asterismoi have a question04:22
bioterror!ask | asterismo04:22
ubot2asterismo: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-)04:22
asterismothanks bioterror04:22
asterismo!thanks04:22
ubot2You're welcome! But keep in mind I'm just a bot ;-)04:22
asterismohaha04:23
asterismothe thing is that i have a P4 2.8 GHz (HT) with 512 MB in a Gigabyte GA-IPE1000 PRO-G mobo and recently i bought a new Samsung 500 GB SATAII HDD (the mobo is SATAI but it recognizes as well)04:24
asterismoand the system is near unusable with outstanding iowait and HDD usage...04:25
asterismoi googled about storage schedulers, the 200 line patch that does wonders, and the alternative script posted in webupd8.. but the situation does not change04:26
asterismoi booted up with the ESTOOL samsung HDD disgnostic tool and the disk is fantastic, SMART data, and stuff... the system is a double boot with windows XP and it runs very well in it...04:27
asterismoso i guess that it is may be a bad driver or disk controller... right? ubuntu just cannot be that slow, the mouse stops moving for fraction of seconds when coping files or loading evolution, firefox, stuff like that04:29
asterismoany ideas? any bugs i should now?04:29
=== deucex is now known as deuce
asterismoi installed iotop and when it is unusable it shows very high IO operations.... like 6 or 7 procesess with IOs from 99% to 25%04:31
asterismois that normal?04:31
asterismoi mean, its ovbiously a 5-7 year old system, ubuntu should run ok in it04:34
asterismoanyone?04:35
asterismocan anyone help me? or does anyone knows other help channels??04:43
seidosasterismo: i'm pretty sure that isn't "normal", but what processes are doing it?04:49
asterismoi trend to think like there is a trigger process that start the whole iowait going up04:50
asterismoi usually start firefox, evolution, gnome-terminal and transmission04:50
seidoshow much ram?04:51
asterismoand the mouse motion starts to stop and the HDD light is always on04:51
asterismoi have 512 MB04:51
asterismo1 slot04:51
seidosso firefox, evolution, gnome-terminal, and transmission all have high io access in iotop?04:51
seidosyeah, there really shouldn't be any, except maybe with transmission04:52
seidoswell, maybe firefox if you are watching video04:52
asterismobut transmission does not even verify any download04:52
asterismoforget transmission04:52
asterismosay nautilus, firefox and evolution04:52
seidosare you watching video in firefox?04:52
asterismowhen starting session iotop shows 0s04:52
seidos512MB gets eaten pretty quick on my system04:52
asterismoocassionaly 5 or 10 seg04:53
seidosi'm already using almost the entire 2GB04:53
asterismofor a couple of seconds04:53
seidosasterismo: do free -m04:53
asterismothis is not the system anyway04:53
seidosit may just be using a lot of swap04:54
asterismo40MB of swap used04:54
seidosat least that's my guess04:54
asterismobut is a 7200 RPM 500GB HDD04:54
seidosand is the io access within the 40MB?04:54
asterismoit should be fast enough04:54
asterismodo you mean the kswapd?04:55
asterismoor kswapd004:55
seidosnot sure what kswapd is, i was thinking of swap used04:55
seidosis that a process in iotop?04:55
asterismoit shows some io ocassionally04:55
seidosyeah, i pretty much never see that process04:56
asterismobut when navigating 3 or 4 tabs in firefox, having up evolution and nautilus04:56
seidoslet me look it up04:56
asterismofirefox iotop goes to 99% for several seconds04:56
asterismoeven 1 minute04:56
asterismoalso plugin-container04:57
asterismoit's like something is triggering the high iowait04:57
seidosi think you've tapped my knowledge04:57
asterismomay be the active internet connection?04:57
seidostry a livecd?04:57
seidoswhat version of ubuntu?04:57
asterismoi read and look up the ubuntuone syncdaemon04:57
asterismomaverick04:58
asterismoi38604:58
seidosthat's probably normal for it to go to 99% for several seconds04:58
seidosah, is it a 64bit cpu?04:58
asterismoi also installed the latest lucid kernel04:58
asterismobut it does not support iotop04:58
seidosit shouldn't affect it, but really, if you can use 64bit you probably should04:58
seidoshmmm, that's weird04:59
asterismoP4 2.8 GHz (with HT) its 32 bit CPU04:59
seidosoh, the iotop binary in maverick may not be compatible with the lucid kernel04:59
seidosweird as in curious04:59
seidosoh yeah, you would need to try from a liveusb, to run iotop05:00
asterismoi tried to change the io scheduler from cfq to deadline05:00
asterismobut nothing changed05:00
asterismoi dont know what else to do, and i dont want to install debian05:00
asterismoi have ubuntu one account and stuff05:01
seidosyou lost me at io scheduler05:01
asterismothe only thing that comes up to my mind is installing debian to try05:01
seidosdebian is lighter weight afaik05:02
seidosbut you may lose out on features05:02
asterismoyeah05:02
seidosi made a debian usb stick and it was only 166MB, but i couldn't get wireless up and running yet05:02
seidosasterismo: you could try using a lighter weight WM, but again you'll lose out on features05:03
asterismocan i change the hard drive controller from ubuntu? or fom BIOS? or it cant be changed? may be it is a bad controller05:03
asterismobut it is not related to desktop effects or wheight05:03
seidosi think it's a case of swapping behavior to be honest05:04
asterismothe system is unusable loading or executing basic programs when it should be fine05:04
seidosi'm not entirely sure though, if kswapd does all the io activity or if firefox would do it if you're out of ram05:05
asterismobut it does not05:05
seidosyou're certain of this?05:05
asterismoiotop shows firefox or firefox-bin, plugin-container, nautilus, evolution, ubuntuone-syncdaemon, and other processes05:06
seidosasterismo: pastebin your iotop output so i can take a look05:06
seidossorry, i should've asked for this a long time ago05:06
asterismoi'm not in the system right now, but it's hard to do it because when the iowait is high teh system do not respond and the copy/paste stuff neither works all the time...05:08
asterismoif i would fill up a bug for this... what title should i put in?05:08
seidosyou would have to apply it to a package, perhaps iotop05:09
seidosthen wait for it to get triaged.  where do you notice the performance hit the most?05:10
asterismobut i dont trust ubuntu-bugs anymore, last week i filled up a bug with the steps to making evolution crash when inserting an hyperlink, and some person closed it up 2 days later for lack of feedback, 2 days later!!05:10
asterismothat is like a bad joke05:10
asterismoi'll may be report it under "linux"05:11
seidosermmm, perhaps we could discuss it in #ubuntu-offtopic :)05:11
seidosi have my own problems that i can't fix, but it's really about my inability to code in c ;)05:12
asterismoyeah05:12
asterismoi'm not even a programmer05:12
asterismoi'm an astronomer with computer skills05:13
asterismothat's all05:13
seidosi'm a programmer who is quite low on the totem pole05:13
asterismowell05:13
asterismothanks for your help05:14
seidosmay the source be with you05:14
asterismoi will pastebin somebody next time to help me05:14
seidoscool, if i think of anything else, i'll send you a note, assuming you're lurking05:14
asterismobut i dont feel ok reporting anymore bugs05:14
seidoswell, it helps to document it05:15
seidoswhen you come back, you can just paste the bug05:15
seidoslink that is05:15
asterismocan't to that if someone shut down the bug report 2 days later05:16
seidosasterismo: oh!  you might try syncing up with your loco.  http://loco.ubuntu.com05:16
asterismoanyway05:16
seidosthere may be someone there that may help you out05:16
asterismodo you use evolution?05:16
seidosno, i don't, actually.05:16
seidosyou make a good point, asterismo05:17
asterismosomeone here uses evolution?05:17
seidossimplify the problem05:17
seidosjust use firefox, problem still happens?05:17
seidosbrb05:17
seidosasterismo: i'll try to search the forums to see if others have experienced the problem05:23
seidosasterismo: have you considered trying xubuntu or fluxbuntu?05:26
asterismonot really05:27
seidosall right05:28
asterismogoodbye seidos, and thank you for help05:31
seidosasterismo: good bye05:31
seidosah, i should have pointed him to the swapfaq05:35
seidosjust not fast enough05:35

rayhello11:45
rayI know this is somewhat stupid on my part, but I might as well say what I am wondering about11:46
rayhttps://bugs.launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts/+bug/55050211:46
ubot2Launchpad bug 550502 in policykit-1-gnome ""Drop all elevated privileges" menu doesn't make sense" [Medium,Triaged]11:46
rayThe last thing I used my password on was for updating I think, and that was hours ago11:47
rayI am running Deluge, which I am very sure doesn't require a password but I am still wondering what will happen11:48
raywhat's the worst that could happen though, right?11:48
rayhmm, I tried clicking on it and it did not go away?11:50
duanedesignhello ray11:51
rayhello11:51
rayDrop all elevated privileges with the keys will not go away11:52
rayI should check system monitor I guess11:53
rayIt looks ok otherwise11:54
rayis that suppose to be there?11:54
rayI am confused about that menu item11:55
rayor what ever it is11:55
duanedesignray: whenever you enter your sudo password it keeps the privelages elevated for 15 minutes11:58
rayIt's been hours11:58
duanedesignor whatever you have set in your settings11:58
rayWhere are those settings?, I am sorry and thank you11:58
rayI was about to do more Googling11:59
duanedesignyou would drop elevated privelages if you wanted to change something with sudo and not have your system be 'open' for that default period11:59
duanedesignsay if your son was on the computer and you installed something and wanted to walk away11:59
rayI know, I just read the last persons post in the link I posted just before you told me that12:00
rayAnd I knew that already12:00
raybut it's good to hear it again12:00
raySo I want to drop elevated privileges?12:01
rayBut when I left click it it doesn't go away12:01
rayI know, I am a parrot12:02
rayWouldn't that be under password and encryption keys?, I have never really used that from the menu12:04
duanedesignI know there is a command to drop the privelages12:05
duanedesignlet me see if i can find it...12:05
duanedesignray: sudo -k12:07
duanedesignthat should do the same thing12:07
rayok12:07
rayI was about to post something12:07
rayUnder system applications password and encryption keys, there is an option under view called expiry, what's that?12:08
rayThat did not work, nor did it ask for a password12:09
duanedesignray: that shows the expiration date of a key12:09
rayO, OK12:09
duanedesignray: you ran sudo -k12:09
rayI should try it then I guess12:10
duanedesignnot run a command with sudo12:10
rayyes, sudo -k12:10
duanedesignand see if it asks for your password12:10
rayI will type it instead of pasting it12:10
duanedesignfor ezample: sudo cat /etc/sudoers12:10
rayit doesn't ask for a password12:11
rayyou want me to do sudo cat /etc/sudoers ??12:11
duanedesignwhat do you get from the command:  whoami12:11
rayray12:12
duanedesignray: so if you run this command it does not ask for a password and shows you the sudoers file?12:14
duanedesignsudo -k; sudo cat /etc/sudoers12:14
rayOK, I tried sudo nvidia-settings and it asked for a password12:14
duanedesignok12:14
rayI didn't try sudo cat /etc/sudoers12:14
raywhere you telling me to try that command?12:14
duanedesignno that  is ok12:14
rayOK12:14
raysorry12:15
duanedesignjust an example :)12:15
duanedesignif you wanted to change the default 15 minutes of elevated privelelages that is where you would do it. /etc/sudoers12:15
rayThis is what I had so far:12:16
rayhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/596877/12:16
rayOK, I will check there then12:16
duanedesignhttp://www.webupd8.org/2010/04/how-to-change-sudo-password-time-out-in.html12:17
rayThis is what that file has:12:19
rayhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/596878/12:19
raychecking link12:19
raywow, thank you12:20
raybookmarked12:20
rayhmm, what do you recommend?12:21
rayI am trying to decide, what is it that I do12:21
rayOK12:22
raya question first12:22
raywhen updating will it ask again for the password depending on this option?12:22
raySo you suggest 15 minutes?12:23
rayWill updates ask for a password every 15 minutes?12:23
raySo if I update once and it takes say an hour and I have this set for 15 minutes and I update and type my password in once, will update ask for my password 4 times in that one hour?12:38
rayThat wasn't clear but you get what I am asking I hope12:39
coz_ray,  well if it is running a set of installed packages it should complete that run,, unless it has to stop for some reason and then it will ask again12:39
rayOK12:40
rayso you are saying if the updating is interrupted, one example I know of is a bad connection12:41
raythank you for your answer, I can always change it later, now that I know what to do12:42
raythank you both12:42
coz_ray,  for example... say an application  is being installed,, or  compiled,, and this application has several "sections... a core and plugins,,, first pasword for core,, then second password when the compilation has to install the set of plugins as separate package but the core install took 5 minutes or more12:42
coz_so after 5 minutes,, when it's ready to install the plugins it will ask for the password again,, but,, in most instances,, when updating ,, one password should work for the complete update   and yes  maybe ,, sort of ,, its possible for bad connection  ,,12:43
rayOK, thank you for clearing that up12:43
rayWell, I used to have a bad connection12:44
rayevery time the phone was being used my wireless router would drop out12:44
coz_ray,    on new versions of ubuntu the security passord time has been reduced so it will occur more often,, example  in terminal you do update  ,,, takes a minute,,, then you want to test update again,, probably will ask for password again12:45
rayso I changed the channel my router was using and it doesn't have that problem anymore12:45
coz_ray,  ah I see12:45
rayWell, at least I think that is what fixed my connection problem12:45
rayI am reading what you have written12:46
raySo you mean doing sudo apt-get update twice then I guess12:46
coz_ray,  yes  with a minute or more time between,,12:47
rayright12:47
rayok12:47
coz_ray,   it will ask for password again,,,12:47
raythank you12:47
coz_no problem12:47
raythat really helped me12:47
rayI decided 15 minutes, unless I decide otherwise in the future12:48
rayHave a good day12:48
raythank you both12:48
rayI am going I guess12:48
raybye12:48
