ray_Anyhow I have an unrelated question01:17
ray_I used to open Chatzilla by opening Firefox first, so I when to the chatzilla channel and they said to use the command "firefox -chat"01:18
ray_I need to make a launcher and try it first I guess01:19
ray_I will be back and if the launcher also opens a terminal I will ask my question, if not then I don't have a question01:20

Eiriksvini got a silly noob question... is Ubuntu 10.10 maverick? or is there one for each code name?02:58
pleia2Eiriksvin: 10.04 is lucid, 10.10 is maverick, 11.04 is natty03:02
Eiriksvin<+pleia2> thanks03:05
Eiriksvinyeah i found out all about the release months and so on the next one is coming out the end of this month:)03:05
Eiriksvinimma noob, but this Linux is sweet03:06
Eiriksvinfor the people, by the people... not for the people, to buy... empty their pockets, charge them for antivirus, put them through the ringer when they get one anyway... then empty their pockets again. Wash, rinse, repeat:)03:09
Eiriksvinok sorry for the off topic:)03:09
ray_I am wondering, when I use the terminal and I know I've made a mistake, like for instance I am messing around and decided to man characters such as ", I knew it isn't a command but I've seen this before when the terminal goes from this "ray@ray-desktop:~$" to this ">", what's it for?03:42
ray_Also, I was searching for every command linux has to offer, but I realize that that would be near impossible, like for instance if I do r tab tab then the terminal will list all the currently installed packages, then I accidentally hit enter because I was trying to get more by hitting enter and it said r wasn't installed, lol03:46
ray_If I for instance03:46
ray_Just do tab tab then everything installed is listed03:46
ray_among that list is !, so I did man !, but there was no man page for it03:47
ray_Anyways03:47
ray_So many commands to choose from03:47
ray_I copied all the commands that were listed, it's nutz03:49
ray_I mean I copied all the commands listed to a text file03:50
=== Laggg is now known as Laggg9k
ray_for instance do "$" and hit tab twice03:50
ray_I am wondering though if all of what's listed when doing tab tab are all commands?03:51
ray_I am thinking not03:51
ray_But I don't no any better03:51
ray_Which is why I am here asking03:52
ray_I will leave this open so I can read what someone has to say03:53
LQLquest: i am using xubuntu, my software mgr is 'recommending' a load of KDE software? should i load it?03:57
LQLit seems to be redundant software03:57
UbuntuN00bdoes anyone use midnight commander still or do they just use gnome commander?03:58
jolowgeneral question: i use xubuntu and my software mgr is 'recommending' that i load quite a few KDE apps?04:11

holsteinOR use something that doesnt require so much KDE :)04:13
holsteinwould i?04:13
Eiriksvinim following a tutorial04:13
holsteindepends04:13
holsteinif its something i really had to have04:13

holsteinclose the package manager and relax :)04:17
Eiriksvinits installed and it says the hardware is there, but it wont do the winking light like the tutorial says04:18
holsteinjolow: the reason you get KDE software added is to support KDE apps04:18
holsteinSO04:18
holsteinsomething is going on there with a KDE application04:18
holsteinOR04:18
Eiriksvinhow do i get it to work?04:18

jolowwanted to know why it is recommending KDE stuff that seems redundant04:20
jolow10.1004:20
holsteinjolow: i would try and review what all you have installed04:20
holsteinsee what is pulling in what04:20
holsteinand why04:20
jolowok thx i'll do that04:21
holsteinjolow: how about in the terminal?04:21
holsteinsudo apt-get update04:21
holsteinsudo apt-get upgrade04:21
holsteindo you still see the same KDE apps?04:21
jolowhavn't checked it04:21
holsteinEiriksvin: im not sure whats going on04:21
jolowi'll try that also04:21
holsteinthese days, hardware is so cheap04:22
holsteini usually fire off a nasty email to the vendor04:22
holsteinand replace it04:22
holsteinthat being said04:22
holsteinEiriksvin: there was another option i linked to you before04:22
holsteinone without using the windows drivers04:22
holsteindid you try that?04:22
holsteinEiriksvin: HEY04:25
holsteindid you try the windrivers package04:26
holsteinfrom that page?04:26
holsteinhttp://ubuntuforums.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=54578&d=119893998004:26

MrsHillBillyHello. I have just installed Ubuntu but I cannot access the internet. My wireless connection says device not ready - firmware missing. Can anyone help please20:38
jledbetterknowbody, some chat clients allow you to have something happen when someone types your name. That helps me. That way if someone really wants me to see something, they type my name and my window alerts me to come read.20:38
MrsHillBilly!help20:39
ubot2Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-)20:39

asterismohdd led is always on21:14
asterismois driving me crazy21:14
coz_asterismo,  do you htop installed?21:14
coz_asterismo,  if you install that then open it ,, it should show you want is taking up most of the resources21:14
coz_you can then click any process and hit F9  I believe to end process21:15
coalwatertop is installed by default21:16
coalwaterdunno what's differnet in htop though21:16
coz_coalwater,  can you disable processes on top?21:16
coz_with top rather21:16
coalwateru get the process id, then u can do kill id21:16
coalwateror do killall process_name21:16
coz_coalwater,  with htop  you just click to highlight the process and hit F921:17

coz_?21:36
coz_nevrmind21:36
coz_iotops21:36
asterismomouse is choppy21:37
coz_asterismo,  something isdefinitly using up resources there,, but I am puzzled21:37
asterismomouse have a cut motion21:37
coz_asterismo,  what else do you have running right now?21:38
asterismoi googleled about ubuntuone-syncdaemon21:38
asterismokswapd021:38
asterismothe io scheduler21:38
asterismoi changed it to "deadline"21:38
asterismobut no noticeable difference21:39
asterismoi found this bug21:39
asterismohttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/15935621:39

ubot2Factoid '159356' not found21:39
coz_asterismo,  not sure  here is a quick example of iotop on my system    http://paste.ubuntu.com/599982/21:40
coz_asterismo,  so somehow we have to find what is using up the resources for you21:41
asterismogood question21:41
asterismowhen system is idle i have similar iotops21:42
asterismoall zeros...21:42
asterismobut not when using it or waiting apps to start21:42
coz_asterismo,  apparenlt  the system is using swap which would account for slow down21:43
asterismowhen i switch between tabs... iotop gets very high21:43
asterismobut not the CPU21:43
asterismoCPU is kinda quiet21:43
asterismothe hard drive is a sata 2 taken by the mobo as sata 121:44
asterismois a 720 rpm 500 gb hdd21:44
asterismoit should be fast enough21:44
asterismoi mean21:45
asterismoit only swapped 100 -200 mb21:45
asterismoand the behavior is the same even with 40 mb of used swap21:46
asterismoit doesnt matter21:46
coz_asterismo,   then I am puzzled,,, what you can do is go to the ##linux channel and as there,, someone may have a solution21:46
coz_asterismo,  if you find ou t let us know21:46
