[07:07] hello all. I have a question. I recently updated my system with the beta and then the release version of 11.04. Apparently that broke all the 3d apps like blender and wings3d. Is it possible to reload the system from the iso without repartitioning/reformatting the drive? [17:23] hello [17:23] ubuntu channel is too crowded maybe you guys can help me [17:24] I just need to figure out what the problem is [17:25] symptoms include: corrupted screenshots, and desktop background garbles in patches when I create a new icon [17:26] I have the newest NV driver however it also happened when I was operating with nouveau [18:05] falserunes: o/ [18:05] i would suggest #ubuntu-beginners [18:06] or #nouveau [18:13] it's not a setup issue [18:13] ? [18:13] most likely it is an update issue [18:13] update? [18:13] might be a kernel regression or something [18:14] what do you mean [18:14] you could try booting older kernels you have listed in grub [18:14] I actually reinstalled in trying to figure this out [18:14] how did that go? [18:14] let me tell you the backstory [18:14] is it still funky? [18:14] yes [18:15] right [18:15] those drivers are challenging [18:15] i would look for a bug report [18:15] in the past problem [18:15] with your specific hardware [18:15] yes [18:15] well hold on [18:15] and maybe try and find an ubuntu kernel team dev [18:15] see if its even something that can be fixed [18:15] I was trying to reflash my bios [18:15] and as always, let nvidia know that you are having trouble [18:16] thats really where the issue lies [18:16] with nvidia [18:16] falserunes: bios flash might not be a bad idea [18:16] and flashrom didn't work initially [18:16] i have some via hardware that i flashed down a version [18:16] and it really seemed to help with the openchrome driver [18:17] but, on irc, with the dev team's help I patched flashrom and got the flash to work [18:18] do you think, the flash could have effected my video add-in card [18:18] meaning not onboard [18:18] hmmm [18:18] i wouldnt think so [18:19] i mean, we know exactly what the problem is [18:19] the nvidia hardware [18:19] in these time [18:19] when hardware is so cheap [18:19] and its a PCIe card? AGP [18:19] PCIe [18:20] anyways, i would just get a better supported card [18:20] best 40 bucks you'll ever spend :) [18:20] like what card [18:20] you can probably sell the other one to a windows user [18:20] falserunes: something that you ask about [18:20] lots of places [18:20] and google for bug reports about [18:21] AND save the reciept [18:21] ok, thanks [18:21] ive been hanging in #nouveau for a bout a week now [18:21] just listening [18:21] i plan to get an open driver supported dual-head card at some point [18:22] * holstein is a look *before* you leap kind of guy [18:23] the thing is, while my computer was running for a week while we made the patch, I did updates as well so I was trying to eliminate that possibility [18:26] come to think of it, I think it has something to do with the windows decorator [18:27] sorry, window decorator [18:27] ? [18:27] its all going to be the graphics driver i bet [18:27] or compiz [18:27] i mean, set up a custom xorg.conf [18:27] and force the vesa driver [18:27] ok, I'll try that [18:29] i'll be right back [18:34] i'll be darned [18:34] you were right [18:34] so, now you know [18:34] and you can decide what to do about it [18:35] ok, thanks for your help [18:35] i mean, theres nothing wrong with the vesa driver for most stuff [18:35] but, i would just sell that card [18:35] I wanna play wow [18:35] and get an easier, more supported one [18:35] I mean it used to work under an old driver flawwlessly [18:36] falserunes: driver? or driver + kernel config? [18:36] so, it must be me trying to stay on the edge [18:36] its really challenging to troubleshoot that [18:36] and say for sure [18:36] yeah for sure [18:36] you *should* be able to get back to that functionality [18:36] some way or other [18:37] ok, I'll experiment [18:37] falserunes: theres a live hardy disc still available [18:37] you could boot that [18:37] note the kernel [18:37] and the driver* or whatever [18:37] and maybe learn what you need [18:37] could be you blacklist something [18:37] or get a backport module [18:37] who knows [18:37] like nouveau [18:38] it's blacklisted right now [18:38] i still think #nouveau might be a good place to start [18:38] falserunes: do you have an active loco team? [18:39] georgia and tennessee is dead [18:39] so, no [18:39] you can try mine [18:39] #ubuntu-us-nc [18:39] woo hoo north carolina [18:39] :) [19:18] holstein: what card do you recommend? I've got an Nvidia 8600 GTS and I've been having all kinds of problems with video. i.e. pixelation on the screen, X locks and X restarts. I've tried all kinds of different things other than the card. If $40 for a card would fix it, it would be the best $40 I've spent. [20:33] Veloce06: im still researching [20:33] ask me in about a month :) [20:33] holstein: dang, I used to think nvidia was the card to go for. [20:35] Veloce06: depends [20:35] the RT kernels + nvidia can be problematic [20:36] *proprietary drivers i should say [20:36] I'm tired of the problems this card has caused. I used to have nothing but a great experience with ubuntu [20:36] well, if its an older card [20:36] right now I haven't even tried an RT kernel, just using general [20:36] you really cant expect the linux kernel to support older devices [20:37] Veloce06: you probably dont need RT kernel [20:38] holstein: I'm looking at alessio's low also [20:38] right [20:38] if you dont need it [20:38] dont worry about it [20:38] are you using JACK? [20:38] I will be yes [20:38] do you get xruns at the JACK settings you are currently using? [20:38] i would still say [20:38] haven't got that far, because of the video issues [20:38] dont worry til you need it [20:39] maybe, by the time you get around to it [20:39] the -generic kernel will be just fine [20:39] that is a possibility. [20:40] I'm going to look at another nvidia card I have, but again it is about the same age as the one currently. I'm hoping it is a problem with the video hdw/fw of the card and not something else [20:40] Veloce06: i mean, i might be wrong [20:41] but, literally everytime someone says nvidia [20:41] thats the problem* [20:41] holstein: hmmm... [20:41] if intel made a PCIe card [20:41] id have one [20:41] really [20:41] im not interested in crazy gaming performance [20:41] i just want easy out-of-the-box 3d [20:41] and support [20:41] 3d is optional actually* [20:42] i just find that if 3d is working [20:42] I'm not even thinking that much, just reliable performance [20:42] then the drivers tend to be more stable [20:42] intel supplies information [20:43] so, that makes supporting the devices *much* easier [20:44] holtstein: I'm just stuck now, wanting something that works and the video screen doesn't freak out and flicker all the time and doesn't restart X on a whim. Then I can concentrate on some other projects or at least doing more with sound etc [20:45] I've asked on so many forums and lists about these problems and nothing is a sure fix. If I could just get a card that work with good basic performance I would be happy. (Dual monitors of course.) [20:46] ill let you know what i come up with [20:46] but, its not a top priority right now [20:47] np [20:48] holstein: thanks for you help. gotta head home now. [20:48] Veloce06: sure :) [21:05] hello! [21:05] marcelC: o/ [21:06] can ubuntu studio convert Mp3 and Waw to MIDI? [21:06] sure [21:06] but [21:06] you dont need ubuntustudio for that [21:06] and actually, converting to MIDI is trickier [21:06] and a matter of what exactly you have and want to end up with [21:06] can you give me the name of the program? [21:07] I wish to convert .mp3 and wav to midi for Sibelius [21:07] you want soundconverter [21:07] for mp3 to wav [21:07] BUT, getting wav to MIDI [21:07] thats not going to happen the way you think it is [21:07] you're thining you can just dump some audio [21:07] into a MIDI file [21:08] and import that into notation software [21:08] and see the music [21:08] and that aint going to happen [21:08] there were some commercial efforts for that in the past [21:08] things you could play live [21:08] and would spit out notation [21:08] AFAIK [21:08] they didnt last [21:08] nor, work all that well [21:09] marcelC: you really need to do it the old fashioned way [21:09] just listen [21:09] and transcribe [21:10] I guess that will be a hard work, anyway it is not for me, but a friend who is a teacher of music, but I am his geek, because I fix/repair/mainain his computers [21:10] uhm, okay I'll tell him what I found [21:10] for any musician [21:10] that is the best way to go [21:10] it helps develope the ear [21:10] and training on a lot of levels [21:11] you can use easy programs though [21:11] such as audacity [21:11] to slow down passages [21:11] or, EQ them differently [21:11] so as to help hear notes more clearly [21:11] marcelC: either way, ubuntustudio = ubuntu [21:12] SO, if you already have ubuntu installed [21:12] you can just install the programs you need [21:12] and go for it :) [21:12] marcelC: feel free to ask in #opensourcemusicians [21:21] holstein: I personally use sabayon&win. xp, I had some issuies with apt-get, altrough aptitude is better and solved a part of them, but I can install ubuntu to one of his worksation, but if it can't be the job done this is it usless [21:23] thank you very mutch for explanations [21:27] hi, do you know if i can correct the color of the screen in ubuntu studio i'm using mint but i want to try studio
