pajatopmrGreetings.  I am a recent Kubuntu konvert (sorry) and an IRC newbie.  Have I found a good place to start learning more about Kubuntu?11:39
well_laid_lawnhere's some things to get you started11:45
well_laid_lawn!manual11:45
ubottuThe Ubuntu Manual will help you become familiar with everyday tasks such as surfing the web, listening to music and scanning documents. With an emphasis on easy to follow instructions, it is suitable for all levels of experience. http://ubuntu-manual.org/11:45
well_laid_lawn!wiki11:45
ubottuhttp://wiki.ubuntu.com - Ubuntu development documentation wiki. If you are looking for system help, please refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/community - the Ubuntu community documentation.11:45
pajatopmrThanks.  The first thing I need to master is this IRC thing.  It appears I can send a message now and get a response back.  Eventually, my goal is to help with Kubuntu development for a Macbook Pro laptop.  Natty Narwhal in particular.11:48
topylipajatopmr: if you can send and receive, you got this thing pretty much under control :)11:49
pajatopmrso it would appear11:50
pajatopmrhow does one specify a nickname to address a message to?11:50
pajatopmris that the /msg command?11:50
topylijust say the name11:51
topylito make things easier and reduce typos, you can type something like top and hit TAB, and it will be completed to topyli11:51
pajatopmrtopyli: Like this perhaps?11:51
topyliyes. it's a good habit to get into, so i realize you're talking to me (if the channel is busy), and my client also produces a notification so i don't miss it11:52
pajatopmrtopyli: Very cool.  Thanks.11:53
well_laid_lawn!tab11:53
ubottuYou can use your <tab> key for autocompletion of nicknames in IRC, as well as for completion of filenames and programs on the command line.11:53
topylicheers :)11:53
pajatopmrtopyli: Is the ':' significant when using the /say command?11:54
topylino. also, /say is something different11:54
pajatopmrtopyli: So you see this without me using "/say"?11:55
topyliyes. you don't need any command. /say tells the client to reproduce your input verbatim, for example to escape other commands in the beginning of line11:56
topylialmost never needed11:56
pajatopmrtopyli: I see.11:56
well_laid_lawn!msgthebot11:57
ubottuPlease investigate with me only with "/msg ubottu Bot" or in #ubuntu-bots.  Search for factoids with "/msg ubottu !search factoid".11:57
pajatopmrtopyli: and I use /msg when I want to have a private conversation with a particular user?11:58
topylipajatopmr: yes. /msg sends one private message. /query opens a more permanent window if you plan to have a longer discussion11:59
topyli(a query window is also created if the other person replies to your /msg)12:00
topylihrm. i'm afraid this all sounds more complex when explained than it actually is in use :)12:00
pajatopmrOn the Kubuntu front, is there an IRC "subchannel" where one can interact with other Kubuntu users running on Mac hardware in general and MacBook pro laptops in particular?12:01
pajatopmrOr is this the place to be?12:03
topylinot that i know of, this is it12:03
topylistrictly speaking, this channel is for support. #kubuntu-offtopic is a more social channel that you might want to also join12:04
Tm_Tthere's #ubuntu-powerpc for powerpc based devices, but that's it12:04
pajatopmrHow would one find out, for example, what work is being done to support wireless on a model 8,3 Mac laptop?  (Other than Googling of course)12:05
topylipajatopmr: if there currently is no support or it's buggy, there probably is a bug already reported in launchpad. if not, you can create one12:07
pajatopmrtopyli: Ok cool.  Thanks for your help.12:08

grawcho_hello all ... i case of a network manager crash ... what log file should i look for the crash in ?19:50
grawcho_s/i/in19:51
=== valorie is now known as KDE|valorie
BluesKajgrawcho_, you could try /var/log/Xorg.0.log20:05
grawcho_tnx20:05
BluesKajoops , not the Xorg.0.log20:06
grawcho_yeah found out it should be syslog20:10
grawcho_tnx anyway20:10
BluesKajgrawcho_, /var/log/daemon.log120:10
grawcho_it's empty20:10
BluesKajoh?20:10
BluesKajsorry grawcho_  /var/log/daemon.log.1 less verbose than syslog20:13
grawcho_BluesKaj: managed ... found the apparent crash error \ warning20:14
BluesKajor log..2 or.3.or whateverone applies20:14
BluesKajto the date20:14
BluesKajethernet or wifi grawcho_?20:15
grawcho_wifi20:16
grawcho_BluesKaj: makes a difference ?20:16
BluesKajyup, wifi has probs on kde , unless it atheros or broadcom , most others are iffy20:17
=== KDE|valorie is now known as valorie
James147BluesKaj: broadcom? thats normally the one with problems:p20:19
James147^^ though I havent seen them actually crash network maanger yet20:20
BluesKajJames147, well, they're mostly fixable , the others are let to ndiswrapper or wpa_supplicant to resolve20:21
James147BluesKaj: I think wpa_supplicant is used to connect to wpa encrypted connections no matter the chipset ^^20:22
James147BluesKaj: and ndiswrapper is just used when there are no linux drivers20:23
grawcho_BluesKaj: gotcha ... :(20:23
BluesKajJames147, I managed to get m usb wifi ralink adapter to work with wa_supplicant settings but it was rather slow to conect..wpa is a given nowadays20:23
xxmmaannhi20:24
James147BluesKaj: ralink I think have their own problems :p mine seems to work most of the time but I cnannot get it to create adhoc connections :(20:25
BluesKajJames147, yes I understand he problems, but there are some chips that have no linux drivers whatsoever20:25
James147BluesKaj: though broadcom also have problems...20:25
James147BluesKaj: yeah, though they dont tend to be common20:25
James147BluesKaj: I think broadcom was the last of the most commons ones to actually get native drivers20:25
xxmmaanni have a problem with display resolution .> i installed a new driver >i set the resolution at 1306x758 and after restart is 1024x768 > can you help me please?20:27
James147xxmmaann: which drivers?20:27
xxmmaannnvidia 270.0620:27
James147xxmmaann: run "kdesudo nvidia-settings" set the res you want, then click "save to xorg.conf" or something like that, then hit apply (note: apply only changes it for the current session, you need to save it to make it perminit)20:28
xxmmaannJames147: i tryed this , not work20:29
James147xxmmaann: then you havent follow it correctly ^^ what did yo do exactly?20:29
BluesKajxxmmaann, theres a nvidia gui in kmenu>apps>settings20:30
xxmmaanni started a root terminal >nvidia-settings>save to x conf. file20:30
James147xxmmaann: can you pastebin /etc/X11/xorg.conf then?20:31
xxmmaannok20:31
* James147 ntoes that you shouldnt use a root terminal or sudo to start gui applications as root ^^ but use kdesudo to do it instead20:31
xxmmaannhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/597577/20:32
James147xxmmaann: dual screen?20:34
xxmmaannno20:34
michelhello test20:35
micheli'm testing Quassel IRC...20:36
xxmmaannany ideas ?20:36
slinker1well it seems to work20:36
BluesKajxxmmaann, if you wish to use a gui to change settings , alt+f2, kdesudo nvidia-settings , choose Xserver display configuration, then choose advanced , set your desired resolution there.then , "save to X configuration file "20:37
xxmmaanni think the advanced option is for setting a custom resolution > i want to save it to 1306x768 but after restart is 1204x768[auto] this is my problem20:43
BluesKajxxmmaann, did you try ?20:45
xxmmaannyes20:45
BluesKajodd the res was saved to your Xorg.conf file it shoulf work if your monitor is capable20:47
xxmmaanni ll restart my system and i will be back20:47
xxmmaannok i resolved my problem thanks a lot20:52

aarHi, the "save as" dialog in openoffice 3.2 (kde 4.4.5) is painfully slow. Is there a fix fo this?21:42
KTanneraar: about how long does it take for it to open?21:46
aarfour or five seconds to perform any task -- change directory, type a file name, click on an old file...21:47

aar10% use21:53
KTannerhm21:53
KTannerHave you contected OpenOffice.org about it? It may be a native problem with the program and the 64-bit architecture21:54
KTannerSorry, I have to go. Try emailing OpenOffice.org or posting on their forums. Good luck to you :)21:54
* James147 thinks it more likly to be a problem with kde intergration for openoffice ^^ though he dosnt know how to fix it21:56
aarJames147, yes it seems to be a known bug21:58
