coz_ah ok and which video card is onboard>?00:05
phibxrnvisioncg, please define 'lagging'. :) are you using appropriate lighting?00:06
nvisioncgI can get the camera working but its lagging, low framerate, even in lighted conditions00:06
coz_nvisioncg,    in terminal      lspci | grep -i vga00:06
phibxrnvisioncg, I only get a reasonable framerate in full daylight, no matter if I run windows with the official drivers or linux. but if you get a bad framerate in full daylight, it sounds like there may be something wrong indeed.00:07
nvisioncgINtel GMA HD00:07
coz_nvisioncg,  that is the readout of that command???00:07
coz_full readout00:07

nvisioncgit looks like the specific integrated graphics is GMA X4500MHD00:12
Rods_TigerSince I upgraded to natty, minidlna has ceased to function correctly. I see the appropriate folders from my WDTV Live, as before, but it complains there's no media now. Nothing had changed in my minidlna setup, which worked before the natty upgrade.00:12
yofelIan_Corne: nope, just wanted to try it since it's an almost complete rewrite of the app, takes a bit getting used to but shows much more details than before00:13
coz_nvisioncg,  I am not finding any specific issues with that revision   ...00:14
coz_nvisioncg,   however you may want to look here   http://intellinuxgraphics.org/documentation.html   and see if any issues or fixes or tests can be performed00:14
nvisioncgUVC should work with the webcam.  It's  Chicony webcam00:15

nvisioncghas anyone seen issues with the chicony webcam lagging?   I know system76 uses their driver to make changes to get the webcam working on their Ultrathin Lemur (sager np3101).  Anybody have any idea?00:36

rexbron_hi, would someone be able to help me with a dmraid question/problem?01:07
phibxr!ask | rexbron_01:07
ubotturexbron_: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-)01:07
rexbron_fair enough01:08
rexbron_dmraid sees but won't activate a raid0 fakeraid set. This is immediately post upgrade01:08
phibxrrexbron_, never used raid-setups myself, sadly. for me, raids are something you participate in to bring bosses down, but hopefully someone who can help you is awake. :P01:09

hypetechDoes gwibber in natty use SSL for the chat protocols?01:22
Bing0Hi.  Will installing Gnome 3 be difficult on the released Natty?  Thanks.01:25
arand!gnome301:25
ubottuGnome 3 is not currently supported on Ubuntu. A PPA is available at https://launchpad.net/~gnome3-team/+archive/gnome3 but these packages are _experimental_, _unstable_ and may break your system.01:25
arandAnd that is likely how it will remain01:26
Bing0ok thanks01:31
Bing0I will give natty a chance, but if after two weeks i don't like it i gota make a decision..01:31
hypetechBing0: unity is essentially gnome3 from what I can tell anyway01:32
hypetechBing0: feature wise01:32
arandI would disagree.01:32
Rods_TigerSince I upgraded to natty, minidlna has ceased to function correctly. I see the appropriate folders from my WDTV Live, as before, but it complains there's no media now. Nothing had changed in my minidlna setup, which worked before the natty upgrade.01:33
Bing0hypetech, ya i wouldn't go that far. :)  at least from the videos ive seen of Gnome 3 on youtube01:34

hanasakiwhy is openoffice draw and math no longer supported in 11.04?03:29
freaky[t]is there any program with which i can read ext4 (ubuntu+1) partitions from within win7?03:32
hanasakifreaky[t]:  there was a ext2? 3? driver I once saw .. for NT03:33
lugkhasthanasaki: Natty has LibreOffice03:33
hanasakilugkhast:  what's that?03:33
hanasakilugkhast:  so open office is dead to ubuntu?03:33

lugkhasthanasaki: LibreOffice is pretty much the same as OpenOffice in terms of looks/usage03:41
hanasakilugkhast:  yes.. I am reading ... so ubuntu pulled out openoffice even as an option?03:42
fa21its the same tem that develope libre and oo, and libre is actually better and more stable and use less of resources03:42
traskersAfter a fresh install off 11.04, I'm missing my Dash launcher icon in the top-left (the Ubuntu icon directly above the Unity launcher), can anyone tell me how to get that icon there?03:43
hanasakifa21:  nice sales line :)   the format is the same though .. file format03:43
lugkhasthanasaki: I've just googled, that looks like the situation03:43
luckysmackfrom what i understood, they pulled libre out of the cd install disc because of physical disc space restraints. it gets larger on every release. if you get the dvd version its on there03:43
ecinxii've accidently bricked my system. I hit alt f2 update-manager -d. when it was installing it said 12 minutes remaining for various hours03:43

fa21hanasaki, actually I dont use any office softwares. putty is my way03:43
hanasakiso is gnome gone from 11.04 and now its unity?03:43
rww!unity03:44
ubottuUnity is a shell for GNOME, but it is not GNOME-shell. See http://unity.ubuntu.com and http://www.jonobacon.org/2010/10/31/unity-some-further-clarification-points/ for more information. Have a question, check http://askubuntu.com/questions/tagged/unity03:44
hanasakifa21:  I have folks that send me ms-o docs :|03:44
ImperialXThanasaki:  yes essentially03:44
hanasakithanks rww03:44
lugkhasthanasaki: Unity still feels very GNOME-ish03:44
traskershanasaki, Unity is the default, but the classic Gnome interface is still available.03:44
lugkhast(to me at least)03:44
rwwno, not essentially. The underlying system and applications are GNOME, just the panels got replaced with Unity03:44
rwwjust like we've been replacing Epiphany with Firefox for forever ;P03:44
fa21hanasaki, its the same team, oracle will probably drop the development and the programmers made the 'fork' libre is oo03:45
hanasakitraskers:  so will an upgrade still be classic? or will it switch to the default unity?03:45
hanasakifa21:  hmmm mysql forked too?03:45
fa21mariadb03:45
rwwUbuntu was already using the patches that became LibreOffice anyway, so it made a lot of sense for us to switch to it ;P03:45
traskershanasaki, it has both installed, but by default it will log you into the Unity (called "Ubuntu" at the login screen) by default, but you can switch that at any time by choosing "Classic" from the login screen (I believe it's called Classic..)03:46
hanasakinice! w/o a logout/login?03:46
hanasakihow do unity / classic and kde compare for speed and ram usage?03:46
traskershanasaki, technically, I think you could, but it's much easier to logout/login under the other environment :P03:47
hanasakistill uses gdm?03:47
traskersYuss.03:47
lugkhastyup03:47
hanasakiug.. can you theme it?  all that died a few versions ago...03:47
lugkhastyup03:48
hanasakixmdp work again?03:48
Sylphidecinxi: im assuming your running from a live cd, if so try a grub reinstall  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Reinstalling%20from%20LiveCD03:49
hanasakiis there an easy way to bring up a login window for 11.04?  like vnc but to login / not to connect to an existing login03:49
Sylphidhanasaki: XDMCP03:51
hanasakiSylphid:  yes.  that ;)03:51
ecinxiSylphid, I don't think it's a live cd. I think i installed originally from a USB stick but that was moths ago and I don't remember.03:51
ejvdoes that power regression article on phoronix have any accuracy? if so, anyone know if it's being worked on for the upcoming release? :)03:51
Auzyg'day.. Just wondering how stable unity is currently?03:51
hanasakiSylphid:  it hasn't worked in gdm for at least 2 versions... and I need it encrypted03:51
hanasakilike rdp03:51
SylphidX11 forwarding03:52
ecinxiSylphid, I probably don't know the exact definition of live cd anyways, so maybe it is. and I think grub is broken since i can't boot in windows either03:52
Sylphidecinxi: if your not booting from the hard drive then any live linux image should be sufficient03:52
hanasakiSylphid:  yes.. however that works with an existing session.. and my folks don't do comand lines lol :(03:53
Sylphidxming03:53
hanasakihmm yes.. but xming does not do the ssh port forwarding .. does it?03:53
hanasakidoes unity 3D compiz run ok over vnc?03:54
Sylphidhmmm..... not sure03:54
hanasakibeen lots of issues posted on the current gnome about that03:54
hanasakiso is unity a ubuntu only thing?03:54
hanasakiis there a good comparison between gnome,unity,kde?03:55
ecinxiSylphid, I'm probably not understanding. I do boot from my hard drive, but it broke last week when i try to update. So what i need to do is download a linux ISO put it on a USB and boot from that and click install grub?03:55
trismhanasaki: it runs alright with x11vnc and -noxdamage but sometimes the windows don't appear until you click them03:56
hanasakiah03:56
hanasakiand unity is lgpl?03:56
hanasakijust thinking about not getting ubuntu lockin with unity... is that the case?03:57
rwwhanasaki: Unity is dual-licensed under GPL3 and LGPL3, I believe03:58
ecinxihanasaki,  I may be wrong but unity ma have been developed by canonical, same company that made ubuntu03:58
rwwUnity is owned by Canonical, yes.03:58
Sylphidecinxi: are talking from the broken computer? If so what did you boot from?03:58
ecinxino, I'm on a different laptop, Sylphid03:58
hanasakiecinxi:  yes... thus I want to be sure I can use it ok in debian or fedora or mint03:58
rwwYou can, if they package it. I don't know if they plan to.03:59
ecinxii doubt it too03:59
Sylphidecinxi: ok so the usb drive you have does not currently have a live image on it correct?04:00
ecinxino, maybe04:01
ecinxiLet me look for a USB stick04:01
itaylor57upgraded in about an hour, not too bad04:07
ecinxiSylphid, I found a USB stick with some version of ubuntu in it04:14
ecinxiit says on the readme natty narwhal, so it's not theversion I originally installed on that computer, since I think the OS was kubuntu 1.1004:15
ecinxi10.10*04:15
Sylphidecinxi: that should work, pop it in and boot from it then do the grub reinstall04:18
hanasakidon't see it... is gnome3 in 11.04 or not04:23

bitplanejust updated today... got some things to report but don't know if they've already been raised, so I'll just dump them here for now:05:32
bitplane1) ATI driver issues appear to be resolved, I can use Unity now :) .... I have 3 monitors, the sidebar is on my rightmost monitor. I'm guessing that's not intended.05:33
bitplanepressing printscreen doesn't give me any option to save a screenshot of this05:34
bitplaneright clicking on this bar thing doesn't do anything, which sucks. I was expecting something to pop up and at least tell me what it's called05:35
bitplane2) changing settings in ccsm scrambles the render target for the entire menu bar until I log in again05:35
bitplane3) another compiz issue: when I enable desktop cube CSSM complains that unity plugin requires large desktop, but cube also provides this05:37
bitplaneso it asks me to disable it, which is unnecessary05:37
bitplanecube deformation appears to be missing all of its settings, and there are compiz/fusion textures on the top and bottom of my desktop cube, pretty sure I disabled those but can't find a place to disable them again05:39
bitplaneproblem could be between keyboard and chair05:39
bitplaneworkspace switcher taskbar thing doesn't have any way to change the number of workspaces, which sucks05:40
bitplanewhen clicking the drop down top menu thing my volume buttons don't work05:41
bitplanepretty sure in Gnome it used to show me some current volume overlay when I changed the volume on the keyboard05:41
ecinxiSylphid, I don't know what I did wrong.05:43
ecinxiI did sudo fdisk -l , sudo mount /dev/sda5 /mnt,  sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda05:44
ecinxi1 sec, i skipped a step sudo update-grub05:44
bitplanefinally, when I maximize a window on the monitor with the sidebarthing, it dodges out of the way when I try to access it, I have to restore the window to be able to touch it05:44
hanasakihow do you get the appearance / effects back in gnome classic for 11.04?05:46

hanasakihmm wobbly windows are better before 11.0405:52
bitplaneyeah the framerate seems bad05:52

ecinximicrosoft has great software05:56
ecinxiall the office apps05:56
hanasakiare both : dhcp3-client  AND isc-dhcp-client needed?05:56
bitplaneyeah they make some okay stuff I guess05:56
ecinxibut thank libreoffice for great competition05:56
bitplaneI don't like this new ribbon thing they've made in the latest office05:57
ecinxii use libre, withthe exception of onenote05:57
bitplaneI used to be able to use MS Office, now it seems all the options I need are hidden so deep in the ribbon that it would be quicker to use libre office05:57
ecinxibitplane, it only works if you use word, excel or w/e day in and day out05:57
ecinxiand it's better than the old menus05:58
bitplanehow?05:58
jbichahanasaki: no, isc-dhcp-client replaces dhcp3-client05:58
hanasakihm the upgrade did not get rid of dhcp3-client05:58
ecinxionly if you use it day in and day out. like in one note i can get what i need quick because the pictures. in the ribbon. but when you use word or what not casually it doesn't work05:58
bitplanethe idea of a menu system is to have all your options somewhere you can find them. changing where they are like that kills productivity05:59
ecinxithey need to keep both systems and have the user choose05:59
ecinxiare you a vim user?05:59
bitplaneno, I used to use vi though many years ago06:00
ecinxithink of the ribbon system as VIm. improves productivity when you are used to it06:00
ecinxifor the mass it doesnt work06:00
ecinxifor secretaries with proper training it works.06:01
bitplaneseems to me like they've throwing away their main advantage, that people know how to use their software because they have used it for years06:01
ecinxialso for apps like vizio when you are dealing with pictures a lot06:01
ecinxibitplane,  i agree06:01
bitplanesecretaries with proper training can use an Amstrad WPC-90 with green screen and write letters efficiently06:02
ecinxibut it's not like before either.. where office was $300 plus dollars06:02
ecinxistudents can get it from $15 -50 bucks06:02
ecinxiand anyone else for $9906:02
ecinxi<< didn't pay $15 because I use free office06:03

ecinxiand google docs doesnt supprot it :(06:04

freaky[t]hi all, i got a question. I did apt-get install kubuntu-desktop and now the boot splash and grub background is blue and it says booting kubuntu but i want it back to ubuntu how do i do that?07:34
jamil_1Hello, I am having trouble with mouse. Mouse doesn't perform the context action specific to application. For example in nautilus dragging mouse moves the entire windows rather than selecting items07:43
Jordan_Ujamil_1: Is your alt key broken? (That's what should happen if alt is being held down).07:46
perscitusUbuntu 11.04 just more buggy in the last couple days07:48
jamil_1yeah with alt it seems to work07:49
Jordan_Ujamil_1: What do you mean by that exactly?07:50
jamil_1with alt context menu, and in-application buttons etc start to work normally07:50
Jordan_Ujamil_1: With alt held down?07:51
jamil_1yes07:51
jamil_1srry I didnt explain well07:51
Jordan_UThat's odd. And it stops working when you stop holding alt?07:52
jamil_1yp07:52
jamil_1Jordan_U: earlier on this forum I was suggested to tweak settings in compiz07:52
jamil_1Jordan_U: but there are too many options.07:53
Jordan_UThere should be no possible compiz setting that would have this effect.07:53
jamil_1Jordan_U: also playing with few options resulted in crashing of unity itself07:53
Jordan_UThat seems to be unfortunately common :(07:54
perscitusboth gnome3 and unity both lack some serious customization07:55
sveinseWhy should I use unity? (over classic)?07:56
sveinseOK, you've got dash07:56
jamil_1actually this is a good question....07:56
sveinseI'm back at classic because workspace navigation is just too cumbersome with unity07:57
sveinseWhen you have 8 workspaces like I do with a handful of apps in each, the launcher becomes _very_ cluttered07:57
kyubutsuand thus, you've answered your own question07:57
kyubutsui like unity07:58
perscitussveinse, Cuz classic is gone in 11.1007:58
sveinsebut my question where what other features does unity have except dash and the launcher (and the global menu thing)?07:58
perscitusnothing07:59
kyubutsuwhy does it matter, you just stated you do not like unity..07:59
=== cryptk|offline is now known as cryptk
sveinseI welcome unity. But it's not quite what I need in respect of workflow08:00
sveinseIn fact I assume that the workspace switching will be fixed by 11.10 because all other heavy workspace users can't cope with the way it is implemented today08:02
sveinseEven Mark Shuttleworth stated that the launcher should not display all open apps from all workspaces, yet it does08:02
sveinseSo: unity, yes please, but I'll come back when it has matured a bit08:03
* Jordan_U always uses alt+tab08:08
topyliwho cares what mark has written in his blog at some time? he can change his mind. the technical board can disagree with him. things may not work out the way he'd like to08:10
Spaz_Dynamicoh man, can't wait for natty to come out. I have a computer waiting for it. it's all partitioned and ready to go....08:17
rach0is there any way to make emerald decorators work in natty? and will emerald be supported at all in 11.04?08:20
sveinsetopyli: Do you say that it is intended to show all open apps from all workspaces on the launcher? seriously? If that is the case, then it proves my point that ubuntu is moving away from the concepts of workspaces...08:30
topylisveinse: no idea whether it's intended or an accident. the old window list applet shows windows from the current workspace by default, with all workspaces as an option (which i used)08:31
topyliso yes, it would be a change in defaults08:31
sveinsewe'll see eventually08:32
topylias for moving away from workspaces, i'm all for it :)08:32
topyli(as a default anyway. EVERY newbie i have introduced to ubuntu has been utterly confused about them)08:33
kyubutsuit is safe to say casual home users dont actually have need of multiple desktops08:34
Spaz_Dynamicwhen I found ubuntu (from windows, and mac years before that) and discovered the workspaces, I was amazed and fell in love with them very quickly08:34
topyliwell me too, and i quickly even implemented them on windows when i was still occasionally using it08:35
sveinseI could not disagree more. Workspaces is what separates win from linux. When I am at my most active I use 8 workspaces with like 5-10 apps per workspace, so I _need_ it.08:35
topylihaven't used them in years now though08:35
Spaz_Dynamicwindows can have workspaces?08:35
topylisure, there are little freeware utilities to do it08:36
Spaz_Dynamicoh, that way08:36
topylivirtuawin for example, which is free software to boot :)08:36
sveinseI think I've seen a workspace-ish hack somewhere for win, but I've never used it08:36
Spaz_DynamicI like being able to do things natively, not with random programs08:36
Spaz_Dynamicthough there are some utilities on windows that I love that are from odd ends of the interwebz08:37
FeldegastSpaz_Dynamic there is a powertoy to do it iirc08:37
kyubutsuam fine with only 2 workspaces yet unity gives me 4.  the horror08:37
Spaz_Dynamichaha, you can change it08:38
kyubutsubut hey, unlike alot of folk out there, i adapt to the system. if i found natty/unity difficult to work with, i be using something else...08:39
Spaz_Dynamicyea. I have a question. does gnome get fixed in natty? It had several miscellaneous graphical errors for me08:40
Spaz_Dynamicand they weren't always there either08:40
Spaz_Dynamicone boot they would be, one they wouldn't,08:41
Feldegasthow do i make keyboard selections persistant across reboots? having to fix my keyboard each time is getting old quickly08:41
Spaz_Dynamicsuch as a white block next to the show desktop button08:41
Spaz_Dynamicor the icons in the top right pannel getting all kinds of quirky08:42
Spaz_Dynamicactually, it's approaching 4 am08:43
Spaz_Dynamici'm going to go xD08:43
kyubutsuyou should run a comparison between 7.10 and 11.04..08:43
kyubutsuwell.. effects work fine on the open source ati driver.. but not so with 3d rendering08:45
kyubutsu[i used secondlife to test]08:45
kyubutsukind of expected that anyway..08:47

d1gitalI just upgraded from Hardy to Natty (clean install) and I'm pretty convinced that was a mistake. Complaints aside, my major issue is with the NVIDIA graphics driver. I managed to make the GRUB menu visible by tweaking /etc/defaults/grub, but now I am getting screen corruption when I switch back to X from a VT. Window contents are drawn white until I resize the window.15:16

d1gitalso, any ideas?  I have a Gentoo-based liveCD that works perfectly as far as graphics.  VTs and X operate in max resolution, no problem.  I'm impressed, especially since it's a live CD.  what confuses me is, if Gentoo can do it out-of-the-box, why couldn't Ubuntu?  I've always favored Ubuntu for its hardware support, but graphics seems to be a major exception.15:26
alvind1gital: Gentoo doesn't use plymouth. Try uncommenting splash and quiet in /etc/default/grub and do update-grub15:29
BluesKajHey folks15:31
d1gitalalvin, how much does plymouth really affect the system after it's up and running, though? (I'm not very familiar with it, as I was running Hardy until this week.)15:33
d1gitalI might just roll back to 10.0415:34
patdk-wkplymouth exists in 10.04 also15:36
d1gitalI'm still not sure plymouth is the source of my problems, but I guess I won't know until I try it.15:38
alvind1gital: Plymouth interacts with upstart, which mangles the boot process. That is not your problem, but plymouth also creates the splash screen that hides useful information from the user and uses stuff like KMS. So, that can be related when switching between X and virtual terminals.15:40

ikonia17:42 < eagles0513875> cuz i already tried removing .kde folder in my home folder17:44

arandmehdi: Then you won't be able to use Unity anymore, disabling the gnome3 PPA will make no difference..17:46

bitplanethe bar thing doesn't leave the screen, it moves up a bit if it will go off the screen19:23
bitplanebut "behind a panel" should == "off the screen"19:23

ubottuUbuntu bug 757652 in unity-2d "[panel] The main panel is not on the leftmost monitor in a dual-head setup" [High,In progress]19:56
bitplanethough it applies to unity 3d too19:56
voozeWould it be possible to just go beta2 now, and then upgrade when final is out?? or do i need to reinstall when final comes?19:57
dajhornvooze: Yes, you can upgrade now and get the final release without reinstalling.19:59
voozedajhorn,  okay, but am i correct i need to reinstall to go 11.04 beta2? from 10.1020:01
dajhornvooze: No, you can upgrade from 10.10 to 10.04 without reinstalling.20:01
dajhornvooze: Typo:  to 11.04 Natty20:02
BluesKajvooze, , no , open a terminal : sudo do-release-upgrade -d20:02
voozeokay, i just read that 11.04 have so many changes it would be best to reinstall20:03
voozeso just the command the follow what it says?20:05
bitplanevooze: I'd be weary of installing it at the moment unless you don't mind testing bugs20:05
bitplanethere are quite a few irritations20:06
voozeThink i will survive :)20:06
voozeguess i20:06
voozeguess i'll learn from it anyway :D20:06
bitplaneis it possible to have two sessions running at once under the same user? so I can switch between gdm and Unity when testing?20:07
bitplaneanother dumb question... what's the bar at the top of the screen called in Unity?20:12
voozebitplane, do you use unity? alot of my friends dont like it20:15
bitplanetesting it out, seems okay though a bit immature20:16
bitplanetotally screwed up my sound somehow20:18
bitplaneIf I choose surround sound 5.x and click test, the sound preferences program crashes20:18
bitplanesince this happened the first time I can't play audio20:19
bitplaneanyone know what that program's called so I can run it through gdb?20:19
dajhornbitplane: You can start a second X11 instance by doing something like `startx -- :8` at a console prompt.20:19
bitplanedajhorn, then I just attach to it at the login screen?20:20
dajhornbitplane: Dunno.  What do you mean by attach it?20:20
dajhornbitplane: Pushing CTRL+ALT+F1 will take you to the first virtual console.   The default X11 session runs on CTRL+ALT+F7.   You can run secondary X11 sessions on unused VTs.20:22
bitplaneah okay thanks20:22
bitplanehmm starting and then killing x has brought my sound back again20:24
bitplanethis is odd20:24
bitplaneI shouldn't be able to hear music at a virtual console before I've logged in should I?20:27
Ian_Cornedefine music?20:28

bitplaneit crashed, not had music since20:34
bitplanebut the test speakers thing worked in stereo mode, but crashes in surround sound mode20:34
bitplaneso I started a second x session on console 120:34

ybitwhen are we seeing gnome 3 for ubuntu?20:51
rwwybit: It's planned for 11.10, I believe. There's an unsupported PPA for 11.04 also.20:51
IgashuI believe you can already grab it from the PPA20:51
Igashujust doesn't come on the cd20:52

maxoBluesKaj, update-manager -d21:00
BluesKajmaxo, disable any ppas in the packagemanager or sources.list21:01
MK``then Ubuntu can be Unity-buntu :D21:02

maxoBluesKaj, hmmm my sources.list file only seems to have natty stuff in it now. But if I click install on the update-manager, it says the problem is with libpango1.0-0 and plymouth, so I've run apt-get upgrade libpango1.0-0 plymouth and now it seems to be doing something21:05

gordonjcptbf: I'm not totally sold on the aubergine-and-septicaemia colour scheme23:03
gordonjcpI wouldn't call it a bug23:03
gordonjcpI just don't like it very much23:03
JamesJRHasdffd: Well then, you pretty much answer your own question. Go for Maverick.23:04
tbfgordonjcp: the icons vs. your eyes issue? surely an UX or accessibility bug23:04
gordonjcptbf: well, yeah, kind of23:04
asdffdjames23:04
asdffdnatty has also  gnome23:04
gordonjcptbf: but, it means that Unity is fundamentally incompatible with my brain23:04
gordonjcptbf: the only real fix is to make it look and work like Gnome 223:04
JamesJRHasdffd: Yes but it's not out yet.23:04
tbfgordonjcp: still the guys behind unity are motivated23:04
gordonjcpand I don't see Canonical going for that23:04
gordonjcptbf: <shrug>23:05
tbfgordonjcp: maybe you can work out something great with them, if you constructively describe your problem23:05
gordonjcptbf: I'll just use Xubuntu or something instead, it's fine23:05
tbfgordonjcp: nah, giving up is lame.23:05
gordonjcptbf: I don't use Ubuntu 99% of the time anyway23:05
tbfok.23:05
gordonjcpI only really boot into Ubuntu to check that stuff builds in Ubuntu23:06
gordonjcpat some point I'll probably need to spend a bit more time sorting out a PPA, but right now I just don't have any time23:06
asdffdunity shit23:06
tbfgordonjcp: fair enough23:07
tbfgordonjcp: guess you should try that opensuse build bots23:07
gordonjcptbf: ah, yeah, well that's a whole 'nother can of worms23:07
tbfgordonjcp: https://build.opensuse.org/23:08
gordonjcptbf: they don't appear to have jack development packages for Ubuntu, which means that lysdr won't build on them23:08
tbfgordonjcp: never really played with it, but it seems to build for many distros23:08
=== Lorthirk is now known as Lorthirk`ZNC
asdffdunity shit23:09
tbfgordonjcp: using build bots on my day job i know they are live changing time savers23:09
gordonjcptbf: yeah, one of my friends has actually set up buildscripts for lysdr23:09
gordonjcptbf: but it won't build Ubuntu packages, because jack isn't in the normal repositories23:09
gordonjcpor something23:09
tbfgordonjcp: tag, push, coffee, mail - oh, my code really integrates into into the current image23:10
gordonjcpso I need to figure out how to fix that23:10
tbfgordonjcp: hopefully obs works similarly convenient23:11
JamesJRHWhy are so many people complaining about Unity! If you don't like it, use standard Gnome 3! You have that choice. I'm glad Canonical have given me a new choice that I really like, and I'm grateful for it.23:11
tbfJamesJRH: guess they just don't have used plain gnome3 yet :-D23:11
JamesJRHasdffd: What was the point in saying that?!! TWICE!23:12
KM0201anybody know how to enable control alt backspace, in xfce?23:12
gordonjcpsurely you do that in xorg.conf?23:13
KM0201gordonjcp, thats y thinking, but i have no idea how to do that....23:15
KM0201gordonjcp, previously, i always installed dontzap, and followed a few commands, but dontzap is not in the repos anymore.23:15
trismKM0201: possibly: setxkbmap -option terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp; from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/DontZap since they don't list xfce23:15
trismgordonjcp: the option was removed from xorg in the version that was in karmic23:16
gordonjcptrism: entirely?23:16
asdffdwhen stable23:16
asdffdunity shitt23:17
lcbhm23:17
trismgordonjcp: it was moved from an x server option to an option in xkb23:18
gordonjcpasdffd: is there a reason why you keep typing the same thing over and over?23:18
gordonjcptrism: weird23:18
gordonjcpoh well23:18
KM0201trism, that seems to have done the trick.. thanks... but how do i add it to ~/.xinitrc.. to make it permanent?.. never done that before.23:18
gordonjcpit's not something I've needed often enough to actually miss in about ten years23:18
asdffdno23:18
KM0201i don't even see that file..23:19
gordonjcpI was kind of sad to see CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE go, but I mean really, when was the last time you had to kill a runaway X client *that* brutally?23:19
KM0201trism, any ideas?23:20
trismKM0201: I'm not really sure if .xinitrc will be used when you start xfce, might want to add it to the startup applications, however you do that in xfce23:22
KM0201hmm...23:22
KM0201so just make a file as executable, and then put that command in it, is that correct?23:22
yofelwell, considering you can kill X using sysrq+k anyway, ctrl-alt-backsp. is somewhat unnecessary23:22
KM0201yofel, you can?23:23
yofelalthough that's even more brutal than ctrl-alt-bsp23:23
yofelas sysrq+k kills anything on the current VT, which on TTY7 happens to be X usually23:23
JamesJRHIn FF4, why doesn't ^Q ask me to save and quit?23:24
* yofel wonders if he just tried that out ^^23:24
lcblol, yeap, looks like23:24
lcbwb KM0201, how's SysRq+k working?23:26
KM0201yofel, that worked perfect, thanks23:26
yofel:D23:26
lcblol23:26
KM0201lcb, it actually took me a second, because my sysrq is under prtsc.. and i thought "shift" would activate it.. turns out, its 'ALT'.. go figure..23:26
KM0201so it was a bit of a trial and error process23:27
yofel!sysrq23:27
ubottuIn an emergency, you may be able to shutdown cleanly and reboot by holding down Alt+PrintScreen and typing, in succession, R, E, I, S, U and B. For an explanation, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key23:27
yofelthe wiki has the full list of keys23:27
KM0201ctrl alt backspace rolls off the fingers a little easier, but i can adjust to alt prtsc K23:27
lcbhehehe KM0201, that was a good one.. reminded me the "Press alt+f4" to tease ppl23:28
KM0201lcb, actually, it was what i wanted it to do.. yofel has been around long enough, that i figured eventually a key combination similar to that would get it to work23:28
yofelheh23:29
lcb:)23:29
yofeluse with caution though, since you can use sysrq as a replacement for your PCs reset  button too :P23:29
KM0201yofel, i don't do it very often at all, i just like having it if something is misbehaving.23:30
* yofel nods23:31
JamesJRHHey! Cool, I always wondered what SysRq was! Thanks yofel! (and ubottu) :D23:34
JamesJRHHmm... annoying that NM depends on X.23:34
KM0201JamesJRH, lol.. i've been using linux for the better part of 10yrs, sole OS for the last 5-6.. and I just found out this morning in #ubuntu that terminal had tab complete..lol.23:35
KM0201been a while since i really learned something in #ubuntu.. i was quite amazed23:35
JamesJRH:D23:35
JamesJRH:P23:36
JamesJRHIt'd be useful if loging out wouldn't stop the network.23:37
trismJamesJRH: click the "make available for all users" checkbox at the bottom of the dialog for editing connections and it won't23:37
bitplanehey, anyone using a surround sound system here with a sub?23:39
Waldiiis there someone who worked with switcheroo? :/23:39
bitplanei've got an odd bug, when I double click a track in banshee my sub disables until I change my sound settings23:39
bitplaneit's like it defaults to stereo23:40
JamesJRH_Yep, it works! I'm logged out right now! :D23:42

JamesJRHBut selecting "Available to all users" restarted my mobile broadband and gave me a new IP address which is why I lost connection to IRC.23:45
JamesJRHIs there a way of accessing NM from the command line?23:46
rww!info cnetworkmanager23:47
JamesJRHI've used netcfg and stuff in the past, but I want something that integrates with the GUI NM.23:47
ubottucnetworkmanager (source: cnetworkmanager): A command-line client for NetworkManager. In component universe, is extra. Version 0.21.1-1.1ubuntu1 (natty), package size 25 kB, installed size 208 kB23:47
JamesJRHHmm... I think I tried that on Arch Linux a year ago.23:48
JamesJRHI couldn't access mobile broadband.23:48
rwwah, I missed that bit. yeah, I think it's focused on wifi23:48
JamesJRHOnly ethernet and WiFi.23:49
JamesJRHIf it did mobile broadband it'd be great.23:49
hypetechwhy are VNC ports listening on a default natty install?23:51
JamesJRHCan I make networks connect automatically before login?23:51
trismJamesJRH: with wifi, when you make it available to all users, it will connect during boot before you log in, I don't know about mobile broadband, although I'd guess it would be the same23:52
Pici = new JLabel();23:53
Pici        23:53
JamesJRHtrism: Thanks.23:53
Piciargh, mispaste.23:53
JamesJRHtrism: I'll try it.23:53
nerdy_kidhi, I have an NVIDIA 8600GTM and compiz lags when windows are minimized.  I would like to know if anyone knows why...this graphics card can handle xonotic with vsync @60 fps...23:54
JamesJRH_I'm back. Hey it works! :d23:56
JamesJRH_:D23:56
JamesJRH_This is very useful.23:57
=== JamesJRH_ is now known as JamesJRH
JamesJRHI have a laptop that I use as an Internet sharing gateway to my 3 mobile broadband. I can now switch on the gateway without loging in!23:59
