antiphysicistI have had some eclipse problems, so I am trying to apt-get purge it and reinstall, but I am getting "package eclipse is not installed so cannot be removed", eclipse IS installed it runs under applications or by typing "eclipse" into command line00:00
holsteinantiphysicist: i thought you compiled it?00:00
holsteinmaybe im remember it wrong00:01
antiphysicistholstein: if compiled means downloaded the source and then did something that way, no, I used the built in "ubuntu software centre"00:01
holsteinantiphysicist: try synaptic00:01
antiphysicistholstein: you were probably confused by my continual disconnection00:01
holsteinsee if you see it00:01
holsteinif not, that is odd00:01
antiphysicistholstein: sorry, I'm really very new at this, I found "synaptic package manager" and used the search function and found "eclipse", that signifies that it recognises it on my pc or that it's available to download?00:05
holsteinantiphysicist: well, both really00:05
holsteinit should say what it available to install00:06
holsteinand what is already installed00:06
holsteinand should have marks to indicate00:06
antiphysicistI think I see, in the box on the right "eclipse" has no mark but many other do, eg. "ecj" has orange ubuntu symbol and eclipse-platform has green filled square, besides many others00:08
antiphysicistholstein: forgot to tag my previous message00:09
holsteinthe green filled square means its installed00:13
holsteinpretty sure antiphysicist00:13
holsteinyou should be able to mark it for reinstallation right there00:14
holsteinjust find the package00:14
holsteinand if its installed00:14
holsteinit'll let you mark it for reinstallation00:14
antiphysicistholstein: it's stupid but I didn't know this "synaptic" existed, I thought you had to use ubuntu software centre or apt-get, thanks i will be better at solving my problems now00:16
holsteinyeah, its gui, but not too gui :)00:16
holsteini try and do everything with apt00:17
holsteinbut when i get stuck, i fire up synaptic00:17
holsteinsynaptic used to be the default gui tool in buntu00:18
holsteintil quite recently actually00:18
antiphysicistit's confusing, no google search on my problem mentioned it, all I get is command-line stuff or software manager, at first glance synaptic seems more powerful than manager and easier than terminal00:19

truepurpleAnd yes I already looked at them06:53
holsteinOK06:53
Sirkillnzashadow i updated to 11.04 i'm not really liking it06:53
holsteinso you can check and see if fglrx is installed06:53
truepurple"his is found under System->Administration->Additional Drivers.06:54
truepurpleAfter the fglrx driver is installed, reboot your system and login. To check whether the fglrx driver is working, open a Terminal " nothing in there covers "and if it refuses to install resulting in X error"06:54
truepurpleWell the error suggests it did not install06:55
holsteintruepurple: right06:55
truepurpleSuggests, hell it says it flat out06:55
holsteinso you tried getting a driver from http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx ?06:55
holsteinyeah, the driver is not getting installed06:55
nzashadowsirkill: what don't you like about it?06:55
holsteinthats why i was suggesting that link06:55
holsteinso you could maybe get some different packages06:56
Sirkillit changed most of my setting06:56
holsteinfrom ati06:56
holsteininstead of just using the automatic one from buntu06:56
holsteinwhich is failing for you for some reason06:56
truepurpleThat is one option I've considered, though I don't know how to install it, but I was told that, that option is also more difficult to remove, and also does not autoupdate06:56
Sirkillfor example i had teh connections btoon seperate from the other stuff up top and on the bottom06:56
Sirkilland it moved it back to the top without asking me06:56
holsteintruepurple: well, you got options06:56
holstein2d06:56
Sirkillalso06:56
truepurpleAdditionally, something is wrong that I get this error, and I want to know why06:56
Sirkillinstalled firefox 406:56
holsteingnome or unity-2d06:57
Sirkillwhich i was avoidinginstalling06:57
holsteintruepurple: or, trying a different driver06:57
Sirkilland now my vmware tools somehow got uninstalled06:57
Sirkillwhich is a real pain06:57
truepurpleAre you able to help me install this one?06:57
Sirkillbecuase its a massive annoyance to me to reinstall them06:57
holsteintruepurple: there are pretty good instructions at that wiki06:57
Sirkillbecuase i am not sure how i did it the first time06:57
holsteinif you get stuck somewhere06:57
holsteinim sure someone could help :)06:57
Sirkillspeaking of which how would i go about installing the vmware tools06:58
truepurpleholstein: I just told you that the problem lies outside of those instructions, and explicitely showed you how they do06:58
holsteintruepurple: i realize you did06:59
holsteinbut06:59
holsteini dont think you are willing to try the ati drivers06:59
holsteinfrom06:59
holsteinhttp://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx06:59
holsteinwhich is also suggested at that link06:59
holsteinand thats fine if you dont want to try it06:59
holsteinits just really the only other option though06:59
truepurpleholstein: I gave you 3 reasons why I didn't want to do that06:59
holsteinhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI#Install the fglrx Driver from AMD/ATI Catalyst 11.2 For Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick07:00
holsteintruepurple: right07:00
holsteinand valid ones07:00
holsteinBUT07:00
holsteinthat doesnt change the facts07:00
holsteinyou can file a bug07:00
holsteinand follow up07:00
truepurpleholstein: There is another option, finding someone knowledgable enough to be able to tell me what is going wrong here, and how to fix it, you are not such a person?07:00
holsteinand see07:00
holsteintruepurple: whats wrong is07:00

Sirkillscroll07:03
holsteintruepurple: i dont07:03
truepurpleWell, you seem to assume it is a bug related to my hardware07:03
holsteini assume its a bug relating to the driver in the repos07:03

holsteinyes07:03
holsteinmaybe noe07:03
holsteinnot*07:03
holsteinbut07:03

nzashadowthat's not too exciting, lol07:04
truepurpleThat wouldn't confirm anything07:04
holsteini would look around for a bug report07:04
holsteintruepurple: ??07:04
holsteinthat would confirm that your hardware works07:04
holsteinand the ati driver from the ati site works07:04
holsteinand the driver from buntu doesnt07:05
holsteinrigth?07:05
holsteinmabye we're not on the same page07:05
holstein...07:05
truepurpleSince its possibly a different driver, plus the ati driver specifies its for 6xxx series. Also I have talked to other people who have used that driver07:05
holsteinwell, just for the future07:06
holsteinwhen someone suggests trying a different driver07:06
holsteinyou might want to consider being open to it07:06
holsteinits challening to troubleshoot some of these issues07:06
holsteinrelating to non-open hardware07:06
Sirkillalso07:06
holsteinany hardware really*07:06
truepurpleI was open to it, when i first considered that driver, but the clincher is that its difficult to remove07:06

BrightscripterHi. Yesterday I updated to 11.04. since the update, my network connection doesn't work any more. I've tried to install the BCM43** drivers (which I succesfully installed and used in the last version of ubuntu) but still neither lan nor wlan works. (also the driver doesn't show up in the additional drivers thingy.) currently I'm connected via my Phone.15:55
holsteinBrightscripter: did you find a bug report?15:56
holsteinif you link me the wifi device info from lspci15:56
holsteini'll look around :)15:56
BrightscripterI'm sorry but what is lspci?15:57
BrightscripterI'm really new to linux in general15:57
holsteinif you open a terminal15:57
holsteinyou can run lspci15:57
holsteinand you'll see a lot of output15:57
Brightscripterdone15:57
holsteinone of those lines will be the wifi card info15:57

holsteinOK16:12
holsteinso sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer should do you right then16:12
Brightscripterdone16:12
Brightscriptershould I restart?16:12
holsteinBrightscripter: im not sure16:17
holsteinmaybe16:17
holsteini remember one of those drivers required a restart16:18
Brightscripterok I'm just gonna restart16:20
holsteinBrightscripter: ?16:24
BrightscripterI'm sorry it didn't work16:24
holstein:/16:24
holsteinBrightscripter: does it say in the jockey that drivers are activated?16:25
holsteini would still try sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer since the restart16:25
holsteinTHEN, i think you're getting into using ndiswrapper16:25
Brightscripterthe driver isn't activated16:26
holsteinsudo apt-get ndisgtk16:26
holsteinBrightscripter: can you activate it?16:26

holsteinbut the other one should *not* be activated16:27
holsteinanyways, try it again since the restart16:27
Brightscripterok16:27
holsteinand then move on to ndisgtk i say16:27
holsteinyou'll need a windows driver16:27
holsteina .inf file16:27
BrightscripterI already searched for something like that, but didn't find anything16:28
Brightscripterare you sure apt-get ndisgtk is corretly written?16:28

truepurplebioterror:  radeon 685016:42
holsteintruepurple: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=170976916:51
holsteinthis seems like what you are looking for16:51
holsteinThe fglrx (ATI porprietary drivers) do not support new xserver 1.1016:51
truepurpleSo its not just the one I get from additional drivers, but any?16:54
holsteintruepurple: where i read, there is no specification16:57
holsteinif i were you16:57
holsteinand wanted 3d16:57
holsteini would probably try the latest i could find16:57
holsteinmaybe that PPA16:58
truepurplelike the one you download from ATI16:58
truepurpleWhat is a xserver?16:58
stlsainttruepurple: your graphics config ;)16:58
stlsaintin simple terms16:58
holsteinhttp://www.xfree86.org/current/Xserver.1.html16:58
holsteintruepurple: you have 11.04?16:59
holsteinyou can always go back to ubuntu 10.0416:59
truepurplewell, at least half of it16:59
truepurpleHow?16:59
holsteinOR if your are just wanting unity16:59
holsteintheres a unity-2d16:59
holsteinsudo apt-get unity-2d17:00
holsteinand select it at login17:00
truepurpleNo, I mean reverting, and it would be to 10.1017:00
holsteinwell, im suggesting 10.0417:00
holsteinsince its the LTS17:00
stlsaintthere is not going backwards unless reinstalling17:00
holsteinLTS= long term support17:00
stlsaintjfyi17:00
holsteinand yeah17:00
holsteinyou'd install that17:00
holsteinfrom scratch17:01
holsteinim just laying out options though*17:01
holsteinactually, its looking like 10.10 isnt able to support that card yet either17:02
holsteinso probably moving forward is the only option17:02
truepurpleThe driver from ATIs website specifically states its for the 6xxx series, so its a question of this xserver update thing17:04
truepurpleThis xserver update, it is in 10.10?17:05
holsteinid have to check17:06
holsteinlet me through a couple things at you17:06
holsteinim running out the door17:06
holsteinhttps://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa17:06
holstein^ that could be an option17:06
holsteini got that from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=100819017:07
holsteinhttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1675974 was relavant17:07
holsteini have several nvidia cards and an ATI card that do not have 3d17:08
holsteinATI and VIA actually17:09
holsteini have definetly beat my head against the wall before though17:10
truepurpleoh boy, more headaches, so is it the installer that is the issue or an actual incompatibility? These links seem to be telling me opposing things17:10
holsteinand at the end, if i get it working17:10
holsteinits like 'now what'17:10
holsteini mean, if you're not going to play games on the machine17:10
holsteinand you're OK without compiz17:10
holsteini say, let it go17:10
holsteintruepurple: it wont be the installer*17:11
holsteinthats easy to get around17:11
holsteinits an incompatibilty17:11
holsteinsomewhere along the way17:11
holsteinand its challening17:11
truepurpleWell I might play games, though I do plan to dual boot with win7 eventually17:11
holsteinsince no one that manufactures that card really cares about your experience in linux17:11
holsteinand no one envolved in linux *can* care17:12
holsteinand do anything17:12
holsteinyou just gotta poke around for bug reports17:12
holsteinand try and contribute infor17:12
holsteininfo*17:12
holsteinand maybe have a test partition17:12
holsteinso you can really try some different drivers17:12
truepurpleWell http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1675974 suggests its jockey,17:13
holsteinand not be worried about blowing the whole thing out17:13
holsteintruepurple: OK17:13
holsteinso what if its the jockey?17:13
holsteinwhats that do for you?17:13
truepurpleAlso, ATIs website for its driver SPECIFICALLY mentions its compatible with 6xxx17:13
holsteinyou want to try searching in a package manager for fglrx ?17:13
holsteinand manually installing the driver?17:13
truepurpleSimple, I download the file (already have actually) from ATIs website, and manually install the driver17:14
holsteinthats what i would try817:14
holsteinwith the idea that17:14
holsteinif it breaks something17:14
holsteini know how to go it and fix it17:14
holsteinOR17:14
truepurpleThough, there is the issue of, I don't know how to do that, or how to clear it out latter if I change my mind17:14
holsteini dont mind wiping the install17:14
holsteinif i break something17:14
truepurpleInstructions I found online for installing it, simply did not work17:15
holsteinright17:15
holsteinyou'd have to keep track of the errors17:15
truepurpleThe commands give, did not function as specified17:15
holsteinand hopefully17:15
holsteinsomeone could help you troubleshoot them17:16
holsteinas you go17:16
truepurpleOk, but how do I begin?17:16
holsteintruepurple: i would look for a readme17:16
holsteinin the downloaded driver17:16
truepurpleIt doesn't come with one17:16
holsteinthen, i would ask for one17:16
holsteinbecause it should17:17
truepurpleFrom ATI? They have stated a lack of support17:17
holsteinno read me?17:17
holsteinno instructions?17:17
holsteinjust a blob?17:17
truepurpleunless the 70mb file I downloaded unpacks somehow17:17
holsteinyeah, it should17:17
holsteinanyways.. i gotta run17:18
holsteintruepurple: good luck17:18
holsteini would do that17:18
holsteinstay on that til you get it to install*17:18
truepurplewell if it does, I dont know how17:18
holsteinactually, i would just run 2d :)17:18
holsteintruepurple: you can link here17:18
holsteinthe link17:18
holsteinand 'i downloaded this and dont know what to do with it'17:18
truepurplehere?17:18
holstein'can anyone find a readme in it?'17:18
holsteinsure17:19
holsteinwhy not17:19
truepurpleBecause your the only one trying to help me at the moment17:19
holsteinright17:19
holsteinbut others are around17:19
holsteinjust not so much on the weekends usually :/17:19
truepurpleEveryone else has been silent for reasons of not being able to help or what ever17:19
holsteinwell, its a challenging issue17:20
holsteinand you are probably the only one in here with that card17:20
truepurpleAnyway, isn't a .run file, a windows executable?17:20
holsteinhmmm17:20
truepurpleOr can .run also mean packed?17:20
truepurpleI meant to say linux executable17:20
holsteinhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallingRunPackage17:20
holsteinanyways... good luck17:21
holsteinBBL..17:21
truepurpleWait sorry one more moment17:21
truepurpleIs it possible if I install this, that I could screw things up?17:21
stlsainttruepurple: anything can jack something up17:22
stlsaintwhat package are you installing?17:22
stlsaintvideo driver?17:22
truepurpleYes, from ATIs website17:22
truepurpleI'd also like to know how to clean it out latter if I change my mind17:22
truepurpleIf it doesn't work well17:22
th^^ati drivers in 11.04 are the newest17:23
stlsainttruepurple: are you familiar with command line?17:23
th^^actually newer than newest :)17:23
th^^ati made special preview release of 11-5 drivers for 11.0417:23
truepurpleth^^: Not new enough to actually run unity17:23
th^^runs fine for me17:24
truepurplestlsaint: What command line?17:24
th^^but latest 'official' drivers are anyway older than the one included17:24
truepurpleth^^: What radeon card do you have?17:24
th^^hd687017:24
truepurpleth^^: Ah, then your the one to talk to, since i have a 685017:24
th^^doesn't it start at all?17:25
truepurpleWell, first it loaded to a blank screen with a couple lines of flashing dashes at the top17:25
th^^or are you running with open driver?17:25
truepurpleNow it shows a list of stuff I don't understand, followed by nothinginess17:26
th^^open driver worked nicely for unity for me, but the performance is abysmal for games17:26
th^^for proprietary driver just click them on from 'additional drivers'17:26
truepurpleth^^: Do you have the proprietary driver installed?17:26
th^^it works great for games, fine for unity, altho dragging windows around etc is slightly slower than with open drivers17:26
th^^yes17:26
th^^but i need my games :)17:27
truepurpleThats the thing, installing from additional drivers doesn't work for me17:27
th^^it doesn't install or it doesn't work?17:27
truepurpleDoesn't install17:27
truepurple http://pastebin.com/9iC0sCwL17:27
truepurpleth^^: What ubuntu version are you using? 11.04?17:28
th^^yup17:28
truepurpleHmm, links I have say it doesn't work, but you say it does, I am getting so many different conflicting messages on this17:29
th^^hum17:29
th^^did you upgrade?17:29
truepurpleAnyway, can you make heads or tails of that error then?17:29
th^^or clean install17:29
truepurpleupgrade17:29
th^^this looks bizarre: Building for 2.6.35-28-generic and 2.6.38-8-generic17:29
th^^it looks like it's trying to build it for older kernel17:29
th^^sure you booted up to the natty kernel? :)17:29
th^^2.6.38 is the natty one17:30
truepurpleWell, since I can't load unity, I have to hold down shift at load and choose "use older linux"17:30
th^^you can choose classic gnome from GDM17:30
truepurpleI have been thinking the reason it won't load is because of my video driver17:30
truepurpleGDM?17:31
th^^you can get to the login screen right17:31
th^^login screen = gdm17:31
th^^gnome display manager :)17:31
truepurpleIf I hold down shift17:31
truepurpleduring load17:31
truepurpleI can get to a selection screen17:32
truepurpleI disabled login17:32
th^^hum. enable it again17:32
th^^then boot to the newer natty kernel, choose classic gnome for login, then install proprietary driver, boot17:32
th^^i have no experience with upgrades to natty, though, just guessing here17:33
truepurpleLogin is the screen where it asks for your password?17:33
th^^yes17:33
th^^select your username -> look for dropdown at bottom of the screen, there you can choose Ubuntu (this is unity), Ubuntu classic and Ubuntu classic (noeffects)17:34
truepurpleOk, *sigh* I got like a thousand bits of info and links to preserve if this doesn't work, then I will try that. Would you please stick around?17:34
th^^classic is old gnome2 desktop17:34
th^^more or less17:34
th^^need to go buy some food though :)17:34
truepurpleWell come back please, your about the only one i have encountered with experience with 6xxx radeon and ubuntu17:35
th^^^^17:36
truepurpleWith firefox, do you know a way to close redundant windows?17:36
th^^well this should do it: 1) disable automatic login 2) boot to the natty kernel 3) if it boots ok and you get to the login screen, 4) login using classic noeffects 5) install driver from additional drivers. 6) if it still gives the same error, remove old kernel17:37
th^^now bb 30mins or so, need kebaaab :) ->17:38
truepurpleold kernal?17:38
rokyronniebig troubles with a hard disk ! some help ? :(17:39
th^^truepurple: the 2.6.35 one17:40
th^^truepurple: however it should work if you just boot to the new kernel17:40
th^^but now brb >17:40
rokyronniecause I wanted to combine 2 partitions without losing data I resized a partition by adding to it the free space from that HDD, so that's what I did, but, after rebot my PC runns very ver HARD, I opened Gparted, and guess what? that free space is still there and now in Gparted --> Devices I can see my HDD /dev/sda (149.05Gb) and then it comes a list from /dev/sda100 (119 Gb) to /dev/sda225 (119Gb) so there are 125 "devices" what can I do to have 17:48

eiriksvinheh nevermind, doh... i just had to update!18:13
eiriksvinheh thanks for the help, it was right in front of me the whole time... just had to update18:14
eiriksvingeeeez18:14
OraizHi all - I've recently upgraded (through the update manager) to 11.04, and now my PC (which is fairly old, mind you) now freezes after booting and popping up the notice it has connected to my wireless. The mouse still responds to movement, but nothing else works.18:15
duanedesignOraiz: do you see the desktop?18:16
OraizYep, as well as the new dock.18:16
OraizI think that's what it's called anyway - with the home icon, programs, mounted drives etc.18:16
eiriksvin<Oraiz> restart, go to your login where you put in ur password and select Ubuntu Classic at the bottom for your session18:16
OraizI set my 10.10 to login automatically, that's the thing. :\18:17

Oraiz1Sorry eiriksvin - wireless kicked me.18:19
eiriksvindid that help?18:19
eiriksvinheh18:19
Oraiz1In recovery, sorry what do you mean by that? I'm on my laptop at the moment - Ubuntu is on my old desktop.18:19
truepurpleOk, I got couple weird issues18:19
duanedesignOraiz: if your keyboard still works you can try and get to a console and run the updates18:19
rokyronniestill computing :D18:20
Oraiz1It's just the mouse, annoyingly.18:20
truepurpleWhen I try to get on, it seems to default to not unity18:20
truepurpleAnd I can't seem to choose unity18:20
duanedesigntruepurple: your hardware might not be compatiable18:21
truepurpleAlso, I seem to have installed the proprietary drivers for my radeon card, but ATI control center isn't working18:21
eiriksvintruepurple> have u updated your graphics driver?18:21
duanedesigntruepurple: their is a script you can run to check18:21
truepurpleduanedesign: Check the driver?18:21
eiriksvintruepurple>  r u in classic, or did it bump u back a whole kernel?18:22
duanedesigntruepurple: /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p18:22
truepurpleWell I choose regular mode, but it seems to do classic or something anyway18:22
Oraiz1eiriksvin - what did you mean by recovery. Is that done by creating a USB with Ubuntu on and booting from that?18:23
duanedesigntruepurple: if you run that script it will check if your computer can run unity18:23
truepurpleThe weird thing is, when I enabled login, with the login screen, I see some new desktop background in the back, perhaps unity18:23
truepurpleBut when I log in with my only login option, I get this instead18:23
eiriksvin<Oraiz1> you got a startup disk made yet?18:23
Oraiz1It may just be because my hardware is so old on my desktop that things aren't compatible, but I assumed it would default to not use Unity if that were the case.18:23
Oraiz1I don't - I'll get one done. USB stick ok? I don't have any disks at the mo.18:24
truepurpleduanedesign: put "/usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test" as a terminal command?18:24
eiriksvin<Oraiz1> yeah, if u know how to do it18:24
Oraiz1Yeah I've done it before, but since wiped the drive.18:25
duanedesigntruepurple: with the -p, so the Terminal command would be:     /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p18:25
Oraiz1I have pretty bad 'net here, so... back in a few. :p18:25
truepurpleWhat does the -p switch do?18:25
eiriksvin<Oraiz1> can u just make another user?18:26
truepurpleduanedesign: What does the -p switch do?18:27
duanedesigntruepurple: it will not run without it18:27
Oraiz1I can't do anything eiriksven.18:27
Oraiz1I just boots then freezes.18:27
eiriksvin<Oraiz1> ah ok18:27
truepurpleduanedesign: It said "Segmentation fault"18:28
truepurpleAnd that is all it said, and it says it immediately18:28
eiriksvin<Oraiz1> yeah recovery is the best fix, u can change that auto login option, then change to classic at ur login when u restart18:28
th^^truepurple: any luck? :)18:29
truepurpleth^^: Yes, and no,18:29
Oraiz1Ok great, I'll try that and return if I'm unsuccessful - thanks!18:29

stlsaintrokyronnie: lol, thats not a good sign for what i was hoping for18:30
th^^truepurple: but it "works" otherwise?18:31
truepurpleth^^: Also, it sends me to a classic screen. BTW, enabling login, I did that, but it didn't give me a choice between versions, during that screen I see what I think is unity, but when i log in with my name, it goes to classic18:31
truepurpleth^^: So no, it doesn't work otherwise18:32
th^^:/18:32
truepurpleth^^: duanedesign  said to run /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p And all it said was "Segmentation fault"18:33
duanedesigntruepurple: are you using NVIDIA?18:33
truepurpleduanedesign: No, a radeon 685018:33
rokyronniethats what is says in gparted on that partition : http://pastebin.com/BgVLtVdK18:33
rokyronnieI mean, a part of it, if you want, I'll write all of it cause I can't just copy it18:34
duanedesigntruepurple: if you have not since you installed I would run the updates18:34
th^^there are no updates aside of firefox for 11.04 =)18:34
truepurpleduanedesign: I did, all it did was update firefox18:34
rokyronniethe thing is that I can't run chckdsk cause when I try to boot from my XP cd it "freeze" or taking to long on "Starting WIndows" step18:34
th^^truepurple: i think most of those probs are because of update, it just "just work" like on 687018:34
th^^truepurple: if you happen to have /home on separate partition so it's easy to reinstall, that would take like 15mins :)18:35
truepurpleth^^: When I reinstalled the drivers the second time, it reinstalled much quicker, how do I purge the files?18:35
stlsaintrokyronnie: have you tried fsck?18:35
truepurpleth^^:  Because I think its just reinstalling the same driver in the same way, maybe i need a fresh install18:36
th^^truepurple: yes, i meant fresh install18:36
truepurpleth^^: No, I mean of the driver18:36
truepurpleth^^: I don't have a live CD btw18:36

truepurpleHow do I purge the current video driver?18:37
rokyronnieit still calculating, but I don't know how much it will take18:37
duanedesigntruepurple: looks like your card uses the open source driver and not the catalyst driver18:37
th^^truepurple: toes regular gnome with effects work?18:37
truepurpleth^^: I don't know, I haven't tried/don't know any 3d games18:38
truepurpleHow do I purge the video driver?18:38
truepurpleI mean, not for linux18:38
stlsainttruepurple: for windows?18:39
truepurpleyeah18:39
stlsaintdont think that would be a good idea18:39
th^^truepurple: i mean, selecting 'ubuntu classic' from login screen, with compiz effects18:39
truepurpleWhat wouldn't be a good idea?18:39
th^^do you see dropshadows and stuff then?18:39
stlsaintunless you install another driver first then use "Device Manager" to switch drivers18:39
truepurpleth^^: How do I start this compiz?18:40
th^^truepurple: choose 'ubuntu classic' in login screen :)18:40
duanedesigntruepurple: is your card an HD card? is this a desktop or laptop18:40
truepurplestlsaint: You mean purging the driver wouldn't be a good idea? Don't worry, some soft driver takes over or something18:40
truepurpleduanedesign: desktop, a radeon HD 685018:41
rokyronniestlsaint: wanna see a fdisk -l result?18:41
stlsainttruepurple: you mean a generic driver? guess that will work18:41
stlsaintrokyronnie: lol, not if you have 225 devices listed18:41
truepurplestlsaint: Well, for the longest time I didn't have a listed driver, yet could load to classic desktop18:41
duanedesigntruepurple: ok so it does look like their is a catalyst driver for it18:42
rokyronniestlsaint: http://pastebin.com/JRmKRh8r18:42
truepurpleduanedesign: From additional drivers everything looks like it is in working order, but catalyst won't run, and neither will unity18:43
truepurpleduanedesign: So how do I purge the current driver in additional drivers?18:44
stlsaintrokyronnie: LOL, ok tell me again what you did to get this?18:44
truepurpleThere is a command for it, but I forget exactly how it goes18:44
truepurpleth^^: Are you able to open your catalyst center?18:44
th^^yes18:45
rokyronnieso I had that disk with a partition ~119Gb and rest of it were another NTFS partition with XP on it, I deleted that one, so there were free space, and I wanted to combine those 2, I mean the 119Gb part + ~30Gb free space18:45
truepurpleth^^: How do I purge the current driver so I can try to reinstall again?18:45
rokyronnieso I did it with a software ( in WIndows, sorry I can't remember the name now ) it did something, after that it reboot my PC18:45
duanedesigntruepurple: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/FglrxInteferesWithRadeonDriver#Problem:%20%20Need%20to%20fully%20remove%20-fglrx%20and%20reinstall%20-ati%20from%20scratch18:45
th^^unclick it in additional drivers :)18:45
truepurpleth^^: I told you, it doesn't work18:46
truepurpleth^^: It removes it, but readding it is too quick18:46
stlsaintrokyronnie: you tried editing a linux partition with widows Disk Management application?18:46
th^^it's probably fast only since it doesn't need to redownload it18:46
truepurpleth^^: Like its using cache or something to quickly add it back18:46
truepurpleth^^: Well perhaps I should try to redownload it18:46
th^^sorry, i don't know better than that, i just clicked the driver on in additional drivers :)18:47
truepurpleHere is a more aggressive recipe which removes both -fglrx and -ati, and reinstalls the latter:18:47
truepurpleWhat does it mean, reinstalls the latter, you mean the ati part? I thought they were the same thing18:48
duanedesigntruepurple: you do not want the latter18:48
duanedesignyou want fglrx18:48
truepurpleWhat id the difference between "fglrx" and "ati"?18:48
rokyronnieoh no18:48
truepurple*is18:48
th^^later is the open one i guess18:49
rokyronniestlsaint: there were those ntfs partitions18:49
th^^fglrx is the proprietary driver18:49
rokyronniestlsaint : were 2 partitions, one 119Gb and the other one with my XP ( ~30Gb )18:49
duanedesigntruepurple: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI18:50
truepurple"sudo: /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh: command not found"18:50
duanedesigntruepurple: ati is the open source driver. It is less capable then the proprietary fglrx driver18:50
stlsaintrokyronnie: so you tried merging two ntfs partitions and when you rebooted you came out with this setup??18:50
rokyronniestlsaint:so I installed XP on another HDD, after that removed the 30gb partition, and after that I wanted to combine those, 119+3018:50
rokyronnieyes18:51
rokyronnieI mean, after18:51
th^^truepurple: i think the quickiest fix would be to download 11.04 iso, and just do fresh install18:51
truepurpleduanedesign: I wish people would stop linking me to that page, it falls outside of what is working18:51
truepurpleth^^: Is there a way to move /home to another partition?18:52
stlsaintrokyronnie: alright, is that script still runnign18:52
rokyronniestlsaint:reboot it worked very very slow, but I discovered that I can't open that partition , I can't remember exactly the error messeage, so.. I searched on internet, someone said that a fixmbr should help, I did it from XP boot CD18:52
=== [1]minimalseeker is now known as minimalseeker
th^^hum, not really 'move' but.. you need to create new partition i think18:53
rokyronniestlsaint:and then I discovered is the same, so... came here in Ubuntu and discovered that "I have 125 devices"18:53
rokyronnieyes, still computing18:53
truepurpleth^^: I know that, but if I can't move it...18:53
stlsaintrokyronnie: that script should not still running, strange, alright let it continue18:54
minimalseekerHi I am trying to do a minimal install of natty from the alternate cd and I have some questions. a) During minimal install my ethernet connection is not recognized. My laptop has a JMicron MC250 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 05) Its driver is here -> jme-1.0.7.1.tbz2 at ftp://driver.jmicron.com.tw/Ethernet/Linux/ But I guess this driver is not in the minimal install/alternate install CD.18:54
rokyronnieI don't think it's still workin' I mean.. I can't hear that HDD working anymore18:55
stlsaintrokyronnie: is there a file in your /home titled RESULTS.txt ?18:55
Froqso if I want to move my /var to a different partition, do I have to say it mounts @ "/var"?18:55
stlsaintFroq: you will have to edit fstab to show where the new location is18:55
rokyronnieno18:55
minimalseekerb) If I ignore the ethernet problem, the base install progresses and goes through a "select and install software" stage and completes install. If it is a base install/command line install, why is it installing any other software?18:56
stlsaintrokyronnie: alright we will give it another ten minutes i guess and then start manually digging into the system18:56
stlsaintrokyronnie: i dont think you fully completed the process of merging those partitions18:56
truepurpleth^^: Are you there?18:56
stlsaintrokyronnie: what did you try doing in gparted?18:56
rokyronniejust see what's up there18:57
Froqstlsaint: I am doing a fresh server install though.18:57
rokyronnieI didn't did anything18:57
truepurpleI did the purge command, does that mean I need to restart?18:57
minimalseekerc) if I let it complete the install, the system reboots but the scree does not even turn on. I googled to get this solution: http://byedesigns.com/2011/04/01/ubuntu-10-10-blank-screen-after-install-solved/18:57
duanedesigntruepurple: if you have been installing the driver from 'Additional Drivers', maybe try the driver from the ATI website it is a little newer18:57
minimalseekerBut I am stumped after that.18:57
truepurpleduanedesign: If you run a purge command, does that require a restart to finalize?18:58
rokyronniestlsaint: sorry if my english is not grammatical right :D18:58

truepurpleduanedesign: Will that purge command work just fine with the version from the Ati website as well?19:00
Froqcli = command line interface!19:00
Froqgiving my 2 cents!19:00
minimalseekeryes, but its a generic root. as in not in the format of myname@mycomputer name. Just root@mycomputername19:00
stlsaintrokyronnie: run these commands in this order: (minus the quotes): "cd" "ls"19:01
stlsaintminimalseeker: well hence a minimal install19:01

rokyronnieI see just desktop dcuments and other directories19:02

minimalseekersorry what do I do NOW to get network support19:04
stlsaintrokyronnie: you may need to use locate command to find the file19:04
rokyronnieprobably it would be great to do what Gparted says but...... how? how can I give it a chdsk if I can't boot from my XP cd19:05
rokyronniehow it is called?19:05
stlsaintrokyronnie: what does gparted say to do?19:05
minimalseeker(because the ethernet was not recognized in the first place)19:05
stlsaintminimalseeker: so how do you have internet right now?19:05
rokyronniestlsaint:Failed to mount /dev/sda5 Input/Output error19:05
rokyronnieNTFS is inconsistent.Run chckdsk /f on WIndows then reboot it twice19:05
truepurpleduanedesign: th^^: Will that purge command work just fine with removing the ATI direct download version driver as well?19:05
stlsaintrokyronnie: well you wont be able to use live file system check unless you are running btrfs so you will need to boot to a live cd if you are trying to check the entire drive19:06
stlsaintrokyronnie: or do you just want to do the sda5 partition?19:06
minimalseekerOkay - I am on another laptop of mine with winxp on it. I have a linux laptop that is stuck at root command after the alternate install command line install that I then rescued with the quietsplash > nomodeset change19:07
minimalseekerthat linux laptop is hardwired to the router19:07
rokyronnienow all I want is to recover those HDD, I don't wanna lose a bit of it19:07
minimalseekerbut the ethernet was not recognized.19:07
rokyronnieand then.. make it a one single partition19:07
stlsaintrokyronnie: you have two drives yes?19:08
rokyronnieyes19:08
minimalseekerbecause I think the jmicron ethernet is not included in the modules.19:08
minimalseekermodules in the alternate cd19:08
stlsaintminimalseeker: probably not but you should have gotten a generic driver19:08
minimalseekerif I did, why is the ethernet not being recognized?19:09
stlsaintrokyronnie: well your option is to boot to a livecd and run fsck on those two drives (linux livecd)19:09
minimalseekerthere are no flashing lights where the ethernet jack is connected to the laptop port.19:09
rokyronniewindows live CD?19:09
minimalseekerthough the router says the line is connected19:09
stlsaintrokyronnie: i suggest using the linux cd/usb as windows cannot see linux partitions properly19:10

FroqYou can go into your BIOS and change the boot HDD to the one storing Ubuntu19:21
rokyronnieif I run that is says : fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.219:21
stlsaintrokyronnie: hey what is shown in the left pane where you see the directorys? How many drives are there19:21
Froqbennipropper: then also, the grub bootloader may be able to recognize the windows install natively, and if not we can work on that later.19:21
stlsaintrokyronnie: in the file browser i mean19:21
bennipropperwow that sounds simple...19:21
Froqbennipropper: so try that first19:21
bennipropperso just make the ubuntu disk primary19:21
bennipropper?19:21
rokyronnieone about 5.0Gb and one 65 which is XP one19:21
bennipropperI'll try that19:21
rokyronniethe 5 is with 11.0419:22
stlsaintrokyronnie: so your other drive is not mounted or shown?19:22
bennipropperthanks... maybe I'll be back later when it fails :P19:22
rokyronnienope19:22
rokyronniejust those 219:22
Froqbennipropper: yeah19:22
stlsaintrokyronnie: at this stage i would suggest outside help, if i was in your situation i would take that drive and put it in a external case and take it to some professionals if you have data that you absolutely CANNOT lose19:23
stlsaintrokyronnie: we keep messing with the drive and its likely to ultimately crash on ya19:24
rokyronniethere are some apps in Hires CD, I'm gonna boot on it and see what I can do19:25
rokyronniebrb19:25
stlsaintrokyronnie: it is more than likely that recoverable but the cylinders are all scatterd and jacked right now19:25
