joseph_AJHello channel.03:23
drcHello03:24
joseph_AJCan any one tell me how to get sound working on my Xubuntu system?03:24
KM0201joseph_AJ: well, whats your sound device?  if you don't know, type "lspci" no qoutes in a terminal, and find your audio device03:25
joseph_AJThat command shows that I have an nVidia Corporation CK804 AC'97 Audio Controller (rev a2)03:28
joseph_AJinstalled but I am using a Creative Labs SB Live card.03:28
joseph_AJI have both cards in the comb03:28
zenroxjoseph_AJ,  are you using the ac9703:28
joseph_AJhow do I check that?03:29
zenroxlsmod03:29
zenroxand see if the module for ac97 and/or sb live are loaded03:29

KM0201joseph_AJ: you're new at this?.. you didn't think "hey, this outputted 100 lines, what should i tell you" rather than posting the whole thing here?03:32
zenroxalso to joseph_AJ if you dont have any thang connected to the ac97 you should disable it in the bios of your pc to force it to use the sb live03:33
zenroxcause i assume the ac97 is the built in card03:34
joseph_AJYou're right.  My apologies, I am used to the Forums.....I guess I just assumed something that I shouldn't have.03:34
zenroxjoseph_AJ, we are all allowed one mistake03:34
zenroxlol03:34
joseph_AJ:o(  I promise to control myself in the future. :o)03:35
zenroxits ok joseph_AJ03:36
joseph_AJGood advise zenrox.  I didn't even think about using the BIOS to control my sound devices.03:37
zenroxyour welcome03:37
joseph_AJI know how to use M$ Windows but I am a noob at Linux and so I am still learning even the most basic uses of this OS03:38
zenroxjoseph_AJ,  we were all thare at one time or another03:39
joseph_AJThank you all for your help.  I will try using the BIOS to disable the second audio card. I suspect that will solve this problem. Thank you again.03:40

KM0201:004:17
Unit19311.04 is sweet!04:17
drcWell worth the money spent04:17
likemindeadI'm excited. Tried it back at Alpha 3, but some updates hardcore b0rked that install. :-\04:18
zenroxxubuntu 11.04 is perfect04:18
likemindeadPlan to install it tomorrow on my laptop & regular Ubuntu 11.04 on my wife's.04:18

Unit193likemindead: Do you think Xubuntu runs faster then Mint?04:20
uofm49426i hear there a problems with intel i915 and 11.0404:20
zenroxnot saing old is good04:20
likemindeadI can't really tell a difference, Unit193.04:21

KM0201uofm49426: i'vfe got a 965.. seems to work fine... it worked fine w/ Ubuntu.. its just th eeffects, etc.. drug down the rest of my laptop.. xubuntu was a great compromise.04:21
uofm49426i use to have a acer 5515 then ati stopped putting updates out04:23
uofm49426and the open driver sucked04:23
KM0201uofm49426: i've got an acer 5315.. :)  runs rather swimmingly w/ Ubuntu04:23
KM0201its actually what i'm on now04:23
zenroxthat is why i will allways get a pc with an nvidia04:24

zenroxi ant saying ati cards suck i am just saying ati does not support there drivers very well in the linux/oss sceine04:26
zenroxand nvidia seems to do a better job04:26
uofm49426best 50 dollar upgrade i ever spent04:26
KM0201zenrox: i agree... when i buy laptops/build my desktops.04:26
KM0201i always get nvidia.. this laptop was an exception, but the intel chipset has been fine (not really a gamer.. but fine for sitting around surfing)04:27

zenroxor the psyical hardware04:31
zenroxthat is the limitaion in linux period04:31

uofm49426if i decide to get ride of windows for no how can i do it with out reinstalling04:35
zenroxuse gparted delete the windows partion and expand the linux one04:37
uofm49426would you boot from cd well doing this04:38
zenroxi would04:38
KM0201uofm49426: not sure how familiar you are w/ ubuntu/linux.. but if not "very" familiar, i'd recommend having some access to windows, for at least 6mo.. either another machine, or dual booting.. cuz if you don't, you'll be reinstalling by the end of the week when you run into a problem04:38
KM0201a friend of mine goes through this every ubuntu release.04:39
KM0201he downloads it.. thinks its awesome, nukes windows.. and literally, wthin a week, he's found some insurmountable problem (that he never asks for help about)... and is reinstalling Windows.04:39
zenroxKM0201, i did for ahile when i first started then i lernt how to fix it using irc and ubuntuforums.org04:39
KM0201i have tried to tell him so many times, to dual boot for 6mo, whether he only boots windows once a month or not.. before he removes windows.. but he never listens.. he actually IM'd me tonight said he was installing 11.04 and nuking windows(never learns)...04:40
KM0201i'm glad he's in japan, so he can't come over and ask me for help04:40
zenroxomg04:40
zenroxsome ppl just never learn04:40
uofm49426im just thinking hard drive is just to small for them both04:40

zenroxis it04:41
uofm49426is there a hard drive protection software in ubuntu04:42
uofm49426under windows thinkpad has a program that can protect harddrive from shock04:43
KM0201zenrox: i've tried telling him a gazillion times, and like i said.. he's installing as we speak(or at least as of an hour ago)... and i bet you by saturday, he's reinstalling windows04:43

uofm49426how do i use remote desktop and vista04:49
KM0201i haven't used xubuntu for a long time... but my old laptop was just struggling to keep up w/ all the flash and pizzaz of 11.04 and Gnome/Unity.. was gonna install lubuntu, but decided on Xubuntu.. happy i did.04:50
zenroxsearch for taht on ubuntuforums.org04:50

KM0201Unit193: i installed linux on several friends computers (out of state) w/ Teamviewer...lol.  it's easy for me, cuz they aren't techies, adn don't know how to open ports, etc04:55
Unit193KM0201: Wubi?04:56
KM0201Unit193: oh heck no.04:56
KM0201i partition the drive and everything.. i have them install teamviewer on the live cd..lol04:56
KM0201i wouldn't put Wubi on my worst enemies computer04:56
Unit193Ah! I didn't know how you would do it other then that...04:57
* Unit193 has never used it04:57
KM0201Unit193: very simple app04:57
KM0201you start it.. it gives you a username and password... you give the remote person that username and passcode... whamo, your'e on their PC.04:58
uofm49426no if there was a program other then vm were you could install windows in a ex404:58
KM0201no port forwarding, no running a vnc server, no command line, very very easy04:58
uofm49426that would be cool04:58
Unit193I don't like TeamViewer as much....04:58
Unit193xfreerdp -u $USER -f -x l -z $IP/HOSTNAME <--- if you want to use FreeRDP04:58
zenroxand thay have a teamviewer for linux (witch is wine and win ver of teamviewer)04:58
KM0201Unit193: i don't either, ut when its 1. use teamviewer or 2. rip hair out trying to explain port forwarding., 2a, gouge out eyeballs explaining setting up vnc server 2b, ram spikes into ears explaining how to set up vnc server... .. i'll just show them how to use teamviewer..lol04:59
uofm49426wubi install window in a linux partion04:59
uofm49426that would be cool05:00
* KM0201 has saw wubi brick windows AND ubuntu way to many times, to ever trust it.05:00
zenroxi dont trust wubi either05:00
Unit193KM0201: It's sadly only for windows, but checkout UVNC SingleClick05:02
uofm49426would it be possible to run a vmware drive from grub05:02
uofm49426or plossible05:03
KM0201Unit193: meh.. teamviewer works fine for what i need it for, and i don't have to explain anything to them other than "double click that .deb and click install".. :)05:03
Unit193KM0201: Did you take a look at it?05:04
KM0201Unit193: naa.. don't really need to.. does it install on a linux live cd?05:04
KM0201Unit193: and you're still gonna have to deal w/ opening router ports, etc05:04
Unit193I don't think it will run under linux without wine: http://www.uvnc.com/addons/singleclick.html05:05
Unit193KM0201: That's the sweet part, it's a reverse connection05:05
KM0201oh ok.05:05
KM0201eh.. teamviewer works.. and i don't have to tell them how to install wine.. :).. it all gets installed when you install teamviewer05:05
Unit193Yeah, that way is better then using this in wine (But I like the *idea*)05:06

ArisVerHi, today i say goobye to xubuntu.08:27
mnemochi, I upgraded to 11.04 and terminator stopped honoring my preferred browser. they say they delegated the job of choosing browser to "gtk". xdg-open opens chromium as I want, and I also set /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/http{,s}/command and /desktop/gnome/applications/browser/exec with gconftool-2 to use chromium, but it insists in spawning firehog. any idea what else could gtk be looking at to decide what browser to spawn?08:27

knomeheh14:29
knomejozefk, http://temp.knome.fi/xubuntu/window_resize_grip.png <- this is kind of the "worst" example, but it's the most visible14:31

Sysii don't say it's noticeable but it should20:30
drcThe real 32 vs 64 question, for me, is what apps I use are really optimized for 64 bit (not merely compiled for it)?20:30
knomebin_bash, yeah, i'd say go for 64, and if it looks like nothing is working, use the extra time to go to 32 anyway20:31
KM0201Sysi: i've honestly had both on this machine, and saw no distinguishing difference.. other than the fact(back int he day) flash was a pain, multimedia codecs were a pain, any web plugin was a change.20:31

KM0201Sysi: maybe thats part of the reasoning then, i remember some of the problems back w/ 5.10 and 6.0620:32
bin_bashKM0201: if I install 32 bit, I'll get the PAE kernel and be able to use all 4gigs?20:32

KM0201and thats what forged my decision to use 32bit.20:32
KM0201bin_bash: yes, if you install 32bit, you'll get the PAE kernel, and it should see/use all 4gigs.20:32

bin_bashPirkule: you can try booting from an external20:48
KM0201charlie-tca: really?.. i've never noticed that... it's always been behind as long as i can remember20:48
Pirkuleok, got to try that also20:48

bin_bashKM0201: yeah it is a little behind. not in the announcements yet lol20:49
KM0201charlie-tca: well, today its lagging behind20:49

bin_bashKM0201: should I try the ubuntu 11.04 cd and the xubuntu usb?20:49
bin_bashmight be fun20:49
KM0201charlie-tca: have you looked at their website?20:49
charlie-tcaI run it20:49
KM0201bin_bash: i would.. i think it will work fine20:49
bin_bashand if not then i'll burn a cd20:49
charlie-tcaWhy would you insist on telling the project leader he's wrong?20:49
KM0201charlie-tca: ok.. i'm not dyslexic, and i'm looking where it says "10.10 codename maverick meercat (latest stable version)"20:50
maolmuirePirkule, try unplugging the box, all cables for 30 seconds or so, make sure it is completely powered off. Then re-connect and try booting again.20:50
bin_bashcharlie-tca: I was just on there. It's not on the announcemens is all I said20:50
KM0201charlie-tca: i'm not insisting you're wrong, i'm insisiting i know how to read20:50
charlie-tcaI said topic, where we give the most current link to 11.0420:50
KM0201charlie-tca: and i was talking about the website20:50

KM0201i didn't say squat about the topic20:50
bin_bashcharlie-tca:  dude... we're talking about the website20:51
charlie-tcaWebsite is behind because IS is working on it20:51
KM0201get so freakin defensive and you don't know what the heck you're talking about20:51

charlie-tca!language | bin_bash20:51
ubottubin_bash: Please watch your language and topic to help keep this channel family-friendly, polite, and professional.20:51
KM0201charlie-tca: if you had read what i said, i said nothing about the topic, i said the website always lags behind a bit...20:51
bin_bashI didn't say anything bad...20:52
KM0201i know 11.04 is current, i'm not stupid.. i'm using it.20:52
bin_bash9 minutes and then I can spend another 20 making the USB20:52
charlie-tcaThen please don't tell people they have to download the beta. You should know the final is out20:52
zenroxi updated my usb drive earlyer20:53
KM0201charlie-tca: ?... i was looking at the web site... and all i said was.. "if you download the beta and update it, you'll be current"... is that not accurate?20:53
bin_bashOh, KM0201 dude. I tried UNetbootin20:53
bin_bashAnd it didn't even work LOL20:53
mikeatvillageI will be using it in 2 hours, no, wait... 5 hours. No, wrong again 1 hour 23 mins... oops no, 3 hours... :-)20:53
KM0201bin_bash: lol, your poor mac...lol20:53
charlie-tcaWhy shouldn't they just download the final image and not have to install 300 or so upgrades?20:54
bin_bashIt was like "This won't work in OS X"20:54
KM0201charlie-tca: i think somehow you've misconstrued what i aid, you realy need to go back, adn reread what i've said.20:54
bin_bashI was like "WHY THIS IS THE OS X VERSION"20:54
KM0201before you start attacking20:54
bin_bashLet's everybody calm down and have some sammiches20:54
charlie-tcaI did read it. I gave a way to get the final version only to see you say "download beta2".20:55
Sysii tried to make actual xubuntu installation to run from usb-stick, i think al almost did it20:55
charlie-tcabin_bash: unetbootin is broken again?20:55
bin_bashNo, just this stupid computer20:55
Sysiit maybe would have worked with rEFIt20:55
KM0201charlie-tca: will downloading the beta2 iso(on xubuntu.org) and updating it.. not get you to what everyone is currently up right njow?... againl you're talking about the topic, i'm talking about the website.20:55
charlie-tcaYou get to download twice or three times as much. Why do that to people?20:56
SysiKM0201: it doesn't make doing it less stupid20:56
* drc looks to see if he got to #club-ubuntu by mistake.20:56
KM0201Sysi: i was talkign bout the website lagging behind, period, nothing less...  so if thats stupid, then talk to the website devs for xubuntu.org20:56
Sysii i'll get that macbook defragged, it will run xubuntu20:56
KM0201i have no idea why this is such an issue..20:57
TheSheepKM0201: do you have anything else we can help you with?20:57

TheSheepKM0201: that's awesome, do you have a problem that we can help you with NOW?20:57

bin_basherrrr20:59
bin_bashgparted20:59
Sysinope, just following instructions20:59
bin_bashSysi: is this your first linux experience?21:00
Sysiit should anyway be easy to fix with CCC21:00
bin_bashI like using gparted to partition21:00
Sysibin_bash: i've used linux for little over two years, my GF haven't21:00
bin_bashAh ok21:00
bin_bashIs this your first time installing it on a mac, then21:00
Sysiand i haven't used EFI-machine21:00
bin_bashSysi:  Okay. Don't use the EFI boot21:01
Sysiwhat do you mean?21:01

Sysinope21:01
bin_bashOkay. Good.21:02

charlie-tcaOpenOffice in anything older21:07
jozefknice21:07
jozefk:)21:07
bin_bashcharlie-tca: no openoffice in 11.04?21:07
charlie-tcamikeatvillage: it depends on the speed of the connection usually21:07
charlie-tcabin_bash: nope, Ubuntu moved to libreoffice21:08
jozefkgood idea21:08
jozefkabout moving to libreoffice21:08
Unit193charlie-tca, I thought Xubuntu had gnome(?) office (gnumeric, abiword)21:08
bin_bash=/21:08
charlie-tcabin_bash: libreoffice has most of the changes ubuntu was making to openoffice, so it makes it a bit easier to use21:09
mikeatvillagecharlie-tca: I'm out in the sticks and well accustomed to these d/l speeds :-)21:09
bin_bashhm ok21:09
charlie-tcaXubuntu does use gnumeric and abiword, but the user can install libreoffice if desired21:09
charlie-tcamikeatvillage: I got one takes 5 hours to download the upgrades, then more time to install everything21:10
jozefkthis distro is amazing21:10

KM0201nonix4: but for Gods sake, don't say you can't see them ont he website21:39
bin_bashLOL21:39
nonix4KM0201: don't see any mention of mirrors on that site, only cdimage which is overloaded and torrents which are underseeded :)21:39
Sysibin_bash: how you're making mac-sticks, refit or something else?21:39
bin_bashSysi: terminal21:40
nonix4(usual ubuntu mirrors only seem to have ubuntu & kubuntu atm, no xubuntu)21:40
Sysitorrent should work okay21:40
bin_bashnonix4: see the topic21:40
KM0201nonix4: looks like the only thing on the link in the topic, is the alt. cds21:40
charlie-tcaIS is working on the xubuntu website, and until they get done, we can't add the mirrors to it21:40
jozefkskype installed21:41
charlie-tcahttp://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/natty/release/ has both desktop and alternate, jigdo and torrent along with the iso files21:41

bigbrovarHI guys, got couple of question about xubuntu, 1, does xubuntu come with pulse audio? two are there any tool for xfce for configuring bluetooth?21:45
mikeatvillageyes, to pulse audio21:45
KM0201bigbrovar: yes it comes w/ pulse audio, and i'm pretty sure there's bluetooth tools (not sure if they are there by default though)21:45
Sysii think bluez is installed by default21:46
Sysiif not, blueman works21:46
bin_bashokay brb tryan this21:46

KM0201lol21:46
KM0201then she can confuse you some more21:46
bigbrovarthanks21:46
KM0201bigbrovar: if they aren't installed out of the box.. they should be easy enough to install, assuming you have internet access21:47
jozefkI forgot about chrome. does it works with xubuntu?21:47
KM0201jozefk: it should.. i don't see why it wuldn't.21:47
Sysichromium-browser is in repositories and chrome works too21:48
KM0201jozefk: xubuntu.. is ubuntu.. if you can do it with ubuntu, you can do it w/ xubuntu..21:48
mikeatvillageyes, chromium and chrome work OK21:48
=== `mOOse` is now known as m00se
KM0201the tools might be different, or you may do it in a slightly different(GUI) way, but it will work.21:48
jozefkI see chromium but not chrome there21:48
KM0201jozefk: chromium is the open source version of chrome21:48
jozefkI know that21:48
KM0201if you want chrome, download the .deb from google21:48
jozefkbut i like chrome :)21:49
KM0201jozefk: they're the same browser.. youw ouldn't know the difference if soemone didn't tell you (at least i never saw a difference)21:49
Sysiit lacks the shiny pdf-opening but otherly totally same21:49
KM0201Sysi: ah, so there is a difference21:49
bigbrovarKM0201, Thanks, I use to use blueman a while back, so am quite comfy with it21:49
KM0201bigbrovar: ok.. so you shouldn't have an issue then.21:50
Sysiit also includes flash, what isn't necessarily good (and it's in the repositories anyway)21:50
jozefkby the way what's the default PDF reader?21:50
KM0201jozefk: evince i think21:50
Sysievince it is21:50
KM0201gonna say,l if youd on't know, go download obama's birth-cert and find out..lol.. you can find that anywhere21:50
jozefkI don't see evince anywhere21:51
jozefkmaybe it's hidden :)21:51
KM0201jozefk: it is.. download a pDF and open it.. and it will come up like magic21:51
KM0201well, bin_bash just signed back on to AIM very quickly,l so I'm guessing her USB didn't work..lol21:52

KM0201sounds like there isn't a server running on the xubuntu box22:15
Ceron^_netstat on the xubuntu machine shows listening on 590022:16

Sysiwell vino is actually gnome22:21
Ceron^_yeah, so i need xfce vnc server22:21
mikeatvillageI thought it ran on port 5800, and port 5900 for accessing the vncserver from a browser ?22:22
mikeatvillage(5800 to get to it with vncviewer that is)22:23
Unit193mikeatvillage: Switch the ports and you're correct22:23
mikeatvillageThanks Unit123, I always forget them :-)  I never put the port number on the end of the clientname or ip address of the vncserver, I just accept whatever it think its default is :-))22:25
mikeatvillageOh, I owe you 270  lol22:26
Unit193You could do: x11vnc -safer -forever -display :0 (if it's installed)22:26
Ceron^_Unit193: what does that do?22:27
Unit193Starts a VNC server22:27
Unit193^^^ That puts it up with NO password!!22:27
Ceron^_with what properties?22:27
Ceron^_does it show my xfce desktop?22:27
Ceron^_:)22:27
Unit193Does for me...22:28
Ceron^_:O22:28

KM0201tomasz: a video about what?22:35
KM0201why is the icion for XFCE, a mouse?  How did that come about22:48
KM0201bueller.... bueller?22:49
knomeKM0201, probably better to ask #xfce about that22:49
KM0201hmm, ok22:49
bin_bashHello. Question: How can I disable the touch-click on my touchpad? There's no option under "mouse" and there's no trackpad settings option22:50
knomebin_bash, have you tried gsynaptics22:50
bin_bashknome. No. I'm still isntalling.22:50
KM0201!synaptics22:50
ubottuFor a comprehensive Synaptics Touchpad guide, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticsTouchpad22:50

jozefkit's freezing22:53
jozefkxfce is freezing22:53
KM0201brb.. dog needs out22:54
jozefkI think it's time to clean my PC or just to get reed of it. everything start freezing on it. KDE and XFCE. only gnome worked so far but gnome3 sucks so I'll not use that :)22:55
KM0201jozefk: gnome 3 doesn't suck, when properly implemented... it doesn't work well w/ ubuntu, but if you check out gnome3.org, and look at a couple of live cds they have there(base don fedora and opensuse) it's pretty good.. but anyway.. how are you attempting to install, cd or usb?22:58
Unit193jozefk: PC specs?22:59
KM0201fwiw, i think gnome 3 is properly implemented(probably 11.10) it's gonna be fine22:59
jozefkPIV 3.2GHz HT Intel Graphic on MoBo, 2GB DDR2 RAM23:00
jozefkI will  not use gnome 3  :)23:00
Ceron^_Unit193: lol now it stopped working?23:00
jozefkI would go for KDE but it was freezing23:00
Ceron^_does xubuntu have somekind of firewall23:00
Ceron^_i am unaware off?23:00
jozefknow XFCE is also freezing23:01
KM0201jozefk: ok... how are you attemptingm to install, usb or cd?23:01
KM0201kde... ::shutters::23:01
jozefkI think this is the end of this PC :)23:01
Unit193Ceron^_: It was working?23:01
Ceron^_yeah same command23:01
Ceron^_now it doesnt work wtf..23:01
KM0201jozefk: i doubt it... but you could have an underlying hardware problem that is causing this.23:01
jozefklike what?23:01
DarkEraMaybe a bit late but on the behalf of me and buddy of mine: Congrats with the new Xubuntu release Xubuntu-team. Looking great and runs very well. Thanks23:02
jozefkdust on memory or what?23:02
KM0201jozefk: to be honest, the laptop i am on now, isn't near as powerful as your machine, and has less ram, and 11.04 is running fine23:02
KM0201jozefk: i said *could be*... now answer my question, how are you installing, from usb or cd23:02
jozefkI installed everything from CD23:02
KM0201jozefk: ok.23:03
KM0201jozefk: if it were me... i would try the alternate install cd.. and if you're trying 64bit, i would try 32bit..23:03
KM0201jozefk: also, when you burn the CD, burn SLOWLY...23:03
jozefkno I use 32bit on this machine23:03
KM0201ok.. thats finje23:03
KM0201*fine23:03
jozefkI burned 4x to RW23:04
KM0201jozefk: ok, i would try the alt. install cd, have you ever used it?23:04
jozefkbut this happened with other distros also. now only kbuntu and xubuntu23:04
jozefknever used the alt. cd23:05
Unit193Ceron^_: The computer is still responsive? Logged in? What does that command give you now?23:05
jozefknot only*23:05
KM0201jozefk: sometims if you have some hardware that is giving the live cd fits...23:05
KM0201the alt cd will get the system installed..23:05
KM0201!alternate | jozefk23:05
ubottujozefk: The Alternate CD is a classic text-mode install CD. It supports a wider range of hardware than the !LiveCD, and can also be used as an upgrade CD. http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/alternative-download#alternate - See also !minimal23:05
Ceron^_Unit193: the computer responds just fine23:05
Ceron^_with ssh23:05
Ceron^_all the time23:05
KM0201jozefk: as long as you're familiar w/ the install process, the alt cd will not be difficult for you23:06
Ceron^_29/04/2011 01:04:27 Autoprobing TCP port23:06
Ceron^_29/04/2011 01:04:27 Autoprobing selected port 590023:06
Ceron^_29/04/2011 01:04:27 Listening also on IPv6 port 5900 (socket 10)23:06
jozefkit's not about hardware support I think. it's more about some hardware defect or failure. I don't know23:06
Ceron^_The VNC desktop is:      ultrazoner:023:06
Ceron^_PORT=590023:06
Ceron^_there23:06
Unit193Ceron^_: I had it where X had issues but SSH worked fine23:06
Ceron^_Unit193: ?23:06
jozefkmight be I need to clean it or something.23:06
Ceron^_what kind of problems?23:06
MK``How's Xubuntu 11.04 going? :) Stable enough to be recommended23:07
KM0201jozefk: very unlikely...23:07
MK``?*23:07
charlie-tcajozefk: have you ever run the memory test on that machine?23:07
KM0201the only thing a "dirty" pc can really cause, is heat buildup... and most the time, the PC will shut down when it gets to hot.;23:07
jozefkdidn't run memory test for long time23:07
KM0201memory test is another good idea.. as freezing is a good sign of bad ram..23:07
drcMK``: Rock stable for the past couple of weeks on my machine.23:07
Unit193Ceron^_: As long as you can move the mouse and click things, you don't have it23:07
jozefkit's not shutting down23:07
charlie-tcarun is until it finishes, it takes a few hours23:07
Ceron^_its wierd cause its listening23:08
jozefkfrom xubuntu live cd?23:08
Ceron^_on port 5900 right now23:08
Ceron^_but it just wont connect23:08
Ceron^_says timed out23:08
Ceron^_when i try23:08
KM0201jozefk: if its not shuttingj down, its very unlikely its heat or because the pc is "dirty"23:08
charlie-tcathat or the grub menu,. either one23:08
jozefkthere is no grub menu, linux is the only one os here23:09
Unit193Ceron^_: Connection timeout? Try to ping it (are you using it's name or IP?)23:09
charlie-tcajust hold right shift at the end of the bios checks, you should get a menu23:09
Ceron^_hmmph23:09
Ceron^_wierd23:09
Ceron^_netstat doesnt show it listening23:09
jozefkhow many hours approximately?23:09
charlie-tcasomewhere between 3 and 623:10
jozefkok then i need to start right now23:10
jozefkis there any log or the PC will wait with results?23:10
Ceron^_Unit193: yeah now x11vnc is not showing up on netstat23:11
charlie-tcaI believe it will show the results on screen23:12
Ceron^_ok now it works :p23:12
Ceron^_just had to add network ip and another port23:12
jozefkand wait for me to wake up in the morning? screen will not be gone?23:13
Unit193!vnc | Ceron^_23:13
ubottuCeron^_: VNC is a protocol for remote desktop. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VNCOverSSH describes how to use it securely.  It works best over fast connections, otherwise look at !FreeNX23:13
jozefkanyway I'll try and see23:13
jozefkthanks. it might be helpful.23:14
charlie-tcajozefk: correct, screen should not be gone even after all night23:14
jozefkif the RAM is fine then maybe the graphic on MoBo is the problem23:14
KM0201jozefk: i'd try the alt cd, but thast my opinimon.23:14
jozefkI can always try alt CD later23:15
KM0201jozefk: thats what i would do.. if you're familiar w/ the process of installing linux, it will be easy for you.23:15
KM0201but just keep in mind, its all text based23:15
KM0201if you need help, come here on another laptop and we can help you23:15
jozefkI don't mind if it is text as long as it's not too complicated as Arch for example or gentoo or slackware23:16
KM0201jozefk: its really not that difficult.23:16
jozefkthen no problem. i'll try memtest now23:17
jozefksee you tomorrow :)23:17
KM0201hae fun.23:17
KM0201nobody in xfce knows where the mouse came from23:17
aeein partional can't mount /backup23:19
drcKM0201: It's the little mouse that crept in the corners being sneaky...while the big bad gnome stomped around making grunting noises.23:19
KM0201lol23:20
KM0201as good as any i guess23:20
zenroxor it was a pet that got put in to xfce23:20

KM0201zenrox: i like it.23:21

zenroxyes23:23
KM0201yup, i like it23:23
zenroxme too its so much cleener23:23
KM0201i wish the menu was a little easier to edit/change23:23
KM0201like a gui tool, like alacarte for gnome.23:24
KM0201but.. beyond that.. i like it23:24
zenroxya thats the only gripe i have23:24
zenroxbut its great23:24
KM0201yup.23:24
Unit193I keep trying to right-click to findout what command runs the program :)23:24
KM0201lol23:24
zenroxlol23:24
likemindeadHappy Release Day, all!23:25
zenroxback at ya23:25
likemindeadShould I install libreoffice-gnome as well in Xubuntu?23:25
likemindeadOr just skip that package?23:25
zenroxwouldent hurt23:26
KM0201likemindead: just sudo apt-get install libreoffice   if it needs it, it'll install it23:26
drcDo you need LibreOffice?23:26
likemindeadI prefer it, drc.23:26
DarkErait's up to you what you want to do, not us. :)23:27
KM0201drc: as do i?23:28
drclikemindead: Oh, sorry...you said "libreoffice-gnome"...I missed the gnome part...it was a late night at the release party....23:28
KM0201lol23:28
* KM0201 got kicked 15x out of the release party23:28
drcI had to take my shoes off to keep track of how many times KM0201 got kicked...and then quit at lucky 13.....23:29
KM0201lol23:29
KM0201i thnk i got kicked an even 13...lol23:29
KM0201*1523:29
zenroxi was kicked at lest 10 times23:29
Unit193What channel?23:30
zenrox#ubuntu-release-party23:30
KM0201ubuntu-release-party23:30
KM0201you missed all the fun if you weren't there23:31
zenroxis it out yet? lol23:31
drcI thinnk for the next one, they should make an Eliza-bot.  "Is it out yet?"  "Why do ask if it's out yet?"23:31
KM0201lol23:31
zenroxit was way to much fun to trip up the bot23:32
drcAny one remember what the final "delay" (Somoa time) was when it actually was released?23:35
charlie-tcadrc: I think the release happened close to 11:00 UTC, but I might be off by an hour23:36
zenroxit was after 12:15am pst23:37
drcI meant the "because you asked" dely time....23:37
charlie-tcayeah, it was between 10:30 and 11:00 UTC23:37
charlie-tcaI don't know what that was23:37
drccharlie-tca: Every time some one asked, the bot added an houre to the projected release time.  By the time I went to bed it was midday on the 29th23:38
MK``ok I need advice: I want to do a clean install of Xubuntu on an older PC, and I already have a 10.04.2 livecd of Xubuntu. Should I install that and upgrade or is it better to download and burn an 11.04 livecd?23:38
mikeatvillageI would think an iso d/l would be quicker23:39
KM0201MK``: i would(and do) just download/burn the current cd23:42
drcMK``: I'd go for the new iso install...it's 2 releases on xubuntu and 1 of xfce...just to be safe23:42
MK``alright thanks for the advice, will do23:43
charlie-tcamuch faster to download 11.04 and install it23:43
charlie-tcaYou have to upgrade 10.04 -> 10.10 ->11.0423:43
knomefaster and less prone to errors23:44
drcand use the torrent....23:44
mikeatvillageThis machine has just taken 4 hours to download the updates, and now it's telling me it would like another 2 and a half to install ... I wish I'd gone for the iso :-))23:47
uofm49426can i do this in 10.10 http://www.ubuntugeek.com/intel-graphics-performance-guide-for-ubuntu-904-jaunty-users.html23:51
KM0201is there a keyboard shortcut, to change workspaces?..23:53
drcCTRL ALT right/left arrow?23:54
Unit193KM0201: Scroll on the desktop23:54
KM0201no scroll wheel23:54
KM0201drc: that worked23:55
KM0201where ca you change that/23:55
charlie-tcaKM0201: menu -> Settings -> Window Manager -> Keyboard23:56
mikeatvillageWhat does the "Click to start dragging "[some app]" in the bottom r/h corner do, I can't seems to figure it out.23:56
charlie-tcaIt expands the window size23:56
charlie-tcaThat is the resize grip23:57
charlie-tcabut it only works if the window is resizeable23:57
