Bulldogim having an annoying issue over here ;/04:29
Bulldogi removed fglrx and installed ati drivers  then it rebooted and now gnome session wont load04:30
mikefmail10Hello05:17
Bulldoghi?05:18
mikefmail10Just installed this irc client and I am still finding my way around it.05:22
mikefmail10Have been using Ubuntu for quite a while now. I think that it is brilliant, much better than anything Windows has to offer.05:31
Bulldogthat is true05:32
HazRPGit is :305:46
HazRPGBulldog: I'd help you out with your graphics problems, but I've never dealt with ATI stuff before05:49
HazRPGmight be worth trying to see if an older version of the ATI drivers work better though (or newer)05:50
BulldogHazRPG im doing a new install of ubuntu05:50
Bulldoggraphics was fine  its just gnome 3 doesnt liek them05:51
Bulldoglike*05:51
HazRPGah05:56
HazRPGweird05:57
Bulldogmight put the open ati driver on instead of fglrx  and see how well they run05:59
Bulldogi hate how unity is laid out06:01
AlanBellmorning all09:22
MartijnVdS\o AlanBell09:23

MartijnVdSNo idea. Don't think so though09:40
Bulldoghmm09:41
MartijnVdSWhat happened when you tried :P09:41
Bulldogi havnt yet  but gnome 3 was a bit glitchy so i wanted to have both sessions so i can test with out it messing up again09:42
BulldogMartijnVds  what if i add another user ?  could i have gnome2 on one and 3 on other09:50
MartijnVdSBulldog: it all depends on the packaging09:50
MartijnVdSBulldog: not on the number of users you're using09:50
Bulldoghmm im gonna have a try09:52
MartijnVdSgood luck09:52
Bulldoghmm there must be a way because u can have  no effect mode / safe mode ect..10:01
KrimZonin lucid, I added the session indicator applet to my panel and it worked at first, but then having rebooted it no longer hooks up to pidgin properly and just shows me as being offline10:02
Bulldogtry backing up /home/"user"/.purple/"accountsfile"   then uninstall pidgin  reinstall   then put the accounts file back   try a reboot and see if it works ?10:04
brobostigongood morning everyone.10:19

Bulldogsomething is wrong with gstreamer ;/10:53
Bulldogwhats the difference between the ati linux driver on the website and the Fglrx driver ubuntu offers11:07
jacobwubuntu just packages the driver as released by ati11:10
jacobwthere can't be any source differences because ati's driver is closed source11:10
jacobwhowever, there's a open source driver called 'radeon' included in recent ubuntu releases11:11
Bulldogok11:16
PsychobudgieBulldog, you can't have both gnome2 and gnome3 installed at the same time, you can however try gnome3 in a virtual machine11:22
brobostigonPsychobudgie: gnome-session was fixed yesterday, to allow starting of other options at hdm thn just gnome-shell.11:23
brobostigongdm*11:24
Psychobudgieit's not about selecting it11:24
Psychobudgieas far as I'm aware11:24
Bulldogi figured that if i build gnome3 then i can replace the session when i want to use it11:24
krashanCan anybody help me? I have a quite a large problem>.<11:25
PsychobudgieAs I understand it you would have to uninstall gnome 3 completely and reinstall gnome 2 every time you switch11:25
brobostigonhowever, to the point, gnome-session is now fixed, as of yesterday, so you canstart unity 3d/unity 2d, aswell as gnome-shell.11:26
Bulldoghmm11:27
krashanI installed the updated version of ubuntu (Think its 11.something something) And now when i open a firefox window amongst other things it turns white... As well with the idle screen is completely white...11:28
PsychobudgieI'm quite happy leaving unity in the bin, but that's another story11:28
brobostigonPsychobudgie: me too, but i said i would report back, when gnome-session was fixed to allow for it.11:29
Bulldogwell if i gnome-shell --replace  when i want to use gnome3  then can have gnome2 installed as well11:29
=== denny- is now known as denny
Psychobudgietry it, but my money is on it not working and probably trashing your system11:30
jacobwyou won't trash your system11:31
Bulldogok  its a fresh install so testing purposes11:31
jacobwthis isn't windows11:31
Bulldoglol11:31
krashanAre you guys talking to me?O.O11:31
Bulldogno ...  but am now11:32
Psychobudgieoh believe me, when it comes to unity/gnome2 and gnome 3 switching it's easy to lose track of what's broken and easier at that point to clean install11:32
krashanThanks:D11:32
Psychobudgielol11:32
Bulldogyeah my other sessions broke last time had to reinstall 11.0411:32
Psychobudgiethis fantasy that reinstall is something that only ever happens in windows is just that11:33
popeykrashan: might be better asking in #ubuntu11:33
krashanAlr11:33
jacobwkrashan: did you do a fresh install or upgrade from a previous version?11:33
krashanNo i did not:)11:33
popeyPsychobudgie: not for everyone11:33
krashanI dont have any more cds to freshly install ubuntu>.<11:34
PsychobudgieI never said it was, I know of systems that have been running windows xp for years without issues but others that need reinstalling after days11:34
Psychobudgiethat's my point11:34
Bulldoguse a usb then  krashan11:34
krashanAlright... Though i have tryed that before but it did not seem to work...11:35
krashanCould not find the usb and boot from it11:35
jacobwto create a live usb you need to use liveusb-creator11:35
Bulldogif you bios can boot from usb  then use unetbootin to load a iso to usb11:35
krashanUnetbootin?11:36
krashanHmm could try that11:36
Bulldogi fid unetbootin to work better than liveusb11:36
Bulldogfind*11:36
jacobwkrashan: have you updated since upgrading to 11.04, if not you may want to try that11:36
krashanAlright ill just try:)11:37
popeyBulldog: ditto11:37
krashanI could not find any updates to it>.<11:39
krashanIs there a way to repair ubuntu? Like a fresh boot ?11:40
Bulldogyeah11:40
Bulldogreinstall ;)11:40
jacobw:|11:40
krashanDanmit>.<11:41
brobostigonkrashan: repair, define what broken, to want to repaair?11:41
jacobwkrashan: so, when you start firefox it is just a white box?11:41
Bulldogguess u could delete all files u put on there remove all packages u installed   but thats lot work11:41
jacobwkrashan: and the screensaver is just white was well?11:42
krashanWell what is broken is the firefox.... and a couple of applications that just turns white.. and screeensaver as well:)11:42
jacobwkrashan: this sounds like a bug in your graphics driver11:43
Bulldoggraphics or flash problem11:43
awilkinsWhich screensaver do you have configured - sounds like an OpenGL thing11:43
krashanHmm...11:43
brobostigonkrashan: can you be more specific, white, ok, the wholewindow including the window controls? ir just the main part of the window?11:43
jacobwkrashan: what graphics card are you using?11:43
awilkinsAnd which driver for it?11:43
jacobwBulldog: i'd say it was graphics problem seen as its not limited to firefox11:44
krashanThe white screen is with no buttons and im using a  nvidia graphics c ard a 125mb(or whatever mb counts froe a 100 mb graphics cards)11:45
Bulldogyou using the default driver ?11:46
awilkinskrashan, Are you using the default OSS "nv" driver or the proprietary one?11:46
brobostigonif its a graphics issue, wouldnt errorspop up in xorg's logs?11:46
popeywe ship nouveau not nv these days11:46
awilkinspopey, 'pologies11:46
brobostigonawilkins: or nouveau?11:46
krashanIm trying to install a old versxion of the graphics card driver:)11:47
krashanCross your fingers...;)11:47
* Bulldog crosses his finger toes and eyes for extra luck11:47
* Psychobudgie crosses his ears11:48
awilkinsIf it's an nvidia card with ~100MB of RAM it's fairly old11:48
krashan*Cough cough* I dont know what your talking about*Wishels*11:48
awilkinsI have a GF4MX mobo chipset (shared system RAM) powering my HTPC box, no shame in old11:49

jacobwit's not a problem this time though :P11:52
jacobwi wonder how he's tested it works :|11:53
awilkinsNo longer draws white boxes instead of apps?11:53
Bulldogfirefox prob works again .....11:53
awilkinsI have to say, I can't remember having a positive experience with an OSS GPU driver... which I blame more on the dogs at nvidia and AMD, but it's still not the best default experience...11:55
jacobwi've found radeon better than fglrx11:59
Bulldogi like fglrx the best   the default driver doesnt run 3d acceleration     but i wanna use gnome 3  ad it doesnt like fglrx :(12:00
jacobwfglrx has bugs that haven't been fixed for years, radeon keep fixing its bugs and improving12:02
Bulldogyeah but i cant play games with the default driver12:03
jacobwwhat games are these out of interest?12:03
Bulldogmainly play AoE3  but i also install other games like call of duty  sims ect..12:04
awilkinsI just boot Windows for games.12:05
gingminecraft not enough for you?12:05
jacobwi'm not a gamer so i can't comment12:05
Bulldogi dont like to disgrace my computer by booting into windows12:06
awilkinsI don't have time for minecraft. I realised this after building a secret underground lair with an exit in a small cabin on a tropical island.12:06
Bulldoglmao12:06
Bulldogdont you have to pay for mine craft ?12:07
awilkinsOne-off payment of $10 or something when I bought it12:07

jacobwthey are, i'm using reducto ad absudium :p12:10
Bulldogi mainly play black ops online  i find other games pointless because they are to easy12:10
hamitrondunno wtf you are on about, but ok ;)12:10
awilkinsMMOs are social networks with orks12:11
jacobwlol12:11
awilkinsI used to play EVE and quite enjoyed the social side of it, hanging with people I used to chat to on gaming forums12:11
awilkinsI also, for some inexplicable reason, find space mining really soothing12:12
* hamitron likes MMO for the player vs player aspect.... humans are unpredictable and cry when you beat them12:12

hamitronin eve, you don't have a button saying "let nobody shoot me"12:13
hamitronlike in WoW12:13
awilkinsYeah, losing your multimillion ISK mining vessel was always tense12:13
hamitronI lost about 520 million last time :/12:14
awilkinsI used to wing it and mine the really valuable stuff in deep 0.0 using a crappy Osprey and get away with it unescorted because no-one thought you'd be dumb enough to do that.12:14
hamitronhehe12:14
hamitronthe cormorant was ok for that too12:15

awilkinsCurrently struggling to motivate self to write a Key/Value store frontend for git12:19
awilkinsSo much struggling that currently 30 minutes aerobic torture on the rowing machine seems appealing12:20

Bulldog"i want to have a robot body so i can live forever"   "yeah but knowing your luck it will be powered by windows vista"12:23
awilkinsThe problems at the moment are all very self-inflicted - they ignored me when I said (2 years ago) ; this software (we bought in) is cra, please throw it away and we'll have something better in 6 months.12:23
hamitronon friday, I had to fix an RJ45 connector that had pulled itself off the cable12:23
hamitron¬¬12:24
awilkinsThose damn self-motile RJ45 plugs12:24
awilkinsWhat were they thinking, not making them out of *inert* plastic12:24
hamitronas people get more IT literate, I swear they seem to be getting more stupid12:25

hamitronat least when the average user was wary of technology, they were put off from touching it12:25
hamitronmessing, breaking12:25
hamitronwhat had really happened I reckon, a member of staff had moved the server, thinking they would save calling me out for a fee12:26
awilkinsWhen I have an IT problem it's usually either i) Stupid password policy meant that I changed my password to something absurdly secure and forget it 5 minutes later12:27

I restarted the computer again and since then ubuntu 11.04 is not loading instead shows a black screen, can any one help, thans in advance14:56
AzelphurAnyone here using Unity tell me if the Window decoration plugin is supposed to be enabled?14:57
MartijnVdSAzelphur: gord knows15:00
AzelphurI'm having a distinct lack of window decorations without it, but when I enable it it messes up unity :(15:00
MartijnVdSAzelphur: in what way15:00
Azelphurthe top panel just goes black.15:01
MartijnVdSeven after logging out and back in?15:01
Azelphuryes15:01
Azelphurand restarting unity15:01
Azelphurif I turn off window decorations the top panel works, but I have no decorations xD15:01
AzelphurIt does seem to be an entirely cosmetic glitch, if I guess where the buttons are on the top panel I can click them fine15:02

Azelphurpopey, fun, ty15:35
Azelphurthere, fixed :D15:37
Azelphurenabled window decoration and relogged, seems to be alive now15:38
davmor2popey: hows the super hub, and does it cover your dyndns?15:39
popeydavmor2: great, it doesnt do dyndns, so i have ddclient on a box inside the lan15:39
popeyit also doesnt seem to let you set dns servers15:40
davmor2popey: no justs ping your account every so often to save you having to refresh your account15:40
popeyno15:41
popeyi have installed ddclient15:41
popeyso i dont need to do anything at all15:41
davmor2popey: there is also a dyndns package15:41
popeyits okay, i have ddclient15:41
davmor2I forgot the it15:41
davmor2no it just pings.....15:41
davmor2popey: sorry the superhub doesn't, not ddclient I misread your comment15:43
AzelphurI don't think this is meant to be possible, I got unity + compiz cube :D15:43
Azelphur(good thing)15:43
davmor2Azelphur: nope that is fine15:43
AzelphurI thought it was blocked?15:43
davmor2Azelphur: no just doesn't make much sense to a new user from what I understood15:44
Azelphurok :p15:45
AzelphurIt wasn't long ago I was fighting with it because unity depends on desktop wall which conflicts with desktop cube15:45
Azelphurdavmor2, yea, I can't do it on my netbook :p15:47
AzelphurDesktop Wall provides the feature largedesktop which is required by the plugins "Ubuntu Unity Plugin"15:48
Azelphurwait, that's stupid :s15:48
AzelphurPlugin Desktop Wall provides feature largedesktop which is also provided by Desktop Cube15:49
Azelphurso then why is it complaining that largedesktop is required by unity when cube provides it, argh :p15:49
davmor2Azelphur: blame gord ;) works for me :D15:50
* Azelphur blames gord :P15:50
Azelphurdavmor2, and now I'm getting the same panel drawing issues on my netbook, clearly unity doesn't like cube at all :D15:52
davmor2Azelphur: man any one would think you thought unity was there for customisation man ;)15:57
davmor2Azelphur: just change the backdrop and get on with life :D15:57
Azelphurhaha :D15:57
AzelphurI like unity and customization, I'm making it happen :D15:57
AzelphurI've more or less got it working on my netbook, looks kinda cool the unity menu stays static while the cube rotates inside it15:58
davmor2Azelphur: yeah that sounds right15:59
Azelphurlol, it looks like compiz mouse grabbing doesn't work, I can only rotate the cube within the bounds of my display16:00
Azelphuronce the invisible mouse pointer hits the edge of the screen I can't rotate the cube any more D:16:00
Azelphuroh wait, that's just a synergy quirk.16:00
Azelphuryep, got it working flawlessly on my netbook now :P16:01
davmor2Azelphur: Yay! you 1337 hacker you :D16:02

penguin42Guest67286: Did you try the rescue/recovery option on the grub menu?16:50
Guest67286penguin42, no i havent done that, can u explain me how to do it16:51
Guest67286thanks16:51
penguin42Guest67286: Can you get the grub menu up?16:51
Guest67286penguin42, yes it comes up with grub initially16:52
penguin42Guest67286: OK, i think the option 2nd down on that menu is rescue/recovery or something similar16:52
Guest67286penguin42, yes i have seen that. what can i do after selcting that option, is it command line?16:53
penguin42Guest67286: I can't remember to be honest, but it should at least give you some more diagnostics rather than a black screen if you are lucky16:53
Guest67286penguin42, i thought rescue mode is command line from where u can operate ubuntu16:54
penguin42Guest67286: Well the important thing is to find out why there is a black screen, if you are lucky it will display more information there - I think the rescue mode doesn't use th e pretty splash screne etc - it just displays the info16:55
Guest67286penguin42, i think it is the problem with the switchable graphics16:56
Guest67286.16:58
penguin42yes that's possible16:58
Guest67286penguin42, rescue mode does it boot up with GUI16:59

XenoPhoenixDoes anybody know what might be causing green video since the 10.10 -> 11.04 upgrade? Goes away when I replug the display, but if I turn the display off and back on again afterwards it's green again :/17:49
brobostigonok, opinions, debian stable/testing or unstable/sid, or  ubuntu 10.04 lts or 11.04, for vps. now debian sid is a definate bad idea, aswould testing, i reckon. any ideas, on guidance, please.17:51
XenoPhoenixwhat Virtualisation technology is the VPS using? ubuntu-ec2 kernel is good for xen17:53
brobostigonXenoPhoenix: bitfolk, so xen.17:54
XenoPhoenixI had good experiances with LTS on xen, very stable / fast not played with the others in a vps environment though so somebody else might be able to give a better comparison17:54
brobostigonok, thankyou for your point of view, XenoPhoenix :)17:55
popeybrobostigon: i run 10.04 on three Bitfolk VPS's18:03

brobostigonok, so either debian stable, or 10.04. hmmm.18:07
hamitronboth seem ok from my experience18:08
brobostigondebian stable is now only a few months old. lts is now over a year old.18:09
shaunoit's a tough choice atm.  yes lts is over a year old, but you're pretty sure when the next version will be.  debian's roadmap is never that concrete18:10
brobostigonvery true, yes, also.18:11
hamitronI'd personally use ubuntu because of that, only used debian on my vps cuz the choice was ubuntu 10.10 or debain 618:16
hamitron:/18:16
AzelphurHmm, if a devices headphone port doesn't work out of the box, but it does work with a config edit, should I still file a bug?18:17
brobostigonhamitron: you have a good point, yes,18:18
hamitronshauno made it tbh18:19
hamitron;)18:19
AzelphurHmm, this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/654008 says fix committed18:19
lubotu3Ubuntu bug 654008 in alsa-driver (Ubuntu) "[HDA-Intel - HDA Intel] - no sound from Headphone" [Low,Fix committed]18:19
Azelphurdoes that mean it's in natty already?18:19
MartijnVdSor oneiric18:20
MartijnVdSfix committed was in october18:20
MartijnVdSso it's in natty18:20
Azelphurwell I'm still getting that issue on natty :p18:20
Azelphurfun, it's still broked then D:18:20

brobostigonoverall, i think ltc 10.04 might be the best.18:21

AzelphurMartijnVdS, can I do that with the alsa-base.conf edit in still? or should I take that out to re-break sound :p18:21
MartijnVdSAzelphur: I'd re-break first (keep a backup)18:21
MartijnVdSAzelphur: it'll wizard you through some "Is it still broken if I do this" steps18:21
Azelphurk :)18:21
Guest43043 hi guys, i recently installed ubuntu 11.04 as a triple boot with ubuntu 10.10 and windows 7 on my hp pavilion dv6-3150 sa.on restart after the grub menu it did not boot 11.04 instead the back screen appeared. i did a cold booting again which worked and then logd out to test the classic desktop screen. I restarted the computer again and since then ubuntu 11.04 is not loading instead shows a black screen, can any one help, thanks in advance18:22
AzelphurMartijnVdS, it's the headphone port that breaks without the alsa-base.conf edit :p18:22
MartijnVdSAzelphur: ubuntu-bug will guide you to create a bug. You can attach the fixed alsa-base.conf later :)18:23
AzelphurGuest43043, can you get to grub?18:23
Guest43043Azelphur, yes i can18:23
* Azelphur does some quick googling for the arguments I'm trying to remember :p18:25
AzelphurGuest43043, select the line in grub for booting 11.0418:26
Azelphurpress E18:26
Azelphurdelete the words "quiet splash" then boot (I think it's F10 to boot, it'll say at the bottom)18:26
Azelphurthat should stop the splash screen from appearing, allowing you to see any errors that may be causing brokenness18:27
Guest43043Azelphur, sorry how can I delete the splash18:28
Azelphurwith the arrows on the keyboard and the delete key? it's a text editor...18:28
Guest43043Azelphur, i have got a switchable graphi card18:29
Guest43043can it be the problem18:29
Azelphurlets start this from the beginning :p18:29
Azelphurcan you get to grub?18:30
Guest43043Azelphur, yes i can get to the grub menu.first time when i did a hot restarting it did not get to ubuntu 11.04. did a cold restarting and i could use the ubuntu 11.04 as i mentioned earlier18:31
Azelphurright, in grub can you see the 11.04 line?18:31
brobostigonohdear, i just realised, i havent actually ever properly   setup a firewall under linux yet.18:32
Guest43043Azelphur, yes i can see that still.18:32
AzelphurGuest43043, right, so select that line and press E18:32
Azelphurit'll bring you into a text editor.18:32
Guest43043Azelphur, ok so what happens then18:32
Azelphurthen you delete the words quiet splash in the text editor like I said and you can see the errors \o/18:33
Guest43043Azelphur, so i will press E, delete the quiet splash with the text editor, and do i need to restart it again?18:34
Guest43043to c the errors18:34
AzelphurGuest43043, no, then you need to press the button to boot, it'll say what it is at the bottom, I believe it's F1018:34
Guest43043Azelphur, the  "quiet splash" comes under inverted comas right? do I have to remove just those wordings or includint the inverted comas.18:35
AzelphurI don't believe it's in inverted commas18:35
Guest43043Azelphur, ok, so would it allow me to boot into 11.04 or is that the step to c errors18:36
Azelphurit's just a step to see the error.18:36
Guest43043ok18:36
Guest43043Azelphur, :-( so what should i do with errirs now18:37
Guest43043Azelphur, i am so sorry to ask this stupid Q18:37

lubotu3Current stable releases of Ubuntu use OpenOffice.org, and do not have supported packaging for LibreOffice. Ubuntu developers are working on packaging for Ubuntu Natty and backports for 10.10 and 10.04. See https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2011-January/032298.html for more information on progress and an unstable, unsupported PPA.22:00

AzelphurHmm, interesting. Certain addresses can't connect to my server, and my server can't connect to them. The packets are dropped in the datacenter on the hop before my server o.O23:37
Azelphursent a ticket off to my host, wonder what causes that xD23:38
popeyI've had that, routing issue23:45
popeythere's an ISP in canada that can't get to my VPS23:45
popeyor any VPS on that subnet23:45
ali1234i found out why i am "away"23:50
ali1234it's because i am running eve fullscreen23:50
ali1234i'm clearly not away though, it's on another desktop23:50
ali1234look, i am not away, i am right here23:50
hamitroneve <323:52
Azelphurali1234, :P23:57
Azelphurpopey, interesting, was your issue inside the datacenter too?23:57
popeythe issue was the crappy routing at the canadian ISP23:57
Azelphurhaha23:58
Azelphurnah, for me if the client traceroutes me it gets all the way to the last hop in the datacenter23:58
Azelphurand if I traceroute the client it doesn't make first hop23:58
popeyyes, same here23:58
popeyoh, i can get back23:58
Azelphurthat's weird23:58
Azelphuryea, I can't get back at all, dropped before first hop23:58
popeynice23:58
Azelphurfired off an email to the datacenter, they are clearly pondering it as it's been like an hour and usually they reply in seconds :p23:59
