timholumhello, I am looking at writting a mod / patch ( maybe a lens? ) for unity search, I am wondering if anyone know's of a tutorial on writting a lens, to see if that will do what I am looking for00:08
timholumThe idea I am trying to bring to reality is when I search for \\192.168.1.50 or \\someserver display's an icon I can click on to make an smb connection ( and maybe even a scp , ssh, and ftp connection  depending on difficulty )00:10

ubot2Launchpad bug 774174 in firefox "The menu "Bookmarks" in Firefox does not work correctly" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/77417417:31
chrisccoulsoni honestly can't work out what the reporter is trying to say :/17:31
LLStarkshi, i have a question regarding dpkg behavior.19:09
LLStarkslet's say i delete a file installed by a package.19:09
LLStarkswhy can't i restore that file with a dpkg? why must i first uninstall the package and its dependencies and then reinstall the package to restore the file?19:10
mtvoidLLStarks: You don't need to uninstall it first, you can simply reinstall it19:11
LLStarksi did19:11
LLStarksbut the file isn't regenerated19:11
mtvoidLLStarks: What command did you you use?19:12
LLStarksaptitude reinstall19:12
LLStarksapt-get  --reinstall as well19:12
LLStarksalso a manual dpkg with the deb19:12
LLStarksbtw, the package in question is python-apt, but i've seen this with other packages in the past19:14
mtvoidLLStarks: I just tried it out just to be sure, works fine here19:14
LLStarksif i do this: rm /usr/share/python-apt/templates/Ubuntu.info19:15
LLStarksthere's no way to get the file back unless i uninstall and then install19:15
LLStarksbut python-apt has many dependencies19:15
LLStarksso it's not practical19:16
mtvoidLLStarks: You can use dpkg to force an uninstall, ignoring the dependency problems19:16
LLStarkswhat flag?19:16
mtvoidLLStarks: Just add a --force19:17
LLStarkslemme try19:17
mtvoidLLStarks: Actually try --force-help to see all options, though --force-all will take care of it too.19:19
jbicha-f fixes everything :-)19:20
LLStarksstill nothing19:20
LLStarksls doesn't show the file19:20
LLStarksone sec19:21
LLStarksoh ****19:22
LLStarksi was using the wrong package. i needed the common.19:22
LLStarkssorry to waste your time19:22
chrisccoulsonlol19:22
chrisccoulson;)19:22
mtvoidLLStarks: I suspected something like that, actually ;)19:22
chrisccoulsonof course, if you delete a file from /etc, then i don't think reinstalling the package gets you the file back ;)19:23
LLStarksexcept for the unrelated x crash, everything's good now19:26
LLStarksthanks19:26
LLStarksthat being said though, my original concern regarding dpkg behavior is something i have encountered even when i have the right package. i'll be on the lookout for its occurrence.19:28
chrisccoulsonLLStarks, you missed my last comment ;)19:29
chrisccoulsonif you delete a file in /etc, then reinstalling a package won't bring it back19:29
chrisccoulsoni guess you might have seen that before19:29
LLStarksyeah19:29
LLStarksthat might be it19:29
LLStarkshappens whenever i wipe /etc/apt19:30
chrisccoulsondon't wipe it ;)19:30
LLStarksi'll remember not too.19:31
chrisccoulsonconffiles are handled differently by the package manager compared to other files, so it can preserve user changes19:31
chrisccoulsonwhich might include you deleting the files entirely ;)19:31
LLStarksso, the only way to repopulate files in etc is a forced removal and then installation?19:37

=== Guest75657 is now known as kklimonda`
chrisccoulsonLLStarks, or just copy the files you want from the deb ;)19:40
LLStarksbut then the symlinks and permissions might be screwed up19:40
LLStarkswhatever. i'll just not touch files that have special cases like /etc19:41
LLStarksget enough trouble etc/default/grub19:41
LLStarks*trouble with19:42
