[05:24] Greetings everyone! I am a linux newbie, but fairly computer knowledgeable, I have some slick fujitsu p1120 units, but the bios will not allow me to boot from CD [05:25] However, i have another new dell laptop, which I can boot from an ISO and load lubuntu onto a hard drive which will go into one of these things, would that work? [05:25] or does it customize itself to the device? how should I prep the HD which is going into a p1120? [05:26] I could PXE it, but its pxe is old as hell... likely useless [05:26] any advice would be great, thanks so much [05:26] *note, the p1120 does not come with a cd drive, it is a sub-notebook [05:44] So I'm having issues with my sound. Both the onboard and my soundcard are properly identified and listed when I do a lspci -v . Both show up in alsamixer, but I cant actually choose which one to output to. [05:50] Greg-AtlantaGA: I take it you also can't boot from USB? [05:50] !boot | Greg-AtlantaGA [05:50] Greg-AtlantaGA: Boot options: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions - To add/remove startup services, you can use the package 'bum', or update-rc.d - To add your own startup scripts, use /etc/rc.local - See also !grub and !dualboot - Making a boot floppy: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GrubHowto/BootFloppy - Also see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SmartBootManagerHowto [05:56] Greetings Unit! I was ebaying!! [05:56] Umm, not sure but I think not [05:57] It will boot only to floppy [05:57] However, I have full access to hard drive via a newer dell which will boot on any flavor you choose [05:58] Ah, I see the readings, running over there to check it out, thanks ubot! [06:07] Greg-AtlantaGA: There are floppies that act as a way to boot from a CD when the BIOS won't do it for you... SmartBootManager is one of them. [06:15] jamrsden, I have no usb cdrom however, and this thing is usb 1.0 so its dark ages, what I am trying first is to install lubuntu using this new dell I have, get it installed on the hard drive, then boot the p1120 and see if it runs [06:15] will it run? or during setup does it customize itself to the system? [06:16] because I know windows, for instance, if I take the hard drive in my fujitsu pc and put it in my dell, windows freaks out and crashes, lubuntu, not sure [06:20] Greg-AtlantaGA: Linux does that much less than Windows does, your chances of success that way are fairly high. You may need to play with networking stuff to edit MAC addresses etc but basic Linux booting and running should be fine. [06:25] so during install it probes the mac of the nic and wifi, and hardcodes that somewhere in a config file, so I will just have to edit that later is what you are saying? [06:25] I was planning on imaging this hard drive if I liked lubuntu, is there a way I could leave that mac stuff blank and have it just source it itself as opposed to me having to manually edit every machine which runs lubuntu? [06:25] Greg-AtlantaGA: Yes. [06:26] I'm not sure about the "imaging" thing... [06:26] acronis images everything, pie easy [06:27] even a windows point click idiot like me can do it, so i was hoping to do that here but, your suggesting I will have to get in there and fix each machines config or else the routers going to shit when it sees three machines with identical macs [06:27] The file you care about for the MAC addresses is /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules [06:28] I *think* if you edit out the rules and the system finds new NICs it will add new rules for the new ones, so you may be in luck. [06:29] The script that creates those rules is at /lib/udev/rules.d/75-persistent-net-generator.rules [06:29] pure genius... ok, stay tuned... we are about done with the install on new dell [06:30] well... question is will it run that script again, possibly if no rules are in place or if I delete all nics in rules config [06:30] It should get run at every boot, as far as I know and from a comment in the /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules file [06:31] How many of these things are you going to run Lubuntu on?? :) [06:32] if this thing runs lubuntu like baller I'm totally wiping out xp on all of those little guys, they are great laptops but slow as hell [06:32] I have 35 at present [06:32] if I can't get them to work right, you may inherit one [06:33] or someone with linux know-how, to get an image I can use that is linux on these little guys that work [06:33] OK... :) BTW if the CPU is i586 not i686 you might need to revert back to 10.04 LTS [06:33] great machines, touch screen, small, portable, cool, just 700mhz crusoe [06:33] um... no idea, google p1120 [06:34] have you read http://sifter.org/~simon/journal/20030911.html which is someone's blog of doing this back in 2003-2005? [06:34] It should be, its 2004 era [06:35] crusoe [06:35] havent heard that name for a while [06:35] flybooks were awesome [06:36] shit [06:36] its likely installing 686 as we speak no? [06:36] and I need to have it install 586? [06:37] Which release of Lubuntu are you installing? 10.04 LTS will be fine, 11.04 probably will not be so fine. [06:38] 11.04 is installing, just finished... what should I do? [06:38] boot it :D [06:39] "oh, you don't know how to swim? that's ok! just jump over there on the deep end side, a few seconds and you'll figure it out!!" [06:40] Greg-AtlantaGA: boot it and see what happens is probably worth a try... it might boot OK... [06:40] if it doesn't work, the lifeguard is hot [06:41] if it does not boot, try 10.04 ;) [06:43] * jmarsden waits for the Fujitsu to boot, but (given how slow it is) refuses to hold his breath :) [06:43] haha [06:44] he is swimming.... [06:44] past boot [06:44] loading [06:44] black screen...shit [06:44] chink... [06:44] chink.... [06:44] still no screen [06:44] WAIT! [06:44] MOUSE! [06:44] WHITE! [06:45] AND LOGIN! [06:45] hot damn! [06:47] its got some sex appeal, I have to say lu looks nice [06:48] Cool. I'm glad it works, even if that means I don't get a free funky little notebook to play with :) :) [06:49] Give me your address and I'll send you one [06:51] I'm sure you will make it run better than myself, hell you could probably get touch screen working, and if so, image the thing with acronis and give it to me [06:51] You never know :) [06:51] what I really want to do is run "the dude" on them [06:52] throw a few at client sites, get teamviewer on it running so I can get in remotely, and thats about it [06:53] OK, so they become cheap network probes... You don't need a GUI for that, do you? [06:54] Oh, but "Runs in Linux Wine environment" ??? Weird, why do network stuff in Windows when you have Linux? :) [06:55] dude is friendly, graphical, two clicks I can see everything, and I can work it so, thats why [06:56] OK :) I meant more, why did the people who wrote it write it for Windows rather than for Linux :) [06:56] touch doesnt work... bummer [06:57] thats a good question, but I'm glad they did or else I wouldn't have found it [06:57] I'd be fairly amazed if it worked out of the box. But there may be some old driver code around somewhere on the net for it. [07:00] its gotten pretty good, I still am floored by how much linux has changed, it hasn't caught up to windows gui or integration as of yet but its getting damn close [07:00] the things it does, it does damn well [07:01] its just a matter of time really... [07:01] but the use case is totally different so, you can't even compare them really [07:05] what should I use to edit/fix those macs? [07:05] what is the command to do that? [07:07] Any text editor will be fine. [07:07] You will need to be root to edit files in there, so something like sudo nano /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules [07:10] should I just delete everything in there then? [07:11] as it will regenerate right? [07:15] You can, I'd leave the top five lines of comments in and just delete out any lines below that [07:16] Then reboot, and then see whether networking works :) [07:20] * jmarsden is yawning, and has a server install to deal with half way up a mountain tomorrow morning... I'll go to bed but leave the client logging the channel. [07:21] nice, I have a girlfriend that I must drive to tybee island at 8am... I should be heading along too [07:21] thanks for the help marsden [07:21] best wishes [07:22] You're welcome. Goodnight! [07:22] and thanks everyone else, goodnight [07:23] Have a good one! [09:12] hello guys [09:13] i tried last night lubuntu live usb to upgade with it my actual one but there's no option i have only the install one [09:13] http://www.webupd8.org/2011/04/how-to-upgrade-to-ubuntu-1104-natty.html [09:22] i guess the team wud add this featur in the next release it wud be awesome ; ] [10:23] Hello, how can I turn off the sounds on xfce? [10:28] :o [10:30] anyone here?:) [10:30] I am [10:33] bioterror: Do you know how I can disable sound notifications in lxde? I searched on google but found nothing relevant that can help me. [10:46] How do i upgrade flash, it is asking me on youtube [10:47] sudo apt-get update [10:47] sudo apt-get dist-upgrade [10:50] it is the latest [10:50] just finished installing it [10:51] Maybe you have javascript disabled? [10:52] haaaa [10:52] Tenochito, you have lubuntu-restricted-extras installed? [10:53] no idea, i just installed and then updated on synaptic. [10:53] install that package [10:53] restart your browser and try youtube again [10:53] i just checked and it is istalled java or allowed [10:53] youtube works even older flash [10:55] another thing i noticed is that i can not turn volume down either on audacios or ont he applet in the bottom right [10:55] how about with alsamixer? [10:56] have not tried that yet lets see [10:57] only pcm control [10:57] works to turn down and up volume on alsamixer [11:01] :D [11:49] greetings everyone [11:49] i have a noob question> [11:50] i was poking around in lubuntu 11.04 and i have removed power button from panel [11:50] and i cant seem to bring it back... any ideas? [11:56] Veneficus: I'm using Ubuntu (gnome) experience here, but right mouse button on the bar and it'll appear a menu with options like adding stuff to the bar? [11:56] s/bar/panel [12:03] yeah, i am using ubuntu on other comps, but this is rather old laptop so i have decided on lubuntu. unfortunatly there is no option to add power button in "add panel items" [12:04] what did you mean by s/bar/panel? [12:04] s/x/y is a function meaning replace x with y [12:07] s=switch [12:07] I am used to 'switch' being used in the C way :P [12:08] MK``: I'm not the only to use it this way, it's pretty standard [12:09] I mean just the word itself is all :P [12:10] But I'm not running Lubuntu atm, so I can't check for you Veneficus [12:11] MK``, i have solution [12:11] but i need to check it [12:11] wait for a while [12:11] rm -rf .config [12:11] :D [12:11] ahaha [12:13] open your ~/.config/lxpanel/default/panels file [12:13] k, thx to bioterror suggestion, i have found a config... [12:13] k [12:13] opened [12:13] and add these line at the end [12:14] http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/604049/ [12:14] logout and log back in [12:15] will be right back [12:16] Anyone have the Maverick alpha and beta isos?... I cannot find them anywhere [12:16] Google only returns dead torrents that were just scraped [12:18] i m back [12:18] it worked [12:18] MK``, hardly [12:18] thanks, its appreciated [12:19] I used maverick betas just by upgrading [12:19] :o? [12:20] http://linux.softpedia.com/get/System/Operating-Systems/Linux-Distributions/Lubuntu-50492.shtml :D [12:23] That seems to have been replaced by 11.04 [12:24] yep [12:24] and why would you want to download 10.10 beta [12:24] as the final is perfect <3 [12:24] People always ask that when they give up looking XD [12:25] as I've used those betas, I know what I'm talking about [12:25] "Why do you want it anyway", cuz I do D: [12:25] and that's why I'm wondering [12:25] Same here [12:25] there's really no cool factor points in share for using old betas [12:28] Hi. Where can I download Lubuntu alternate 11.04? [12:29] Paintman, atm. you have to use mini install and after installation run "sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop --no-install-recommends" [12:29] When it is scheduled to be released? [12:30] Can I use the Lubuntu alternate 10.10 too? [12:30] sure, why not [12:30] "sudo do-release-upgrade -d" [12:30] and then update? [12:30] for upgrading to 11.04 [12:30] ok :D [12:31] it's lik a "clean" install? [12:32] There is an alternative CD for 10.10 [12:32] really? [12:32] yes [12:32] but not for 11.04 [12:32] (yet) [12:33] No, but someone is going to build them shortly :) [12:33] Just read it in the mailing-list today [12:35] where can I read the mailing list? [12:36] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/GettingInvolved [12:36] Or quicker: https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop/+join [12:39] MrChrisDruif: can you give me a link to the thread? [12:42] Paintman: Thread? BRB [12:43] to the thread about building Lubuntu alternate 11.04 [12:51] Paintman: I'll check [12:54] Hmm, there appears to be missing some entries in the mailing-list archive :-/ [13:00] "For the time being, I can go ahead and whip up a 64 bit .iso if there is any interest in me doing so. It shouldn't take but a couple of hours. I have most of one put together already as I'll need it to build the 64 bit Peppermint release. Kendall Weaver" [13:00] Copied from my own trash bin :P [13:01] Guys, lubuntu-desktop wasn't available right? you'd need to install lxde-session right? [13:01] I'm talking someone through the installation process [13:01] I am a newbie. [13:01] ;P [13:01] From a current Ubuntu installation [13:09] http://imgur.com/2Md8k [13:09] That's my lubuntu daily [13:10] nice. [13:10] :) [13:12] smoothtaste: That is f*cking awesome sweet :D [13:13] smoothtaste: No power button? [13:14] nah [13:14] when i hit my pulldown [13:14] i can logout, which has been modified to include suspend, hibernate, etc. in this release [13:14] and seein as im on a toshiba satellite [13:14] suspend A LOT. :P [13:15] Hibernate doesn't seem to work properly on my install. Ubuntu 10.10 based Elementary OS [13:15] who hibernates? [13:15] there's no benefits for it [13:15] bioterror: Uses no power like shutting down, but opens opened up windows etc... [13:16] suspend jumpstarts my fan :) [13:16] MrChrisDruif, technically you can do the same with any smart window manager [13:16] "save state" check - yes :D [13:16] yup [13:16] just a matter of organizing and believing [13:17] but suspending laptop wont take any more power than hibernating [13:17] only if you unplug the power cable from wall :D [13:18] bioterror: Why would I wanna use it any way? [13:18] how to disable desktop effects in lxde ??? [13:19] there's none? [13:19] There desktop effects? =-O [13:20] Yes when I minimize / maximize windows they kind of are I cant exactly explain [13:20] that's openbox stuff [13:21] well then can those be disabled ?? [13:21] yes [13:22] could it be that? [13:22] how? [13:22] 3rd party app [13:22] very like [13:22] similiar to compiz or emerald [13:22] prolly inheirited in a "batch" download. [13:36] lo ppl [13:38] hi [13:38] hmm lo ppl [13:38] hmm hi [13:39] any known problems with tha aspire one laptop and lubuntu? i tryed it but it returns direct to inlog screen [13:40] hmm does he got that problem to :P [13:40] ? [13:40] there's problem in logging in, I assume [13:40] something does not get loaded or something [13:42] possible it returns to the black scren with grey letters fast and than after les than a second to the login screen [13:43] are you selecting openbox/gnome or openbox/kde at the login screen? [13:45] just lubuntu [13:46] hmmm [13:46] I would go to tt1 [13:46] downloaded a lot of stuff lately? [13:47] or upgrade? [13:47] login, sudo service lxdm stop [13:47] good call bioterror! [13:47] and then with xinit start openbox-session [13:47] i upgraded all lately [13:47] that's what I would do [13:48] tty1 even [13:48] ? [13:49] i tryed openbox to and it was olny a rightmousebutton menu. but how can i make my wlan active? [13:49] hmmm [13:49] okay [13:49] so you can get to openbox [13:50] but lxde stuff crashes [13:50] yep [13:51] I would like to someday know the exact lubuntu starting command, so it would be easier to diag things like these [13:52] hm [13:52] hmm [13:52] i reinstalled it en will now test it again [13:52] brb [13:52] okay [13:54] lo again [13:54] i now started up agian lubuntu. [13:54] it works now [13:54] strange [13:54] did nothing diffrent [13:55] the position of moon has changed a little bit [13:55] yes thats true and the planets are more on one line now [13:56] Ow, I should've told you that...:) [13:57] yep [13:57] foei jangen [13:57] HeerSMZett, yes, if you look that line with sun [13:57] jongen [13:57] hmm [13:58] installing lubuntu needs precise timing [13:58] damn i starting to type shity now [13:58] city [13:59] yeah but why? is it not more cool to use temperature than timing? [13:59] HeerSMZett: Imagen me....switching between English and Dutch all the time :P [13:59] MrChrisDruif, your language is weird! [13:59] why? [14:00] bioterror: I know? [14:00] it just makes less sense than german or france :D [14:00] why? [14:00] i think dutch is a nice language [14:00] France is just crappy....can't make heads or toes out of it [14:01] na the local versions are great [14:01] but you guys should learn to swear in finnish! [14:01] france is crap. i really dislike that language [14:01] HeerSMZett: You'd be wrong, it's a language which is based upon exceptions [14:02] yeah but the local way of speaking it is great its one of the oldest language of the world lokal saxon [14:02] niedersaxon [14:02] yeah! [14:02] :P [14:03] Hi! Am I correct in assuming that Lubuntu is 100% community driven and that Shuttlework and/or Canonical have no control over it? [14:04] gNewPower, no control yet [14:04] * gNewPower is at work, so he might be interrupted for a while [14:04] gnewpower? [14:04] yet? [14:04] yes [14:05] gNewPower: we are following the guidelines so we can gain full adoption. [14:05] phillw, but they cannot make decisions like forcing the adoption of a desktop, right? [14:05] or, say, force Lubuntu to use application x y z [14:05] gNewPower: no, they cannot. [14:05] ok [14:05] thanks [14:06] I think I will adopt Lubuntu [14:06] I am a big Ubuntu fan, but the latest stuff from Shuttleworth and Canonical pisses me off [14:06] and I don't like how Unity and Gnome3 try to become mac-like [14:06] and LXDE looks fantastic [14:07] those are things you just have to live with [14:07] gnome3 broke lots of things [14:07] for a ordinary user [14:07] does Lubuntu use the same repos as Ubuntu? [14:07] yes [14:07] I mean - has access to the same applications [14:07] i find lubuntu a big xp like menu and things [14:07] gNewPower: they are taking ubuntu in a new direction, kubuntu, xubuntu, lubuntu will all retain our own DE's [14:08] phillw, great, that is EXCATLY what I need then [14:08] kubuntu is nice [14:08] lastly, lubuntu also has free universe multiuniverse partners? [14:08] ys [14:08] yes [14:09] same stuff [14:09] nothing is different except the eyecandy what you see [14:09] candy is dandy! [14:09] great! you made my day :-) [14:09] brb [14:12] Hello! I have a question: I searched your website and with google, but can't find the required minimum amount of disk space for Lubuntu. This is crucial, as my mother's upcoming slow netbook will have only 4GB of diskspace. That's why I can't even install Ubuntu or Windows XP on it :P [14:13] I seriously want a Ubuntu derivate and the laptop will be some Asus eee -one I think. Please put that "disk space required" thing on your website in the System requirements section :) [14:13] you should have no probs with 4GB [14:14] I think the installer requires ~3GB or something [14:14] needhelp: Lubuntu can be installed on such a small disk, however the updated Ubiquity (installer) made some changes which made it impossible to install it with the normal disk. Go for the miniCD > Minimal installation [14:14] needhelp: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/DocumentationHelp/MinimalInstall [14:15] MrChrisDruif, you really mean you cant install 11.04 on 4GB drive? [14:15] bioterror: I've you had follow the mailing-list, you heard about it :) [14:16] worse code then [14:16] but my workday is done [14:16] laters [14:17] bioterror: "As far as I know, the number in casper/filesystem.size *should* be being generated from the installed-size fields in each of the packages we install. I plan to add code to do this to our ISO creation script soon." is what jmarsden said [14:18] So currently you can't install Lubuntu with the normal CD :) [14:20] i find it big for a os 4gig.. damn why ???i ask why???? [14:26] HeerSMZett: Windows needs 30GB <_<" [14:40] i dont use windows anymore [14:41] Won't Lubuntu install at about 2GB size? I heard Xubuntu [14:43] I heard Xubuntu does* [14:43] And Lubuntu is lighter. [14:45] Well... [14:46] I don't know if my mom's future sucky netbook will even have a CD-rom. I know it's some Asus EEE-one though. She gets it from a friend. I'll format it and I was thinking of a distro when I heard it only has 4 gigs on built-in storage [14:47] So so... I'm a long-time fan of Ubuntu when it comes to Linux and I had Xubuntu and Lubuntu in mind. Then I heard that Lubuntu is lighter and Xubuntu takes around 2 gigs, I heard. [14:58] one more question: do any Lubuntu features require any hardware acceleration or Open GL? [16:51] hi [16:51] silverlightning: o/ [16:52] do you know anything about the fglrx drivers? [16:52] Hi ho silverlightning, stlsaint? [16:52] hi mark [16:53] And away we go :D [16:53] you do? [16:54] I am fuzzing with an old difficult graphic card [16:54] radeon express 200M [16:54] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StNY8P2UILs [16:55] lol [16:55] is there a way to activate fglrx drivers from cd bootup? [16:55] not sure [16:55] Dinner! [16:56] bon apetite [16:56] I keep booting up into a white screen in Ubuntu and lubuntu, and ... [16:57] anything except puppy [16:57] windows 7 is all right [16:57] maybe there's no way about it? [17:01] guys hello [17:02] i have added some repo's game and during the upgrade to 11.04 there desactivated so iwanna activate em via console how can i do that ?? thanks === slow-motion is now known as Apple === Apple is now known as slow-motion [23:25] dang, plymouth upgrades.lol
