halpbatmananyone home?11:49
halpbatmanI need advice.. I just landed a desktop with Intel core i7 and nvidia GTX 470 6gb ram... and I'm planning on dual booting win7 64 and ubuntu... should I go with 10.04 LTS or 10.10?11:52
AJH101Hi anyone tried the new ESET av for linux yet?12:02
nlsthzn-workhalpbatman: I guess that will depend on your needs... If you are looking for stable |I would go for the LTS... if you are looking for bleeding edge I would wait a week for 11.04...12:02
nlsthzn-workAJH101: no thanks... I don't want to pay for something I don't need :p12:03
=== hajour1 is now known as UndifineD
AJH101i know what you mean - but surely it is a matter of time til someone develops a real threat?12:04
halpbatmannlsthzn-work: I'm having the same convo over at #ubuntu... In your opinion.. do you think I'd get the most out of my system with 10.04 LTS or the new one coming out?12:05
nlsthzn-workhalpbatman: You should get the same out of them IMO... they have the same applications, 10.04 will maybe be a version or two behind... but most probably more stable (or that is the theory)... except if there is a known issue with your hardware and with a specific version then both should serve you well... 10.10 looks a bit better though :D12:07
halpbatmannlsthzn-work: looks as in showy? graphics?12:08
duanedesignif you use Ubuntu One definetly use a newer release12:09
nlsthzn-workhalpbatman: yes... slight tweaks in how it looks... comes default with the Ubuntu font (if memory serves)... little things... still basically the same thing (nothing radical like Unity coming in 11.04... just note that 10.04 will be supported for a longer period (if you don't want to update regularly)12:09
halpbatmannlsthzn-work: yeah I think imma stick to LTS.. I use LTS on all other systems... and I actually don't like unity12:10
halpbatmannlsthzn-work: I think it's annoying12:10

halpbatmannlsthzn-work: thx for your advice btw12:19
nlsthzn-workhalpbatman: np... more opinion than advice I guess... the nice thing is, you can try the one... and if there are any issues you can try the other :) it will cost you the time to do it... :)12:20
halpbatmannlsthzn-work: quick q. so I'm downloading 64bit version of LTS cause I have i7 on this other rig.. but the download file says ubuntu 10.04.... amd6412:22
halpbatmannlsthzn-work: is that still cool or should I look for intel64 or x86-6412:22
nlsthzn-workhalpbatman: that is fine... it is the one you are looking for :)12:23
halpbatmannlsthzn-work: i guess they get first dibs on names for inventing 64bit processing12:24
nlsthzn-workhalpbatman: well... I wouldn't say they "invented" it...12:24
nlsthzn-work:p12:24
halpbatmannlsthzn-work: didn't amd come out with the first 64bit processor?12:24
halpbatmannlsthzn-work: I guest first commercial product and inventing is not the same.12:25
halpbatmannlsthzn-work: guess*12:25

raubvogelAny reason why I would not be able to upgrade virtualbox on 10.10 to 4?20:19
holsteinraubvogel: if its not in the repos?20:20
holsteinyou planning on using a PPA?20:20
raubvogelyeah. I followed instructions in http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads20:20
raubvogelWhich have worked for previous releases20:20
raubvogelBut I am stuck on 3.220:21
holsteindid you install both verions?20:21
raubvogelI cannot install 420:22
holsteinraubvogel: both the open and propritary ones20:22
holsteini am proposing you have 3.2 of one and 4 of the other20:22
raubvogelOh20:22
raubvogelRight now I only have the proprietary 3.220:22
holsteinmaybe not though20:22
holsteinraubvogel: i would try re-downloading20:23
holsteinand reinstalling from the proper .deb20:23
holsteinthen, who knows20:23
holsteinshould just work*20:23
raubvogelAccording to synaptic, I only have the proprietary 3.220:23
holsteinraubvogel: you could try uninstalling20:24
holsteinand re-do it20:24
raubvogelIf you follow the instructions in the link I  mentioned, it should work fine with apt-get/synaptic/etc20:24
raubvogelI am considering doing the uninstall route20:24
raubvogelJust annoyed I have to20:24
holsteinhttp://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads20:24
holsteinfrom there20:24
holsteinyou could add the PPA20:25
raubvogel(03:20:49 PM) raubvogel: yeah. I followed instructions in http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads20:25
holsteinright20:25
holsteinthat link has PPA instructions too20:25
holsteini was just clarifying20:25
raubvogelAha20:25
holsteinif you add the PPA20:25
raubvogelThis is my post on VB forum: http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=4094920:25
holsteinyou should be able to just upgrade20:26
holsteinand get the latest version20:26
raubvogelPPA being the key?20:26
holsteinthe key is different20:26
holsteinyou add a line to the PPA20:26
* holstein looking20:26
raubvogelI added "deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian maverick contrib non-free" to /etc/apt/sources.list20:27
raubvogelSince I am running 10.1020:27
raubvogelI guess I am still confused about what PPA is20:27
holsteinyeah, that info looks reight20:27
holsteinwell, its just an added repository20:28
raubvogelOk20:28
holsteinan extra resource for your system to use20:28
holsteinapt or synaptic or the software center20:28
holsteinwhatever20:28
holsteinhowever you get software and updates20:28
raubvogelWhat is the diff between that and /etc/apt/sources.list?20:28
holsteina PPA is a way to add newer pacakges20:28
holsteinor different ones20:28
holsteinraubvogel: that file has a list of your sources20:29
holsteinthe sources apt or whatever uses20:29
holsteinthere are some there by default20:29
holsteinand you can add others20:29
holsteintheres a PPA for firefox for example20:29
raubvogelWhere is this file?20:31
holsteinthe sources file?20:31
raubvogelPPA20:31
holstein /etc/atp20:31
holstein /etc/apt*20:31
holsteinraubvogel: there are other ways to add it20:31
holsteinyou can do it from synaptic20:31
holsteintheres also ubuntutweak20:31
holsteinall kinds of little extras tweak can do20:32
holsteinadding PPA's easily is one of those things20:32
raubvogelFound my problem20:33
charlie-tcaubuntutweak is not recommended20:33
charlie-tca!ubuntutweak20:33
ubot2Ubuntu Tweak is a tool that automates some things; however, it is potentially dangerous an informal review of its code is pending and most of the things it does can be done by the use of other tools. Please don't ask for or provide support for it in #ubuntu.20:33
raubvogelI had in source.list deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian maverick non-free20:33
raubvogelinstead of deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian maverick contrib non-free20:33
raubvogel(note the contrib)20:33
holsteincharlie-tca: so how do you feel about tweak ;)20:34
holsteini read all that, and then i tried it20:34
charlie-tcaI have never used it20:34
holsteinand actually its not bad20:34
holsteinbut, i can see the concern20:34
charlie-tcabut if it will not be supported in #ubuntu, it should not be recommended here either20:34
holsteinand encourage others to read about it before installing20:34
holsteinraubvogel: you get it sorted?20:40
raubvogelyep20:40
raubvogelHad missed "contrib"20:40
holsteingood for you20:41
holsteinupdates should just come in20:41
raubvogelAgreed20:42
kristian-aalborgquick, some nice small games ;)23:17
MrChrisDruifkristian-aalborg: maybe better in -offtopic?23:17
kristian-aalborgMrChrisDruif: but... there's no such thing?23:19
MrChrisDruifkristian-aalborg: I meant -team :P23:20
kristian-aalborgah, yes... see ya there23:20
