[15:44] hello! lately my proprietary graphics driver (flgrx for ati cards) has been misbehaving. I'm not sure what has happened, but now I've got loads of latency with JACK and my firewire card, it worked fine with the same settings just the other day, and with flgrx on too. now it only works if i disable flgrx. any ideas about how I can troubleshoot this? [15:47] medvind, What kernel have you been using? What version of Ubuntu Studio? [15:59] ailo, Ubuntu studio 10.10 (maverick) and right now it's 2.6.35-28-generic. I tried going back to 2.6.35-27, but that wouldn't even boot when the proprietary graphics driver was enabled [15:59] sorry for the slow answer [16:03] medvind, It's strange that it used to work, and now doesn't [16:03] Don't know really what would cause that [16:03] You could try filing a bug report [16:08] ailo, yeah, the question is, for what package [16:08] ailo, it might be that something that I recently got from an upgrade caused the issue [16:08] ailo, or that the gfx driver was updated perhaps [16:09] medvind, Could be. You can check the logs.. [16:09] ailo, ah, right. which logs should I check? [16:10] medvind, I'm looking around a bit. Not all end up in the same log. How do you usually update? [16:11] from the console, apt-get upgrade [16:12] I can live without my gfx driver for now though [16:12] thanks anyhow [16:12] medvind, Check /var/log/apt/history [16:12] history.log* [16:12] alright, thanks [16:13] medvind, You could grep for the graphics driver package. What is it called? [16:14] medvind, cat /var/log/apt/history.log | grep [16:14] Only, that didn't show the date :P [16:14] fglrx [16:15] medvind, cat /var/log/apt/history.log | grep -n fglrx [16:15] That will give you the line number [16:16] thanks [16:16] Then just use gedit to look for that line, and see when you installed or upgraded it - if it shows up, that is [16:18] yeah, it shows that I installed it yesterday and removed it today.. this particular log goes back to april 8. it must have been something else I installed during that time [16:18] medvind, The kernel could be the reason too, I guess [16:19] i remember that after an upgrade, compositing in compiz was disabled and docky seized to function [16:19] yeaeh [16:19] *yeah [16:19] and then i noticed that fglrx was not installed (any more) [16:19] medvind, Then it failed to add a module for the kernel probably [16:20] If you upgraded the kernel, that is [16:21] i did [16:22] medvind, You could file a bug report about the driver, and see if anyone already did that [16:22] I'll have a look [16:22] thanks [16:23] medvind, In case you haven't filed one before: ubuntu-bug fglrx [16:26] ah, great. I didn't know you could do it like that === zylogz80 is now known as zylogz80|working [16:49] ailo, thanks again! bye === frederickjh is now known as frederickjh_away [23:38] I can't seem to install Ubuntu Studio. When I insert the CD I get to the menu where first I choose the language then I can choose to install ubuntu studio, verify the data, advanced settings etc. I can select any of those options but as soon as I press install ubuntu studio and loads up the installation interface with the first section about choosing my language but it won't let me select anything. What is the problem? [23:39] Superstar: im not sure [23:39] Superstar: might i suggest [23:39] just get the normal vanilla ubuntu [23:39] and install what you need [23:39] !vanilla [23:39] To install Ubuntu Studio on top of a vanilla Ubuntu install, read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudio/Installation [23:40] holstein: will this include the low latency kernel? [23:40] Superstar: no [23:40] but neither will ubuntustudio [23:40] you need to add a PPA [23:40] no big deal :) === frederickjh_away is now known as frederickjh [23:44] holstein: thank you very much [23:44] Superstar: sure [23:45] sorry you are having a hard time [23:45] Superstar: feel free to look in the log if you can get to ti [23:45] it* [23:45] and/or file a bug [23:49] I'm trying to install it on my laptop and I've disconnected the internal keyboard. Is it possible that the installation is not detecting my usb keyboard but only the internal? [23:50] Nonetheless, I'm going to update the to the real time kernel in Ubuntu 10.10, if that succeeds and there's a performance improvement I'll try again [23:53] Superstar: try a normal CD [23:53] run it live [23:53] thats the kind of experience from the hardware we should expect [23:53] during the installation [23:55] There's still a delay using midi keyboards even on my 12 core macpro [23:56] Superstar: what audio interface? [23:56] holstein: Anyway thank you for your time I'm going to reboot and see this new kernel. I'll be back
