_marx_well i think i like the classic better00:23
_marx_have to try w/vbox running see if there are display oddities00:24
Italian_Plumberis there some magic I need to do so that Ubuntu doesn't take up gobs and gobs of CPU time when copying, moving, or deleting files?  Even on a headless system, just deleting a bunch of files has bumped my load average to close to "3".00:24
_marx_Italian_Plumber: i've only seen that when using nautilus00:26
Italian_Plumberhmm00:26
_marx_you mean between hosts?00:27
Italian_Plumberno ... on the local hd00:27
Italian_Plumberwell it's coming down now.  it's still been close to 2 for the last 10 minutes00:28
_marx_2%?00:29
Italian_Plumberno .. the load average... the 10 minute load average is 1.8700:29
Italian_Plumberand it's taken about that long to delete all these files.00:29
Italian_Plumbernow it's done and then 1 minute load average is plummetting00:30
_marx_top htop00:30
Italian_Plumberhmm... must be something else... now it's creeping back up again and it's done deleting the files.00:31
* _marx_ fixin' to move a devel drupal site from vbox server to iron server00:32
_marx_this will also test for display garbage on natty classic00:33
_marx_using vbox on unity i have black blocks and distorted alt text on the launcher00:34
_marx_Italian_Plumber: what were you using to monitor load?00:45
Italian_Plumbertop00:49
Italian_Plumberand w00:49
Italian_PlumberI think that other factors were in play though, since the load was still high even after the copying was done.00:53
marco_polodate01:20
marco_poloah, don't know how to reconnect to a byobu session01:29
holsteinunity in the house? !!15:13

* holstein looking @ http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/CodeNames15:19
junior_ello all16:03
holsteinjunior_: o/16:04
junior_i come in hopes of getting some help with unbuntu. i have a gateway dx 4200 and want to install ubuntu as a dual boot.16:05
holsteincool16:06
holsteinjunior_: what are you planning on installing?16:06
holstein10.04?16:06
holstein11.04?16:06
junior_11.0416:07
holsteinhave you downloaded an image?16:07
holsteinand burned it?16:07
junior_yes and made a bootable usb16:07
holsteinjunior_: with unetbootin?16:08
junior_i boot from usb and i get a sceen asking me if i want to run from usb install ubuntu to a hard drive , memory check and i forget the other option. i select install ubuntu to a drive and it goes to a black screen and runs a series of checks and what not after a few minutes i get a total black screen with no typing or anything16:09
holsteinjunior_: have you tried it live?16:09
holsteinyou should always try it live first16:10
junior_it wont try live either16:10
holsteinthats a great and easy troubleshooting step16:10
holsteinright16:10
holsteinSO16:10
holsteinthats what you need to troubleshoot16:10
holsteinTHEN, you'll know how to install16:10
junior_ive tryed live and it wont boot into ubuntu16:10
holsteinjunior_: right16:10
holsteini got it :)16:10
holsteinSO, let me make a few suggestions16:11
holsteinbecause, you'll need to figure out how to get the live environment booted16:11
holsteinthen, insatlling will be easier16:11
holsteinjunior_: did you make the USB with unetbootin?16:11
junior_i used the universal usb installer from the ubuntu download page16:12
holsteinOK16:12
holsteinwhile its booting up16:12
holsteinyou want to try and get to the old splash screen16:13
holsteinwhere you can hit F4 i think it is16:13
holsteinand try selecting nomodeset16:13
holsteinif i were you16:14
holsteini would DL the 10.04 LTS image16:14
holsteinburn an actual CD16:14
holsteinand try that live16:14
holsteinwhen its booting you can hit shift16:14
holsteinand get to those options16:15
junior_ok ill have to run to the store quickly for sum blanks. cd or dvd ?16:15
holsteincd16:16
holsteinyou can try the USB boot16:16
holsteini would use unetbootin*16:16
holstein*should* work fine16:16
junior_10.04 lts is the version i should select for download?16:17
holsteinthats up to you16:17
holsteinBUT, thats what i would do16:17
junior_should i go with 32 bit or 64 bit. i have a amd phenom 9550 quad core 64 bit16:18
holsteinthats up to you too16:18
holsteini have both16:18
holsteinnot really any deal breakers anyways16:18
holsteinif you have 4+gb's of ram16:19
holsteinyou probably want the 6416:19
junior_ok let me ask this. when i run 32 bit windows the os only sees half of my ram. will 32bit ubuntu do the same?16:19
holsteinyou can use a PAE kernel16:19
holsteinin 32bit16:19
holstein*assuming the motherboard supports it16:19
holsteinand it probably does16:19
holsteini would just go 6416:20
junior_ok so i selected 1.01_Live_x64  from the drop down on unetbootin16:20
holstein?16:20
holsteini wouldnt16:20
junior_10.0416:20
holsteini would just go DL the image16:20
holsteinand point unet to it16:20
holsteinmanually16:20
junior_ok16:20
holsteinbut, eitherway will probably be fine*16:21
junior_im d/l from ubuntu site 10.04 lts 64bit16:21
holsteinjunior_: thats what i would try next16:22
holsteinif i were you16:22
holsteini think you'll have a better chance of troubleshooting that installation16:22
junior_see i think i my hard drive may have a problem in the boot sector of my hard drive. i went through i little spat with a keylogger infection on my system and reformatted and reinstalled windows probably 10 in 1 weekend about 2 weeks ago. i canstantly get blue sceens when i reboot16:24
holsteinjunior_: you should test that16:24
holsteinbut, you should be able to get to a desktop16:24
holsteinfrom the live CD16:24
holsteinthats with the hard drive unplugged even*16:24
holsteinthat'll give you an idea of what all hardware is supported16:25
holsteinso you dont get surprised after you install it16:25
holsteini see that all the time16:25
holstein' i wiped windows and install ubuntu'16:25
holsteinand x doesnt work16:25
holsteinand i ask how did it run live16:25
holsteinand i get *crikets*16:25
holsteinits too easy not to use that as a troubleshooting step16:26
holsteinthere is a disk utility in the ubuntu menu16:26
holsteinyou can use that live*16:27
holsteini also use http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/16:27
holsteinto test hard drivers16:27
holsteinand other hardware16:27
holsteinyou'll want to sort that out before installing ubuntu i say16:27
holsteini mean, ubuntu is great16:27
holsteinbut its not magic16:27
holsteinif you have a bad hard driver16:27
holsteinif you have a bad hard drive*16:27
holsteinyou'll want to diagnose, and repair/replace16:27
junior_what should i use to burn the iso to a disk?16:30
junior_im on windows 7. just right click the iso and burn?16:31
holsteinjunior_: you want to copy the disc image16:32
holsteini dont know about win716:32
holsteinbut just make sure your not burning a date disc16:32
holsteinwith the image16:32
holsteinyou need to copy the disc16:32
holsteinwith the iso image as the source16:32
holsteinjunior_: unetbootin will work though16:32
junior_unetbootin is only giving me usb options16:34
holsteinright...16:34
holsteinyou can use unetbootin to make a bootable USB stick16:34
holsteinif you dont have discs16:34
holsteinyou dont *have* to run out and buy discs16:34
holsteinunless its just not working well16:35
holsteinusb boo*16:35
holsteinanyways... im running out16:35
holsteintry #ubuntu-beginners if you need some help16:35
holsteinand no one is around16:35
holsteinjunior_: are you near asheville?16:35
holstein- hit me up if you are, and cant sort out the issues...16:35
holsteinmikeh789 "at the gmail" .com16:36
junior_ok i just got an error  sevnz.exe      there is no dosk in the drive please insert a disk into drive \device\harddisk2\dr216:36
junior_k nvm i selected the wrong drive label for the usb16:39
junior_ok its done making the bootable usb... i reboot and hit f4 or hold shift??16:45
junior_hello19:13

* _marx_ has read some scrollback23:04
_marx_wellhell display analomy  in "classic" as well when using vbox; guess 2 G ram just isn't enough23:09
holstein_marx_: what about unity-2d ?23:09
_marx_haven't tried that; i suspect low ram to video, intel on mobo video23:11
_marx_or something in virtualbox23:11
_marx_both are fine until i use vbox23:12
holsteinjunior: you get sorted?23:15
