Average_GuyI'm having a 'keyboard not working' issue when i try to install. This has been an ongoing problem for me for more then a year.  Linux Mint 8 (and ONLY 8) installs ands runs fine, but not other version of any distro.. any thoughts?  I just found someone with what sounded similar and the solution offered (that worked) was 'Adding "i8042.nopnp=1 i8042.dumbkbd=1" to the boot options' Does this sound right? What does it mean? Ho02:36

renshaiHey all06:40
renshaiI'm having problems with what I assume is my graphics card. I have no trouble playing games / watching online videos at all on my windows boot, but when I try to set them up in Ubuntu I get serious fps issues and glitchy playback, even in minimum settings. I haven't done anything since I installed current os to modify my drivers or anything, dunno if I need to but I'm kind of a newb in that department06:43

holsteinfor like 5-10 bucks a pop18:40

holsteinbut, if you want to do it18:40
holsteinIF you can get all of ndiswrapper moved over to that box18:40

holsteinthen, you *should* be able to point to the windows .inf18:41
holsteinand be rockin and rollin18:41

holsteinbut, you just search on the CD18:50
holsteinin the pool directory18:50
holsteinand see if what you need is there18:50
MrsHillBillyholstein. I looked on the Ubuntu CD and can't find ndiswrapper. I meant could I load the windows driver from the card CD18:52
holsteinsure18:52
holsteinthat thats where you will get the driver18:52
holsteinthe windows driver18:52
holsteinBUT18:52
holsteinthats only half of it18:52
holsteinyou need ndis18:52
holsteinto utilize that driver in linux18:52
holsteinand how do you get all of that installed?18:52
holsteinwithout internet access?18:53
holsteinthats the riddle*18:53

MrsHillBillyholstein. Just before I go. Is it possible to install proprietary software (such as Real Player) on Ubuntu as I use it a lot to burn CD's21:02
holsteinyou use realplayer to burn CD's?21:03
MrsHillBillyYep. Does that make me old £åügHîñg Øüt £öüÐ21:03
holsteinyou can try using whatever windows software you want with wine21:03
holsteinchck out http://appdb.winehq.org/21:03
holsteinbut, realplayer is just awful21:03
holsteinand i dont even think thats a matter of opinion anymore21:04
holsteini think its well documented and proven ;)21:04
holsteini just installed the windows version of FF3 in wine21:05
holsteinand it seems to be working well21:05
holsteinand agreeing with the website i was trying to use much better21:05
MrsHillBillyOk. Thanks. I will leave tyou in peace now. Thanks again21:06

rokyronnieis there a way to have a youtube sync in pidgin as it is in yahoo ?21:48
chaatif i upgrade to 11.4, is there a path to revert back to 10.10 if i have issues ?22:34
sebsebsebchaat: yeah, but only called a clean install22:34
chaatbummer22:34
sebsebseb!downgrade | chaat22:34
ubot2chaat: Attempting to downgrade to an older Ubuntu version is explicitly not supported and may break your system.22:34
sebsebsebchaat: you can maybe try it out in a web browser already22:35
sebsebsebif not soon22:35
sebsebsebprobably22:35
chaati'm wondering how the upgrade has been going for people ?22:35
sebsebsebchaat: for some it's been a slow upgrade, because of the amount of people doing it22:35
sebsebsebsome like Unity, others don't, and others have mixed feelings about it such as myself22:35
sebsebseband of course you could use other things in it such as Gnome Shell from ppa and such :)22:35
sebsebseb!gnome322:36
ubot2Gnome 3 is not currently supported on Ubuntu. A PPA for natty is available at https://launchpad.net/~gnome3-team/+archive/gnome3 but these packages are _experimental_, _unstable_ and may break your system.22:36
chaati'm running Ubuntu in a VM on a windows Vista 64 host. so i suppose that i could just create another VM and install Ubuntu 11.422:36
sebsebsebchaat: yes you can virtual machine 11.04 and try Unity like that, but you need to do it right, or it won't work, but I can provide a link22:36
sebsebsebalso I would recommend virtual machineing a few distro's, then picking one you like enough and  put on for real :)22:37
chaati'll probably continue running windows vista 64 as my host until i get another computer.22:37
sebsebsebhttp://www.theopensourcerer.com/2011/04/21/ubuntu-natty-in-virtualbox-with-unity/22:38
sebsebsebchaat: http://www.theopensourcerer.com/2011/04/21/ubuntu-natty-in-virtualbox-with-unity/22:38
chaati'm a mainframe programmer and i have a number of windows specific programs / tools that i use so until i'm confident that they all run in WINE, i need to keep a windows environment available.22:39
brybothey guys. I am running 11.04 live cd on top of a 10.04 installation. The new launch bar on the side is not showing up. Is it because of the underlying installation?23:30
charlie-tcabrybot: do you have one panel or two23:31
brybottwo. top and bottom23:32
charlie-tcaThen you are in classic mode,23:32
coz_brybot,  and you nvidia card?23:32
brybotok. is that default? I have nvidia, yes23:32
charlie-tcaIt is because the video card does not support 3d without the hardware driver23:32
coz_brybot,   without the nvidia driver installed you wont get Unity23:32
coz_brybot,  so no launcher panel23:32
brybotok cool. thanks =)23:33
brybotI was thinking about switching from NVIDIA to ATI to do some opencl type stuff. how is the driver support for ATI?23:33
charlie-tcaOn the ATI 9800 I bought to test unity, good23:33
charlie-tcaUnity works without extra drivers23:34
coz_brybot,   well I have only had one ati card,, the advantage is the driver is open source now... however i always go nvidia,, but it is up to you and  your needs I suppose23:34
brybotwhy do you always go nvidia?23:35
brybotcan I enable the nvidia driver while running the livecd?23:35
coz_brybot,  I prefer nvidia,,  intel would take second place23:35
coz_brybot,   mm  I dont know about that,,  I doubt it ,, at least not easity since the system has to be restarted to enable nvidia kernel module..23:36
brybotah. i cant even find where I enable it.23:36
coz_brybot,  that would be under system/administration. additional drivers23:36
coz_brybot,  or from alt+f2  or terminal    jockey-gtl23:37
coz_no23:37
coz_jockey-gtk23:37
brybotIt says no proprietary drivers in use on this system23:38
coz_brybot,  and it doesnt give any choices for drivers?23:38
charlie-tcaright, you can't enable it on the live cd, as far as I know, unless you use persistent usb drive23:38
brybotcorrect. its just blank23:38
coz_brybot,  then there's your answer :)23:38
brybotok. makes sense23:38
charlie-tcaWhat nvidia driver do you normally use?23:39
coz_brybot,  which nvidia card do you have?23:39
coz_:)23:39
charlie-tcacoz_: they say great minds ...23:39
coz_:)23:39
charlie-tcaI'm going away again.23:39
coz_brybot,  if you dont know,,,  in terminal       lspci | grep -i vga23:39
brybotnvidia geforce 9500 gt23:39
coz_ brybot  ok that should be more than adequate to run Unity23:40
brybotbut I may upgrade to an ATI card to do lots of computation. the ATI is faster23:40
bryboti just want to make sure im not going to have driver trouble if I make the switch23:40
holsteinhow about unity-2d23:40
coz_brybot,  ok  then  wait to install or  if you install natty now with nvidia,, make sure you remove the nvidia driver from jockey-gtk before switching cards23:40
coz_unity 2d needs to be installed though23:41
brybotok.23:41
brybotunity 3d comes default, but you have to install 2d?23:41
holsteinthats my understanding23:41
coz_brybot,   yes  unity-2d is a seprate installe23:41
holsteinwhats the package name23:41
holsteinunity-2d?23:41
coz_holstein,   unity-2d   yes ..23:41
coz_holstein,  open synaptic package manager23:42
holsteinsudo apt-get install unity-2d23:42
coz_holstein,  hit Search  type in     unity 2d23:42
holsteincoz_: i dont have 11.04 :)23:42
holsteinwell, i do23:42
holsteini have a test install23:42
holsteinbut im not using it23:42
coz_holstein,  ah I see23:42
holsteini was just suggesting that to brybot :)23:42
coz_holstein,  oh he is on livecd23:42
brybotok im trying it out23:42
holsteini bet you can install unity-2d23:43
holsteinand logout and back in23:43
holsteinfrom the live CD23:43
brybotok23:43
holsteini guess it depends on the size of unity-2d23:43
brybotso 32 bit was recommended, but I went with 64. any thoughts on that?23:44
brybotthe package DL is 4 MB23:44
holsteini use 64bit on a production machine23:44
holsteinbut, my netbook23:44
holsteinand other laptops23:44
holsteinthose are just 32's23:44
brybotim on a desktop here23:44
brybotwhat do you consider a production machine?23:44
holsteindoesnt matter so much anymore really23:44
holsteinbrybot: the machine i produce work on23:45
holsteinaudio23:45
holsteinnot so much the type23:45
holsteinthe application23:45
holsteini went with 64bit on it23:45
coz_brybot,  any machine that you work with consitently on specific jobs...coding,, audio.. graphics etc  I would consider  production machines23:45
holsteinbecause i didnt really care about flash or anything like that23:45
holsteinbut, even flash is fine now*23:45
holsteinbrybot: i think i would try a 32bit live disc23:46
holsteinjust in case theres something funky with 64bit and your graphics card23:46
holsteinbut thats very unlikely23:46
holsteinbrybot: you used to get 3d out of the box?23:46
brybotah. well, I use my desktop for mostly fun purposes.23:47
coz_not with nvidia onboard23:47
bryboti believe i would have to install the drivers23:47
coz_brybot,   ok  well fun can be productive also :)23:47
holsteinbrybot: how was it last time you installed?23:48
brybottrue. but I typically use my desktop for surfing the web and emails.23:48
holsteindid you need to install proprietary drivers?23:48
holsteindid you have 3d?23:48
bryboti installed a year ago with 10.04. i am pretty sure I had to use proprietary drivers. but I didnt use 3d. just kept it standard23:49
holsteinbrybot: those are important details23:50
holsteinif you still have that install23:50
holsteini would look23:50
holsteinand see if you *can* enable 3d23:50
holsteinand if so23:50
holsteinwhat driver you are using23:50
holsteinthats what you'll need to do here23:50
holsteinwith 11.0423:50
holsteinto get 3d unity working23:50
holsteinOR23:50
holsteinyou'll need to run 2d unity or the old gnome23:51
brybotok23:52
brybotif I was told to "compile abc from the source" how would I do that?23:52
coz_brybot,  do you have any experience compiling an appliction?23:54
brybotonly in a software development program23:54
coz_brybot,  mm  well.. when you download the source for that application,, extract the package,, lookside  for  a  README  or INSTALL  file23:55
coz_brybot,   generally one or the other s hould guide you in the proper commands to use from the terminal in compiling it23:55
coz_brybot,   it may also tell you which dependencies are required  which means you would have to install those before compiling23:56
coz_brybot,  typcial compile commands  are   1  ./configure23:56
coz_2 make23:56
coz_3  sudo make install23:56
bryboti have used the make command, but not known what I was doing23:56
coz_./configure23:56
coz_make23:56
coz_sudo make install23:56
brybotonly following directions online23:56
coz_didnt want you to get confused by the numbers there23:56
brybotthis is what I was told to do "You need to compile py-opencl and py-json from source, the package in ubuntu uses the nvidia drivers. And you can download the ati stream sdk from a post in the ATI forums."23:56
coz_brybot,  ok23:57
coz_well good luck on that...23:57
coz_I have to break here23:57
