youngpatrickAnybody know how to fix the Realtek lan card problem ???02:37
DarthFrogyoungpatrick: Do you always ask questions in stereo?02:37
amason_perhaps if you describe the problem you are having and the steps you have performed to debug the issue so far, we may be able to help02:37
youngpatrickNo...the Realtek Giga lan card RTL8168 in HPDM1-Z laptop02:38
youngpatrickI have downloaded the lan card from realtek web-site and compiled it. the module is OK.. But the problem is my router netgear wndr3700 cannot detect the lan card as Gigabit version02:40
amason_youngpatrick: does your router have gigabit ethernet ports ?02:40
youngpatrickmy router have gigabit ethernet ports.. that is when the gigabit lan card plugged-in,,, the signal lamp should blink in green color...But the laptop gigabit lan card which the router send the signal lamp color in amber...That means the router detect it as 100Mbps not in 1000Mbps.02:43
amason_and does your computer detect the nic as gigabit ?02:43
youngpatrickI use the default config as auto eth0 and auto lo in /etc/netwok/interfaces....however, i also change the interfaces consig in static Ip address for my laptop.... but it still not work.02:46
amason_you didn't answer my question though02:48
amason_does the computer see it as a gigabit device02:48
youngpatricklspci -v.... it is the gigabit device confirmed02:49
amason_erm that just confirms the name of the module02:49
amason_use ethtool to query the device02:50
amason_and see if it knows it's a gigabit device02:50
amason_actually can you pastebin the output of that02:51
youngpatrickI have tried ethtool to forece the device in full duplex and 1000mbps,,,autoneg on....It does not work....Other thing is the router signal lamp blink in green color in the first few seconds after I have plugged the lan cable from the laptop....after the few seconds, it change the signal color in amber !!!!!02:52
youngpatrickSorry, I am using my desktop to chat and my laptop.... I cannot pastebiin the output02:53
youngpatrickMoreover, I also blacklisted the modules RTL8169....lsmod | grep r81*... the output modules said as r8168 <--loading the correct one from the system02:57
youngpatrickAny idea ???03:02

simion314if you have space on the HDD i would  install the new version in other partition and test it,i am now runing both 11.04 and 10.10 , so for example the gmail plasmoid is not working in 11.04, flash will crash on full screen with effects on on the new version , so things can go wrong in some machines/drivers12:49

Chris_Hsimion314: I am using KDE 4.6.2 (the same version which natty uses) on Kubuntu 10.10 machine and both Flash and gmail-plasmoid work fine12:52
Chris_HI guess I should test drive it first12:52
simion314Chris_H: the drivers cause the problems in flash.i guess the open source driver was updated in this version, i do not tried the ati driver because it seems to make Opera slower12:53
simion314Chris_H: this time i will try to not install gnome apps, maybe GTK only(without gnome dependencies) if i realy need it12:54
Mad_Dudguys, do you know any widget, which behaves as notepad, that pops out from taskbar after clicking icon?12:55

Chris_HYou can also try xrender compositing instead of openGL, simion31413:00

arpanLinkmaster: iirc, the upgrade will disable any third party repo while upgrading13:26
arpanLinkmaster: once the upgrade is finished, you can re-enable them13:27
LinkmasterAh. What about through konsole? Since I prefer 'apt-get' to pretty much everything13:27

Bauldrick[13:59:27] <Bauldrick> I have a problem --- I can only get into system if I boot into recovery and then > resume boot - that gives me a command prompt at which point I login and issue startx - If I try to select normal 2.35.8 at grub (or whatever # it is) I get black screen and monitor actually turns off...14:40

BauldrickBluesKaj: additional drivers? there are non to install - I have tried 'repair packages' both from recovery menu and tried 'repair broken system' from disc - same with grub... maybe I shouldn't have turned PC off last night !!! :(14:48

kaliband now my vm doesn't start anymore14:59
Bauldrickactually.... thinking about this..... kubuntu is on an ntfs partition that was resized , and someone did boot into windows last night, and that may possibly have done something???14:59
Linkmaster^Very possibly15:00
kalibLinkmaster, :/15:00
LinkmasterSee if you can load a LiveCD, and see if you can access the Kubuntu inside the VM15:00

Bauldrickbut more importantly, how do i fix it!15:01
Linkmaster'possibly' implies that it could be a reason. It gives us a place to start and to troublshoot from there15:01

tdnnotslad, yeah, nepomuk is really annoying :(15:28
tdnnotslad, I would like to just remove ALL of it. But it does not seem possible.15:28

yofelmost annoying part is that if I disable it in system settings I get a message every login that it's disabled...15:29
James147yofel: really? on my netbook it stops indexing (and thus stops draining power) when my laptop isnt chanrging15:30
notsladtdn: when Nepomuk comes of age it will be amazing, though :^)15:30
James147and from 4.6 i havent had a problem with nepomuk at all :s15:31
yofelstrigi stops yes, but not nepomukfilewatch15:31
BluesKajheh, I have nepomuk turned off in service manager ..absolutely no use for it ...no databases etc so no need15:32
notsladyofel: yeah.. I was kind've lumping them both into the same category... functionally, I need strigi and nepomuk both to be working fast and light before it makes a significant impact on my desktop experience15:32
yofelwell, you could use nepomuk for tagging for example without strigi, but I have practically no need for strigi, and I don't use nepomuk enough either to justify the resources it takes15:33

bobbob1016I can't seem to enable Compiz with Window Decorations, after a fresh (with the same /home) Narty install.  I installed Fusion Icon, Emerald, and Compiz.  Compiz works (cube rotate and everything), but Decorations don't work.  Anyone having the same issue?15:59
SarenOK, I'll toss it out.16:01
SarenKubuntu starts, but defaults to netbook remix on my 10.1''16:01
SarenI want a regular desktop.16:02
BluesKajcube rotate works without compiz on maverick and natty, bobbob1016 for most desktop effects compiz is nol onger needed.16:02
SarenI tried apt-get install kubuntu-desktop, but to no effect. Loginscreen gives me only "KDE Plasma WOrkspace" as an option.16:02
yofelSaren: System settings -> workspace behaviour -> workspace16:02
yofelthere you can change the workspace type16:02
SarenTa very much, trying it now.16:02
yofelthe default depends on the screen size as you noticed ;)16:02
bobbob1016BluesKaj: That was just an example I used to show Compiz was working.  I don't really like kwin, can't seem to find a way to get something like "scale" and can't disable the glow, and things like that.  I have compiz setup how I like, and I want to keep it that way.  Do you know what would be preventing window decorations?16:03
SarenAwesome, thanks a million!16:04
BluesKajbobbob1016, nope , sorry I no longer bother witj compiz , so I'm way behind on the curve in there16:05
yofelbobbob1016: the active window glow? That's not kwin but oxygen16:06
bobbob1016BluesKaj: I just found "present windows" but can't set it to enable when I middle click my mouse. This was something I use all the time in compiz.16:06
BluesKajsome of the window decor is very flaky , bobbob1016 , even without compiz16:06
bobbob1016yofel: And where do I go to disable the glow in oxygen then?16:07
yofelsystemsettings -> workspace appearance -> window decorations -> (with oxygen selected) configure decoration -> shadows16:08
wolfjbi upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 and now nspluginwrapper gives a segfault during installation and flashplugin_installer won't install because of that. this is on 64bit version. any workarounds?16:15
bobbob1016yofel: One more question, do you know how I can set "present windows" to enable when I middle-click?16:15
yofelhm... let me look around a bit16:16
evdveldewolfjb: same here16:19
wolfjbhrmm16:20
BluesKajmaybe remove the present nspluginwrapper and try to reinstall but I haven't come across any requirement for that app on my 64bit system16:21
wolfjbI've removed and purged it and reinstalled it all with the same failure16:22
yofelbobbob1016: can't find that either, I personally use a screen edge to activate that16:22
wolfjbI was thinking about downgrading it to 10.10 version16:22
BluesKajjust purge reinstall flashplugin-installer, don't think you need the nspluginwrapper16:23
bobbob1016yofel: Yeah, but I find screen-edges very inconvient.  I prefer pressing a button, since I more or less frequently hit the edges by mistake.16:25
wolfjbBluesKaj: flashplugin-installer depends on nspluginwrapper >=0.9.91.4-2, ia32-libs >=2.2ubuntu1816:26
wolfjbavailable nspluginwrapper is 1.2.2-0ubuntu9 and ia32-libs is 20090808ubuntu1316:29

bobbob1016yofel: So, kwin just crashed on me.  Crashed me to login.  Not sure if I have compositing on or not, I have an nvidia card.  It also disabled my second screen.  Which I enabled through nvidia-settings.16:31
BluesKajwolfjb, whatever browser you were using , make sure the one you want is from the repos so you get the 64 bit version , that's all I can tell you16:31
yofelno idea, I haven't had a kwin crash for months, nvidia too16:31
BluesKajbobbob1016, it was probly compiz trying to load your settings :)16:32
wolfjbBluesKaj: thanks16:33
bobbob1016BluesKaj: No, they're all disabled.  I uninstalled compiz, to do a fresh install.  But either way, I *need* middle click -> present windows.  Might sound stupid, but that's the main thing I find really useful that Compiz does that Kwin can't seem to do.  I do like the idea of kwin though, having everything handled by one program is easier.16:35
bobbob1016BluesKaj, yofel: Brb, going to restart X.  Trying a seperate X session, not twinview, since I suspect that's the issue.16:35
bigbrovarI have been unable to install kubuntu natty on my hp probook 4420 laptop, livecd always hangs while loading :/16:35
BluesKajbobbob1016, well compiz has it's uses , but for most effects it's mostly redundant , unless you need special effects that kwin can't handle of course16:36
BluesKajoops too late again16:36
BluesKajbigbrovar, check out the alternate install cd16:37

bigbrovarBluesKaj: I tried that, same problem :(16:38
bigbrovarBluesKaj: the system just freezes.. at console while loading16:38
bigbrovarBluesKaj: 10.10 installs fine though no problems..16:38
BluesKajbigbrovar, did you try upgrading by sudo do-release-upgrade ?16:40
tdnHow do I stop/remove every trace of nepomuk, strigi, virtuoso, and the likes? I do not need this stuff and it hogs resources such as CPU time and I/O.16:40
bigbrovarBluesKaj: I hope to try that now, but am very skeptical, Kubuntu 11.04 did install fine doing the development circles. problem started when one morning I booted the system and got a freeze while kdm was being loaded. even recovery console gave me a freeze, then I tried loading the livecd and even that too gave me a freeze.16:42
bigbrovarBluesKaj: then I downloaded 64bit daily image, installed that and everything was fine, then system frooze again, and since no version of *buntu 111.04 (whether live or actual install) have worked on the laptop16:43
bigbrovarBluesKaj: all this while 10.10 loads fine without any issues16:43
bigbrovarBluesKaj: I have a feeling that upgrading this laptop from 10.10 would result to same thing16:44
BluesKajtdn, no need to remove it , just open system settings/startup&shutdown/service manager/nepomuk service and choose stop and apply16:44
BluesKajbigbrovar, it looks like a mystery , since Linux Suse is one of the optional OSs offered with that laptop, one would think the HW was chosen to be  more "Linux-friendly"16:47
bigbrovarBluesKaj: exactly that was what influenced my decision to get it. but tbh, never had an issue with 10.10 or 10.04 for that matter16:48
bigbrovarBluesKaj: right now am trying to google if this is a known issue, because its so had to pin down the problem16:48
BluesKajbigbrovar, well there isn't a whole lot of difference between 10.10 ands 11.04 in my experience , except perhaps kde4.616:50
paolinuxhi16:51
bigbrovarBluesKaj: yeah this might not be a case of bad freedom hating hardware, the hardware for the laptop is pretty generic .. I just hope its not an isolated hardware issue ( in which case how come 10.10 boots fine without problems at all? makes no sense to me man )16:51

laomaiwengbodom: Doesn't do anything. No error, but nothing to do.21:44
laomaiwengTells me it has 1855 packages that need upgrade though.21:45
bodomlaomaiweng: well, looks like you wasn't as lucky as me, let's try to solve it21:45
laomaiwengbodom: apt-get upgrade seems to run fine: I didn't let it proceed, but it does list all the packages it wants to upgrade.21:46
bodomlaomaiweng: you should have some logs on /var/log/dist-upgrade/21:47
laomaiwengbodom: However apt-get dist-upgrade is not happy: throws the same error as above, speaking about "openoffice.org-common : breaks: openoffice.org-dmaths (< 1:3.3.0-7) but 3.2.1 will have to be installed"21:47
James147laomaiweng: what happens if you run "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade"?21:49
bodomlaomaiweng: do you have held packages? dpkg --get-selections | grep hold21:49
laomaiwengJames147: roughly translated from french: reads packages list, builds dependency tree, reads status information, computes upgrade --> FAIL with unstatisfied dependencies for openoffice21:52
laomaiwengbodom: Doesn't return anything.21:52
bodomlaomaiweng: /etc/apt/sources.list is pointing to natty?21:53
bodomlaomaiweng: if yes, try an apt-get update just to be sure21:53
puneethello21:54
puneetanyone using reliance net connect here.....please tell me how you installed it21:55
debg_anyone know how to enable font aliasing ? I tried doing it via system-setting but it doesn't work . the fonts look bad in my laptop .21:56

katsrcdebg_: they usually take effect after you close a KDE app21:59
laomaiwengbodom: Sorry, connection problem. As I was saying, apt-get update works fine with Natty repos.21:59
katsrcdebg_: try logging in and out22:00
debg_yes, I rebooted after enabling it . But it didn't change22:00
katsrcdebg_: what settings are you using exactly?22:00
debg_it created a .fonts.conf in the home directory22:01
bodomlaomaiweng: well, so you only have to fix openoffice in some way and then you should be able to resume the upgrade process22:01
katsrcdebg_: that's probably why22:01
bodomlaomaiweng: the point is, which way :D22:01
debg_katsrc: http://paste.kde.org/39355/22:01
katsrci did a fresh install and enabled it to full without forcing DPI22:02

debg_I am using inspiron 1525 with intel graphics , Do you know if there is any proprietary driver ?22:03

bodomlaomaiweng: maybe you can try to uninstall it and then install it back later22:05
James147debg_: there are non for intel22:06
laomaiwengbodom: I'm going through logs in /var/log/dist-upgrade, and it seems openoffice is just the tip of the iceberg.22:07
laomaiwengbodom: I'm trying another do-release-upgrade to be sure I have the most recent logs.22:09
LinkmasterQuery: how do you install a *.tar.gz file that has no config in it? theres a file that shows up blue that says 'makefiles' do I simply punch 'make' then 'sudo make install'? Without configuring anything?22:09

James147jozefk: more languages more packages on the cd... there should be no difference bettween the installed versions though... and anything on the dvd you can get form the repos after you ahve installed... the only advantage is if you need to install it on a system with no internet connection23:00
jinzougeni don't HAVE to use emacs with a qwerty layout though. The point is I learned the muscle memory on dvorak.23:00

OchoZero9I don't know why this isn't color coded, it's just a little bolder.23:07
laomaiwengOchoZero9: And sudo's parent is directly init, the root of thre tree?23:09
OchoZero9yep23:09
OchoZero9the leafs are http, three of them23:09
OchoZero9apt-get's kids23:09
laomaiwengOchoZero9: Then try to `kill -TERM PID`, replacing PID with on of apt-get's children. Maybe this will help him get moving.23:11

apersonyofel⤻ nothing that I see that'd inhibit anything.  http://pastie.org/184524123:28
OchoZero9now how can I update fast?23:29
yofelOchoZero9: "fast" ? usually it's 'sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade'23:29
OchoZero9but supposedly it's using slow mirrors23:30

yofelOchoZero9: switch to a different mirror ?23:30
yofelyeah, archive.ubuntu.com will be SLOW today23:31
OchoZero9that's less than 56k23:31

OchoZero9and it was downloading at 34kbps for me too23:33
yofeluse a mirror, archive.ubuntu.com might be the most up-to-date server, but it's the slowest too usually23:34
orysand I came as far as to ubuntu@ubuntu:/boot/grub$ sudo grub-install --root-directory=/media/disk /dev/sda323:34
orys/usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR.  This is a BAD idea..23:34
orys/usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Embedding is not possible.  GRUB can only be installed in this setup by using blocklists.  However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE and their use is discouraged..23:34
orys/usr/sbin/grub-setup: error: if you really want blocklists, use --force.23:34
orysubuntu@ubuntu:/boot/grub$23:34
FloodBotK1orys: Please don't flood; use http://paste.ubuntu.com to paste; don't use Enter as punctuation.23:34
OchoZero9ohh wow, university of southflorida is the fastest one :)23:34
OchoZero9they are my neighbors23:34
oryssorry, I hoped it won't go to so much lines :-)23:34
James147orys: you on a mac?23:34
orysJames147: no, on PC, from live cd23:35
James147ir not use /dev/sda not /sdv/sdaX23:35
orys?23:35
laomaiwengorys: Yes, /dev/sda seems better than /dev/sda3.23:35
orysah, you mean I just should...23:35
orysah.23:35
orysOK.23:35
orysit's to device, not to partition.23:35
orysGood to know23:35
orysI am off to try it again ;-)23:36
orysInstallation finished. No error reported.23:36
orysmuch better.23:36
orys:-)23:36
orysok guys23:36
orysthanks for now23:36
FloodBotK1orys: Please don't flood; use http://paste.ubuntu.com to paste; don't use Enter as punctuation.23:36
orysand I am off to reboot.23:36
orysFloodBotK1: give me a break, I am just a talking man :D23:36
orys(I know that he's a bot, I am just having a laugh :P)23:37
laomaiwengorys: We'll see you later about the upgrade I guess. =P23:37
OchoZero9wow it was hours remaining. now it's only 9 minutes LOL23:37
oryslaomaiweng: I hope I will manage, but I glad that I have some backup :-)23:37
OchoZero9I bet if i was in school it would be even faster23:37
orysbrb (I hope :P)23:37
OchoZero91.3MB/s beats 0.00425MB/s,4.25KB/s23:39
oryshello again, cruel world of the IT :-)23:46
orysso: no changes ;-)23:46
orysstill, switch the computer on, there is cursor blinking in the corner, then there is no cursor blinking in the corner and that's about everything what happens.23:46
orysany ideas?23:46
orysor I got one. It was possible with mandrake to just install new one on the old one, it was installing itself without need of formatting hard drives etc... Do you think it is possible? Or it will be easier to find the source of my problems?23:47
orysoh poor james147... I don't blame him :D23:48
oryswelcome again! ;-)23:49
laomaiwengorys: Don't know what will be easier... Grub completed without error, so that's strange you don't even see Grub start.23:49
yofelwell, grub is hidden by default, so unless you tell it to show up you don't see it23:50
yofel(hidden unless you have multiple systems)23:50
orysyofel: in that case it means that the system is f*ked23:50
laomaiwengOk, I never saw it hidden, but then I always had double-boot.23:50
orysyofel: I have XP on that pc as well.23:50
laomaiwengorys: It did show up before, didn't it? If so, I guess it should also show up now.23:50
yofelorys: hm.... try to hold left shift pressed when the bios screen comes up, maybe that will show something then23:50
yofelif it still doesn't show up it's broken indeed23:51
laomaiwengDo you have qemu on the LiveCD? xD23:51
oryslaomaiweng: yes, off course.23:51
oryslaomaiweng: I don't even know what quemu is. Should I be worried? :-)23:51
orysyofel: that some idea, will try.23:51
yofelnah, qemu is vritualization23:52
yofel*virtualization23:52
laomaiwengorys: qemu is a virtual machine. You could use it to boot off your hard disk without rebooting.23:52
oryshm23:53
laomaiweng`qemu -hda /dev/sda` works well here. I never dared going past the grub screen as I'm scared of breaking things, but at least the Grub screen does show up.23:53
orysand then have system in system, and then start another one in that one, and so to the infinity. That smart.23:53
laomaiwengWell, I guess an infinite loop would require a pretty massive amount of computing power. =P23:54
kaiuwecan't you just stop always announcing "We switched to GStreamer for the Phonon backend, which gives us better HTML5 video support."?!23:54
kaiuweoh I forgot23:54
kaiuwe"No support" + better = still no support23:54
=== kaiuwe is now known as BajK
oryslaomaiweng: these are only some minor problems to solve ;-)23:55
orysok23:55
orysI have two options to try23:55
orysI go try both23:55
oryssee you l8er folks!23:55
orys:-)23:55
FloodBotK1orys: Please don't flood; use http://paste.ubuntu.com to paste; don't use Enter as punctuation.23:55
orysahh, what's the annoying bot. FloodBotK1: I am longer on IRC than you are, you won't teach me how to chat :P23:56
