JamesJRHI share the network to friends at college using an access point.00:00
JamesJRHThis will now mean that /they/ can switch on the gateway too.00:00
JamesJRH:D00:01
JamesJRHas no password is required!00:01
JamesJRHAll I need to do now is set up NM dispatcher to 'sudo ifconfig ppp0 mtu 1430'.00:04
JamesJRHThere really should be an MTU setting for mobile broadband.00:05
JamesJRHHey! It's seems cnetworkmanager has been replaced with nmcli since last year. It's built in to NM and is therefore available without installation on Natty.00:15
JamesJRHrww: Check out nmcli.00:16
ceed^I'm having these small touchpad (Synaptic) problems in natty. Sometimes boxes like "Save" and "Cancel" in programs can't be clicked. I have to tab to them and then hit enter. One example is in the Synaptic package manager when installing. I can not click either "Apply" or "Cancel" in the popup window. I have to tab to one of them and hit enter. Any ideas what may be wrong?00:18
kyubutsui've seen that too..00:19
kyubutsuand since yesterday desktop effects are kinda buggy too00:20
kyubutsuwe're just going to have to get to launchpad and wait for some updates00:21
ceed^kyubutsu, what kid of graphics card are you using?00:23
kavurti upgraded my computer. it used to connect to wifi with 10.10. but now it can't. but wifi is available under lspci. what can i do?00:23
kyubutsuradeon hd 5450 with fglrx00:23
ceed^kyubutsu, I've got nvidia, so it can't be related to that00:24
JamesJRHceed^: It's not the touchpad. I have a pointing stick. Buttons work in some places not others. They usually work round the edges.00:24
kyubutsudefinitely a bug00:24
ceed^JamesJRH, good to now. Thought it was problems with the Synaptic touchpad driver again. It was really messed up a couple of weeks ago and crashed X. Not fun.00:25
ceed^kyubutsu, I wou like to report it, but it's so "all over the place" that it's hard to point to where the bug belongs00:25
nerdy_kidanyone know how to speed up compiz on my nvidia geforce 8600M?  minimizing windows is laggy00:26
JamesJRHGTK maybe...00:26
JamesJRHIt doesn't always happen.00:27
JamesJRHI can't seem to reproduce the bug right now.00:27
ceed^JamesJRH, it always happen in the package manager though. When I'm installing something I can never click on "Apply"00:27
kyubutsui've experience this in different apps00:28
kyubutsubut JamesJRH is right, its not a consistent bug, but it is there00:29
JamesJRHceed^: Both the big icon with a tick on the main window, and the apply button on the summary dialog are working for me.00:30
ceed^JamesJRH, it's the buttons on the popup where you confirm installation that isn't working for me.00:30
JamesJRHceed^: Can you confirm that it works *anywhere* on the button? Try top, top-right, right, etc..00:32
JamesJRHDoes it highlight on hover?00:32
aromanhey guys, can anyone tell me how to get multitouch working in Natty on my laptop?00:32
ceed^JamesJRH, The "Apply" on the popup works on the edges, "Cancel" doesn't work at all. The Apply button on Synaptic itself works fine. Seems to happen more often on popup windows.00:34
ceed^No sorry, "Cancel" works on the edged also.00:35
JamesJRHceed^: Yes, it's the same bug I'm getting.00:35
JamesJRH(Sometimes getting)00:35
JamesJRHThe bug affects the highlight. If it highlights, it works. If it doesn't highlight it doesn't work.00:37

KyubeyBut when I set up the TV as a display, it cuts off a part of the top and left00:43
KyubeyI have no idea how to fix this00:43
JamesJRHaroman: Look in Mouse > Touchpad.00:44
JamesJRHKyubey: Sounds like a graphics driver bug.00:46
JamesJRHMaybe file it on Launchpad if not already filed.00:46
JamesJRHKyubey: Or a bug in Xorg.00:47
JamesJRHaroman: Did you find 2 finger scrolling?00:48
JamesJRHaroman: I've not tried it yet, but I was reading about multitouch earlier.00:50
JamesJRH(I don't have a multitouchpad yet, but I should have one by Thursday. New laptop! :D )00:52
JamesJRHaroman: Look at this: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticsTouchpad00:59
KyubeyNew plan!01:00
KyubeySince my TV does have vga, and apparently it supports the 1920*1080 VGA just fine01:00
KyubeyI'm going to buy a VGA cable and use that instead01:00
JamesJRH:)01:00

InternatJamesJRH: the lack of decent hdmi audio support01:19

JamesJRHInternat: HDMI is new, proprietary, and riddled with DRM. Of course it's not well supported yet.01:21
JamesJRHActually, I think it's an open standard, but nevertheless, it /is/ riddled with DRM technology.01:23
Internatoh i understand the reasons behind it. doesnt mean it doesnt make me cry :(01:25
JamesJRHLol.01:26
FlynsarmyIf 11.04 is being released on the 28th, shouldn't an RC be out by now? or are they not having one this time around?01:27
aguitelFlynsarmy, no rc01:28
JamesJRHI think DRM is the only thing I don't like about HDMI.01:28
Internatjust a bit painful when your building a media pc, and you want everythign going over hdmi, and then you struggle with audio01:28
Internati can get basic audio. but having to screw with modprobe.conf to get it to even do that is annoying.01:28
JamesJRHFlynsarmy: No RCs. See: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NattyReleaseSchedule01:29
JamesJRHInternat: I'm yet to test Natty (Mythbuntu) on a media center I built last year. The HDMI graphics output was low resolution. :(01:34

EpicCyndaquilI'm running Unity on my Cr48, and I'd like to be able to start the launcher with the "search" key. Is there a terminal command to start the launcher?03:33
EpicCyndaquilor another way to emulate the press of "Super", since there is no super on it?03:34
trismEpicCyndaquil: in ccsm on the unity plugin you can set the key to show the launcher, can you set it to the search key there?03:34
EpicCyndaquilwell the search key is a media key, can configure it in KeyTouch03:34
trismEpicCyndaquil: otherwise you could use: xdotool key Super03:35
EpicCyndaquilinstalling xdotool, I'll give it a shot03:35
EpicCyndaquilhm, oddly, the search key is bound in some other way, as it brings up "search for files"03:36

ubottuI'll remember that, rww03:37
trismEpicCyndaquil: yeah it is bring up the home dash for me, although I disabled hiding the launcher03:37
trismEpicCyndaquil: oh, I meant using xdotool and the Super key, not the search key03:38
EpicCyndaquiltrism: I still don't understand, why is it bringing up this search?03:38
EpicCyndaquiland yes, that's what I'm doing, that isn't the issue (at least I don't think so)03:39
trismEpicCyndaquil: hmm, just using the Super key (without xdotool) does the same thing03:40
EpicCyndaquilokay, well I disabled the search key in Keyboard Shortcut03:40
EpicCyndaquilbut I don't know how to assign a new shortcut to the panel opening03:42
EpicCyndaquildo you know where I can do that?03:42
EpicCyndaquil*launcher open03:42
trismEpicCyndaquil: I see the issue, it seems you need to hold Super to show the launcher, just clicking it brings up the dash03:43
EpicCyndaquilI don't believe so, typing in "xdotool key Super" in terminal works03:43
EpicCyndaquilWhere can I reconfigure the launcher open option?03:46
trismEpicCyndaquil: ccsm in the unity plugin03:46
EpicCyndaquilas in, if I wanted it to be a key other than Super?03:46

EpicCyndaquil(I'm new to Unity)03:56
syn-ackEpicCyndaquil, it's needed. Leave it alone.03:57
EpicCyndaquilI figured as much03:58
syn-ackLeave the Unity plugin alone too03:58
EpicCyndaquilof course. Can xdotool simulate multiple key presses? Such as "Ctrl+Shift+Alt <something>"?03:59

EpicCyndaquilis that the format I'd use?04:00
syn-ackDon't know04:00
syn-ackI use the tools that come with Gnome04:00
barbazelbecause unity (I suspect the culprit is compiz 0.9x) locks up on me every few seconds, for a second or so when I'm using it04:01
EpicCyndaquilindeed, that does work, just using the + operator04:01
barbazelits really irritating04:01
jbwivthe new launcher doesn't allow you to pass arguments to the application, or for that matter run other applications that don't appear in the launcher, like alt+f2 used to. Is there a way to get this behavior back?04:03
jbwivor mimic it in some way?04:03
trismjbwiv: not sure I understand, I just did alt+f2, gnome-terminal -x top; and it worked, for clicking in the launcher you can create custom launchers (right click the desktop, create launcher) and drag them over (or drag them to another folder and then drag them over so they don't clutter your desktop)04:08
jbwivtrism, ah...interesting. you are correct. I tried that once before and it didn't work, but it must've been my mistake04:11

andyccaroman, if Compiz is messing with your laptop, why use it? You can revert to a classic GNOME desktop or Unity 2D.06:01
aromanandycc: because I like compiz, and its not compiz in general (I don't think at least) thats causing the issue, it's just the 0.9x series which is still not stable iirc06:02

zniavre? please *14:10
lcbThe-frog, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IPv6 <- check that. But when you say it takes too long to connect, are you comparing with 10.10? Same machine? same configurations? Are you noticing that after desktop environment or on CLI after booting... a lot of considerations to take in account, for instance if is after reboot you notice the updates gives errors could mean a mirror delay, for instance.14:10
step21zniavre, app lense => appearance (for gtk theme) not sure if it applies to gdm14:11
rockyugh i'm so close to disabling Unity for the simple reason that i cannot disable the top bar on my secondary display where i run fullscreen graphical apps14:11

lcbThe-frog, then configurations differences, probably14:12

lcbThe-frog, in fact, if you change it will not produce changes on-the-fly, if is not correctly configured14:18

yofelwell yeah, but at least we're not going to get *new* bugs from them17:04
micahgyofel: that's what you think :)17:04
yofelhey it's release time, let me be optimistic a bit :P17:04
micahgand this is really offtopic :)17:04
somethinginteresI'm finding the launcher takes too long to hide e.g. I open my /home folder go to click "Documents" straight away but the launcher is in the way. Can I fix this?17:06
KM0201somethinginteres: i couldn't make any sense of what you just said.17:08
KM0201lol17:08
somethinginteresKM0201: fair enough it's late here. How to describe... so I move my mouse to the left of the screen then the launcher appears I click the home folder icon which loads Nautilus. As soon as it loads I want to click an icon in the places menu (e.g. "Network") but the Unity Launcher takes too hide so it stays in the way I'm not able to fully interact with Nautilus because it is being obscured until the launcher hides.17:10
audhiis anyone here i have to ask one doubt?17:11
compdocdoubt?17:11
yofel!ask | audhi17:11
ubottuaudhi: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-)17:11
audhiwhen final version of ubuntu is released?17:12
somethinginteresaudhi: 28th of April 201117:12
compdocmaybe tomorrow17:12
yofelprobably tomorrow, no fixed time17:13
audhican i upgrade the alpha in to final version?17:13
Pici!final17:13
ubottuIf you install a development version of Ubuntu Natty and keep up with package updates, then you will be upgraded to the official release of 11.04 when it comes out. To make sure, type « sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade » in a console.17:13
audhiwhat are the new features in 11.04/17:15
yofelhttp://www.ubuntu.com/testing/natty/beta#Features%20new%20to%20Natty%20Narwhal17:15
audhisorry not / it is ?17:15
compdocI installed 10.10 then upgraded to 11.4. But I think I'll erase and install new when 11.4 is released17:16
step21compdoc, Was that a question?17:18
audhicompdoc, you cant.17:20
compdoccant what?17:20
PiciCan't what?17:20
compdoccant reinstall? sure I can17:21
step21yeah, that's always possible :)17:21
Pici(although its 11.04 not 11.4)17:21
step21wether it's actually better afterwards is something else17:21
audhihow step21?17:22
step21audhi, insert install disc, reboot, format partition and everything as normal, install => fresh system17:22
step21why shouldn't it be possible?17:22
KM0201i keep getting a skype call from "Skype Technical Support"..lol.. this has to be a scam, and i don't feel like talking to them, but it makes me lol17:24
audhistep21, what os is the best os in linux?17:24
KM0201Pici: i say that all the time (the 11.04 vs 11.4) and peole just look at me like i just fell off the bannana boat, its like, at least say it properly17:25
dios_miodo you guys also get some error messages in terminal if you run gedit?17:26
dios_mioi did gksudo gedit and when closing it i get error messages17:26
KM0201dios_mio: thats pretty common when using gksudo17:27
KM0201as long as it lets you make whatever changes your making, and save the file, i wouldn't worry about it.17:27
KM0201or at least i never have17:27
dios_miook cool17:27
dios_mioso how do you stop using compiz?17:28
step21dios_mio, on login choose classic17:28
dios_miook17:28
compdocwhere can I ride a bannana boat? that sounds fun17:28
Picio.O17:29
dios_miostep21, but how to stop it if it is running?17:29
step21dios_mio, well, if your desktop is running right now, you shouldn't stop it. If you log into classic it shouldn't start afaik17:30
step21*if your desktop is running compiz17:30
IdleOnedios_mio: at the login screen choose Classic desktop (no effects)17:30
semitoneshey you guys I have some problems in the natties that i want to report, but i don't know the packages17:34
yofelif it's graphical, run 'ubuntu-bug -w' and click on the app17:35
dios_miook I logged in to ubuntu (no effects).. now should i disable my ati drivers too? which is better ati drivers or ubuntu edrivers?17:35
compdocwhich ever works17:35
somethinginteresanyone know the status of installing 11.04 with wubi? Still buggy?17:37
step21somethinginteres, probably. works for me in virtual box though if you want to try17:39
knowbodySo why do I want to move off of 9.x?  Is it a feature or something else useful for a 32bit lenovo HW that would be sueful.17:40
knowbodysueful=useful17:40
somethinginteresstep21: ordinarily I do a clean install but I am not sure how to go about it with Wubi17:40
knowbodywubi only works if it has windows to initiate the process....17:41
step21yeah ...17:41
knowbodyfrom an ubuntu centric point of view (no windows installed on the machine you boot and run from the CD and do a fresh install.17:45
dios_miook so i messed up my desktop: i installed compizconfig-settings-manager and i clicked on "restore to defaults" and i lost my window borders... and when i chose "unity" and "restored to defaults" again, window borders come back but it is all so messed up... what do?17:50
hypetechdios_mio: I had a similar problem yesterday, I ran "unity --reset" I think it was, then rebooted and all was fine17:51
dios_miohypetech: thanks bro17:52
dios_miook i did unity --reset and then rebooted. and now i have a unity tool bar in the classic desktop17:59
hypetechdios_mio: go back in your ccsm and see if unity is enabled17:59
dios_mioit is unity in profile18:00
dios_miobut i am logged in to the "classic" desktop still having unity toolbar18:00
dios_mioi have the taskbar at bottom at the same time18:00
hypetechdios_mio: ah yea, when I rebooted, at the login screen it was set to ubuntu classic by default, I had to switch it back to ubuntu.  Log out and try changing that then logging back in18:02
dios_miook18:02
dios_miowell my classic desktop returned to normal when i did metacity --replace.. but that kills compiz i guess and i get no effects18:17
somethinginteresdios_mio: try ALT+F2 and type "unity --reset"18:22
soreauSo does unity happen inside of gnome? Or is there no gnome happening at all in the default unity session?18:22
hypetechsoreau: unity runs on top of gnome, yes18:23
soreauhypetech: Ok that's what I thought18:24
somethinginteressoreau: Ubuntu still uses GNOME, however, and most of what you see on the screen is still GNOME technology. Unity is just a shell running on top of the regular desktop.18:24
soreausomethinginteres: Well I already know unity is just a very hacked up version of compiz18:25
soreauI just didn't know if it used gnome3 with non-shell or what18:25
=== hallyn is now known as hallyn_afk
somethinginteressoreau: Ubuntu 11.04 still uses GNOME 218:29
soreausomethinginteres: Ok18:30
Omegasoreau: what? Unity isn't a hacked up version of compiz18:43
soreauOmega: Says who?18:43
bittinXorg crashed but trying to run apt-get -f upgrade in a framebuffer now and will check if it fixes the problem18:43
Omegasoreau: The code?18:43
soreauOmega: Not sure what you're reading but unity has different parts18:44
soreauone of which is a compiz plugin18:44
Omegayes18:44
OmegaThat is true.18:44
OmegaNow, where does what you said follow out of this?18:44
bittinKubuntu 11.04 beta 2 seems to work only problems so far is that my window manager dwm won't start and the sound won't work :(18:56
dios_mioguyz, can you install KDE side by side with gnome?19:00
bittindeleted pulseaudio and now the sound works, now its just wait for a working dwm :)19:01
soreaudios_mio: yes19:02
dios_miosoreau: no complicationz?19:02
soreauWell, gnome and kde apps will appear in both DEs menus19:04
soreauAnd some may not run in the opposing DE, depending what it is19:04
dios_miohrm19:04
dios_mioi better keep my gnome19:04
dios_mioearlier i messed it up19:04
dios_miobut it seems fine now19:04
dios_miosoreau: the other day i installed gnome 3 ppa.. then my system was messed up for good. i reinstalled ubuntu beta lol19:05
soreauppa-purge FTW19:06

vegahmm, is there a known problem with "nvidia" (the binary one) xorg driver? i get "driver not found" and thus x does not start. still it is installed19:13
vegaalso, lsmod lists no nvidia related modules19:13
soreauvega: Do you have nvidia-current installed?19:17
yofelvega: does 'dkms status' show the module built for your kernel?19:17
bitplaneanyone around to test a bug before I raise it on the tracker?19:20
MonkeyDustis it possible to change the unity keyboard shortcuts? now i need two hands to switch windows, i want to use only one hand, like in gnome19:28
jbwivanyone using terminator in unity? Seems like I can no longer create multiple windows :-/19:30
MonkeyDustis it possible to add a custom terminal command as launcher, like in gnome?19:30
bitplaneMonkeyDust: you mean compiz settings?19:35
bitplaneopen ccsm and change all that19:35
MonkeyDustbitplane: i mean unity19:36
dios_miohe means as a unity button19:36
vegasoreau: yes19:36
MonkeyDusti don't like the unity keyboard shortcuts and i want to change them19:36
bitplaneoh, the number things?19:36
vegayofel: nvidia-current 270.41.06: added19:37
MonkeyDustbitplane: yes, that, i want to use alt-tab, like before19:37
yofeladded? dkms status *should* give something like:19:38
yofelnvidia-current, 270.41.06, 2.6.38-8-generic, x86_64: installed19:38
bitplaneMonkeyDust: to use alt+tab I just set up the ring switcher in ccsm19:38
yofelvega: what kernel are you running?19:38
soreauvega: Does 'find /lib/modules/$(uname -r) -name nvidia.ko' show the module exists?19:38
MonkeyDustbitplane: but that's compiz, not unity19:38
bitplaneerm shift switcher.. super+tab is switch window in all workspaces, alt+tab is next window19:38
bitplaneah, you're using the 2d version?19:39
vegayofel: standard natty19:39
vegasoreau: does not exist (only nvidiafb.ko)19:39
yofelvega: does this run fine? sudo dkms build -m nvidia-current -v 270.41.06 -k $(uname -r)19:40
vega2.6.38-8-generic-pae19:40
* yofel wonders where the dkms logs were...19:40
vegayofel: doh, it can't find the kernel headers ..19:42
vegathat just *may* be related ...19:42
yofel...19:42
yofelwhy the hell doesn't it depend on them...19:42
vegathinking the same19:42
yofeloh wait...19:43
soreauvega: Does /usr/lib/nvidia-current/xorg/nvidia_drv.so exist?19:43
vegaand i had them on the previous kernel, this was an upgrade from maverick19:43
yofelit *does* depend on them, but not for -pae it seems19:43
vegayes it does19:43
bjsniderall he has to do is reinstall nvidia-current19:43
soreauvega: Or try 'find /usr/lib/ -name nvidia_drv.so'19:43
MonkeyDustwhat's the command line for the 'classic' gnome-menu?19:43
soreauvega: Can you pastebin the X log from the failed session? /var/log/Xorg.0.log19:44
soreauMonkeyDust: gnome-panel?19:44
vegawas there a command line tool for pastebin?19:44
yofelpastebinit19:44
vegapastethanks19:44
yofelsoreau: erm, how would that be helpful if the module isn't there?19:45
vegaalso wondering why i got the pae kernel after the upgrade (didn't have it before)19:45
MonkeyDustsoreau: ok, and how can i add that as a launcher in unity?19:45
bjsniderthe pae kernel would be automatically picked if you have 4gb of ram or more19:45
vegasoreau: http://paste.ubuntu.com/59992119:45
bjsniderand you chose i38619:45
vegabjsnider: ah ok, this one has 4gb19:45
bjsnideryofel, he probably just doesn't have the kernel headers metapackage installed19:46
soreauvega: I don't know exactly how nvidia drivers work these days but apparently the module is no longer called nvidia.ko for whatever reason19:47
vegalinux-headers-generic-pae is not installed19:47
vegasoreau: ok i see, but still xorg.conf should have "Driver" "nvidia" presumably19:47
MonkeyDustis it possible to add a custom terminal command as launcher, like in gnome?19:48
bitplaneany of you guys use surround sound and have a subwoofer?19:48
yofelbjsnider: agreed19:48
soreauvega: Yes, it's loading nvidia_drv.so (hence nvidia in xorg.conf) but failing to find the nvidia kernel module19:48
yofelbjsnider: btw, do you know what triggers the module build if you start a kernel that doesn't have the module built yet?19:48
yofelthat doesn't seem to work in natty for me anymore19:48
bjsniderit's add/build/install19:49
vegahmm seems it started to build the driver when installing the hreader package19:49
vegaheader19:49
bjsniderso the next step is build19:49
luitebitplane: my htpc is connected to a surround kit with sub, but it runs lucid, not natty19:49
soreauvega: The only thing I can suggest is trying to load nvidiafb.ko manually first before starting X with 'sudo modprobe nvidiafb' then startx19:50
yofelsoreau: nvidiafb is *not* the driver, and he's missing the kernel headers, that's all19:50
bjsnidersoreau, his problem is he doesn't have the module installed at all. try to keep up19:51
vegacorrect, things work now, X up and running after installing headers19:51
soreaubjsnider: I'm not reading what anyone else is saying19:51
soreauI thought he wasn't getting help19:51
bjsnideroh, that explains it19:51
vegathanks all19:51
yofelyw19:51
soreauSo why then does nvidia.ko not appear in packages.ubuntu.com?19:52
soreauDoes nvidia-current download the module from some other source?19:52
vegaoh wait.. hmm all i get is a cursor, where are my gnome panels? :)19:52
yofelsoreau: because it's built by dkms when you install nvidia-current?19:52
bjsnideryofel, i think maybe you and i should stop reading what everyone is writing in here and start throwing random meaningless messages in here just for our own amusement19:53
soreauyofel: yea I don't use nvidia crap19:53
soreauI don't know how it works19:53
yofelbjsnider: that would at least be quite relaxing19:53
MathuinIs there an easy way to determine whether tightvnc has been upgraded in Natty?19:54
yofelyes, packages.ubuntu.com19:54
vegahmm so now it's overscanning or something.. xorg.conf from maverick does not work with never nvidia driver19:54
yofelMathuin: quick answer, no, if you mean tightvncserver19:54
MonkeyDustcan i edit *any* unity  launcher or taskbar?19:55
bjsnidervega, so you have linux-headers-<version>-generic-pae installed now right?19:55
bitplaneluite: oh, there appears to be a bug in pulseaudio where channel #5 is disabled whenever a new (GStreamer?) output is created. Clicking a track in banshee or Rhythmbox turns my sub off19:55
vegabtw, if i had auto-login to *gnome* in maverick, should it stick after upgrade to natty? or is it being silly and now tries to use unity?19:55
vegabjsnider: yep, and x up and running and can access gnome menu using right-click, but panels are nowhere to be seen :)19:56
bjsniderit will try unity if you have compositing19:56
Mathuinyofel: thanks.  :-(  1.3.9 crashes on me all the time, and apparently it's been a known problem since 9.10 :-(19:56
soreauvega: unity wasn't in maverick (or at least the natty implementation) so it will probably try to use unity19:56
vegacomposite is disabled in xorg.conf19:56
soreauvega: 'grep -i composite /var/log/Xorg.0.log' will tell you if it's actually enabled or not19:56
luitebitplane: hm, don't have that problem I think since I don't use pulseaudio. I run xbmc, but I had to swap some channels in the alsa config.19:56
bjsnidervega, delete the org.conf file and execute: sudo jockey-text -e xorg:nvidia_current19:57
vegait is not19:57
bjsniderthat will create a fresh xorg.conf19:57
luitebitplane: I had enough problems getting hdmi 6-channel output working on lucid, so I don't really want to upgrade now :)19:58
vegahmm, could work, but in the end i probably need my old conf because i need 1080p@50Hz exactly19:58
bitplanehehe yeah my xbmclive box had all sorts of audio issues19:58
bitplaneI won't be upgrading that in a hurry19:58
bjsnidervega, then just move the old one to xorg.conf.old or something20:00
bjsnideryou can possibly mix in parts of the old one into the new one20:00
vegaok i recreated it, now something like a unity panel on the left seems to have appeared20:01
vegaaccording to xrandr it is 1080p@50Hz .. weird20:01
bjsnidervega, why did you select i386?20:04
vegabjsnider: select where?20:04
bjsniderwhen you decided to install ubuntu20:04
vegano idea, originally  it was 9.04 or 8.10.. can't remember20:05
vegayou mean i should have used 64bit?20:05
bjsniderwitht hat much ram you probably should have20:06
vegaalso don't remember how much ram the machine had during original install20:06
bjsnideri doubt you have a system that's too old20:06
vegahardware is 64bit yes.. amd 5050e or something like that20:07
vegasee,s that jockey-text actually did not create an xorg.conf at all20:07
bjsnideryou're going to get more speed out of 64 in most cases20:10
macovooze: its not like they're separate releases20:11
macovooze: beta 2 is just a cd snapshot of the archive on that date20:11
voozeah, i see :)20:12
voozewell i just dist upgrade in terminal, yestoday20:12
Picimaco: I'm thinking we may want a separate factoid about that (other than !final, I'm not sure how to phrase it though)20:13
vegabjsnider: this is mainly a htpc that uses vdpau for video decoding so desktop speed etc. is not that important20:13

lvhIs the way to get the smallest possible Ubuntu desktop install still "download the server edition and then add packages as required"21:16
Picilvh: I'd suggest using the minimal install myself, but yes.21:16
lvhPici: Oh, there's a minimal install -- I wasn't aware.21:17
Pici!minimal21:17
ubottuThe Minimal CD image is very small in size, and it downloads most packages from the Internet during installation, allowing you to select only those you want (the installer is like the one on the !Alternate CD). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD21:17
lvhPici: Accessible from the desktop install media?21:17
Picilvh: No, its a separate iso.21:18
lvhCool, thanks.21:18
lvhPici: Yeah, sorry, I asked my question before I saw the bot response21:18
Picilvh: If natty isn't listed there, just replace the release name on one of the links, the files should be there.21:18
lvhCool, thanks.21:18
mzuverinkI have been using classic gnome, I switched to ubuntu w/ unity, and did not like it so I switched back. Upon logging in, it was nothing but a plain wallpaper, no panels, no icons, nothing. It was like my settings for my gnome desktop disappeared.  Has anyone heard of this? Is there a fix? Google has been no help.21:33

yofelBajK: vt.handoff is hardcoded in /etc/grub.d/10_linux, same as the $linux_gfx_payload part, but that's intentionally a variable I think23:12
BajKbut I think one of them breaks my system startup23:13
BajKit's either that vt.handoff or the $linux_Gfx_payload or plymouth (quiet splash)23:13
BajKif I remove all three it starts fine in 95%23:13

pace_t_zululcb: i had issues on my old MacBook with usb booting... but since then i've heard that the physical port you choose is relevant23:28
lcbpace_t_zulu, you are not the first with that issue. i don't know if there is a known workaround already but it seems might be resolved burning usb with unetbootin. (better so you don't waste CDs)23:29
