ubuntunoobletCan someone walk me through on how to get a system monitor fpr my top panel in ubuntu 11.0400:01
ubuntunooblet?00:01
sebsebsebubuntunooblet: in Unity you can't as far as I know00:01
ArjenThe browser does open, but not 'via unity'. Odd, orgy.00:01
sebsebsebubuntunooblet: in the Ubuntu Classic Desktop well yes you can00:01
ubuntunooblet:O00:01
ubuntunoobletHow do you add a ppa?00:02
sebsebsebppa for what?00:02
lcbArjen, try fixing some things... sudo apt-get -f install && sudo apt-get check && sudo dpkg-reconfigure chromiun-ose00:02
ubuntunoobletI found one online, but I don't know how to add PPA'S00:02
sebsebsebppa for what?00:02
sebsebseband depending on where you got a ppa from, well it could contain malicious software00:02
lcbArjen, then reboot. just in case you have some ghost or zombies in ur machine00:03
ubuntunoobletsec\00:03
ArjenOr both. :o  ... I'll reboot.00:03
ArjenSorry for being a pain, lcb :)00:04
lcbArjen, then check "Preferred Applications" if google is your default bro00:04
lcbArjen, ur not. i'm not getting paid for trying to help ppl.00:04
lcbis not an obligation, it's a devotion :)00:05
lcbwow00:05
sebsebsebubuntunooblet: uh you could have put that link no problem in here00:05
bjsniderubuntunooblet, it's simple. install system-monitor-indicator and then run it00:05
sebsebseb!pm > ubuntunooblet00:06
ubottuubuntunooblet, please see my private message00:06
Arjen... The reboot worked.00:06
lcbsee....00:06
Arjen"Have you tried turning it on and off again?"00:06
lcbzombies & ghosts, Inc00:06
ArjenFailcake.00:07
ubuntunoobletHow do I install it?00:07
bjsnideradd the ppa, install indicator-sysmonitor00:07
ubuntunoobletAnd I though /msg just made the person aware that you sent them a message00:07
bin_bashDOWNLOAD Y U NO FASTER00:07
bin_bashsorry00:07
bjsniderand then run it00:07
ubuntunoobletHow do I add a PPA?00:07
bjsniderthe ppa page tells you how00:07
ubuntunoobletK00:07
bjsniderhttps://launchpad.net/~alexeftimie/+archive/ppa00:07
bjsniderjust read the friggin' instructions00:08
lcbnite nite all, time for 'a way' to run from here.00:08
aauthorpenguin42: Thanks for your help.  I forgot that the MBR uses the grub on my main (10.10) system, so I need to run update-grub there. x.x;;00:08
* Arjen cheers on lcb00:09
penguin42aauthor: Ah OK00:12
stravanyone tested emacs23 in ubuntu 11.04?00:14
strav(beta 2)00:14
penguin42strav: Did you say you had menu problems?00:18
stravyep00:18
penguin42strav: Maybe you have https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libdbusmenu/+bug/67330200:19
ubottuUbuntu bug 673302 in libdbusmenu (Ubuntu) "appmenu-gtk breaks dynamically created Emacs Gtk+ menus" [Medium,Triaged]00:19
durthey folks, [whatever]-decorator is not starting/crashing after logging in, but something starts when I invoke 'compiz-decorator &' and stays up. The usual suspects from /var/log reveal nothing. Is this unity-decorator crashing/not starting? am I using unity-decorator? Anyone shed some light? I'm using i915, Classic desktop.00:19
stravpenguin42: perfect! this is exactly what I was looking for. I was pretty sure this bug existed but couldn't find it - I'll be removing the one I entered. Thanks!00:20
penguin42strav: Just mark yours as a dupe00:20
stravpenguin42: well perhaps I spoke to fast, I'll check if uninstalling appmenu-gtk fixes the issue first.00:21
penguin42strav: It sounds like there is a really new appmenu-gtk that blacklists emacs as a workaround, not sure if it's out there yet00:21
stravthanks, I'll check it out right after confirming that the behaviour I'm experiencing is indeed due to appmenu.00:22
stravpenguin42: and it was. :)00:23
bin_bashpenguin42:  I have a problem00:28
penguin42bin_bash: Can I take a guess?00:28
bin_bashYES PLEASE GUESS00:29
bin_bash:D00:29
penguin42bin_bash: I bet the thumb install doesn't see the hard drive00:29
bin_bashpenguin42:  no my thumb drive is only 512MBs and the install is over700 lol00:29
penguin42bin_bash: That's what happens if you suck your thumb - did your momma never tell you to stop?00:29
bin_bashogod how can you see me sucking my thumb?!00:30
bin_bash:P00:30
stravNow another thing while I'm at it: I didn't saw any bug report precisely describing the issue I'm having with autohide. Namely, quite randomly but with a kinda strong probability, the unity menu fails to automatically hide. It just hangs there and typing/clicking outside of it doesn't change anything. It only would hide if I got back in the unity menu area with the mouse and move the cursor over some icons.00:30
penguin42bin_bash: so, try a new cd burn00:30
bin_bashalrighty00:31
penguin42bin_bash: And get yourself a new Thumb drive - heck 1GB drives are almost given away with corn flakes these days00:31
bin_bashpenguin42:  yeah i know i know00:31
bin_bashthis is interesting00:32
bin_bashi ran unetbootin00:32
bin_bashand it worked00:32
bin_bashbut it said it wont run off a mac only a PC00:32
bin_bashpenguin42: what do you think about that00:38
* sebsebseb Has of a little while ago, a burnt 11.04 Beta 2 CD00:38
sebsebsebhas as of, above00:38
penguin42bin_bash: There isn't much difference between a mac and a PC these days except for the logo, the price and a slight boot difference that is starting to go away00:39
bin_bashokay00:39
bin_bashI'm going to try and boot from this USB then00:39
bin_bashbrb00:39
Nick_Meisterhi guys i heard that ubuntu 11 now has wayland in it instead of x and i was wondering about 3d acceleration through noveau since ive been using nvidias binary packages up to this point00:40
penguin42bin_bash: If it was too small it won't work00:40
DaekdroomNick_Meister, nope. Wayland isn't in yet.00:40
sebsebsebNick_Meister: uh any Wayland support would be very experimental00:40
DaekdroomI wouldn't expect it before 12.04.00:40
Nick_Meisterok then another question00:40
bjsniderNick_Meister, where did you hear such an absurd thing?00:41
bin_bashhey.... i wonder if that's why the CD didn't work00:41
bin_bashthe CD is only 700MBs00:41
Nick_Meisteri have a quad core 3.4ghz amd with 9800gt and unity using twinview runs super slowly00:41
Nick_Meistereven in classical view00:41
Nick_Meisterand even on maverick if i do sudo apt00:41
sebsebseboh yeah I was just thinking btrfs, any point going with that for 11.04?  Plus is 12GB a bit to small for a btrfs partition? I am thinking snapshots take up space.  Don't know much  about BTRFS yet, since not read much about it yet.00:41
bin_bashpenguin42:  do you think that could be it?00:42
Nick_Meisterbjsnider, http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=15683300:42
penguin42bin_bash: Not sure - I actually doubt it00:42
bjsnidersebsebseb, there's no working fsck for btrfs yet00:42
Nick_Meisterso what should i do00:42
Nick_Meisterand every time i move a window there is like 10 second lag00:42
bin_bashbrb00:42
sebsebsebbjsnider: right which means what exactly?00:42
sebsebsebbin_bash: that the partitions can't fix if go wrong?00:42
Nick_Meisterand my cpu usage on a single core spikes to 100 and then it gets rotated around cores00:42
bjsnidersebsebseb, you're up the creek if the file system becomes corrupted and needs fixing00:43
sebsebsebbin_bash: wrong one00:43
bin_bashlol00:43
Nick_Meisterits really weird00:43
Nick_Meisteri get this wavy motion when i move windows around in the system monitor00:43
sebsebsebbjsnider: right yeah thought that was it, uhmm plus not sure how to use snapshots anyway, plus don't need that.  and I know btrfs support isn't exactly stable.  ok Ext4 it is then,  I am only really installing the beta 2 to try out the re done Unity with Compiz anyway.00:44
sebsebsebI tried out on a desktop with the 10.10 Unity for a bit, with Ubuntu and Lubuntu00:44
Nick_Meisteri somehow feel im getting screwed on the 11th release00:45
Nick_Meister:S00:45
sebsebsebNick_Meister: no I think 11.04 will be the 14th release of Ubuntu00:46
sebsebsebor something like that, but not the 11th00:46
Nick_Meisterwhatever ubuntu 11.04 is not performing well on my computer00:46
bin_bashNick_Meister:  it's a beta00:48
Nick_Meisterbin_bash, its coming out in few days, and it seems im the only one with that issue00:49
Nick_Meisternothing on google and a bunch of ppl scratching their heads in #ubuntu00:49
bin_bashI can't even get it to load and I'm going to have to build my own kernel for the wireless to work. I think I have bigger problems.00:49
sebsebsebNick_Meister: over a week untill it comes out, and yes itwill run horribly on some computers for various reasons00:49
bin_bashbrb guise00:50
Nick_Meisteri dunno my UI is unusable even in classic view00:51
sebsebsebNick_Meister: Unity is new, there are still performance bugs here and there it seems,  Gnome Shell may run better, but right it seems you can only have that in Ubuntu 11.04  using the ppa braking Unity, or maybe the upstream Gnome jhbuild00:51
sebsebsebaltough if classic mode is showing oddly, then yeah there's something wrong00:51
Nick_Meisterits not showing oddly00:51
Nick_Meisterthe god damn windows still lag00:51
Nick_Meisterand the more windows i get00:52
Nick_Meisterthe harder it is to move them00:52
sebsebsebhave you used previous versions of Ubuntu?00:52
Nick_Meisterbut stuff within the windows once stationary performs real fast00:52
Nick_Meisteryes00:52
Nick_Meisterwith extra stuff enabled in compiz00:52
DaekdroomNick_Meister, are you sing the Nvidia binary driver?00:52
Nick_Meisteryep00:52
sebsebsebwell there you go then, if 11.04 doesn't work out for you,  you can use a previous version of Ubuntu, or another distro even :)00:52
Daekdroom*using00:52
* sebsebseb is about to leave to replace another distro with Beta 200:53
Nick_Meisterim super frustrated ;(00:54
bin_bashpenguin42:  something exciting happened!00:56
=== yofel_ is now known as yofel
sebsebsebbin_bash: ok I am not penguin42 ,but uhmm which was?00:56
bin_bashA new error!00:56
penguin42oh01:12
durtanybody else's window decorator not starting at login? Can't find LP bug on cursory search. (i915, classic desktop)01:15
bin_bashpenguin42:  I can't even install 11.0401:18
penguin42bin_bash: From your undersized thumb drive?01:19
bin_bashfrom the newly burned CD01:19
bin_bashoh! and I got a new error!01:19
bin_bashcan not mount /dev/loop0 (cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs) on //filesystem.squashfs01:20
genecbin_bash: how fast did you burn?01:20
bin_bash24x01:20
genecmeh, marginal.  I avoid anything over 8x or 16x;  seen issues with 1 drive seeing it fine and another failing.01:21
bin_bashok01:21
bin_bash8x it is then. it seems as though I don't have a 16x option01:21
genecverify after burn I assume right?01:21
genecI'll let them read at full speed as you can re-read but you only get 1 burn.01:22
bin_bashyeah of course01:22
bin_bashI'm gonna have to get some more CDs *sigh*01:23
genecstrange to have 24x and not 16x.  not even 12x?  slim laptop-style drive or half-height?01:23
bin_bashyeah it's a laptop01:24
bin_bashI have 8x and 24x as options01:24
geneciirc, there is a way to do a verify from boot system in the target machine.01:24
bin_bashhm01:25
bin_bashI always verify I don't have unlimited CDs to burn01:25
bin_bashlol01:25
genec-beta2, right?01:25
bin_bashyep01:25
jester7Does anybody here happen to use Gwibber with Facebook?01:30
bin_bashnope01:31
bin_bashSorry broski01:31
jester7apparently nobody does01:32
jester7because it simply doesn't work...at all01:32
jester7yet, not a lot out there about it01:32
bin_bashI used pidgin01:32
bin_bashI recommend it. works flawlessly01:32
Nick_Meisterhi guys i would like to know how to edit the compositing settings for unity and how to add a panel to the new xscreen01:32
Nick_Meistercause i have two monitors as separate xscreens but only one of them has the bar01:33
Nick_Meisterand i need the second one to have it too01:33
Nick_Meistermost importantly its this behaviour  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/75771501:35
ubottuUbuntu bug 757715 in unity (Ubuntu) "Unity doesn't show launcher or title bar on 2nd X screen (dup-of: 661450)" [Undecided,New]01:35
ubottuUbuntu bug 661450 in unity (Ubuntu) "Support for multiple monitors broken" [High,Triaged]01:35
buffoh damn, just found there is a daily xubuntu build.......... didn't really need to install with alternate01:43
bin_bashif this cd doesn't work I might try the alternate install01:43
bin_bashthis dude at apple just asked if i tried to install linux using the mac install disk02:13
yofelbin_bash: did you try turning it off and on again? :P02:18
bin_bashLOL02:19
bin_bashlike 8 times02:19
bin_bash:P02:19
bin_bashSo basically I've determined that it's not reading the cd drive02:46

bin_bashThis is interesting.02:47
AlienXAnyone have any good tips for the atheros 9k stability issues with wifi? I added options ath9k nohwcrypt=1 to /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf but it doesn't seem to be helping much02:54
knightautwellhey room03:25

knightautwellhey is it possible to make the banshee music player display lyrics to songs as they are playing?03:29
knightautwell????03:32
Daekdroomknightautwell, check if there's a plugin that does that03:33
trismknightautwell: I would guess installing banshee-extension-lyrics, testing it now03:33
DaekdroomWell, that one should probably do it.03:33
knightautwellok will do i just found that lol03:33
knightautwelleven for say a japanese song?03:33
DaekdroomThose plugins have some websites they check for..03:34
trismknightautwell: it shouldn't have an issue displaying japanese lyrics, it just depends on if you have a source that can find them03:34
knightautwellanyway to add websites?]03:34
DaekdroomMost of them are english, but they might happen to have japenese songs03:34
knightautwellhey im running the update manager and its stuck updating the cache it keeps saying downloading packages but its at 13.2 MB of 13.2 MB03:35
pangaeahey all03:38
pangaea i upgraded to 11 from 10.10, when i boot with the normal kernel i get a blank screen with a flashing caps lock key03:38
knightautwelldid you update everything before you updated?03:40
pangaeano03:40
ali12341flashing caps lock = kernel panic03:40
knightautwell*upgraded?03:40

pangaeathen to 11.04 sorry for flooding03:41
pangaeahow do i fix it with the cd, ill have to burn it03:42
knightautwellcould try recovery mode?03:43
pangaeawhat would i do in recovery mode03:43
knightautwellor try to downgrade the kernel03:44
knightautwelltry a different kernel when it boots up pick the previous kernel or something i cant remember that helped me once then when you get back in update everything03:45
pangaeayeah im in the other kernel now03:46
knightautwellso that worked??03:46
pangaeai know its stupid to try to fix a computer that youre on03:46
pangaeayeah starting from an older kernel worked03:46
pangaeabut ill have to upgrade the kernel again to get to the latest?03:46
knightautwellno its not lol i almost borked my TWICE lol in the same day03:47

pangaeahahaha03:53
pangaeaat least it not windows it will reboot03:54
knightautwellhey how do i use the lyrics exstension in the banshee music player i cant figure it out03:58
trismknightautwell: go into the preferences, on the extensions tab, and enable it, then it should show up in the context tab, although I'm missing some plugins at the moment so I couldn't quite get it working yet03:59
knightautwellit keeps saying none found lol is there like a file i can edit to add lyric sites?03:59
knightautwellhey pangaea did it work?04:02
knightautwellanyone know if theres a way to manually add site with lyrics so that the banshee player can find them?04:03
trismknightautwell: the plugin has sites hardcoded, which makes sense because they all need to be scraped differently, it seems to have 5 or 6 sites built in04:05
knightautwelli know lol but its hardly finding any of my songs lol04:06
knightautwelldo you know what sites it uses?04:06
knightautwellbecause if thats the case i could manually add them to the sites04:06
trismknightautwell: it uses autolyrics, leoslyrics, lyrc, lyricwiki, and lyriki04:08
knightautwellok let me test my theory]04:09
AlienXis there a good way to reenable 2 button mice in natty to act like a 3 button mouse for highlight/paste? Looks like clicking both mouse buttons doesn't let me paste highlighted text anymore04:10

Lorthirkso if you care about gnome2 please keep it in mind09:33
xskydevilxLorthirk: Thanks a lot.09:34
vishRafa652: it means it is calling for attention, or is launching, depends on the icon animation09:37

coz_kroson,  well on the one machine I use natty  classic gnome no effect ,, but I dont like gnome's insistent path to get rid of compiz  which is far superior than mutter in my opinion12:00
krosoncoz_: true, then its an advantage of unity, using compiz12:01
krosonwhat i think is that mutter may be less buggy than compiz, thats why they used it12:01
kroson:S12:01
coz_kroson,  I dont think so,, the only advantage mutter has is more developers working on it12:02
krosonit will eventually become better than12:02
krosonand compiz might get supported soon, lets see12:02
coz_kroson,  not possible with mutter,, mutter is a compositor / window manager  as is compiz  ,, only one can be used at any given time12:03
coz_considering that compiz has essentially only one developer  and mutter many,, compiz is still ahead of the game12:03
psaldenI'm hardly familiar with any details regarding the two, but it might be part of gnome's attempt in creating its own 'identity', thereby limiting customization12:04
coz_psalden,  that has been their montra for some time... "limiting"  is always in their phylosophy12:05
krosonyes, but with 3.0 it became worse lol12:05
krosonwell it is prettier and looks better, but still lacks customization12:05
coz_this is true,, had they gone the "clever windows" route ,, i may have been impressed12:05
psaldenhmm, what's that 'clever windows'?12:06
coz_the move to Unity / compiz was a bright light  for ubuntu12:06
coz_psalden,  hold on  will get lin k12:06
krosoncoz_: just help me on this. If ubuntu uses unity on top of gnome3 for the next release, will they be able to use compiz?12:07
coz_psalden,    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsZvwyxJ9vk12:07
coz_but compiz already has most of that stuff12:07
coz_including aero snap12:07
coz_kroson,  no  because gnome3 is mutter  and that is a window manager,, you would have to disable mutter to run compiz,, and I doubt gnome3 is going to allow that12:08
psaldenthanks coz_ and agreed, that's really cool12:08
krosonso are they keeping the current base for the next release?12:08
coz_psalden,  that was advertised as  "gnome3  clever windows"  it was just a mock up  and never realized12:09
coz_kroson,  I dont know,, I haven't kept up with gnome3's progress or vision of it's future12:09
krosonok12:10
psaldenyeah guess so coz_12:10
psaldenI have been trying to google around on that issue btw but I didn't really find anything stating that unity would be based on gnome3 in the future12:10
coz_psalden,  unity  has gnome3  , I believe , in the repository,,, not sure of its functionality,,12:11
psaldenbiggest issue with both unity and gnome3 for me at the moment is the crappy performance on my high-end pc12:11
coz_psalden,  oh?  Unity is not working well there?12:12
psaldencoz_: I'm pretty sure you need to add an experimental repository, which will actually break unity12:12
coz_psalden,  ah  that sounds right12:12
psaldenwell moving windows around shocks a lot, if you know what I mean12:12
psaldenlooks terrible, visually12:12
coz_psalden,  mm  which video card do you have?12:12
psaldenand on an i7 with radeon 6970 that shouldn't be the case :p12:12
coz_ah12:13
psaldenmight be drivers for the latter, though12:13
coz_psalden,  the safest t hing to assume at this point is t hat you are running beta software12:13
eruditehermithey, can anyone help me with getting middle mouse click and scrolling to work on my touchpad?12:13
coz_psalden,   last judgement is when 11.04 is released12:13
psaldencoz_: let's hope :)12:13
psaldenright now I'm a happy xubuntu 11.04 user and can just test the others to my liking :p12:13
coz_eruditehermit,  I doubt I can help with that,, I never use laptops12:14
coz_eruditehermit,  stick around..someone should have much more experience with that than I do12:14
eruditehermitthanks12:14
krosonpsalden: afaik, gnome-shell doesnt work with fglrx12:14
psaldenlemme show you12:15
krosonand the radeon driver is not very good for your high-end card, if it works at all, dunno12:15
psaldenhttp://dl.dropbox.com/u/11848505/gnome3.png12:16
psaldenjust figured you need to install a few themes from the repository yourself and now it's looking ok'ish12:16
psaldenexcept for the top bar as you can see12:16
psaldenand indeed it's slow as hell12:16
psaldenbut it 'works' :)12:17
krosonwhat graphics driver do you use on unity?12:18
psaldenmust admit I haven't tried in a while12:18
psaldenthink I used a ubuntu-supplied version of fglrx 'back then'12:19
coz_psalden,  have you talked about this on #radeon channel?12:19
coz_the problem is , on most channels. is that 11.04 is still beta software12:20
krosoncoz_: well, and it is :)12:20
psaldenyeah not really yet12:20
krosonthat may be a problem, but the biggest one is with the drivers12:20
psaldenfor now I'm fine with xfce and yeah, let's wait for it to be released I guess12:21
krosonbe patient, drivers will get better for your card, that is very recent, from the end of the last year12:21
coz_psalden,  although reporting a bug now would be a good idea12:21
psaldenmight be right there... where to report to though? is this an ubuntu bug or a radeon one or? :)12:22
coz_psalden,  probably  a bug report to both radeon and ubuntu     with driver/card12:22
psaldenwell thinking about it it's probably radeon... when I enable compositing in xfce it's also far from fluent12:23
psaldenbut yeah, guess I should take some time and report it to some places12:23
coz_psalden,  it will , at the very least. bring attention to the issue12:23
psaldenthe driver got an upgrade yesterday btw, some improvement but far from what it should be12:24
coz_psalden,  I agree it is most likely the driver...12:24
topylihm. i thought the chromium webapp window-class stuff was fixed in unity, but my gmail app is still grouped with the main chromium entry :(12:26
psaldenah we'll see where it goes12:26
* psalden will file some bug reports tonight12:26
psaldencoz_: I take it nvidia drivers are confirmed to do this (much) better?12:33
coz_psalden, well to be honest... i prefer nvidia over ati ,,,  intel is even more reliable12:34
coz_psalden,  but that is my personal opinion12:34
coz_psalden,  althought the nvidia drivers are not opensource,,  they are more reliable for the most part12:34
psaldenI can always try to exchange this card for an equal nvidia one, but doubt they'll let me :p12:35
coz_psalden, now with nouveau  on it's way up... it may even get better for nvidia users12:35
coz_psalden,   there are people probably on this channel as well as #ubuntu and others that swear by ati ... they would be the people to speak with ,, for sure12:35
psaldenyeah I guess12:37
psaldenmaybe they have some miracle solution to this then :)12:37
coz_psalden,  possible :)12:37
_|pegasus|_Hello ;) I reinstalled my natty b2. I've a backup of my home folder which i wanted to use - but the permissions ran me into trouble. What's the default for my /home/user folder in relation to its permissions?12:40
coz__|pegasus|_,   i believe it s hould be -rw-r--r-- 112:47
coz__|pegasus|_,  for the home directory12:47
coz__|pegasus|_,  you could in terminal try   ls -la /home/yourname/.dmrc12:48
coz__|pegasus|_,   or try   sudo chmod 600 /home/<user>/.dmrc12:48
_|pegasus|_coz_: r--r--r--12:49
coz_sudo chmod 644 ~whoever/.dmrc12:49
coz_^^ I believe that should give you the correct permissions12:49
_|pegasus|_i wanted to know, which users/groups have permissions to it - by default12:49
_|pegasus|_coz_: thnx :) problem solved12:50
coz__|pegasus|_,  which part solved it?12:50
penguin42it's interesting, gnome3's gdm doesn't seem to have a language setting, and LANG etc are all unset12:51
_|pegasus|_sudo chown -R $USER:$USER /path/to/new/home12:51
coz__|pegasus|_,  cool12:51
psaldencoz_: I fear going on about this in #ubuntu will just get me caught in a fanboy war :p12:51
coz_psalden,  going on about the driver issue you m ean?  or gome3?12:51
psaldennah the driver mostly12:52
coz_gnome312:52
coz_sorry12:52
coz_psalden,  there are a few people there that use ati,,,  I am not one of them,,, Dr_willis is not one,,, but I am sure they are there,,, just asking a question is fine,, however the problem is you are on 11.04  and they will just  direct you to this channel :)12:53
ali12341i've never heard anyone try to claim that ATI drivers are good12:53
ali12341the best i have ever heard about them is "well they are getting better"12:53
kaushalhi12:54
coz_kabads,  hey welcome12:54
kaushalCan someone please guide me about this hardware -> http://www.dell.com/in/business/p/vostro-3500/pd?~ck=anav12:54
kaushalThis has been certified on Ubuntu12:55
psaldencoz_: the pozic guy actually offered to help me in pm, let's see if he can get anything done12:55
coz_psalden,  cool12:55
coz_kaushal,   you want this system for linux ...yes?12:55
kaushalThe Video Card mentioned in the specs, will it enable Unity 3D ?12:55
kaushalBasically i want to procure this hardware12:56
psaldencoz_: do you know him by any chance? he suggests I give him access to my machine, which I don't have problems with per se but a little checking wouldn't be bad :p12:56
kaushalcoz_: please suggest12:56
coz_kaushal,   that video card should be more than adequate12:56
bazhangpsalden, bad idea12:56
kaushalcoz_: ok12:57
coz_psalden,  I do not know him,, but I generally dont allow access to my machine nor do I ask to go into someone's machine,, but that is your personal decision12:57
psaldenyeah ok guess so, thanks12:57
kaushalcoz_: How did you guessed though, just curious to know ?12:57
coz_kaushal,  you know there are companies that sell linux computers with ubuntu preinstalled,,,yes?12:57
kaushalyes12:57
coz_kaushal,   system76  is one12:57
kaushalyeah12:57
coz_kaushal,  I doubt you can go wrong with nvidia I have used a 7300gt  nvidia card and unity worked just fine12:58
kaushal512MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 310M12:59
coz_kaushal,  that particular card on that system is far more advanced than my 7300gt   so I am guessing it should be fine,,,12:59
kaushalso that video card will enable unity 3D ?12:59
coz_kaushal,  sure should... after installing the nvidia driver12:59
incorrectthe only issue i have with nvidia is that during boot you end up at a text console, i encrypt my home partition, if i didn't know to type my password i would be stuck12:59
coz_kaushal,   you can google    ubuntu  thatcard    to see if there have been issues12:59
incorrecton my netbook with its intel gfx i get a lovely gui to type my password into13:00
kaushalIntegrated Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator13:00
kaushalwhat does that mean13:00
kaushalbased on the specs13:00
incorrectkaushal, means you got an intel gfx chip13:00
coz_kaushal,  ooo  if it has intel video on board  as well as nivida there could be issues,,,13:00
incorrectdisable the intel in the bios13:01
kaushalooo ?13:01
coz_kaushal,  in that case   you would want to use the intel onboard13:01
coz_kaushal,  I have seen very strange issues occur on systems with both after installing the nvidia driver13:01
kaushalso they are 2 separate Video Cards ?13:01
coz_kaushal,  if I am reading that correctly ,, yes13:02
kaushalOne is onboard and other addon ?13:02
coz_kabads,  and in that case you have to use  intel13:02
coz_kaushal,  oh!13:02
geneccoz_, incorrect: most add-in GPUs take the graphics PCI connection from onboard13:02
kaushalcoz_: so which one you recommend ?13:02
coz_kaushal,   well still... if it has intel onboard and nvidia as addon...you would still have to use the intel13:02
coz_kaushal,   I would reccomend finding a system with nvidia as the only and primary  video chip13:03
kaushalok13:03
coz_kaushal,  that's why I suggested sites like system76  and many others13:03
incorrectgenec, i've avoided buying a mobo with onboard for years so i wouldn't really know13:03
geneckaushal: do you have the nv in the system now?13:03
kaushalgenec: I have planned to buy it13:03
genecincorrect: I manage ~1000 pcs @work; 1/3+ have add-in and onboard intel13:04
kaushalI mean Dell Vostro 350013:04
incorrecti only do servers13:04
coz_genec,  you have addon nvidia with onboard intel ...yes?13:04
incorrectmy servers aren't even real any more13:04
genec8 have onboard nv w/ add-in ati and the onboard is also hidden there13:05
geneccoz_: my point: if you have onboard intel then add PCIe in graphics-designated slot, onboard disappears13:06
coz_genec,  ah ok nvidia / ati combination should not pose an issue,, for some reason intel/ nvidia  has caused issues the most extreme was  an upside down and reversed funtional desktop13:06
genecI think that's Intel's design so BIOS can't choose13:06
coz_genec,  it should be possibel to disable the onboard for sure ,, still I have seen issue s  but you are right :)13:07
kaushalUSB 2.0/eSATA combo (1)13:07
geneccoz_: I have 2 groups Intel/NV and no issues13:07
kaushalwhat does that mean ?13:07
kaushalwhich devices support esata13:07
kaushalI mean external sata ?13:07
coz_genec,  but you didnt install the actual nvidia driver on those system right?13:08
geneccoz_: with some I can actually disable add-in but not reverse13:08
geneccoz_: no.  but PCI listing doesn't show onboard13:08
coz_genec,  ok... all I know for sure is systems with both chipsets  ... intel / nvidia  onboard   only the intel can be used13:09
genecincorrect: what virtualizer?13:09
coz_genec,  virtualizer?13:10
geneccoz_: intel+nv onboard?13:10
incorrectwell, my server in the garage runs kvm13:10
incorrectmostly because hudson has a plugin to spin up and down vm's for builds13:10
geneccoz_: kvm, xen, esx(i), etc13:10
coz_genec, yes both onboard ,, there are several laptops we have encountered with both onboard13:10
incorrectbut work they contract that out13:11
incorrectwhich is sad as i used to have a server far of 300 servers13:11
coz_lol genec   you kept saying   "incorrect"   I didnt realize it was someone here with that nick13:11
coz_duh13:12
geneccoz_: both onboard seems strange; I've seen laptops with onboard Intel optional add-in NV and the Intel becomes hidden13:13
coz_genec,  right for sure,, I was puzzled when we first encountered this..but they exist  :)13:13
geneccoz_: I've also seen where the "add-in" is actually in the motherboard13:14
hardcoldHey coz_, I got it working right after you went to lunch13:14
coz_genec,  oh?  that sounds odd to my ears too :)13:14
coz_hardcold,  oh !  cool13:14
hardcoldyeah, I went to bed feeling very good, and it works great13:15
coz_hardcold,  excellent :)13:15
hardcoldthanks for your assistance13:15
coz_hardcold,  no problem  just glad it works13:15
geneccoz_: chipset-wise, it's an add-in and PCI-wise it's an add-in architecturally.  it's just built into the same board attached to the PCIe graphics pins13:15
coz_genec,  oh ok   understood13:15
geneccoz_: it's just that the GPU chip happens to be mounted on the mobo PCB13:16
penguin42isn't this what the VGA switcheroo is for?13:16
coz_genec,  ok now I understand,,,13:16
coz_penguin42,  well with the systems we talked about with an "addon" feature  the onboard should disable automatically when the addon card is installed13:17
coz_penguin42,  with dual chipset systems  that doesnt seem to be the case,,13:17
geneccoz_: instead of a separate PCB, yes13:17
penguin42coz_: It is on some laptops; my work laptop has intel+ati and you can switch between them13:18
genecpenguin42: auto-detect versus force onboard?13:18
penguin42genec: You can force it in either direction in the bios or you can dynamically change from the OS13:18
coz_penguin42,  mm  ok ... I am not up on all laptop configurations... i only recall about 5 systems with intel / nvidia that would not work with the nvidia driver13:18
genecpenguin42: wow.  that's unique.13:19
penguin42genec: No, it's pretty common in the last few years13:19
coz_mm  then hopefully the systems with both intel / nvidia will have this option as well13:19
penguin42genec: The idea is when you do normal office stuff you run with the lower power intel and when you want some 3d action you boot up the nvidia13:19
genecpenguin42: I guess I haven't played enough with the mixed laptops recently13:19
coz_they are out there :)13:20
penguin42genec: I know the kernel feature for it is called VGA switcheroo, I'm not sure how you actually use it13:20
genecpenguin42: nice idea; makes sense.  most of the discrete cards in the desktops I manage add ~10 watts idling.13:20
penguin42genec/coz_: http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Vga_switcheroo seems to be some notes on it13:20
coz_penguin42,  oh a re compile of the kernel ... ooo13:21
penguin42https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HybridGraphics has the ubuntu setup - it's already on in the ubuntu kernel13:22
penguin42right, breakfast13:22
coz_oo I need breakfast also... but need to read that hybrid grphics section13:23
genecI see lots of how to use but I wonder if anyone has a list of some systems...13:26
bullgard4My Gajim 0.13.4 forgets its password although I asserted "Keep in mind password". I deleted Gajim's configuration file and confgured Gajim anew. But things did not change. In seahorse > "Passwords and Encryption" > Passwords > Passwords:login there is no Gajim entry. How can I enter here the Gajim password?13:35

bhaveshand I dunno what to select from this : http://www.nvidia.co.in/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-in14:22
bhaveshI dont find any GeForce 6150SE in it14:22
bhavesh:(14:22
coz_bhavesh,  that would be  gforce 6 serirs14:22
bhaveshits just 400, 500 series..14:22
KM0201bhavesh, i personally wouldn't do that.. but.. thats just my opinion.14:22
bhaveshok14:22
bhaveshI would like to try it out.14:22
coz_bhavesh,  do you know how to run that ?14:23
bhavesherm no14:23
coz_bhavesh,   if it runs doesnt mean it is going to work14:23
KM0201when your PC turns into a cool box of plastic.. lemme knw... :)14:23
bhavesh..14:23
bhaveshIt seems I should not install but..14:23
jiohdibricks can be useful14:23
bhaveshthe current one is not runny well14:23
coz_bhavesh,  well once downloaded you first need to be sure you have   certain things installed14:23
KM0201jiohdi, only when building a sidewalk14:23
coz_hold on14:23
bhaveshi mean its lagging14:23
KM0201bhavesh, well what makes you think its a video driver that is causing it to lag?14:23
jiohdiyou can always back up the important stuff and reinstall as needed, its not that hard14:23
coz_bhavesh,   you need  build-essential14:24
KM0201jiohdi, true...14:24
jiohdiin my first couple of linux months I think I re-installed about a dozen times14:24
KM0201well yeah...lol14:24
coz_bhavesh,  then  ctrl+alt+F1 ...log in... cd to the location of t hat downloaded driver and then run     sudo sh NV     << hit the tab button to complete the name,,,say yes to all questions  then reboot with    sudo  init 614:24
bhaveshO.o14:25
coz_bhavesh,  but it may not work  or it might break things14:25
jiohdisince 9.4 and a new computer, I have not had to reinstall in possibly over two years now14:25
coz_bhavesh,  then y ou would have to uninstall it14:25
bhaveshits not even in the list14:25
coz_bhavesh,  to uninstall a manually installed nvidia driver you would use this command     sudo /usr/bin/nvidia-installer --uninstall14:26
bhavesh6150 SE is not in the list14:26
coz_bhavesh,  that is the gforce 6 series14:26
bhaveshik.. i am talking abt the options in product14:26
jiohdiif an app is in bin you do not need the path to make it run, nvideia-installer --uninstall should work14:26
bhaveshthere is 6150 LE and one with only "6150" but no 6150 SE14:27
coz_bhavesh,  it has a 6150  in that list14:27
bhaveshyup14:27
coz_bhavesh,  that is the one to use14:27
bhaveshright before installing... I am already thrilled by KM0201's statement "when your PC turns into a cool box of plastic.. lemme knw... :)"14:28
coz_bhavesh,  if it fails to install because of kernel compatibility then just type   sudo   restart gdm14:28
KM0201bhavesh, you never, never know... :)14:28
bhaveshand u said " it may crash things up"14:28
jiohdibtw, just found a nice little program called kmousetool which allows you to just hover to make it click, no clicking required14:29
coz_bhavesh,  I have not tried installing the official nvidia driver on natty ,, let me try it on my other machine hold on14:29
bhaveshok14:29
coz_bhavesh,  ok it installed an rebooting now hold on14:36
coz_mmm taking extra long to reboot  hold on14:38
KM0201feel the fail!14:39
KM0201;)14:39
coz_bhavesh,  ok tried another reboot..  even though the driver installed with no errors.. so far it is NOT booting properly14:39
coz_stuck after checking battery state14:40
KM0201\o/14:40
coz_ nature call be right back14:40
bhaveshO.O14:42
jiohdio.O14:42
jiohdiis the official release still 042911?14:43
KM0201!isitoutyet14:43
ubottuIt's way too early for it to be out; check back on the 28th.14:43
bhaveshlol14:44
Feldegast#kubuntu+1 is invite only, i just upgraded to kubuntu 10.10 to test it and want to discuss issues i am seeing14:44
KM0201jiohdi, i would anticipate the 28/29th... maybe even the 30th.14:44
KM0201Feldegast, thats cuz kubuntu sucks.14:44
Feldegaster upgraded to kibunti 11.0414:44
KM0201i've never understood why they made their +1 channel invite only.14:45
KM0201gof igure.14:45
* Feldegast never liked the gnome interface14:45
ali12341bug 70398814:45
ubottuLaunchpad bug 703988 in appmenu-gtk (Ubuntu) "(various) crashed with SIGSEGV in g_atomic_int_exchange_and_add()/g_variant_unref/?libappmenu.so/g_simple_async_result_complete" [Medium,Fix released] https://launchpad.net/bugs/70398814:45
ali12341supposedly that bug is fixed, but i can reproduce it with fully updated natty14:45
KM0201i tried KDE the other day on a USB drive(live usb).. i swear after 15min i was ready to set my laptop on fire14:45
KM0201how frustrating14:45
coz_ok back and still has now booted14:46
coz_not booted rather14:46
coz_time for a reinstall :)14:46
bhaveshlol14:46
bhaveshso it failed?14:46
KM0201w00t!14:46
KM0201coz_, can you boot rescue and uninstall the driver?14:47
bhaveshwell ty for testing it for me :)14:47
KM0201*recovery14:47
KM0201bhavesh, its the +1 channels motto... "We spend 4mo reinstallng Ubuntu, so you don't have to"14:47
bhaveshKM0201: 4mo?14:48
coz_KM0201,  I am in text console now so I will uninstall to see what damage was caused14:48
KM0201coz_, gotcha14:48
KM0201bhavesh, yeah, there's only 6mo between releases14:48
bhaveshoh months..14:48
Feldegastin kubuntu for 10.10, i have my taskbar at the bottom of the screen, in 11.04 it is still at the bottom but the menu's and popups all apear at the top of the screen14:48
KM0201alphas usually come out around 3-4mo before release(if not sooner)14:48
KM0201ah i see, you didn't get my abbreviation for months.14:49
bhaveshlol yes14:49
bhaveshbut I thought it would be months14:49
bhaveshmy update manager is saying it again and again14:49
bhaveshDo partial upgrade? huh? I completely installed 11.04....14:49
coz_uninstalling the driver worked,, going to try to uninstall the  ubuntu nvidia driver and reinstall offcial14:50
bhaveshok14:50
penguin42coz_: It's normally best to stick with the ubuntu packaged nvidia binary drivers rather than installing from nvidias site14:50
Feldegasti saw a lot of gnome package install failures during the upgrade too14:50
* Feldegast will see if gnome works later14:51
coz_penguin42,  yes I am aware of that ,, but want to test with the packaged drivers removed  anyway14:51
bhavesh!gtk14:51
ubottuGTK is the !GIMP toolkit, which forms the base of !GNOME and is used by many applications to provide a !GUI14:51
coz_penguin42,  no big deal,, its time for a reinstall anyway14:51
penguin42ok then14:51
bhaveshhmm? GTK 2.x is GNOME 2 compatable or gtk 1.x14:52
bhaveshdont understand anything14:52
KM0201is anyone else not gtting update notifications?14:53
goodtimeyes14:53
KM0201iv'e not gotten them since beta 1 for some reason14:53
KM0201ok, so long as its not just me14:54
goodtimei havent yet with this os14:54
coz_bhavesh,  well gtk2 is not gnome2  but gnome 2 is based on gtk2 which is the gimp toolkit14:54
KM0201haven't yet what?... gotten update notifications?14:54
bhaveshcoz_ ok :)14:54
goodtimeright14:54
KM0201ok.14:54
slipbodd_Hey guys, my system is freezing from time to time, cursor moves, but UI is not responding at anything14:55
bhaveshI get notification to do partial upgrade =\ (always) even if I cancel14:55
KM0201well, i've been runnimng apt-get upgrade and apt-get dist-upgrade, to make sure i'm current14:55
slipbodd_I have Kubuntu 11.04 b2, nouveau drivers.14:55
slipbodd_Is it natty problem or nouveau one?14:55
slipbodd_Or kernel issue?14:56
goodtimethat too happens to me and idk wtf is wrong lol14:56
slipbodd_Any workaround to fix this?14:56
* KM0201 has had zero problems w/ 11.04 thus far... but i've not put it on my Nvidia machine yet14:56
BluesKajHiyas all14:57
slipbodd_And I can't reproduce this bug14:57
KM0201o/ BluesKaj14:57
goodtimeim sure it is but i wouldnt reinstall,id just try to fix it even if i dont know how realy14:57
goodtimereinstalling is for windows14:58
slipbodd_The only way for me is to reboot the system14:58
slipbodd_Since it's not responding at all14:58
hardcoldI'm curious about the software selection in different releases, specifically rhtyhm box prior to 11 and banshee from 1114:59
hardcoldis this based on voting or politics?15:00
hardcoldI put rhythm box on to get some radio streaming as banshee has no channels by default15:00
hardcoldI've just tried adding a station from websities and rhtyhm box understands these should be put under "radio"15:01
KM0201hardcold, i think there's probably various reason for it.. many f which most of us will probably never know... Pidgin nixed for Empathy.. Gnomebaker for Brasero.. the list really goes on and on15:01
hardcoldbut banshee does not understand that15:01
hardcoldI guess my main question is if it's primarily driven by compatibility and performance15:02
KM0201hardcold, i'm sure there's a reason, but honestly, is it something to get worked up about? rhythmbox takes only a minute to install.15:02
KM0201i guess i could see if they removed it, and took it out of the repositories, and made it to where you had to compile it from source.. but the fact it's only gonna take about 1min to reinstall... dunno, just doesn't seem like something to get worked up about.15:03
hardcoldit's not about getting "worked up" by trying to understand the reason15:03
hardcoldfor example, if it was mainly about stability15:03
KM0201hardcold, and thats what i'm saying.. i don't think there really is a "good reason"...15:03
KM0201hardcold, you gotta remember, as the OS gets bigger and bigger, they ahve to cram more and more onto the ISO, (which has to fit on a CD)15:04
KM0201maybe they said... Well, we're out of space, but if we substitute banshee for rhythmbox, we come in just under the size we need15:04
hardcoldI tried Evolution Mail, but this crashed the system on boot, so I downloaded Thunderbird which works fine15:04
slipbodd_So, anybody else have freezing problem?15:04
KM0201so thats what they do.15:04
jiohdiI used to have freezes when the memory was not sufficient or the hardware was not15:04
jiohdinothing after upgrading a bit15:05
hardcoldthat's another question, then, regarding stability15:05
KM0201personally, i'd like to see Ubuntu install with no apps... just the desktop and associated applications (Gedit, synaptic, etc..)15:05
hardcoldI have 2GB ram15:05
KM0201any "applications" web browsers, email, etc.. the user would install15:05
hardcoldI assumed this would be sufficient for Ubuntu15:05
jiohdi2 gb s/b enough15:05
jiohdi1 is enough15:05
hardcoldSHould I add antoher 2gb?15:05
KM0201two gigs is plenty, i'm on a laptop w/ 1.5, and it's doing great15:05
jiohdidepends on what you are doing15:05
slipbodd_I have 2 gigs of ram15:05
hardcoldjust web browsing, mail, etc15:06
coz_ok that didnt work either,,, bhavesh   no bother with that15:06
jiohdifreezing at 2gb usually means hardware issues15:06
goodtimehmmm15:06
* KM0201 applauds coz's ubuntu attitude..15:06
KM0201lol15:06
hardcoldthat's interesting what you said about size15:07
hardcoldI didn't consider that15:07
hardcoldkeeping it under 700mb's is quite the task I guess15:07
DaekdroomWhat? The LiveCD?15:08
KM0201hardcold, not saying thats the reason.. was just saying, that could be one reason15:08
KM0201i don't think it always comes back to usability... gotta remember, they gotta put enough on a live cd, to hook a new user15:08
slipbodd_Hmm, I don't have intel gfx card, but15:08
slipbodd_[   27.625376] hda-intel: IRQ timing workaround is activated for card #1. Suggest a bigger bdl_pos_adj.15:08
coz_when the release is out  the mini install iso will become more readily available15:08
Daekdroomslipbodd_, that is audio15:09
slipbodd_WTF is this?15:09
slipbodd_I don't have any intel hardware15:09
DaekdroomAccording to that, you do.15:09
DaekdroomWhich is no surprise.15:09
KM0201lol15:09
penguin42slipbodd_: Most of the audio hardware shares stuff with the intel driver15:10
DaekdroomMy ATI card has a Intel chip for the HDMI audio, for example.15:10
DaekdroomMy motherboard has a Intel chip for the regular audio too :P15:10
hardcoldif I could get my computer to connect to a wireless network, then I'd have a fully usable system15:11
penguin42hardcold: Which wireless chip?15:11
KM0201hardcold, wellw hat is your wireless device?.. first i've saw you mention a wireless problem15:11
hardcoldLet me check. I have the x120e15:11
hardcoldI'll see what card they stuck in there15:11
KM0201that doesn't say much.15:11
KM0201hardcold, just type lspci in a terminal, find your wireless device, and tell us what it says15:12
KM0201what the manufacturer says, is almost 100% irrelevant 99% of the time15:12
hardcoldRealtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8188CE15:12
KM0201hardcold, that doesn't work out of the box?15:12
hardcoldnope15:13
hardcoldI can see networks15:13
KM0201i've got one of those thats a USB.. it works w/ 10.10 perfectly (not tried it w/ 11.04 yet.15:13
hardcoldbut it will not connetc15:13
KM0201hmm15:13
KM0201have you tried connecting to a network w/ no security ? (open)15:13
hardcoldyep15:13
hardcoldof course15:13
KM0201also make sure your user is set up to be allowed to use wireless devices15:14
hardcoldI did that too15:14
KM0201yeah, it should be out of the box, but you never know;15:14
hardcoldI'd like to take it outdoors and show people it15:15
hardcoldbut, until I can connect to a wireless network, that's not happening15:16
slipbodd_Y ubuntu don't have experimental mesa drivers installed by default for full 3D experience?15:16
hardcoldHello JanC15:18
coz_ok reinstalling via mini  cd15:18
KM0201woot15:18
hardcoldwhat's a mini cd?15:19
coz_hardcold,  the minicd is about 19 megs and the entire system ins downloaded from the net for installation15:19
hardcoldholy crap15:19
coz_hardcold,  but with the mini cd you get choices  of gnome  kde  etc etc including servers15:20
hardcoldI see15:20
coz_hardcold,  so the mini yyou dont have to download separate cds for each version just choose the one you ant15:20

ubottuLorthirk: Gnome 3 is not currently supported on Ubuntu. A PPA is available at https://launchpad.net/~gnome3-team/+archive/gnome3 but these packages are _experimental_, _unstable_ and may break your system.16:18
coz_murlidhar,  which is a bit puzzling  however you may be able to google a way to bipass that or update the bios  which may have the inclusion of changing that16:18

Robbsterhumm, all sorts of things are breaking now and trying to send reports.17:25
lwizardlwhy the horrible gui change in 11 ?17:25
Robbsterokay, let me check on launchpad for.17:25
itguruI'm testing my laptop with Natty, and I'm listing the features that are not working out the box, but I've been tampering with this install to get things working. Is there a framework for how to test a release on your hardware?17:27
Robbsterlwizardl: it is call Unity and it is the redesigned interface, The Ubuntu team have taken some of the best parts of the Ubuntu Netbook remix and added a lot of new features.17:27
Robbsteritguru: good question. I'd be happy to do the same with this laptop I'm working on now.17:27
lwizardlRobbster, exactly why make a netbook interface the default on a standard desktop os version17:28
itguruRobbster: I'm running a inspiron duo magical flip tablet netbook combo (i like this machine!) and there are some things which don't work like the touch screen, but I can't tell in the bug tracker if someone else has already beat me to it, and if so, the progress17:29
Robbsterlwizardl: they took some of the usage patterns and redesigned much of the way that people work with the interface. You should take a chance to read more about. I've not even seen it yet.17:29
Robbsterbut Canonical did some good usability research and these are some of the enhancements that are coming through.17:30
lwizardli've used it for about a week now (including my time with beta1) and can say its horrible. kinda like how bad winME was bad17:30
Robbsteryou can always switch to the 'classic' interface which feels more like the standard Gnome desktop that you may be more familiar with.17:31
lwizardland if this will be the standard GUI from now on then I need to figure out how to force classic as my default17:31
coz_lwizardl,  just log off  and log into the classic17:31
itgurulwizardl: After the first time you select it it' the default for that user17:31
coz_lwizardl,  it will remian in classic until you change it again17:32

KM0201aguitel, it doesn't boot at all, or it doesn't boot satisfactorily? (ie, no 3D, etc.?)17:57
Robbsterarand: but the card is supported with open source drivers and is supposed to be capable of supporting the 3D interface. I just don't know how to get it there..17:58

KM0201!sudo | ubuntuguy18:14
ubottuubuntuguy: sudo is a command to run command-line programs with superuser privileges ("root") (also see !cli). Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo for more information. For graphical applications see !gksu (GNOME, Xfce), or !kdesudo (KDE). If you're unable to execute commands with sudo see: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/fixsudo18:14

KM0201you use sudo apt-get install packagename... it'll ask for your password, then install the package18:16

damadprofhi, I have a small problem with natty; when I boot to log-in screen and choose 'ubuntu' it loads a screen with nothing on, I can move my mouse around but nothing at all.  If I choose 'ubuntu classic' it loads perfectly fine, what differences are there between the two?18:29
KM0201well, repos go down sometimes.. could be a server went down for some reason, network failure.. it doesnt necessarily mean they took it down18:29
bin_bashdamadprof:  I think the difference is unity versus gnome. What graphics card do you have/>18:29

KM0201damadprof, do you have the 3D driver working properly?... cuz if you don't, unity won't load18:30

damadprofoh yes, that is now activated18:31
KM0201ok... have you restarted since activating it?18:31
damadprofseveral times18:31
KM0201honestly, i don't know.. ATI can be problematic w/ Linux sometimes when it comes to 3D.18:32
KM0201remove card, go buy an Nvidia.. problem solved.. :)18:32
damadprofeach time it loads classic perfectly but not ubuntu18:32
KM0201right, it will load Classic correctly, becuase it doesn't have 3D.18:32

KM0201go to system/preferences appearance18:32
KM0201when you're there... I elieve one of the tabs is "Visual Effects"18:33

bandit63they will patch the kernel and all will be good19:45
KM0201because.. you want to downgrade to an older model.. if your aunt has a thumb drive, your problem si solved19:45

bin_bashLOL19:46
bin_bashbandit63:  I got the computer for free. Didn't pay a cent.19:47
trismknightautwell: also, did you add the tag as Lyrics, it may be case sensitive19:47
bandit63bin_bash, i know but its still ironic :P19:47
ynotme-aren't failure rates on 2009 and above apples high ?19:47
KM0201bandit63, i said the same thing earlier19:47
KM0201lol19:47
knightautwellis there a certain format the lyrics have to be in?19:47
bin_bashbandit63:  lol yeah it is. I'd have money if I didn't have to shell out 300 bucks to my lawyer.19:47
trismknightautwell: no, any text should do19:47
bandit63how are you going to get the iso onto the usb drive?19:48
KM0201OHHHH thats right.19:48
KM0201Macbooks are notorious for that19:48
knightautwellso not like <lyrics> text of lyrics <lyrics>19:48
bin_bashbandit63:  unetbootin?19:48
* KM0201 can't believe there's not a ISO to USB utility for macs19:48

bin_bashI have an iMac19:49
bandit63ppc or intel?19:49
bin_bashand the macbook works. I'm  on it right now19:49
bin_bashppc19:49
trismknightautwell: yeah you can just type the text in the Text: section of the dialog that comes up after you add the Lyrics tag, you don't need html-style tags19:49
KM0201bandit63, he just can't boot a Linux CD on it.19:50
bin_bash^19:50
knightautwellok i tried both just to check and i only have one tag on it?19:50
bandit63whats the error he gets?19:50
bin_bashI get a couple19:50
KM0201bandit63, he linked it earlier, and tried a fix that was in another thread... no joy19:50
bin_bashWhen I try 11.04 I get this: "Unable to find medium containing a live file system"19:51
KM0201Ghostrider responded in the negative.19:51
bandit63have you tried the alt-installer?19:51
KM0201hmm, thats a good point19:51
bin_bashWith the other distros I've tried (Puppy, ArchBang) I get: /bin/sh: can't access tty: job control turned off19:51
KM0201but i doubt that'll work either.19:51
ynotme-hard drives in imacs fail like mad19:52
trismknightautwell: can I see a screenshot of kid3 after you have added the Lyrics tag?19:52
bin_bashynotme-: I've had that baby since 2006 and the HDD is a charm. Had the logicboard replaced twice and the LCD replaced twice though19:52
knightautwellyea hold on.19:52
ynotme-thats an older model19:52
KM0201trism, i build computers (hobbyist) for friends, family, occasionally for money... and i've noticed a HUGE decline in hard drive quality.. not just on macs, but from Seagate, WD, Hitachi, etc.19:52
ynotme-what brand do you recommend today19:53
ynotme-KM0201 ?19:53
KM0201ah.. honestly, they all suck19:53
KM0201the one that seems to be the best now though19:53
hardcoldkm0201, mac's use seagate, wd, hitachi, etc., Apple doesn't make HD's...19:53
KM0201is the Hitachi Spinpoint19:53
ynotme-thank you19:53
KM0201hardcold, i know that.. my point was.. its not mac's fault..19:53
KM0201ynotme-, if you order though, KEEP YOUR DOCUMENTATION AND WARRANTY INFO... just in case it fails...19:54
bandit63it could be "apples" fault if they did something wrong with the design19:54
Sonjamy notification area disappeared from my bar19:54
Sonjano wifi info19:54
Sonjai tried adding it back, and it seems to be there, but no icons in it19:54
KM0201bandit63, well, apple just orders a hard drive.. they don't personally make them.19:54
ynotme-i always keep receipts and usually the info is on the hard drive itself19:54
bin_bashOkay. I'm going over to my aunt's. I'll find out if she has a thumb drive. At which point. YAY! If not. :(19:54
Sonjais there a way i can connect to wifi without gui?19:55
KM0201Sonja, are you using unity, or gnome-classic?19:55
Sonjagnome classic i believe19:55

bin_bashKM0201:  Okay I'll be back in a bit. hopefully with a thumb drive!19:55
bandit63bin_bash, does it read the cd then error out?19:55
KM0201no, unity is out... bu tif you're on Gnome Classic, and you have no wireless icon.. add to your panel... "Notification area" and if that doesn't do it, add "Indicator Applet"19:55
bin_bashbandit63:  yeah basically19:55
bandit63then its not a cd drive problem19:56
bandit63i found a thread that might help19:56
bin_bash:O19:56

KM0201:)19:56
KM0201bandit63, we know its not a cd drive problem19:56
bin_bashbandit63:  link to threa?19:56
KM0201its a problem w/ the chipset on the motherboard(that runs the cd drive) not properly being recognized by the linux kernel19:56

Sonjaif it's safe to upgrade to unity, i'll do that19:57
trismknightautwell: hmm, even if I type it in lower case, it automatically capitalizes it, so that can't be the issue19:57
knightautwelli know lol im uploading it now post a link in a sec19:58
ynotme-i have a question.  my cpu and motherboard support turbo boost like the i7's maxxed out under previous released it would never go into turbo under windows it had required a utility to step up to turbo19:58
KM0201Sonja, are you sure you addedn otification area?19:58
bin_bashbrb guise19:58
bandit63could be a gfx card problem not a chipset19:58
bandit63have you tried changing the kernel boot options bin_bash ?19:58
KM0201bin_bash, good luck, may the force be with you... if you don't think asking is working, get on your knees and beg and whine19:59
KM0201bandit63, ys he has.. that was suggested in another thread on this subject.. didn't work19:59

Sonjai think i did this: http://www.killertechtips.com/2009/04/26/disable-notifications-in-ubuntu-904-jaunty-jackalope/20:04
bandit63if you are running unity then that was not what you wanted to do20:05
bandit63probably'20:05
Sonjai don't think i'm on unity20:05
Sonjathe bar thingy looks the same as 10.1020:05
trismSonja: all you need to do for that is: sudo apt-get --reinstall install notify-osd;20:05

KM0201Sonja, you gotta turn it on... its disabled by default20:06
hardcoldCan Ubuntu share an ethernet connection via wifi like OSX?20:06
bandit63ehehehe20:07
FoolishOwlI noticed that a package, fgfs-base, is available as 2.0.0-1 as a source package, but 1.9.0-1 as a binary package. Is that a bug to report, or is it something that will be handled automatically?20:07
bandit63:|20:07
knightautwelltrism_ you still here?20:13
mongywhat was the name of that package I need to remove to get back the plain panel in classic mode.20:14
knightautwellheres the link to my screenshot      http://s1177.photobucket.com/albums/x346/knightautwell/?action=view&current=Screenshot-1.png20:15
FoolishOwlSo there's an up-to-date source package, but not an up-to-date binary package. Is that a problem to report?20:16
KM0201knightautwell, looks pretty good.. are you using unity?20:17
KM0201well, obviously not.20:17
knightautwellwell im on classic atm20:18
trismknightautwell: looks correct to me, so it doesn't show up if you set the combobox in the lyrics tab in exaile to Local?20:18
knightautwellnope i set it to local and any and it still doesnt20:19
=== bandit63 is now known as bandit-away
trismknightautwell: very odd20:21
knightautwelli know lol20:22
piccaanyone here used autofs to mount a directory into your encrypted home directory and if so how did you get it to work properly20:22
trismknightautwell: my only guess is that maybe exaile is having a problem with one of the other tags, maybe there is something in one of the ~/.local/share/exaile/logs/20:28
FoolishOwlIf there is a source package available, shouldn't there be a corresponding binary package? If there isn't, is it a problem, and who should I talk to about it?20:30
Sonjai'm getting kernel problems now20:31
Sonjais that normal? :)20:31
knightautwellok ill chcek it out20:32
trismknightautwell: might also try removing the tag 1 fields, looks like there are some invalid characters for that section in there, might be an issue20:33
knightautwelli did once i just added them back and stil ldidnt show20:33
knightautwell*didnt20:33
=== Lorthirk`ZNC is now known as Lorthirk
trismknightautwell: hmm, well the logs won't be any help, I found a file here that won't show lyrics as well, but exaile doesn't show any errors even with --debug on20:38
knightautwellso im out of luck lol?20:39
Sonjai thnk i'm on beta1 how do i upgrade to beta2?20:43
guntbertSonja: if you update your system you are on beta220:44
FoolishOwlSonja, I think if you keep up with the updates, you're already using beta2.20:45
Sonjait didn't switch on Unity i dont think20:45
trismknightautwell: nope, I found it, you need to have the Title and Artist tags properly set or exaile throws a LyricsNotFoundException before even looking at the lyrics tag20:54
knightautwellwait hu? i had them right tho what do you mean20:55
trismknightautwell: in the screenshot they have invalid characters that may be causing it to fail, and you can't just delete them because if they are not there, it fails too20:58
knightautwelldoes the album artist have to be the same as the first tag also?20:58
knightautwellok hold on let me change them20:59
trismknightautwell: try installing id3v2 and then run: id3v2 -l path_to_file; and pastebin the results (if changing them doesn't work)20:59
bin_bashKM0201:  you still here?21:05

knightautwelli found out what the problem was lol21:08
hardcoldbin_bash I'm on day 2 of using ubuntu, or any version of linux, so I can't assist, but I'd be curious to hear about what was going on21:08
bin_bashAh. I used Ubuntu 10.04 for several months. I'm having linux withdrawal. Sometimes I ssh into my server just to watch things install from the command line.21:09
coz_:)21:09
hardcoldbin_bash so you want it for personal rather than professional reasons?21:10
bin_bashhardcold:  yeah21:10
knightautwellwell i g2g be back on later21:10
hardcoldbecause you were talking about replacing the computer with an older one21:10
hardcoldIf it's personal, than just wait a bit until it's fully supported21:11
bin_bashYeah. I'm also having my mom send me an old dell laptop.21:11
bin_bashShe's like "Why would you want this it doesn't even have a wireless card!'21:11

lwizardlcoz_, how fixes to the right click menu21:13
hardcoldbin_bash did you discuss your issue with coz_? He is pretty sharp21:13
coz_lwizardl,  oh,, ah  mm,, you you have fixes for it or suggestions for improvements?21:13
bin_bashcoz_:  I am having the most AWESOME issue EVER!21:13
coz_lol21:14
coz_bin_bash,  ah oh  I am now pressed to come up with a solutions of which I may nothing about :)21:14
rwhittlea bug that should never be fixed ? :)21:14
lwizardlsuggestions for an inprovement. one issue has been around for a long time and never seems to be found a way to change it21:14
coz_lwizardl,  that's interesting  really,, I am not sure   ,, you could try #ubuntu-dev  channel21:14
coz_lwizardl,  which is the one issue that has been around for a while?21:15
lwizardlcoz_, ok will try in that21:15
lwizardlcoz_, when you right click on almost any file you get the option to compress it, except ISO images21:15
bin_bashSo, I have this computer, it's a 2011 MacBook Pro 8,1. I have 10.04 installed but I can't do ANYTHING with it (not even ethernet internet) because there aren't any drivers! When I put in the 11.04 CD it gets past the spalsh screen and loads init and then says "Unable to locate medium containing a live file system"21:15
coz_lwizardl,  but arent iso's  already compressed?21:15
coz_let me try here21:15
coz_lwizardl,  yes no option to compress an iso21:16
bin_bashWhen I try Puppy or ArchBang, I get /bin/sh: can't access tty: job control turned off21:16
hardcoldbin_bash, did you try 10.10?21:16
lwizardlwell lots of people prefer to make iso images into multipart files example 100mb rar files to keep for later use21:16
bin_bashyeah same thing21:16
coz_bin_bash,  this is for an installed system...yes?21:17
hardcoldbin_bash, do you have windows installed on that?21:17
lwizardlI do it all the time for mine, I end up either doing it from terminal or sometime from the archive manager21:17
bin_bashcoz_: I can't run the livecd and I can't isntall21:18
bin_bashhardcold:  no21:18
coz_bin_bash, ah ok   mm...you may be able to edit the boot sequence ,,  and add  acpi=off irqpoll   to the kernel stanze it uses... then press enter and let the live cd go from there21:19
bin_bashcoz_:  what would editing the boot sequence do?21:19
coz_bin_bash,  it should boot with specific things enabled or disabled   ,,, or with acpi -force irqpoll or  nacpitimer irqpoll21:20
coz_one of those should work21:20
bin_bashcoz_:  how would I do that21:20
coz_bin_bash,  I can rememer with  crunchbang I would get that error frequently21:20
bin_bashwith archbang and puppy i got /bin/sh: can't access tty: job control turned off21:21
coz_bin_bash,  ah I believe the option on the live cd is just as after you see that keyboard logo at the bottom and you  hit enter to get to the menus21:21
coz_bin_bash,   I cant remember too speicifically since I no nlonger use live cds21:21
bin_bashcoz_:  function keys dont work21:21
coz_oh!21:21
coz_bin_bash,  have you googled       ubuntu t /bin/sh: can't access tty: job control turned off21:22
coz_bin_bash,   some of the solutions may be in a several posts21:22
coz_bin_bash,     http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=42158821:22

Hybridtheoryb4KM0201 if it work fine when booting into demo mode should it install fine22:31
Hybridtheoryb4from a disc that is22:31
KM0201in theory, yes... but the problem is, if you've already to tried to install w/ Wubi, you need to get wubi off of the machine before you start messing w/ trying to partition the drive22:31

KM0201Hybridtheoryb4, if you wait till i get back (i'm gonna be leaving in about 10-15min.)... i'll talk you through partitioning and installing if you need it... its really not hard.22:38
step21hardcold: it's not a problem of the program. it's a problem with mac firmware being very flaky about booting anything else but os x from usb (that then would run in what apple calls 'legacy mode') or bootcamp.22:38
KM0201Hybridtheoryb4, the installer will set up and format the partition.22:38

rippscyberkilla: if you want the latest nvidia drivers as they are released, just add the ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates and your system will install them when you update. Right now, Natty is using the latest version of the proprietary drivers23:22

Hybridtheoryb4would i beable to paste in in the libre office program or something like that23:28
bin_bashhmmm didn't think of that23:28
Hybridtheoryb4here is what i can tell you it has three partitions one systems reserve for windows which it sees a systems reserved, one windows partition ntfs which it reads as a ntfs/hfs i think, and then another partition that is ntfs for linux which i want to install linux on23:31
Hybridtheoryb4when i go into the installer it list my drive as under something like /sdva or other then within it my whole drive as free23:32
Hybridtheoryb4?23:46
Hybridtheoryb4anyone know why the installer might not recognize windows install partition23:49
bullgard4Hybridtheoryb4: Probably because this partition is not formatted according to the rules.23:51
