* AlanBell files bug against sense of humour of the web content team08:22
AlanBelloh actually maybe not, marked invalid in ubuntu-website and new in ubuntu-website-content08:23
ali1234i'd say their sense of humour is working ok08:23
DJonesStupid Win 7 UAC, without switching it off there doesn't seem to be a way of telling the system to always allow an app to run without clicking yes every time08:33

daubersMorning09:12
dogmatic69o/09:13
dogmatic69what is the best way to ssh into a load balanced cluster09:14
dwatkinsdogmatic69: you would probably ssh into one machine at a time09:15
dogmatic69:(09:15
dwatkinsdogmatic69: why the sad face?09:15
dogmatic69well there is no static ip for it09:15
dogmatic69s/it/the machines09:16
dogmatic69so that means logging into aws each time to get the public dns09:16
dwatkinsdogmatic69: dyndns?09:16
dogmatic69no pretty .ssh/config09:16
dogmatic69dont know if that is the correct solution09:17
dwatkinsdogmatic69: it probably isn't, but it would allow you to have a hostname which always reflects the IP address on a single interface of a particular machine09:17
dogmatic69ye09:18
dwatkinsthere should be simpler ways, like having the hostname of each individual part of the cluster09:18
dwatkinsWhat's aws? Is that the cluster management system? Are the actual machines in a subnet of their own?09:18
dogmatic69the thing is aws changes the public dns and pvt ip every reboot09:18
* dwatkins has used Platform and SGI's cluster managers09:18
dogmatic69amazon web services09:18
dwatkinsahh09:19
dwatkinsdo they have any documentation on this?\09:19
dwatkinssomeone else must have asked the same question09:19
dogmatic69loads of unanswered questions in the help09:19
dwatkinstime to e-mail support09:19
dogmatic69£100 per minute or something silly :P09:20
dwatkinscharging for e-mail support would be insane09:20
dogmatic69either you have no support, or you have paid support it seems09:20
dwatkinsah09:24
oimonwhy do u need to reboot :P09:27
* oimon checks the uptime on his servers09:27

dogmatic69kernel panic09:29
dogmatic69running m$ server09:29
oimonif they are public facing then kernel security updates, yep (unless you want to use ksplice), but it's still not that regular09:30
oimona lot of my internal servers haven't seen a reboot in a long time09:31
BigRedSI've spoken to people with failover clusters who want nodes rebooted regularly to check that a) failover works and b) they come back up again09:31

diploMorning all, I know a few of your are web devs. Anyone got a tool or way of grabbing all id's and class's from a project10:08
diploBasically got a huge amount of legacy CSS that I don't want to pick through line by line and remove old crud10:09
dutchieregular expressions :)10:09
dutchie"now you have two problems"10:09
diploheh, already got a page open on reg exp10:09
diploIt's not my strong point10:10
diplo:)10:10
diploThat's why I put it out here to see if anyone knew of app that already did it :)10:10
_serial_there are some pretty good videos on youtube for regexp10:10
ali1234so you want a list of all classes/id defined in the html, and a list of all the classes/ids in the css, and then compute what's in css but not html?10:11
popeymorning all10:12
diploThat would be great ali1234 but I'd be happy with just getting the classes/id's out of the PHP/html code10:13
ali1234well is it php or html?10:13
ali1234if its php you have pretty much no chance10:13
brobostigonmorning popey10:14
diplophp pages with html code inside, use a framework called codeigniter10:14
ali1234diplo: i think you'll have to resort to grep -R class * or similar10:17
ali1234if it's php10:18
diploheh, I was thinking that10:22
diploGood thing is once it's done all the codes the same10:22
diploBasically 2-3 other people created some code and used a lot of old CSS and left it in there, this new template has same ID's classes etc everywhere so makes life easier for design10:23
diploJust nobody documented anything10:23
diplo:/10:23
kazademorning peeps10:32

brobostigonmonring kazade10:33
kazadepopey, just listened to uupc, great show as usual :)10:33
oimoni watched a bit of the live stream on my phone during ad-break in a tv programme - video was good, audio a bit quiet - might try installing the android ustream app next time10:34
popeythanks kazade10:35
popeyYeah, not sure if/when we'll do video again10:35
popeywe only really did it because I happened to be at home that day so could set it up, and I have decent internet at Studio B, tony has rubbish internet at Studio A.10:36
BigRedSThat did confuse me - the audio on ustream seemed much more variable in volume than the audio stream10:37
oimontbh i only get to listen to the show on the train - i never watch live streams of stuff normally10:37
* oimon is grappling with flexlm issues today :(10:38
popeythe ustream audio was just from the mic on the webcam10:38
popeythe audio stream came direct from the mixer10:38
popeyI suspect if we did it again we'd take the audio from the mixer to ustream too10:38
BigRedSahh10:39

BigRedSif you really want you can make tmps noexec, but nearly all Bad Things seem to be written in Perl now, which gets around that11:21
BigRedSIn fact, Debian used to have a reasonable article on securing Debian11:22
BigRedSbut the last time I saw it it didn't appear to have changed since about etch11:22
brobostigoni see, hmm.11:22
BigRedSAlso, I like unattended-upgrades, but many people don't11:23
brobostigonso that automticllyupgrades packages,without myintervention.11:24
brobostigonwhy is tripwire, trying to install exim?11:26
BigRedSyeah, but you can blacklist packages. Mysql-server, for example, tends to prefer manual installation11:28
BigRedSI've no idea - I've only installed it once or twice, but that'll have been on postfix machines where it was quite happy11:28
BigRedSunder Debian, though. Not sure if it's packaged differently for Ubuntu11:28

millosince I've upgraded to 11.04 I've been having weird problems with the WIFI.  I'm pretty new to ubuntu - 1-2 months, but I'm completely stumped on this.  Is the right/best place to ask for help?12:08
selinuxiummillo, here and if anyone can help they will and #ubuntu12:08
milloawesome12:08
milloin a nutshell - I can see the list of networks in Network Manager.  I can select it, but it just tries to connect (little wifi connecting icon is animating), then after about 2 minutes I just get the error message "Wireless Network Disconnected"12:09
milloI've checked WPA Personal password many times - defo right one, and it just happened randomly.12:10
BigRedSmillo: try sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager restart12:10
milloNight before it was working, now it's not (this was about a week ago, first chance I've had to connect using ethernet)12:10
BigRedSI find that about nine times in ten that fixes that12:10

BigRedSmillo: if you run    lspci    in a terminal, it'll list a bunch of your hardware12:13
BigRedSincluding a wireless chipset12:13
selinuxiumBigRedS, Beat ya!12:14
BigRedShaha, you distracted me with that chrome comment! :)12:14
millojust restarted lappy as well - still not connecting via wifi12:15
selinuxiumBigRedS, was a fun gig at the Barfly... :)12:15
BigRedSmm, It's one of the things I miss about not being in London any more, I used to live ~5mins from Camden12:16
selinuxiumCamden = FUN x 100012:16
selinuxiumI do like it there..12:16
BigRedSthough, if I'm honest, I did end up getting a bit bored of live music :) When it's on your doorstep, and *every night* there's someone wanting to borrow some floor post gig, so you inevitably go to the gig...12:16
selinuxiumlol12:16
selinuxiumUs musicians are a romany bunch...12:17
millois there anything else I can try?  my only option I can think of is to format, and I've already had to do that twice since I started using Ubuntu - would rather avoid it if possible..12:19
selinuxiumhave you done an   lspci?12:21
milloerm... i'll say no - as I'm VERY new to anything ubuntu/linuxy...12:22
milloI take it I just type sudo lspci in terminal?12:22
selinuxiumno need for sudo..12:22

awilkinsI found the straw that broke the back of Unity for me...12:33
awilkinsWhenever you switch workspaces, Eclipse locks your edit windows.12:34
ali1234what does that mean?12:34
awilkinsI'm not saying it's a Unity issue. But GNOME doesn't do it (except occasionally when the screensaver kicks in). So GNOME it is....12:34
awilkinsThe Java editor goes into read-only mode - the tab greys out, you can't edit the content.12:35
ali1234why does it do that?12:35
ali1234i mean is there any situation where you want it to do that?12:36
awilkinsali1234, When your file is read-only, I suppose, and you don't want the appearance of editing it12:36
ali1234but changing workspace can't make file read only12:37
awilkinsI know this... neither does the screensaver kicking in12:37

daubersawilkins, However...... I have known eclipse to stop you being able to type in a window at random points in the past. Used to have to go into terminal or gedit or somesuch and type in some grabage, go back to eclipse and all would be well12:43

dogmatic69reading about using 'ssh-add ~/.ssh/id_rsa' to not have to type the pw all the time, is this a good idea?14:59
BigRedSit's normally advised that you use passphrases on the keys15:00
BigRedSbut passphraseless key auth is probably still better than just password15:00
dogmatic69?15:00
BigRedSthat command is to add a key, for key-based SSH auth15:01
AlanBelldogmatic69: it is a good idea15:01
BigRedSrather than password (or 'keyboard-interactive')15:01
AlanBellBigRedS: you can unlock it for the session15:01
AlanBellor unlock it every time15:01
dogmatic69i want to just log in once and then not again till i log out / exit the server15:02
dogmatic69this is the article i was reading http://bashcurescancer.com/setting_up_ssh_keys_for_access_without_password.html15:02
dogmatic69my id_rsa has a pw on it15:03
awilkinsdogmatic69, That won't stop you from having to use a password for sudo prompts, etc15:03
dogmatic69sudo is ok15:03
awilkinsdogmatic69, But it does mean that you can unlock your key once and have as many ssh sessions connect as you like15:03
dogmatic69its just ssh all the time15:03
awilkinsIt's also more secure than password15:04
awilkinsMany ssh cracker bots will just give up if your SSH server is configured to refuse keyboard-interactive auth15:04
dogmatic69well... i think there is another piece to the puzzle... this is not for my desktop15:04

diploandylockran, ref your blog post, you don't run a proxy on your router do you ? We had a similair issue at my last place and it was the proxy breaking the downloads.15:41
MiLLohi.. are there any wifi geniuses here?15:47
andylockrandiplo: no I don't - good call though15:49
MiLLoin a nutshell - I can see the list of networks in Network Manager.  I can select it, but it just tries to connect (little wifi connecting icon is animating), then after about 2 minutes I just get the error message "Wireless Network Disconnected"15:49
andylockranI've bypassed the router and still get the same problem - but my ISP claim that there are no errors on the connection, and that they're not 'traffic shaping' my connection.15:50

TheOpenSourcererAhh - Thanks kazade the penny has just dropped I think.15:54
TheOpenSourcererTY15:54

KrisDouglasHello everyone, I have a tape drive in one of the old servers here, basically I want to try and rip the contents of this windows backup. The server is currently booting ubuntu and the backup is from server 2k3. I am assuming I can use tar to extract the contents?16:11
daubersandylockran, Tried using the thing that is the opposite of wireshark to see if it's a packets/second issue on the router?16:16
andylockrandaubers: nope, not heard of that?16:16
daubersandylockran, Ostinato I think.... instead of watching for packets, it generates them16:17
daubersandylockran, I reckon my belkin has an issue that causes it to crash when it's buffer is full, as I can replicate it with ostinato and has similar issues to what you describe16:18

Azelphurdoes anyone know if it costs lots of import money if I buy something from a shop in NL and have it shipped here?19:27
MiLLohmm, that sort of worked gord.19:27
MiLLoit created a second screen - but it won't let me open stuff onto it - or drag across...19:29
MiLLolike I want to use it to watch films on my TV19:29
MiLLoit created a second screen - but it won't let me open stuff onto it - or drag across... like i want to use it to watch stuff on my tv19:29
gordMiLLo, back in the settings set it to use twinview rather than separate x screens19:29
MiLLowon't that mean it shows the same screen on both?19:30
MiLLoah19:31
MiLLono19:31
MiLLojust read up on it19:31
gordit just has a silly name ;)19:32
gordit can do that though, if you want. but you don't19:32
MiLLothere is one issue i've always had with this19:32
MiLLoand it stems back from windows19:32
MiLLomy tv is 1080p - it's a 42" LED 3d tv - so it's full hd.  yet whenever I set it to 1080p resolution from dualscreen - the resolution seems "oversized" like it's bigger than the tv can cope with?19:33
MiLLotried on 4-5 different tv's and it's the same problem19:33
gordhonestly? your tv isn't 1080p19:38
gordi'v seen this a lot, they can take a 1080p signal, but they just don't have enough physical pixels19:38
MiLLois that the case for all TV's then?19:38
gordnot all, but a hell of a lot19:38
MiLLosigh..  I was so hoping this TV would be able to take it!19:39
gordyou *might* be able to play with settings on your tv to resize the 1080p image to whatever resolution your monitor is, on one of my tv's i had to find out its actual resolution and set a custom modeline and horrible stuff like that19:39
MiLLoi think i did that before on windows - manually shrank it slightly19:40
MiLLoanything i played looked HORRIBLE19:40
MiLLoconsidering I'm losing like a real life centimetre top and bottom - it's not worth it19:40
gordyup, if your playing video. just leave it alone, hopefully you won't notice because overscan is factored in to the video editing19:40
MiLLohere's a question - best video player for ubuntu?19:41
MiLLoespecially for both MKV's and subtitles19:41
MiLLoi'm trying ubuntu vlc19:41
gordtotem, the default, will handle MKV's and subtitles just fine19:41
MiLLoand it's disappointing compared to the windows version - am I best just using WINE VLC?19:41
gordno, the windows and ubuntu versions of vlc are the same19:42
MiLLo? not functionally19:42
MiLLoi can't slow down/speed up subtitles on ubuntuvlc19:42
gordyeah you can19:42
MiLLowhereas the windows one I could do all of that easily19:42
gordits the same source code just compiled for ubuntu19:43
MiLLo??? really?  do you have any idea how?19:43
gordlook in the options19:43
kvarleyMiLLo: The most powerful player I find is mplayer - you may want to try umplayer or smplayer for a nice GUI. VLC will be the easiest for you to use - you may want to install it from their PPA19:43
MiLLoah19:43
MiLLoooops19:43
MiLLowant to laugh?  I have been running totem thinking it's vlc19:43
gordi personally use XBMC for outputing video to my tv19:43
* MiLLo blushes19:43
gordyeah thats... quite a difference19:43
MiLLo:(19:44
MiLLoI'm very new, still learning how to set up stuff..  thought I'd made it default!!!19:44
MiLLoXBMC any good?19:44
MiLLolike I say - I like to configure subtitles and play MKV's more than anything else19:44
gordi like it, its for home theatres though really19:44
MiLLohow're you defining home theatre?19:45
gordit has a 10ft gui19:45
MiLLoooooook :P19:45
MiLLoi just typed xbmc into ubuntu software thingy19:45
gordits not in there, you have to install a ppa :(19:46
MiLLoah19:46
MiLLogoogle i take it?19:46
gordeh? no no, just get the ppa from launchpad19:46
MiLLolaunchpad?19:47
gordhttp://launchpad.net/~team-xbmc i think19:47
MiLLoyeah... thanks :D19:47
MiLLoit's telling me to add software sources19:47
MiLLoi've little idea how to do this19:48
MiLLois using the terminal version on XBMC website likely to be easier?19:48
gordno19:49
kvarleyMiLLo: To add software sources open Terminal and type "sudo apt-add-repository ppa:team-xbmc/ppa && sudo apt-get update" (minus quotes)19:49
MiLLothanks!19:51
MiLLoi think it's installing now19:51
kvarleyMiLLo: That won't install xmbc, just add the sources. Afterwards you will have to install it19:51
MiLLoapt-get install xbmc ??19:51
kvarleyMiLLo: "sudo apt-get install xmbc"19:52
MiLLoyeah19:52
kvarleyMiLLo: You beat me to it19:52
MiLLoi foret the sudo19:52
MiLLoi'm SLOWLY getting the hang of terminal19:52
kvarleyMiLLo: You'll be able to view the stuff available from that PPA in your Ubuntu Software Centre too19:52
MiLLoawesome19:52
MiLLowe needs an idiots guide to ubuntu19:53
MiLLo:D19:53
kvarleyMiLLo: Not an idiots guide, I wouldn't call anybody an idiot lol. Learning a new OS takes time, people seem to forget that when coming from another one19:53
MiLLohaha19:54
MiLLohow long have you guys been using ubuntu?19:55
jibadeehaMiLLo, about 2 years here .. but been using Linux since Slackware 2.119:57
MiLLonice... i quite like it, but just the occasional thing on it bugs me19:57
kvarleyMiLLo: 6 years I think, 4 as my main OS.19:58
MiLLook19:58
jibadeehaMiLLo, yeah there a few things that bug me but then again there is more that bugs me about Windows and other Linux distros i've used ... Ubuntu fairs well for me19:58
MiLLoterminal has finished installing xbmc19:58
MiLLobut i can't see it in my software list when i press super/windows key19:59
kvarleyMiLLo: type in "xmbc" and hit enter and it should load20:01

MiLLoit won't let me edit/save it20:13
MiLLoi'm not sure how to open via terminal /open as sudo through the actual file browser :(20:13
