Mitchell-92Hey... anyone here? I had a question... what are the benefits of unity over gnome 3?03:23
Mitchell-92hey hyperair ... what are the benefits of unity over gnome 3?03:24
hyperairMitchell-92: it looks nice and pretty, and it uses compiz.03:25
Mitchell-92How is the functionality compared to gnome 3, and the stability?03:25
RAOFIndicators are pretty cool; the global menu and undecorated maximised windows gains quite a lot of extra vertical space.03:25
Mitchell-92Does it have things like those instant message indicators on the bottom of the screen that go away, like gnome 3 has?03:25
hyperairfunctionality wise, i haven't tried gnome303:26
hyperairi mean it's very much better than gnome shell from some months ago03:26
Mitchell-92Is the performance any slower? I plan on installing it on my netbook which was previously running mint.03:27
hyperairMitchell-92: nah, performance is just fine03:27
hyperairthe same as ol compiz.03:27
Mitchell-92ok03:27
Mitchell-92Will it run fast on a dual core atom @ 1.6Ghz with 2GB of RAM and 128MB Intel graphics?03:28
RAOFYes.03:29
hyperairMitchell-92: oh i should probably mention, unity leaks memory.03:29
Mitchell-92Okay. Will that be fixed?03:29
hyperairMitchell-92: like almost every other application that has been touched by canonical03:29
Mitchell-92Ok.03:29
hyperairask smspillaz03:29
RAOFParticularly: if you've tried the Netbook edition in 10.10, you'll find Unity *substantially* snappier.03:29
Mitchell-92So the Netbook edition of 10.10 is better than the one that's coming out tomorrow?03:30
Mitchell-92RAOF: what time tomorrow will the new version come out?03:33
RAOFNo; the netbook edition of 10.10 is substantially worse than the one thats' coming out tomorrow :)03:33
Mitchell-92ok03:34
RAOFMitchell-92: Some time! :)03:34
Mitchell-92Like when.. morning?03:34
RAOFWhen everything's ready.03:34
Mitchell-92Okay.03:35
Mitchell-92I have another laptop running Windows 7, I like to hook it up to the HD TV and use it in bed with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, should I be able to do that with 11.04?03:35
RAOFYes.03:35
Mitchell-92Ok. I've gotta go now... it's getting late.03:36
Mitchell-92Bye.03:36
hyperairRAOF: something in unity is capturing ctrl+alt+r, but i can't figure out what. do you know what it is?04:12
hyperairit's really annoying since i use it for emacs =\04:12
spikebthat's far too simple to be an emacs keybinding!04:50

kenvandinetedg, i haven't seen that14:51
kenvandinetedg, does it still work?14:51
tedgkenvandine, No, stops there for ever and ever14:52
tedgIt's like it's loading dbusmenu twice.14:53
kenvandineinteresting14:54
kenvandineit has to be related to the quicklists and libunity14:54
kenvandinethat is the only thing that uses GI14:54
tedgHmm it must be that I branched dbusmenu.14:54
kenvandinehaha !14:54
tedgSo they're linked to a different version.14:55
tedgThat's very annoying.14:55
kenvandineindeed :)14:55
* kenvandine does the not a bug dance14:55
tedgIt basically means that all the effort that the Debian people have put into having libraries parallel installable for different version is totally destroyed by GObject introspection.14:56
kenvandinetalk about annoying, 4:30pm yesterday i found that facebook "fixed" the default set of permissions set by apps using the graph API14:56

Elie-TucanHi everyone, could someone point me to the mono icons guidelines please, I can't find them ?15:04
kamstruptedg: well, it means that two incompatible versions of libs needs to have their own distinct .gir files15:06
tedgkamstrup, Well, not really.  Since the dbusmenu on is pulling in libdbusmenu.4 and the libunity one is pulling in libdbusmenu.315:07
tedgkamstrup, So the conflict is traveling through libunity15:07
tedgchaotic, ^15:08
kamstruptedg: ah, that way around15:08
tedgchaotic, On icons15:08
tedgkamstrup, The problem basically comes from libraries linking to libraries.  I'm not sure of a clean way to solve it.15:09
tedgkamstrup, Seems like it'd almost need to be solved in the linker15:10
tedgkamstrup, Or at least there should be a warning ther.15:10
kamstruptedg: not even sure how the linker would resolve this... the only thing that makes sense is to terminate the process with some clear warning15:12
tedgkamstrup, Sorry, not linker, loader15:13
tedgRuntime detection and segfault maybe.  Then we'd get an apport backtrace at least.15:13
kamstruptedg: ah right - the typelib loader could detect this, but still the only meaningful action is to exit(ESYSTEMB0RKED)15:14
tedgkamstrup, I actually wasn't thinking typelib loader level.  Like kernel level.  So even people who used C to bring them both in...15:15
tedgkamstrup, It'd make errors with extensions and the such show up as well.15:15
kamstruptedg: hmm, I guess this wont fly in general as there is nothing stopping for writing some "clever" code that could work with two different ABI versions of the same lib figuring it out at runtime. In fact I am willing to bet that there is some proprietary code out there that does this already15:18
tedgkamstrup, I'm willing to break proprietary code ;-)15:19
tedgkamstrup, Yeah, I think it'd have to be a warning.15:19
tedgkamstrup, Have you messed with PyGI much?  I'm getting a weird error looking at El Loco...15:20
kamstruptedg: some messing around yes :-)15:21
tedgkamstrup, It seems to not be subclassing the GTK objects.  Like trying to call a GtkContainer function on a GtkWindow.15:21
tedgkamstrup, That should happen automagically, right?15:21
rightsideHi, is it true, that Unity Launcher can't appear on the right side?15:21
kamstruptedg: right, my understanding is that this should just work15:23
AndreaAzzaroneHappy Release Day! :)15:24

kamstruprightside: i'm afraid so15:26
AndreaAzzaronekamstrup, My work is nothing compared to your! :)15:27
rightsideBad thing, I've to use classic Ubuntu until there will be a solution.15:27
akshatjThe legendary man AndreaAzzarone is here! :D15:27
kamstruptedg: a GtkWindow *is* a GtkContainer, so calling container ftcs on a window shouldn't be a problem..?15:27
rsajdokkaleo: I think I solved this problem :)15:29
AndreaAzzaroneakshatj, I've been here a long time :)15:29
kaleorsajdok: ah?15:29
kaleorsajdok: how? :)15:29
tedgkamstrup, http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/600294/15:29
tedgkamstrup, What's weird is that it's a "Window" vs. a "Gtk.Container"  -- I'm not sure why one has the "Gtk" and the other doesn't.15:30
kamstruptedg: so you're reimplementing unity in PyGI? ;-)15:30
tedgkamstrup, No, trying to get seiflotfy's El Loco to run.  It needed libchamplaingtk bindings that weren't available, so I thought it'd be easier to go the PyGI route and improve it overall.... not going well :-(15:31
rsajdokkaleo: QString::compare(u2dTr("Trash"), windowName, Qt::CaseSensitive);15:32
rsajdokkaleo: I works in polish language15:32
kamstruptedg: El Loco... is that some new hawtnes that has escaped my eyes?15:33
tedgkamstrup, Oh, man, it's CRAZY.  It's infact so crazy it's in the name!15:34

kaleorsajdok: u2dTr will use the translations from Unity 2D15:37
kaleorsajdok: wereas the name of the window is coming from Nautilus15:37
kaleorsajdok: it works in Polish probably because 1) Unity 2D happens to be translated in Polish 2) The translations in Unity 2D and Nautilus happen to be matching15:38
seiflotfytedg, i am very disapointed u missed on ellocco15:38
seiflotfyi mean kamstrup î am disapointed in you15:38
seiflotfyhow could you miss ellocco15:38
kaleorsajdok: u2dTr accepts a second parameter which is the translation domain15:39
seiflotfykamstrup, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yryv4wB4lW415:39
kaleorsajdok: Nautilus has: configure.in:GETTEXT_PACKAGE=nautilus15:40
kaleorsajdok: so, QString::compare(u2dTr("Trash", "nautilus"), windowName, Qt::CaseSensitive); would be more reliable15:40
rsajdokkaleo: Well, but Why in another place in code this is not used, empty->setText(u2dTr("Empty Trash"));15:45
kaleorsajdok: because in that case "Empty Trash" is a string specific to Unity 2D, that is defined in and for Unity 2D15:46
kaleorsajdok: your case is extremely special15:46
rsajdokkaleo: ok, now I understand :)15:47

didrocksand the proprieratery driver21:42
OverTheHillAndFahm.. but it kind of worked before i uninstalled unity-2d. exept that choosing Ubuntu in loginscreen gave both Unity-2d and 3d in ovelay21:43
didrockslook at bug #72874521:43
ubot5Launchpad bug 728745 in nux (Ubuntu) "[nvidia, 7300, 7400] display freeze when using unity desktop" [High,Fix released] https://launchpad.net/bugs/72874521:43
didrocksall the description, the why, the workaround is in here21:43
OverTheHillAndFacan i unblacklist it to test21:44
OverTheHillAndFaok21:44
didrocksOverTheHillAndFa: it's in the bug21:44
didrocksI added an env variable for that21:44
didrocksand explained how to do this21:44
didrockssome people are using the workaround + the current nvidia driver it seems21:44
OverTheHillAndFathe freezing behavour i experienced before. but now there was a older driver (173) present in the proprietary driver list i enabled that and everything seemed to work fine. exep as mentioned both 2d-and 3d got loaded simultaeous21:47
didrocksOverTheHillAndFa: right, but most of people are enabling the 270 driver, hence the blacklist. The fix should go in the 270 driver as well to prevent people enabling that21:49
didrocksOverTheHillAndFa: did you try my workaround to enable the check and not fallback?21:49
didrocksthen choose the "ubuntu" session21:49
didrocksit shouldn't launch unity-2d21:50
OverTheHillAndFaacually i did not understand or find the workaround. a little greek to me :p21:50
didrockswhat didn't you understand the comment?21:51

ubot5Ubuntu bug 728745 in nux (Ubuntu) "[nvidia, 7300, 7400] display freeze when using unity desktop" [High,Fix released]21:52
didrocks" you can set UNITY_FORCE_START=1 in /etc/environment to bypass the detection."21:52
OverTheHillAndFais down at the comment fields21:52
didrockswell, I pointed the bug so that you read it :)21:52
OverTheHillAndFagreat21:52
OverTheHillAndFathanks ill try that21:52
nhainesdidrocks: it *is* a bit of a chore to go through all the "me too!"s and the technical stuff.  :)21:52
didrocksthat should work if you ensure to use the "ubuntu" session21:52
didrocksnhaines: yeah, I know, but when someone point the right bug report, making the effort to read it is a first step ;)21:53
didrocksstill hope that nvidia didn't recommend the 270 driver for those cards…21:53
OverTheHillAndFaill try to logout/login now to see21:54
nhainesdidrocks: I'm not saying he shouldn't try, just that it'd be pretty easy for a non-technical user to miss your comment among all the others.21:55
nhainesOverTheHillAndFa: good luck!  :)21:55
OverTheHillAndFatnx21:55
didrocksnhaines: that one should be maybe somewhere on askubuntu.com, right21:55

OverTheHillAndFaok :)21:56
OverTheHillAndFaworks21:56
didrocksOverTheHillAndFa: so? :-)21:56

OverTheHillAndFanot super responsive though :P21:57
didrocksnot sure if I can do both21:57
didrocksOverTheHillAndFa: yeah, this is the hardware/driver issue…21:58

didrocksbut still better than with 270 where it freezes at login21:58
nhainesdidrocks: lol21:58

didrocksOverTheHillAndFa: I'm curious, how slow is it? still usable?22:05
OverTheHillAndFahi.. yes it is usable22:11
OverTheHillAndFasometimes it is fast some times slower22:11
OverTheHillAndFabut not hoplessly22:11
OverTheHillAndFai have a lenovo 300 n20022:14
OverTheHillAndFa3000 n20022:14
didrocksOverTheHillAndFa: ok, nice to know, we'll probably discuss if we can manually remove the "270" compatibility or discuss with nvidia for that22:15
OverTheHillAndFai have not done a complete reboot either.just logged out/in. maybe it help further to do a complete reboot22:15
OverTheHillAndFa?22:15
didrocksso that the user can shoot into their feet :)22:15
didrocksOverTheHillAndFa: it's fine, logout/login is enough :)22:16
OverTheHillAndFaok22:16
OverTheHillAndFa6-7 months ago in 10.10 i installed the newest driver from nvidia. probably a little older version than the 270 out now. it worked perfect until a kernel update from canonical. so i guess nvidia have done something with the very latest drivers that fck-up 7300 support22:19
OverTheHillAndFai dont know a little over my head :P22:19
didrocksOverTheHillAndFa: right, that's why we need to discuss with them first :-)22:20
OverTheHillAndFai see. good luck to you. unity is great and here to stay. you do fine work. thanks for the help :o)22:21
didrocksyou're really welcome OverTheHillAndFa :-)22:21

dexter_hi22:41
dexter_i'm just curious, it looks like you guys are creating a new DE called unity, and i read in wikipedia you guys are gonna migrate from x windows. will you still have that useful middle mouse button click?22:42
dexter_the one where you just select and middle click on any text field you wish to paste rather than using right click then menu or ctrl+c, select then ctrl+v22:44
roninveracityI am very impressed by the new Unity GUI--it's a bold move.  However, >    there is one glaring oversight, from the point of view of someone >    who uses Ubuntu for professional programming work.  I frequently >    want to have more than a dozen emacs windows open as I'm writing >    code.  In classic Ubuntu, I could easily choose which one I want >    from the name of the file in the bottom task bar, but this does not >    22:47
nhainesI agree, that's a glaring issue, unfortunately.  Fortunately it may just be an edge case.22:51
jamaltaif a bug reported against unity is actually in the nux codebase, should i add nux to the project?23:26
jamaltaadd to the bug* ... not project sorry23:26
jamaltaWell, I went ahead and added nux, hope that is ok :)23:39
