keithtoohello all. I have a question. I recently updated my system with the beta and then the release version of 11.04. Apparently that broke all the 3d apps like blender and wings3d. Is it possible to reload the system from the iso without repartitioning/reformatting the drive?07:07
falseruneshello17:23
falserunesubuntu channel is too crowded maybe you guys can help me17:23
falserunesI just need to figure out what the problem is17:24
falserunessymptoms include: corrupted screenshots, and desktop  background garbles in patches when I create a new icon17:25
falserunesI have the newest NV driver however it also happened when I was operating with nouveau17:26
holsteinfalserunes: o/18:05
holsteini would suggest #ubuntu-beginners18:05
holsteinor #nouveau18:06
falserunesit's not a setup issue18:13
holstein?18:13
falserunesmost likely it is an update issue18:13
holsteinupdate?18:13
holsteinmight be a kernel regression or something18:13
falseruneswhat do you mean18:14
holsteinyou could try booting older kernels you have listed in grub18:14
falserunesI actually reinstalled in trying to figure this out18:14
holsteinhow did that go?18:14
falseruneslet me tell you the backstory18:14
holsteinis it still funky?18:14
falserunesyes18:14
holsteinright18:15
holsteinthose drivers are challenging18:15
holsteini would look for a bug report18:15
falserunesin the past problem18:15
holsteinwith your specific hardware18:15
falserunesyes18:15
falseruneswell hold on18:15
holsteinand maybe try and find an ubuntu kernel team dev18:15
holsteinsee if its even something that can be fixed18:15
falserunesI was trying to reflash my bios18:15
holsteinand as always, let nvidia know that you are having trouble18:15
holsteinthats really where the issue lies18:16
holsteinwith nvidia18:16
holsteinfalserunes: bios flash might not be a bad idea18:16
falserunesand flashrom didn't work initially18:16
holsteini have some via hardware that i flashed down a version18:16
holsteinand it really seemed to help with the openchrome driver18:16
falserunesbut, on irc, with the dev team's help I patched flashrom and got the flash to work18:17
falserunesdo you think, the flash could have effected my video add-in card18:18
falserunesmeaning not onboard18:18
holsteinhmmm18:18
holsteini wouldnt think so18:18
holsteini mean, we know exactly what the problem is18:19
holsteinthe nvidia hardware18:19
holsteinin these time18:19
holsteinwhen hardware is so cheap18:19
holsteinand its a PCIe card? AGP18:19
falserunesPCIe18:19
holsteinanyways, i would just get a better supported card18:20
holsteinbest 40 bucks you'll ever spend :)18:20
falseruneslike what card18:20
holsteinyou can probably sell the other one to a windows user18:20
holsteinfalserunes: something that you ask about18:20
holsteinlots of places18:20
holsteinand google for bug reports about18:20
holsteinAND save the reciept18:21
falserunesok, thanks18:21
holsteinive been hanging in #nouveau for a bout a week now18:21
holsteinjust listening18:21
holsteini plan to get an open driver supported dual-head card at some point18:21
* holstein is a look *before* you leap kind of guy18:22
falserunesthe thing is, while my computer was running for a week while we made the patch, I did updates as well so I was trying to eliminate that possibility18:23
falserunescome to think of it, I think it has something to do with the windows decorator18:26
falserunessorry, window decorator18:27
holstein?18:27
holsteinits all going to be the graphics driver i bet18:27
falserunesor compiz18:27
holsteini mean, set up a custom xorg.conf18:27
holsteinand force the vesa driver18:27
falserunesok, I'll try that18:27
falserunesi'll be right back18:29
falserunesi'll be darned18:34
falserunesyou were right18:34
holsteinso, now you know18:34
holsteinand you can decide what to do about it18:34
falserunesok, thanks for your help18:35
holsteini mean, theres nothing wrong with the vesa driver for most stuff18:35
holsteinbut, i would just sell that card18:35
falserunesI wanna play wow18:35
holsteinand get an easier, more supported one18:35
falserunesI mean it used to work under an old driver flawwlessly18:35
holsteinfalserunes: driver? or driver + kernel config?18:36
falserunesso, it must be me trying to stay on the edge18:36
holsteinits really challenging to troubleshoot that18:36
holsteinand say for sure18:36
falserunesyeah for sure18:36
holsteinyou *should* be able to get back to that functionality18:36
holsteinsome way or other18:36
falserunesok, I'll experiment18:37
holsteinfalserunes: theres a live hardy disc still available18:37
holsteinyou could boot that18:37
holsteinnote the kernel18:37
holsteinand the driver* or whatever18:37
holsteinand maybe learn what you need18:37
holsteincould be you blacklist something18:37
holsteinor get a backport module18:37
holsteinwho knows18:37
falseruneslike nouveau18:37
falserunesit's blacklisted right now18:38
holsteini still think #nouveau might be a good place to start18:38
holsteinfalserunes: do you have an active loco team?18:38
falserunesgeorgia and tennessee is dead18:39
falserunesso, no18:39
holsteinyou can try mine18:39
holstein#ubuntu-us-nc18:39
falseruneswoo hoo north carolina18:39
holstein:)18:39
Veloce06holstein: what card do you recommend? I've got an Nvidia 8600 GTS and I've been having all kinds of problems with video. i.e. pixelation on the screen, X locks and X restarts. I've tried all kinds of different things other than the card. If $40 for a card would fix it, it would be the best $40 I've spent.19:18
holsteinVeloce06: im still researching20:33
holsteinask me in about a month :)20:33
Veloce06holstein: dang, I used to think nvidia was the card to go for.20:33
holsteinVeloce06: depends20:35
holsteinthe RT kernels + nvidia can be problematic20:35
holstein*proprietary drivers i should say20:36
Veloce06I'm tired of the problems this card has caused. I used to have nothing but a great experience with ubuntu20:36
holsteinwell, if its an older card20:36
Veloce06right now I haven't even tried an RT kernel, just using general20:36
holsteinyou really cant expect the linux kernel to support older devices20:36
holsteinVeloce06: you probably dont need RT kernel20:37
Veloce06holstein: I'm looking at alessio's low also20:38
holsteinright20:38
holsteinif you dont need it20:38
holsteindont worry about it20:38
holsteinare you using JACK?20:38
Veloce06I will be yes20:38
holsteindo you get xruns at the JACK settings you are currently using?20:38
holsteini would still say20:38
Veloce06haven't got that far, because of the video issues20:38
holsteindont worry til you need it20:38
holsteinmaybe, by the time you get around to it20:39
holsteinthe -generic kernel will be just fine20:39
Veloce06that is a possibility.20:39
Veloce06I'm going to look at another nvidia card I have, but again it is about the same age as the one currently. I'm hoping it is a problem with the video hdw/fw of the card and not something else20:40
holsteinVeloce06: i mean, i might be wrong20:40
holsteinbut, literally everytime someone says nvidia20:41
holsteinthats the problem*20:41
Veloce06holstein: hmmm...20:41
holsteinif intel made a PCIe card20:41
holsteinid have one20:41
Veloce06really20:41
holsteinim not interested in crazy gaming performance20:41
holsteini just want easy out-of-the-box 3d20:41
holsteinand support20:41
holstein3d is optional actually*20:41
holsteini just find that if 3d is working20:42
Veloce06I'm not even thinking that much, just reliable performance20:42
holsteinthen the drivers tend to be more stable20:42
holsteinintel supplies information20:42
holsteinso, that makes supporting the devices *much* easier20:43
Veloce06holtstein: I'm just stuck now, wanting something that works and the video screen doesn't freak out and flicker all the time and doesn't restart X on a whim. Then I can concentrate on some other projects or at least doing more with sound etc20:44
Veloce06I've asked on so many forums and lists about these problems and nothing is a sure fix. If I could just get a card that work with good basic performance I would be happy. (Dual monitors of course.)20:45
holsteinill let you know what i come up with20:46
holsteinbut, its not a top priority right now20:46
Veloce06np20:47
Veloce06holstein: thanks for you help. gotta head home now.20:48
holsteinVeloce06: sure :)20:48
marcelChello!21:05
holsteinmarcelC: o/21:05
marcelCcan ubuntu studio convert Mp3 and Waw to MIDI?21:06
holsteinsure21:06
holsteinbut21:06
holsteinyou dont need ubuntustudio for that21:06
holsteinand actually, converting to MIDI is trickier21:06
holsteinand a matter of what exactly you have and want to end up with21:06
marcelCcan you give me the name of the program?21:06
marcelCI wish to convert .mp3 and wav to midi for Sibelius21:07
holsteinyou want soundconverter21:07
holsteinfor mp3 to wav21:07
holsteinBUT, getting wav to MIDI21:07
holsteinthats not going to happen the way you think it is21:07
holsteinyou're thining you can just dump some audio21:07
holsteininto a MIDI file21:07
holsteinand import that into notation software21:08
holsteinand see the music21:08
holsteinand that aint going to happen21:08
holsteinthere were some commercial efforts for that in the past21:08
holsteinthings you could play live21:08
holsteinand would spit out notation21:08
holsteinAFAIK21:08
holsteinthey didnt last21:08
holsteinnor, work all that well21:08
holsteinmarcelC: you really need to do it the old fashioned way21:09
holsteinjust listen21:09
holsteinand transcribe21:09
marcelCI guess that will be a hard work, anyway it is not for me, but a friend who is a teacher of music, but I am his geek, because I fix/repair/mainain his computers21:10
marcelCuhm, okay I'll tell him what I found21:10
holsteinfor any musician21:10
holsteinthat is the best way to go21:10
holsteinit helps develope the ear21:10
holsteinand training on a lot of levels21:10
holsteinyou can use easy programs though21:11
holsteinsuch as audacity21:11
holsteinto slow down passages21:11
holsteinor, EQ them differently21:11
holsteinso as to help hear notes more clearly21:11
holsteinmarcelC: either way, ubuntustudio = ubuntu21:11
holsteinSO, if you already have ubuntu installed21:12
holsteinyou can just install the programs you need21:12
holsteinand go for it :)21:12
holsteinmarcelC: feel free to ask in #opensourcemusicians21:12
marcelCholstein: I personally use sabayon&win. xp, I had some issuies with apt-get, altrough aptitude is better and solved a part of them,  but I can install ubuntu to one of his worksation, but if it can't be the job done this is it usless21:21
marcelCthank you very mutch for explanations21:23
ledah_hi, do you know if i can correct the color of the screen in ubuntu studio i'm using mint but i want to try studio21:27
