[21:20] Any special magic to make a very slow LiveCD boot faster? I keep getting udevsettle timeouts. [21:21] (Tried with an LTS Live CD and a Maverick Live USB. Both worked on other systems. And the current system still boots into Windows XP, so the hardware's good...) [21:21] get a new computer...? [21:21] j/k [21:22] faster cd drive? [21:22] though a live usb shouldnt depend on that... [21:37] It appears the problem may somehow be the hard disk. [21:38] The USB eventually did boot (after about 12 minutes) but it doesn't see the hard disk. [21:38] USB doesn't need the hard disk... [21:38] so the CPU is just slow? [21:38] whats the speed? [21:39] Yeah, but I'm having a chicken and egg problem (and may resort to digging up another stick): This machine has a fresh install of Windows XP but it's a Dell. It doesn't have any of the Dell drivers it needs. [21:40] Since it can't get out to the network without the drivers, I thought: Boot into Linux, and download everything to the Windows partition. It's worked for me before. [21:40] kjcole, that is an intriguing issue.. [21:41] Someone scrawled on it 3.4 GHz / 2 GB RAM. ;-) [21:41] I have to run to the other room to check out if that is, in fact, truthiness. [21:42] lol [21:42] it could e a 3.4GHz celeron from 2002 [21:43] that'd be slow... very little L2 [21:43] Manufacture date on sticker (not hand scrawled) says 2006. (Dell Dimension 5150, to be precise.) [21:44] Under Windows it boots up at a reasonable speed. [21:44] reasonable for windows or Linux? :P [21:44] Heh. [21:45] Given the comparison is a Linux USB stick... [21:45] BRB [21:46] maco, whats the sponsors website? [21:47] http://reports.qa.ubuntu.com/reports/sponsoring/ [21:49] maco, thx [21:50] i still don't have my luggage back from JFK, AA keeps telling me it's with the delivery company, but the delivery company hasn't called me or delivered it yet === kjcole_ is now known as kjcole [21:56] Is there something to force a running system to try to wake a hard drive that it doesn't see? [22:12] whats dmesg say? [22:12] kjcole, ^^ [22:18] Sorry. Was in a chat with Dell. No help there. Let me look. [22:19] Sadly, lots of read errors. [22:20] What's the preferred pastebin? [22:23] http://pastebin.com/EBL3EZ7u [22:25] I'm loathe to reboot into Windows, but I guess I'll run a scan and see if I can improve on things. [22:25] Signing off (rebooting) for now.
