Greg-AtlantaGAGreetings everyone! I am a linux newbie, but fairly computer knowledgeable, I have some slick fujitsu p1120 units, but the bios will not allow me to boot from CD05:24
Greg-AtlantaGAHowever, i have another new dell laptop, which I can boot from an ISO and load lubuntu onto a hard drive which will go into one of these things, would that work?05:25
Greg-AtlantaGAor does it customize itself to the device? how should I prep the HD which is going into a p1120?05:25
Greg-AtlantaGAI could PXE it, but its pxe is old as hell... likely useless05:26
Greg-AtlantaGAany advice would be great, thanks so much05:26
Greg-AtlantaGA*note, the p1120 does not come with a cd drive, it is a sub-notebook05:26
revildabSo I'm having issues with my sound.  Both the onboard and my soundcard are properly identified and listed when I do a lspci -v . Both show up in alsamixer, but I cant actually choose which one to output to.05:44
Unit193Greg-AtlantaGA: I take it you also can't boot from USB?05:50
Unit193!boot | Greg-AtlantaGA05:50
ubot5Greg-AtlantaGA: Boot options: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions - To add/remove startup services, you can use the package 'bum', or update-rc.d - To add your own startup scripts, use /etc/rc.local - See also !grub and !dualboot - Making a boot floppy: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GrubHowto/BootFloppy - Also see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SmartBootManagerHowto05:50
Greg-AtlantaGAGreetings Unit! I was ebaying!!05:56
Greg-AtlantaGAUmm, not sure but I think not05:56
Greg-AtlantaGAIt will boot only to floppy05:57
Greg-AtlantaGAHowever, I have full access to hard drive via a newer dell which will boot on any flavor you choose05:57
Greg-AtlantaGAAh, I see the readings, running over there to check it out, thanks ubot!05:58
jmarsdenGreg-AtlantaGA: There are floppies that act as a way to boot from a CD when the BIOS won't do it for you... SmartBootManager is one of them.06:07
Greg-AtlantaGAjamrsden, I have no usb cdrom however, and this thing is usb 1.0 so its dark ages, what I am trying first is to install lubuntu using this new dell I have, get it installed on the hard drive, then boot the p1120 and see if it runs06:15
Greg-AtlantaGAwill it run? or during setup does it customize itself to the system?06:15
Greg-AtlantaGAbecause I know windows, for instance, if I take the hard drive in my fujitsu pc and put it in my dell, windows freaks out and crashes, lubuntu, not sure06:16
jmarsdenGreg-AtlantaGA: Linux does that much less than Windows does, your chances of success that way are fairly high.  You may need to play with networking stuff to edit MAC addresses etc but basic Linux booting and running should be fine.06:20
Greg-AtlantaGAso during install it probes the mac of the nic and wifi, and hardcodes that somewhere in a config file, so I will just have to edit that later is what you are saying?06:25
Greg-AtlantaGAI was planning on imaging this hard drive if I liked lubuntu, is there a way I could leave that mac stuff blank and have it just source it itself as opposed to me having to manually edit every machine which runs lubuntu?06:25
jmarsdenGreg-AtlantaGA: Yes.06:25
jmarsdenI'm not sure about the "imaging" thing...06:26
Greg-AtlantaGAacronis images everything, pie easy06:26
Greg-AtlantaGAeven a windows point click idiot like me can do it, so i was hoping to do that here but, your suggesting I will have to get in there and fix each machines config or else the routers going to shit when it sees three machines with identical macs06:27
jmarsdenThe file you care about for the MAC addresses is /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules06:27
jmarsdenI *think* if you edit out the rules and the system finds new NICs it will add new rules for the new ones, so you may be in luck.06:28
jmarsdenThe script that creates those rules is at /lib/udev/rules.d/75-persistent-net-generator.rules06:29
Greg-AtlantaGApure genius... ok, stay tuned... we are about done with the install on new dell06:29
Greg-AtlantaGAwell... question is will it run that script again, possibly if no rules are in place or if I delete all nics in rules config06:30
jmarsdenIt should get run at every boot, as far as I know and from a comment in the /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules file06:30
jmarsdenHow many of these things are you going to run Lubuntu on?? :)06:31
Greg-AtlantaGAif this thing runs lubuntu like baller I'm totally wiping out xp on all of those little guys, they are great laptops but slow as hell06:32
Greg-AtlantaGAI have 35 at present06:32
Greg-AtlantaGAif I can't get them to work right, you may inherit one06:32
Greg-AtlantaGAor someone with linux know-how, to get an image I can use that is linux on these little guys that work06:33
jmarsdenOK... :)  BTW if the CPU is i586 not i686 you might need to revert back to 10.04 LTS06:33
Greg-AtlantaGAgreat machines, touch screen, small, portable, cool, just 700mhz crusoe06:33
Greg-AtlantaGAum... no idea, google p112006:33
jmarsdenhave you read http://sifter.org/~simon/journal/20030911.html which is someone's blog of doing this back in 2003-2005?06:34
Greg-AtlantaGAIt should be, its 2004 era06:34
bioterrorcrusoe06:35
bioterrorhavent heard that name for a while06:35
bioterrorflybooks were awesome06:35
Greg-AtlantaGAshit06:36
Greg-AtlantaGAits likely installing 686 as we speak no?06:36
Greg-AtlantaGAand I need to have it install 586?06:36
jmarsdenWhich release of Lubuntu are you installing?  10.04 LTS will be fine, 11.04 probably will not be so fine.06:37
Greg-AtlantaGA11.04 is installing, just finished... what should I do?06:38
bioterrorboot it :D06:38
Greg-AtlantaGA"oh, you don't know how to swim? that's ok! just jump over there on the deep end side, a few seconds and you'll figure it out!!"06:39
jmarsdenGreg-AtlantaGA: boot it and see what happens is probably worth a try... it might boot OK...06:40
Greg-AtlantaGAif it doesn't work, the lifeguard is hot06:40
bioterrorif it does not boot, try 10.04 ;)06:41
* jmarsden waits for the Fujitsu to boot, but (given how slow it is) refuses to hold his breath :)06:43
Greg-AtlantaGAhaha06:43
Greg-AtlantaGAhe is swimming....06:44
Greg-AtlantaGApast boot06:44
Greg-AtlantaGAloading06:44
Greg-AtlantaGAblack screen...shit06:44

Greg-AtlantaGAMOUSE!06:44
Greg-AtlantaGAWHITE!06:44
Greg-AtlantaGAAND LOGIN!06:45
Greg-AtlantaGAhot damn!06:45
Greg-AtlantaGAits got some sex appeal, I have to say lu looks nice06:47
jmarsdenCool.  I'm glad it works, even if that means I don't get a free funky little notebook to play with :) :)06:48
Greg-AtlantaGAGive me your address and I'll send you one06:49
Greg-AtlantaGAI'm sure you will make it run better than myself, hell you could probably get touch screen working, and if so, image the thing with acronis and give it to me06:51
jmarsdenYou never know :)06:51
Greg-AtlantaGAwhat I really want to do is run "the dude" on them06:51
Greg-AtlantaGAthrow a few at client sites, get teamviewer on it running so I can get in remotely, and thats about it06:52
jmarsdenOK, so they become cheap network probes... You don't need a GUI for that, do you?06:53
jmarsdenOh, but "Runs in Linux Wine environment" ???  Weird, why do network stuff in Windows when you have Linux? :)06:54
Greg-AtlantaGAdude is friendly, graphical, two clicks I can see everything, and I can work it so, thats why06:55
jmarsdenOK :)  I meant more, why did the people who wrote it write it for Windows rather than for Linux :)06:56
Greg-AtlantaGAtouch doesnt work... bummer06:56
Greg-AtlantaGAthats a good question, but I'm glad they did or else I wouldn't have found it06:57
jmarsdenI'd be fairly amazed if it worked out of the box.  But there may be some old driver code around somewhere on the net for it.06:57
Greg-AtlantaGAits gotten pretty good, I still am floored by how much linux has changed, it hasn't caught up to windows gui or integration as of yet but its getting damn close07:00
Greg-AtlantaGAthe things it does, it does damn well07:00
Greg-AtlantaGAits just a matter of time really...07:01
Greg-AtlantaGAbut the use case is totally different so, you can't even compare them really07:01
Greg-AtlantaGAwhat should I use to edit/fix those macs?07:05
Greg-AtlantaGAwhat is the command to do that?07:05
jmarsdenAny text editor will be fine.07:07
jmarsdenYou will need to be root to edit files in there, so something like     sudo nano /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules07:07
Greg-AtlantaGAshould I just delete everything in there then?07:10
Greg-AtlantaGAas it will regenerate right?07:11
jmarsdenYou can, I'd leave the top five lines of comments in and just delete out any lines below that07:15
jmarsdenThen reboot, and then see whether networking works :)07:16
* jmarsden is yawning, and has a server install to deal with half way up a mountain tomorrow morning... I'll go to bed but leave the client logging the channel.07:20
Greg-AtlantaGAnice, I have a girlfriend that I must drive to tybee island at 8am... I should be heading along too07:21
Greg-AtlantaGAthanks for the help marsden07:21
Greg-AtlantaGAbest wishes07:21
jmarsdenYou're welcome.  Goodnight!07:22

MrChrisDruif"For the time being, I can go ahead and whip up a 64 bit .iso if there is any interest in me doing so. It shouldn't take but a couple of hours. I have most of one put together already as I'll need it to build the 64 bit Peppermint release. Kendall Weaver"13:00

needhelpHello! I have a question: I searched your website and with google, but can't find the required minimum amount of disk space for Lubuntu. This is crucial, as my mother's upcoming slow netbook will have only 4GB of diskspace. That's why I can't even install Ubuntu or Windows XP on it :P14:12
needhelpI seriously want a Ubuntu derivate and the laptop will be some Asus eee -one I think. Please put that "disk space required" thing on your website in the System requirements section :)14:13
bioterroryou should have no probs with 4GB14:13
bioterrorI think the installer requires ~3GB or something14:14
MrChrisDruifneedhelp: Lubuntu can be installed on such a small disk, however the updated Ubiquity (installer) made some changes which made it impossible to install it with the normal disk. Go for the miniCD > Minimal installation14:14
MrChrisDruifneedhelp: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/DocumentationHelp/MinimalInstall14:14
bioterrorMrChrisDruif, you really mean you cant install 11.04 on 4GB drive?14:15
MrChrisDruifbioterror: I've you had follow the mailing-list, you heard about it :)14:15

MrChrisDruifbioterror: "As far as I know, the number in casper/filesystem.size *should* be being generated from the installed-size fields in each of the packages we install.  I plan to add code to do this to our ISO creation script soon." is what jmarsden said14:17

needhelpWon't Lubuntu install at about 2GB size? I heard Xubuntu14:41
needhelpI heard Xubuntu does*14:43
needhelpAnd Lubuntu is lighter.14:43
needhelpWell...14:45
needhelpI don't know if my mom's future sucky netbook will even have a CD-rom. I know it's some Asus EEE-one though. She gets it from a friend. I'll format it and I was thinking of a distro when I heard it only has 4 gigs on built-in storage14:46
needhelpSo so... I'm a long-time fan of Ubuntu when it comes to Linux and I had Xubuntu and Lubuntu in mind. Then I heard that Lubuntu is lighter and Xubuntu takes around 2 gigs, I heard.14:47
gNewPowerone more question: do any Lubuntu features require any hardware acceleration or Open GL?14:58
