before13:19
Adriannomno extra config or anything13:19
ailoTwo usb cables, on Linux?13:19
Adriannomsame os, i just got a new mixer cause the old one broke13:19
Adriannomyup13:20
Adriannommaking 3 soundcards in total13:20
Adriannom(onboard included)13:20
Adriannomall worked fine13:20
ailoWith pulseaudio?13:20
Adriannomyup13:20
Adriannomall appeared on pulseaudio separately13:20
ailoSo, you are sure they are not working as one now?13:20
Adriannomwell, maybe they are working as one, i don't know.  i don't know how to check13:21
ailoIt would sound strange to me, though13:21
ailoIf they did13:21
Adriannomyeah13:21
ailoSo, you used pulseaudio mixer to choose which card was used with which program?13:22
Adriannomseems i can play music out of both soundcards fine13:22
ailoAh, but you use a special program, you said13:22
ailoUltra mixer, right?13:23
Adriannomyeah, but i bet it'd work with any program, it's jsut using oss to play to the sound cards13:23
Adriannomi can see both soundcards fine13:23
Adriannomjust not in the volume control, and one channel is quieter than the other13:23
ailooss would be a different story all togehter13:23
Adriannomah13:23
Adriannomoss has nothing to do with pulseaudio?13:24
ailoIn oss you can use two cards just fine. But not with pulseaudio13:24
ailopulseaudio is using alsa13:24
Adriannomoooh, sorry, my mistake13:24
ailoSo, does ultra mixer not work?13:24
Adriannomit works13:24
Adriannomso i guess i could try an oss mixer13:24
ailoI don't know the specifics of oss. It is the oldest audio system13:25
ailoWhat else do you want to do, if ultra mixer already works?13:26
ailoWell, if you do have problems with pulseaudio, one way to turn pulseaudio off is to run a command like this: pasuspender -- mycommand13:28
ailoI think you have that on Karmic. Not sure13:28
Adriannomwell, if i can get an oss mixer to work then there's no problem, probably best to not try to fix it any further, after all this is a production machine :p13:29
ailopasuspender only suspends PA13:30
ailoDon't know what you are intending to use OSS for13:30
ailoAdriannom, I have to go, though13:30
Adriannomall i need to do is adjust the volumes of each soundcard because they are off13:31
Adriannomi'm researching that now.  thanks a lot for your help :)13:31
Adriannomyou've basically solved my problem13:31
ailoAdriannom, Sure. Good luck13:31
Adriannomlater!13:31
ailoAdriannom, Try alsamixer, btw. Don't know if that will work13:32
ailoUse F6 to switch between cards13:32
Adriannomfixed :D13:32
ailoOk. Good13:32
Adriannomok i'll try that, might make it easier13:33
Adriannomthanks again :)13:33
