[10:37] Morning. [10:40] morning JonathanD [10:40] hey rmg51 [10:41] o/ [13:36] Morning everyone [14:09] Isn't it wonderful ?? It is FRIDAY! It's Friday. [14:09] o/ [14:09] teddy-dbear has transformed into a BOT! [14:10] one day before the end of the world ;-) [15:40] hi peeps [15:41] o/ [15:44] wassup ChinnoDog [15:45] nuffin much. Got me a mexican hot chocolate and an apple danish. [15:51] nice [16:08] ssweeny: What do you do for Canonical now? [16:09] ChinnoDog, i'm in the OEM solutions group [16:09] basically i customize ubuntu for new hardware [16:10] For whose hardware? [16:11] can't say [16:12] well, i can say that for instance my group created the netbook interface for the dell mini [16:12] so things like that [16:13] Ah. So, you are customizing it for vendors. That is what I wanted to know. [16:13] Do they pay you to do this or does Canonical do this to push Ubuntu? [16:13] both i guess [16:14] some of the stuff ends up in ubuntu [16:14] like unity-2d, which i believe came out of the oem group [16:15] But I mean when someone like Dell wants to sell a laptop with Ubuntu do they pay your group to cut them an Ubuntu image/install or does Canonical volunteer to make one so Dell can ship Ubuntu? [16:16] i.e. Who is actually paying your salary? [16:22] i believe that dell pays for the customization [16:22] but i've only been here a week so what do i know? [16:36] ssweeny: are you doing ARM builds? [16:36] ChinnoDog, not at the moment. why? [16:36] Just wondering [16:36] Any non x86 architectures? [16:37] ubuntu already has ports to arm and powerpc [16:37] and debian has a ton more [16:38] actually the ubuntu powerpc port may be unmaintained now [16:40] I meant your group. ARe you doing non x86 customizations? [16:46] AMD is releasing a 128-bit CPU this year? Sweet. [16:47] When can I get Ubuntu 128-bit edition? [16:50] MS is working on 128-bit Win 8. [16:50] * ChinnoDog expects Ubuntu 128-bit released tomorrow [16:54] * ssweeny gets right on that [16:55] \o/ [16:55] I want 640-bit [16:55] that ought to be enough for anyone. [17:25] Oh. Its not just this year, its next month. http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/display/20110307165713_AMD_Finalizes_Shipment_Dates_for_Next_Gen_Chips.html [17:25] Title: AMD Finalizes Shipment Dates for Next-Gen Chips - X-bit labs (at www.xbitlabs.com) [17:27] man we just got 64-bit working right on the desktop [17:30] Good. This can be an excercise in portability. The same things that make the 64-bit version work should make 128-bit work, correct? [17:31] There isn't a whole lot of 64-bit only software but there is 32-bit, so just need to write the compatibility library for running 32-bit code on 128-bit CPU and it should be pretty much the same experience. [17:34] * ssweeny does not really see the utility of a 128-bit cpu at this point [17:34] all it will really do is bloat software [17:42] I can't tell if there are x86-128 instructions. Maybe the architecture is 128-bit but the instructions are still 64-bit. [17:43] Theoretically having a 128-bit wide data path should allow you to process 64-bit instructions twice as fast, right? [17:44] it's not just the instructions [17:44] you also have pointers and ints [18:28] and monkeys and daffodils [18:29] those too [18:31] no unicorns? [18:33] unicorns are unrelated [18:35] unicorns are orthogonal to instruction set size [18:35] everyone knows that [19:05] how about cookies? [19:05] cookies are good anytime :-[ [19:08] cookies are apparently a sometimes food [19:20] cookies are an anytime food :-D [19:25] that's what i thought [19:53] cookies++ [19:58] I could use a nap [20:02] naps++ [20:02] naps++ [20:11] cookies++ [20:11] naps++ [20:12] cookies then a nap :-D [20:26] so sleepy [20:26] * ChinnoDog slaps ChinnoDog around a bit with a large trout [22:21] What are you all up to this weekend? [22:26] PACS on Sat. [22:26] if the world doesn't end first [22:28] The world isn't ending until 6 PM, so you've got plenty of time to his PACS first. [22:30] just in time for dinner [22:32] So.. Why is the rapture tomorrow? [22:33] some dumbass said so :-/ [22:33] dinner time [22:35] ChinnoDog: noah's ark anniversary, i believe [22:41] lol. I'm reading the wikipedia page on it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_end_times_prediction [22:41] Title: 2011 end times prediction - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (at en.wikipedia.org) [22:43] hehe. Rapture Relief Fund! [22:55] Wow, his argument for it being 7000 years after the flood is a bit dubious.
