ArisVerHi, a question about the root account. Why it is not advisable to login as root?13:15
bazhang!sudo13:17
ubottusudo is a command to run command-line programs with superuser privileges ("root") (also see !cli). Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo for more information. For graphical applications see !gksu (GNOME, Xfce), or !kdesudo (KDE). If you're unable to execute commands with sudo see: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/fixsudo13:17
ArisVerThanx bazhang , that is not what i asked...13:18
=== Thermi is now known as thermi
knomeit is not advisable to use root account, since ubuntu has sudo, which is safer13:18
ArisVerIn what way is safer? Apart from learning typing.!13:19
knomewith root account, any kind of exploits are easier, with sudo you will think if the thing you typed is exactly what you wanted13:20
bazhangsudo -i for a root shell if you must13:20

mitchellhi im new to xubuntu and need help16:36
zenroxwhat do ya need?16:36
Soupermanhello, so i had to install gnome-screensaver and gnome-power-manager in order to totem avoiding the screensaver poping up while im watching movies, but now i dont have a screensaver setting option on the programs menu, i can launch it from a terminal, but i need it to be on the menu because not all the people who uses this pc knows how to terminals, so is there a way to add the gnome-screensaver-preferences to the menu? or better to make totem not loa16:36
Soupermanding the screensaver when playing movies whitout installing the gnome apps?16:36
zenroxya add it to the menu using menu editor16:37
mitchelli installed xubuntu on a windows 7 machine and only gave xubuntu 15 gb of my 250 gb hd can i add more space easily or do i have to create another partition im also new to partitions16:38
zenroxyes technal you can by shrinking win7 partion and expanding ubuntus partion16:38
zenroxand you could creat a new partion to add more that way too16:39
Soupermanor he could "share" the win7 partition whit xubuntu16:39
charlie-tcazenrox: no menu editor in Xubuntu16:39

Soupermani found it16:39
charlie-tcaused, could, should, still doesn't exist16:40
Soupermanits called "menu principal"16:40
Soupermani have it bro16:40
mitchellis there a program to use to do this or a website with instructions i hate to be a bother to you and if i can read it i can do it16:40

charlie-tcaof course. Xubuntu does not have a menu editor, because Xfce 4.6 does not have the capability to use a menu editor16:47

ubottugreenmang0: If you want to remove all !KDE and !Gnome packages and have a default !Xubuntu system follow the instructions here « http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purexfce »16:56
charlie-tcaSouperman: I will give you three ways to edit the menus, but the easiest way is to add .desktop file to ~/.local/applications16:57
charlie-tcaSouperman:16:58
charlie-tca1. [for 4.6] copy '/etc/xdg/menus/xfce-applications.menu to '~/.config/xdg/menus' and customize it.16:58
charlie-tca2. [for 4.6] You can also create desktop entries in '~/.local/share/applications' to override the existing applications (change or hide) or add new ones.16:58
charlie-tca3. http://wiki.xfce.org/howto/customize-menu16:58
Soupermanim reading that wiki but it doesnt make any sense16:59
charlie-tcaSouperman: you can copy the .desktop files from /usr/share/applications to ~/.local/share/applications16:59
drccharlie-tca: please explain...<something> installs it in a fresh xubuntu (10.10 and 11.04) install.  When I try to delete it, it says I must remove the Software Center as well.16:59
charlie-tcayup17:00
charlie-tcathen you can add software center back again.17:00
hunger__hey all17:00
hunger__think i just had a kernal panic, and xubuntu crashed (11.04) whie moving windows between workstations, how can i debug this?17:00
charlie-tcathe way the dependencies are set up, it is required to be removed with xubuntu- something17:00
charlie-tcabut you can install Software Center without reinstalling xubuntu-desktop17:01
hunger__figured i may as well help to debug it and report it if it's a bug... i was on xubuntu 10.10 and upgraded to xfce 4.8(?) prior to going to 11.0417:01
greenmang0charlie-tca, thanks17:01
charlie-tcaIt will not be a valid bug, since 4.8 is not supported on Xubuntu 10.1017:01
charlie-tcagreenmang0: You are welcome17:01
charlie-tcahunger__: it is invalid17:02
hunger__charlie, gotcha, i'm thinking i should just do a fresh install of xubuntu, who knows what i've b0rked in the years of tinkering w/ this install :D17:02
charlie-tcaI agree with that17:03
drccharlie-tca: nah..I'll leave it (I was just wondering about your statement "<charlie-tca> Xubuntu really doesn't install it"...Heck, I still have Totem on the machine because removing it plays heck with trying to re-assign "open with" in Thunar :(17:03
Souperman^17:03
charlie-tcadrc: not meant for software center, meant for any menu editor in xubuntu since about 8.0417:03
Soupermanthats why im trying to make totem work nice whit the screensavers17:04
charlie-tcaI use parole for movies, before that I used vlc, since totem has too many issues to play nice17:04
mitchellok new question im using xfce is there a difference in it and gnome and can i use programs universally between the two17:05

Sysii'm kinda useless for LoCo since i don't use basic ubuntu, but it just sucks :/17:41

Sysicharlie-tca: with unity or with anything?17:42
drcSysi: If you want to look at gnome3, try the Fedora15beta liveCD17:42
Sysieverything sucks quite badly with default setup, xfce is easiest to set up, kde has more options but it still lacks some17:42
charlie-tcaOnce you install gnome3 from the ppa, it can not be removed properly17:42
charlie-tcaThere is no way yet to get rid of gnome3, and it does take over the OS.17:43
Sysidrc: i maybe will update to F15 completely, netbook stays xubuntu natty as it's the best17:44
Sysii *could* test if jockey works properly on natty before it..17:45
* drc may be a heretic, but he thinks he likes gnome3 better than Unity, although Unity is more polished.17:45

charlie-tcaArisVer: not a problem, that is just an advisory message18:44
ArisVerdrc, are you in that page?18:48
drcwhat page?18:49
ArisVerThe one you post a link to.18:49
drcI am now :)18:49
ArisVerIn the second square, editing xorg.conf, i have nothing listed there.18:50
ArisVerJust an empty white page.18:50
drcArisVer: Usually that means that X is doing a good job of figuring out what it needs without one.  You can just make one, and it will add what you put there to the X startup.18:51
ArisVerOk.18:51
ArisVerI expected to find at least something in from the setup.18:52
drcSo did I, but X has come a long way since the early days, and now can usually figure out what it needs without your interference :)18:53
ArisVerIs it good to save the file? as a backup?18:54
drcI ALWAYS save a copy of any config file that I edit.18:54
drcUsually same name.ORIGINAL or name.DTG18:55
ArisVerNeed to get some cdrs...or with a usb on another hd.18:56
ArisVerAre u still in that page?18:58
drcI have 1@160gig HDD(internal), 1@500gig USB HDD (for video/audio), 1@40gig USB HDD (data archive)and 2@8gig USBsticks (working saves).  I rarely use cd/dvd's anymore, unless I want triple backup18:58
drcyes18:59
ArisVercount 6 boxes. ServerLayout18:59
drcyes19:00
ArisVerI have 4 hds, internal, a 250, a 30 a 5 and a ONEGB ;) MIght install a dvdrw instead of the 1GB.19:00
ArisVerDo i copy all the lines in xorg?19:01
drcArisVer: AS I said, I am not a X or synaptics expert, I just found that page as a start for your problem. Maybe someone that has more knowledge of X can help19:02
ArisVerIt says adding a line, but only one line , would it make sense?19:02
ArisVerI thought you were. Anyways you must be a lot better than i.19:02
drcIt looks like it's assuming you already have a xorg.conf19:03
drcwhat is your video card?19:03
ArisVerI'm not a gamer, used to play 10 years ago. A 32MB nVidia.19:04
drcAre you using the nvidia proprietar drive ?19:04
drcdriver, that is19:05
ArisVerYes, this is my main rig, updated drivers from Administration-->Additional drivers, Ubuntu 10.1019:06
ArisVerIt did made difference.19:06
ArisVerI also have an external usb 40GB hd, mainly for backup. And a 4GB usb stick. Theses and the laptop were my brothers , and he did not want them anymore. Lucky me.19:08
drcok, then if you don't have a xorg.conf already, then maybe you can make one with nvidia-config  "sudo nvidia-xconfig"  This should give you a basic xorg.conf tailored to your system.  Read the resulting xorg.conf and then see what you need to modify to solve your touchpad problem.19:11
ArisVerSome more info, even though it's off topic, sorry guys, but you may find this interesting, (also a blank page for ubuntu), i used computers from 1994 until 2002. Then i had a loong break. This year i started again, because i'm bored doing nothing, and because it's fun and useful.19:15
drcLunchtime !!!! bbl19:16
ArisVerWell, i just finished the tutorial, it looks a bit complex, covers everything for the touchpad, and it's a trial to find the settings you like. But not right now, i'll have an early night tonight.19:50
ArisVerSo, goodnight to all and fairwell, thank you for your support.19:55
mitchellwhat are the advantages to ubuntu vs xubuntu20:32
charlie-tcaxubuntu has nicer colors20:34
Sysithey're different, xubuntu may lack something but it uses less ram20:34
charlie-tcaxubuntu is lighter; needs less ram, less hard disk, less cpu20:35
charlie-tcaxubuntu does not have to have a hardware video driver to look good20:35
mitchellso xubuntu runs faster20:35
charlie-tcaNo, I did not say that20:35
mitchellwhat is it missing to make it lighter20:36
charlie-tcagnome20:36
pleia2it's also more customizable (my favorite thing about it, I have 3 clocks in my panel, with 3 time zones!)20:36
charlie-tcaI run Orage world clock, with 18 time zones, as a small panel on every workspace20:36
charlie-tcamitchell: why should it be missing anything?20:37
charlie-tcaI have not found anything I can't do with Xubuntu that I can do in Ubuntu20:37
mitchellhow is it lighter without missing something20:37
charlie-tcaxfce is not gnome20:37
Sysiit's different, try20:38
Sysiyou can have both desktops20:38
mitchellright im running xubuntu on my windows laptop and love it havent used windows in months just wondering what else there is and if its better20:39
charlie-tcaUnlike Windows, where you have a single operating system. linux has many to choose from. The major desktops in linux are KDE, Gnome, and Xfce.20:39
Sysii started with xubuntu because i had too little ram, i got more and was disappointed with gnome20:39
charlie-tcaThey are different applications and programs to do the same thing.20:40
charlie-tcaI started with Ubuntu, and then tried Xubuntu. Xubuntu allows me more opportunity to configure it the way I want to.20:41
mitchelli have a 1.6 ghz atom processor 1 gb ram and 250 gb hd what os should i use i dont care about appearance only speed and variety of programs20:41
charlie-tcaI don't know how much difference in speed you would see.20:42
Sysiif you like xubuntu, just use it20:42
Sysiyou can install ubuntu-desktop if you want and login to that20:43
mitchellok thanks20:43
charlie-tcaYou are using a virtualbox now, just create a second one and try Ubuntu on it's own20:45
charlie-tcaor, is that a wubi installation?20:46
Sakuragnohallo21:21
Sakuragnois there anybody should help me with wireless problem?21:21
charlie-tca!hi | Sakuragno21:21
ubottuSakuragno: Hi!, Welcome to #xubuntu! Feel free to ask questions and help people out. The channel guidelines are at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/Guidelines. Enjoy your stay!21:21
zenroxi guess he dint what his wifi fixed21:42
mitchelli think its a wubi installation it is a separate partition21:44
drcor it fixed itself automagically21:44
mitchellive never used a virtual machine before i have one just never messed with it21:44
charlie-tcamitchell: if it is has an entry in windows add/remove programs, it is wubi. Otherwise, it is a separate installation21:50
Porysso what time does 11.04 come out?22:05
charlie-tcaanytime on April 28 in the UTC timezone22:06
drcYou know...one of the first things I do/did on install (of any distro) was change the theme to something i'm familiar with...never gave greybird/greybird a chance...it's kinda nice, with the appropriate desktop background.22:32
KM0201what would be a reason i can't right click my desktop?23:39
KM0201and get any menu, etc.23:39
drcSettings>Desktop>Menus>Show applications menu....23:43
