[for 4.6] copy '/etc/xdg/menus/xfce-applications.menu to '~/.config/xdg/menus' and customize it. [16:58] 2. [for 4.6] You can also create desktop entries in '~/.local/share/applications' to override the existing applications (change or hide) or add new ones. [16:58] 3. http://wiki.xfce.org/howto/customize-menu [16:59] im reading that wiki but it doesnt make any sense [16:59] Souperman: you can copy the .desktop files from /usr/share/applications to ~/.local/share/applications [16:59] charlie-tca: please explain... installs it in a fresh xubuntu (10.10 and 11.04) install. When I try to delete it, it says I must remove the Software Center as well. [17:00] yup [17:00] then you can add software center back again. [17:00] hey all [17:00] think i just had a kernal panic, and xubuntu crashed (11.04) whie moving windows between workstations, how can i debug this? [17:00] the way the dependencies are set up, it is required to be removed with xubuntu- something [17:01] but you can install Software Center without reinstalling xubuntu-desktop [17:01] figured i may as well help to debug it and report it if it's a bug... i was on xubuntu 10.10 and upgraded to xfce 4.8(?) prior to going to 11.04 [17:01] charlie-tca, thanks [17:01] It will not be a valid bug, since 4.8 is not supported on Xubuntu 10.10 [17:01] greenmang0: You are welcome [17:02] hunger__: it is invalid [17:02] charlie, gotcha, i'm thinking i should just do a fresh install of xubuntu, who knows what i've b0rked in the years of tinkering w/ this install :D [17:03] I agree with that [17:03] charlie-tca: nah..I'll leave it (I was just wondering about your statement " Xubuntu really doesn't install it"...Heck, I still have Totem on the machine because removing it plays heck with trying to re-assign "open with" in Thunar :( [17:03] ^ [17:03] drc: not meant for software center, meant for any menu editor in xubuntu since about 8.04 [17:04] thats why im trying to make totem work nice whit the screensavers [17:04] I use parole for movies, before that I used vlc, since totem has too many issues to play nice [17:05] ok new question im using xfce is there a difference in it and gnome and can i use programs universally between the two [17:05] VLC here [17:05] mitchell: yes, there is difference. they are two different desktop environments [17:05] !de [17:05] In den meisten ubuntu-Kanälen wird nur Englisch gesprochen. [17:07] Souperman: edit the file now and add XFCE to it where it says "only in gnome" [17:07] or remove the only in .... line [17:08] oooo... lol i was just reading it and i saw that option XD [17:08] heh [17:08] what about programs i find online that are advertised for gnome and dont mention xfce [17:08] It is not as easy as Ubuntu, but a lot more fun [17:08] mitchell: if they are not in the official repositories, it is a guess. [17:09] ok thanks [17:09] I would not recommend installing them. Please check first to see if it is packaged for Ubuntu repositories [17:09] okay, good, but i still have the other screensaver app showing up [17:09] ok [17:10] Did you remove xscreensaver? [17:10] well no [17:10] then it should show up [17:10] so i can remove it whitout problems rite [17:10] sudo apt-get purge xscreensaver will remove it, then a logout/login will get rid of the menu entries for it [17:11] no [17:11] purge or auto-remove? [17:11] sudo apt-get remove --purge xscreensaver [17:11] Xubuntu does not include the gnome-screensaver because it doesn't work well for us [17:11] the remove --purge == purge [17:11] now, new changes to apt-get [17:11] right [17:12] hey, knome ! [17:12] hey charlie-tca [17:12] 1 day to Xubuntu 11.04 release! [17:12] i suppose the changes are good, as long as they don't start throwing in too many aliases [17:12] mm-hmm [17:12] charlie-tca, but xubuntu comes whit totem wich does not work well whit xscreensaver [17:12] I haven't had any issues with just using purge. It seems to work the same [17:13] heh [17:13] nothing really works well with totem, too. That's why we moved to parole [17:13] parole? [17:16] Souperman, please watch your language, we try to keep the channel family-friendly [17:16] oh, sorry, i apologize [17:16] no problem [17:16] :( there is no parole for 10.04 [17:17] really? [17:17] yes, apt-get doesnt find it [17:17] yup [17:17] it wasn't available until 10.10 [17:17] right... [17:17] I used VLC in 10.40 [17:18] 10.04 [17:18] 10.40? is that a space-age xubuntu? [17:18] i have it to but it doesnt integrates well whit open whit... options [17:18] does it have blue or some other color wallpaper? [17:18] that's even better than 10.04! [17:23] zenrox: to be clear, Xubuntu 11.04 can use the menu editors again. [17:23] We been waiting a long time to get that back in Xfce [17:24] but that dont have a native one ?? [17:24] nope [17:24] looks like i am going to have to learn programming [17:24] and write one [17:24] since the menus are based on freedesktop.org standards/guides, they figured alacarte was good [17:24] I don't remember if they have one planned for 4.10 [17:25] i hope thay do [17:25] it would make editing menus so much nicer [17:25] the whole xfce interface could benefit a lot whit good customization options [17:26] options exist, they are just hard to find, sometimes [17:26] or you forget whare thay are [17:29] i happend to fine another menu editor gmenu-simple-editor [17:30] tho it dont let you creat new entrys [17:31] question, xubuntu 11.04 will come whit that awful tablet interface ubuntu will come whit too? [17:31] Removed gnumeric. The icon is still there. [17:31] Souperman, no [17:31] thanks gods [17:32] Souperman, that other one your talking about = unity [17:33] yes unity, i mean if you have a tablet pc go for it, but for a desktop? [17:33] it isn't that bad, if they got compiz less-crashy [17:34] but i generally like xfce more [17:34] ^ [17:35] i have liked xfce more since like 2000's [17:35] XD [17:35] ArisVer: normally needs a logout/login to fix the menu after removign [17:36] I spent the last couple of days looking/playing a...all...t/with Unity...it's gotten much better...stable...NO crashes at all...Figured out most most of what I needed to know to make it work (and it does work as advertised). But decided that Unity was not for me. [17:37] Thank u charlie. [17:37] You are welcome [17:37] drc: overall, though, the environment does work. [17:37] It will evolve in Ocelot, too. [17:38] charlie-tca: Absolutely...and works well, too [17:38] as in shore up? [17:38] xfce is too smooth, i had to put KDE to this desktop for exitement :G [17:39] * drc thinks Sysi is just a hedonist at heart [17:39] Sysi, are you sure you don't have any other self-desctructive thoughts than installing kde? [17:39] i maybe will try gnome3 too.. [17:40] !wake for Sysi [17:40] Error: I am only a bot, please don't think I'm intelligent :) [17:41] i'm kinda useless for LoCo since i don't use basic ubuntu, but it just sucks :/ [17:41] kde is like the most awful gui since vista [17:41] Sysi: just be aware, normally removing gnome3 requires a complete reinstall [17:42] sounds like kde4.0 [17:42] :P [17:42] charlie-tca: with unity or with anything? [17:42] Sysi: If you want to look at gnome3, try the Fedora15beta liveCD [17:42] everything sucks quite badly with default setup, xfce is easiest to set up, kde has more options but it still lacks some [17:42] Once you install gnome3 from the ppa, it can not be removed properly [17:43] There is no way yet to get rid of gnome3, and it does take over the OS. [17:44] drc: i maybe will update to F15 completely, netbook stays xubuntu natty as it's the best [17:45] i *could* test if jockey works properly on natty before it.. [17:45] * drc may be a heretic, but he thinks he likes gnome3 better than Unity, although Unity is more polished. [17:48] choices are good [17:48] i haven't tried unity yet, but if there is something i don't like is options being taken from me, thats why i hated so much the win7 interface [17:49] and the ff4 using that stupid orange menu, and why i will never use chrome [17:52] Logged out , the icon is there. Restarted , the icon is there. Btw, thanks for mentioning the gsynaptics before. Exactly what i needed. [17:53] is Xubuntu 11.04 on schedule? :D [17:53] I am looking forward to using it on an older PC of mine [17:54] Can you tell me the way to remove the icon manually? [17:54] ArisVer, i had to edit the menu a few moments ago, check ~/.local/share/applications and see if there is a mention to gnumeric, if there is one delete it [17:55] also http://wiki.xfce.org/howto/customize-menu [17:55] ArisVer, or check /usr/local/applications [17:56] i mean /usr/local/share/applications [17:57] None there for Souperman. And none for zerox. I do not see an applications folder anywhere. [17:57] its hidden [17:57] thats why it has a dot [17:58] I Ctrl+H. [17:58] then there has to be [17:58] .local [17:58] then share then applications [17:59] do thunar ~/.local/share/applications [18:00] In .local i have 4 folders. notes, totem, vinagre, webkit. [18:00] That is .local/share [18:01] and on /usr/local/share/applications [18:02] oh no! is /usr/share/applications [18:03] It is in user/share/applications. I see many icons. Delete Gnumeric? [18:03] i think thats what you want to do yes, to be safe just move it somewhere else so you can restore it if things go bad [18:04] I install again if i need it. Highly doubt this . [18:05] charlie-tca [18:06] ArisVer, you did sudo apt-get purge gnumeric [18:06] ? [18:06] Yes. [18:06] yup, delete it then [18:06] there, he knows [18:07] About gsynaptics. When i restarted , the touchpad was enabled again. [18:07] (The icon went back to Ubuntu database) [18:12] In usr/share/applications i see icon 'Remote Desktop Viewer' twice. Have not drink. [18:12] hello out there [18:14] There's no one here but us grues.... [18:15] hello out there [18:16] Hello [18:16] There's no one here but us grues...and we're getting closer. I restarted and the touchpad tapping was enabled again. How/where fix? [18:32] ArisVer: I personally don't know your answer, I'd start here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=493758 [18:33] I'm reading 241807 now [18:34] Ok, the URL I gave is a How-To, rather than a "I have a problem" though :) [18:35] drc, your link looks better, no answer on the other one. [18:37] But before i continue, how to i make the letters bigger in mozilla? I set at Edit-->Preferences-->Content increased number and the letters stayed the same. I'm on Ubuntu machine now. [18:37] Ctrl+plus key [18:38] Ctrl++ bigger, Ctrl+- smaller [18:38] Better and quicker!!! [18:43] I post for Xubuntu. I gey /usr/share/themes/NOX/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:233: Murrine configuration option "gradients" is no longer supported and will be ignored. In terminal after a sudo mousepad command. I think i saw this while doing some updating. [18:43] I get... [18:44] Thats a backround screen, right? It was replaced yestarday. [18:44] ArisVer: not a problem, that is just an advisory message [18:48] drc, are you in that page? [18:49] what page? [18:49] The one you post a link to. [18:49] I am now :) [18:50] In the second square, editing xorg.conf, i have nothing listed there. [18:50] Just an empty white page. [18:51] ArisVer: Usually that means that X is doing a good job of figuring out what it needs without one. You can just make one, and it will add what you put there to the X startup. [18:51] Ok. [18:52] I expected to find at least something in from the setup. [18:53] So did I, but X has come a long way since the early days, and now can usually figure out what it needs without your interference :) [18:54] Is it good to save the file? as a backup? [18:54] I ALWAYS save a copy of any config file that I edit. [18:55] Usually same name.ORIGINAL or name.DTG [18:56] Need to get some cdrs...or with a usb on another hd. [18:58] Are u still in that page? [18:58] I have 1@160gig HDD(internal), 1@500gig USB HDD (for video/audio), 1@40gig USB HDD (data archive)and 2@8gig USBsticks (working saves). I rarely use cd/dvd's anymore, unless I want triple backup [18:59] yes [18:59] count 6 boxes. ServerLayout [19:00] yes [19:00] I have 4 hds, internal, a 250, a 30 a 5 and a ONEGB ;) MIght install a dvdrw instead of the 1GB. [19:01] Do i copy all the lines in xorg? [19:02] ArisVer: AS I said, I am not a X or synaptics expert, I just found that page as a start for your problem. Maybe someone that has more knowledge of X can help [19:02] It says adding a line, but only one line , would it make sense? [19:02] I thought you were. Anyways you must be a lot better than i. [19:03] It looks like it's assuming you already have a xorg.conf [19:03] what is your video card? [19:04] I'm not a gamer, used to play 10 years ago. A 32MB nVidia. [19:04] Are you using the nvidia proprietar drive ? [19:05] driver, that is [19:06] Yes, this is my main rig, updated drivers from Administration-->Additional drivers, Ubuntu 10.10 [19:06] It did made difference. [19:08] I also have an external usb 40GB hd, mainly for backup. And a 4GB usb stick. Theses and the laptop were my brothers , and he did not want them anymore. Lucky me. [19:11] ok, then if you don't have a xorg.conf already, then maybe you can make one with nvidia-config "sudo nvidia-xconfig" This should give you a basic xorg.conf tailored to your system. Read the resulting xorg.conf and then see what you need to modify to solve your touchpad problem. [19:15] Some more info, even though it's off topic, sorry guys, but you may find this interesting, (also a blank page for ubuntu), i used computers from 1994 until 2002. Then i had a loong break. This year i started again, because i'm bored doing nothing, and because it's fun and useful. [19:16] Lunchtime !!!! bbl [19:50] Well, i just finished the tutorial, it looks a bit complex, covers everything for the touchpad, and it's a trial to find the settings you like. But not right now, i'll have an early night tonight. [19:55] So, goodnight to all and fairwell, thank you for your support. [20:32] what are the advantages to ubuntu vs xubuntu [20:34] xubuntu has nicer colors [20:34] they're different, xubuntu may lack something but it uses less ram [20:35] xubuntu is lighter; needs less ram, less hard disk, less cpu [20:35] xubuntu does not have to have a hardware video driver to look good [20:35] so xubuntu runs faster [20:35] No, I did not say that [20:36] what is it missing to make it lighter [20:36] gnome [20:36] it's also more customizable (my favorite thing about it, I have 3 clocks in my panel, with 3 time zones!) [20:36] I run Orage world clock, with 18 time zones, as a small panel on every workspace [20:37] mitchell: why should it be missing anything? [20:37] I have not found anything I can't do with Xubuntu that I can do in Ubuntu [20:37] how is it lighter without missing something [20:37] xfce is not gnome [20:38] it's different, try [20:38] you can have both desktops [20:39] right im running xubuntu on my windows laptop and love it havent used windows in months just wondering what else there is and if its better [20:39] Unlike Windows, where you have a single operating system. linux has many to choose from. The major desktops in linux are KDE, Gnome, and Xfce. [20:39] i started with xubuntu because i had too little ram, i got more and was disappointed with gnome [20:40] They are different applications and programs to do the same thing. [20:41] I started with Ubuntu, and then tried Xubuntu. Xubuntu allows me more opportunity to configure it the way I want to. [20:41] i have a 1.6 ghz atom processor 1 gb ram and 250 gb hd what os should i use i dont care about appearance only speed and variety of programs [20:42] I don't know how much difference in speed you would see. [20:42] if you like xubuntu, just use it [20:43] you can install ubuntu-desktop if you want and login to that [20:43] ok thanks [20:45] You are using a virtualbox now, just create a second one and try Ubuntu on it's own [20:46] or, is that a wubi installation? [21:21] hallo [21:21] is there anybody should help me with wireless problem? [21:21] !hi | Sakuragno [21:21] Sakuragno: Hi!, Welcome to #xubuntu! Feel free to ask questions and help people out. The channel guidelines are at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/Guidelines. Enjoy your stay! [21:42] i guess he dint what his wifi fixed [21:44] i think its a wubi installation it is a separate partition [21:44] or it fixed itself automagically [21:44] ive never used a virtual machine before i have one just never messed with it [21:50] mitchell: if it is has an entry in windows add/remove programs, it is wubi. Otherwise, it is a separate installation [22:05] so what time does 11.04 come out? [22:06] anytime on April 28 in the UTC timezone [22:32] You know...one of the first things I do/did on install (of any distro) was change the theme to something i'm familiar with...never gave greybird/greybird a chance...it's kinda nice, with the appropriate desktop background. [23:39] what would be a reason i can't right click my desktop? [23:39] and get any menu, etc. [23:43] Settings>Desktop>Menus>Show applications menu.... [23:43] This checked?
