bioterrorError404NotFound, i am now for a moment00:24

virgohi, when i have one folder open i cant open home directory by clicking the home icon on top left10:56
coalwatervirgo, what does it do then?10:57
virgoit will open the directory window that was home directory before i moved to another folder in that window10:59
virgoso i cant open 2 directory windows with this home directory button10:59
virgoit does not recognize that i have moved away from the home directory location in that window10:59
coalwaterwhat do u mean u moved the home11:04
virgoi mean when the home directory opens in window11:05
virgoi go to other location inside that window11:05
coalwaterit opens the new location in a separate window?11:05
virgobut ubuntu still thinks that this is home directory window and doesnt open another11:05
virgoit would be good if ubuntu opens new window every time i click the home directory icon11:06
virgobut it just activates the window it opened for me at the first time i clicked the icon11:07
coalwaterok let me get this straight, u open nautilus, open few folders, and then click home and u want it to open a new home in a new window, (for file moving/copying i presume?)11:09
virgoyes11:14
virgonautilus is the file/folder explorer program?11:15
virgowell, i guess it should do like it does, but i just dont like it11:17
coalwatervirgo, u still here?12:25
coalwatersorry i kinda got distracted by work12:25
coalwateri have two ways to help you if you're still here12:25
virgoi am12:38
virgowell, i have to afk most of the time atm12:39
virgobut you can say, what you have in mind12:39
virgoi guess one solution would be to make 2 shortcuts to open 2 folders12:40
coalwatervirgo, first, it would really help if you say the the name of the person who you're talking to, it gives me a notification, and ok, first way you could try pressing ctrl+12:46
coalwaterctrl+N , sorry pressed enter by mistake12:46
coalwaterit opens a new window and in the home by default12:46
coalwatersecond way ( the way i prefer more ) you press F3, it splits the window to 2 panes, and u can navigate each separately, and open tabs in each , i do that a lot especially when one pane is local and the other is remote (FTP or SFTP)12:47
Sidewinder1coalwater, That F3 is great! I never knew that and I've been using Ubuntu since Gutsy. Is there somewhere that lists all function key bindings as well as other key combinations?13:07
coalwaterSidewinder1, i don't really remember how i found out about it, but it's in the view menu, called extra pane13:08
coalwaterSidewinder1, you can use tabs too, but i think ud probably know about that too13:10
Sidewinder1Thank you very much!13:10
coalwaterthe other ones are only navigational, f6 for example switches active pane13:10
coalwateralt + <=  back alt+ => forward , alt+ up =parent13:11
coalwatermost of them are listed in the menus13:11
coalwateror all i guess13:12
Sidewinder1coalwater, Yes, I am aware of some but it's kinda' a shame that there seems to be no all inclusive list.13:12
Sidewinder1coalwater, There probably is, somewhere, I just haven't run across it; if I did, I probably simply forgot. :-(13:13
coalwaterhttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bug/410288 wish this bug could get fixed13:21
ubot2Launchpad bug 410288 in gvfs "Nautilus does not handle FTP timeouts well" [Low,Triaged]13:21
coalwatersadly it's written in c or something, i can't fix it my self13:21
virgothanks coalwater, the F3 does the job for me :)13:28
coalwaterok good13:28
virgoi hope i wont forget it :p13:28
coalwaterit's in the view menu13:28
coalwaterview > extra pane13:28
virgoyes13:29
virgothe ctrl+n opens more than one window13:30
coalwatervirgo,  just 1 window , but if u press it more than once it opens more13:36
virgoi think i must not hold down the ctrl+n more than half second or so13:38
virgoelse it opens more windows13:38
coalwaterhold ctrl then do 1 key stroke on the letter N13:39
virgoahh, it just opens duplicate from active window13:41
coalwatervirgo, ctrl+N usually means 'new' in most applications, in nautilus it means open a new window14:04
virgook14:22
virgoi think the ubuntu software installing system is still not simple enough14:29
virgobecause there are many application not in software center and need manual install14:30
virgoand this can be a pain14:30
Sidewinder1virgo, Do you use Synaptic Package Manager?14:30
virgoubuntu software center14:31
virgowell, i do apt-get command too sometimes14:31
virgoand still have to download, extract, copy, install14:32
virgosome things manually14:32
Sidewinder1Synaptic is the graphical front end for apt. Last time I checked it listed over 33,000 pieces of various software available. System--> Administration--> Synaptic14:33
coalwatervirgo, what are you trying to install14:47
coalwaterthere's this annoying bug, but i don't know what i should call it, it's when you call somethign from the sound menu for example like rhythmbox, or open a file , sometimes the program that should be opened doesn't aquire focus as it should, and when i want to close it, and i press the x button it closes the window below it, which in my case is usually firefox with loads of tabs open, which is very annoying, is there any one aware of any acti15:17
coalwaterve bug that is talking about this issue or not ?.15:17
Sidewinder1coalwater, I've never experienced the bug to which you refer; however in Firefox there is a config in preferrences to reopen FF with the tabs that were open when closed.Doesn't solve the prob. but might help with the aftereffects.15:25
coalwaterSidewinder1, i know it repoens but it is annoying :D15:26
Sidewinder1Know what you mean. :-(15:27
coalwaterthere was a confirm on close box, but i don't know what happened to i15:41
coalwaterit15:41
nlsthznOk, I purchased an application in software center in 11.04, now reverted back to 10.04... anyway to install the app I paid for?!15:47
Sidewinder1What app?15:50
nlsthznSidewinder1: Volleybrawl :p15:50
Sidewinder1nlsthzn, Not familiar with that one; but if it was specifically written for 11.04 it might not work. Just try it in 10.04 if it doesn't work contact the supplier and if they won't provide a work-around, raise HELL. You did, afterall pay for it.15:53
nlsthznSidewinder1: the issue is that the software center in 10.04 doesn't give me the option to install applications from sources you need to pay for... so regardless if it works or not I cannot install it...15:54
Sidewinder1nlsthzn, Not that it'll solve your problem with this specific software, it won't. But I would respectfully suggest that you use: System--> Administration--> Synaptic Package Manager. It's superior to software center.15:57
nlsthznSidewinder1: your advice is irrelevant to my problem and also irrelevant period... I cannot see how you would suggest that...15:57
Sidewinder1nlsthzn, Synaptic is simply a front-end GUI for the command line "apt-get".15:58
nlsthznSidewinder1: if needed I will then use apt-get15:58
Sidewinder1Sorry for trying to be of assistence.15:58
nlsthznSidewinder1: sorry for sounding ungrateful, not my intention... thanks for wanting to help15:58
nlsthznit is appreciated!15:59
Sidewinder1No prob. :-)15:59
nlsthznSidewinder1: just note as this is "beginners" anything that can be done with software center should be done by ... well software center :p15:59
coalwateri think i've read there's something to install pre purchased apps, but i dont remember where15:59
nlsthzncoalwater: I will continue the google thing, cheers16:00
coalwaternlsthzn, in software center, choose file menu, i think ull find it there16:00
coalwaterfile > install previous purchases16:01
Sidewinder1coalwater, Wow, I never knew that!16:02
coalwaterguess i just look around a lot :P16:03
nlsthzncoalwater: nope... I only have a grayed out option for install... using Lucid... and from the creators at OMGUbuntu it seems it is for 10.10 and above... cheers16:03
coalwateri dont think there was a purchase option back then16:04
holsteinnlsthzn: what about a PPA for a newer software center in 10.04 ?16:04
holsteinhttps://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-center for example16:05
holsteini think thats the deal though... 10.04 didnt have that functionality yet*16:05
nlsthzncoalwater: there isn't16:05
nlsthznholstein: which is ironic as 10.04 is the flagship product :/16:05
holsteinwell, its the LTS16:06
* nlsthzn waves at ApOgEE ... Hey Commander Keen :p16:06
holsteinthe center wasnt for that pupose back then16:06
nlsthznholstein: I am sure it is more than matured to be added (or made available somehow)16:07
holsteinnlsthzn: they wont rev it that far. anything really16:07
holsteinPPA's are an option for that though, in theory16:07
nlsthznholstein: funny that noone has done it then :/16:08
holsteinwell, not very many people are where you are, reverting to 10.0416:08
holsteini do know, all of those issues are being addressed16:08
nlsthznholstein: and what about those that chose to stay...16:09
nlsthznnot the best thanks for using LTS is it :p16:09
holsteini mean, what if you buy an app, and want to move to fedora for example16:09
holsteinnlsthzn: but you're not using the LTS. the LTS didnt have that functionality16:09
holsteinyou are asking to port functionality back to the LTS16:09
holsteinand thats do-able, but not trivial. especially for something as core as the software center16:10
nlsthznholstein: ... k ... just wondering that if there was any apps people saw others using and they where on LTS it is sad they won't get the oppertunity to use them because the functionality isn't given to them...16:11
holsteinnlsthzn: seems like i remember reading that everything syncs with your ubuntuone account. maybe someone it the ubuntuone channel might have encountered this16:11
holsteineverything = your software purchases16:12
nlsthznholstein: I know music does... but not seeing anything about the app ... maybe I will ask16:12
nlsthznthanks16:13
holsteinwhat you are trying to do is the equivalent of asking the firefox 3 version in 10.04 to do something firefox4 does16:13
holsteinpersonally, i just use a PPA to get FF4 in 10.0416:13
nlsthznholstein: I understand that.. however, FF4 could be added to 10.04 or like you said, there are PPA's for it at least (btw, could you point me to such a ppa :p for FF)16:14
holsteinhttps://launchpad.net/~mozillateam/+archive/firefox-stable is the one i use16:15
holsteinalso, im wondering if https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-center adds puchase functionality to the software center in lucid16:16
holsteinpurchase*16:16
holsteinyou could always message the maintainer16:16
nlsthznholstein: from the net they said they would support 10.10 and 11.04... but I think it has all to do with the fact that you have to purchase it (and in those distro's you can)16:18
holsteinright. 10.04 did *not* have purchase functionality by default16:18
nlsthznholstein: and it seems the functionallity isn't availble in 10.04 in any way16:19
holsteinnlsthzn: you checked on that PPA ?16:20
Sidewinder1nlsthzn, And since you did purchase it they certainly should supply you with another copy that you can install it 10.10; if they won't, as I said earlier, I'd raise hell!16:20
JackyAlcineSidewinder1, like an upgraded version?16:21
holsteinSidewinder1: 10.04* thats the issue16:21
Sidewinder1Perhaps, he paid for it; they should be more than willing to help solve his problem.16:21
nlsthznThey did say works in 10.10 and greater... I will check out the other PPA... just installing FF4 quickly :p16:22
holsteinsure, the vendor should, and they say clearly what versions are supported, and 10.04 aint one of them ^16:22
Sidewinder1holstein, Didn't he state earlier that "they" said it would work in 10.10 and 11.04?16:22
holsteinSidewinder1: yeah, but nlsthzn is interested in 10.04 support16:22
Sidewinder1OIC, 1016:23
* nlsthzn isn't to bothered about a $3 app... the game sucks actually :p however just wondering about the implication of not letting all the 10.04 users purchase stuff16:23
Sidewinder1.0416:23
holsteinyup16:23
Sidewinder1my bad16:23
holsteinnlsthzn: theres a reason why that was not pushed to the LTS. it wasnt ready yet16:23
holsteintheres not implication really, it just wasnt ready16:24
JackyAlcineIndeed.16:24
nlsthznholstein: again... 1 year after release it is ready... and the implication is I can't get the software that is there for purcashing... that is money I can't spend, and who ever can't receive16:25
holsteinthats always the case. to stay with the LTS, or take advantage of some new technology16:25
Sidewinder1JackyAlcine, Sounds like Tealk16:25
holsteinvia PPA, you can only do so much16:25
holsteinthe stability of the LTS is its own perk*16:25
Sidewinder1From Stargate...SG1.16:25
holsteinnlsthzn: core components dont get updated like that16:25
holsteinnlsthzn: for example, you are having a serious issue with a purchase. you cant downgrade, or run it in another distro16:26
holsteinthese are things that, in theory, will be adressed before the software center version in the next LTS16:26
nlsthzn... great... so rolling release is crap cause it will break... and LTS is just to old fashioned... one of the core benifits of FOSS is bested by Microsoft... sure the OS is old, buggy, sucks, but you will be able to install the latest and best applications for it16:27
holsteinEVERYTHING the software center does in 10.04 is stable16:27
nlsthznholstein: you mean the little software center does is stable :p16:27
holsteinnlsthzn: however you need to frame it, its stable none the less16:28
JackyAlcineI love SG1! It's my Plymouth loading theme :D16:28
Sidewinder1Personally, I prefer LTS...To each his/her own.16:28
nlsthznholstein: k... guess it is still a tad better than Debian... well, for now16:28
holsteinits just different*16:28
* nlsthzn suppresses the urge to dist-upgrade (twice)16:29
Sidewinder1BTW, greetings holstein16:30
nlsthznthanks for the assistance guys, appreciated!16:30
Sidewinder1BRB..16:30
holsteinSidewinder1: o/ :)16:30
holsteinnlsthzn: sure, anytime... i know these issues can become challening.16:31
nlsthznat least I got to go up to FF4 from the help :p16:31
virgois it possible to copy files with root rights without terminal?16:31
coalwaterstart nautilus with root16:31
coalwateropen a terminal then run sudo nautilus16:32
holsteinnlsthzn: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9988827 < theres a forum post with that same question16:32
virgoyeah, thanks16:32
nlsthzncoalwater: did you check out the thread?16:34
JackyAlcineHow do you get window buttons in the panel in 11.04 without Unity?16:51
holsteinJackyAlcine: there was a pacakge called maximus for the old netbook remix16:52
holsteinlooks like its still around http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=maximus&searchon=names&suite=natty&section=all16:54
JackyAlcineYup; just apt-cache search'd it.16:56
JackyAlcineHopefully; it'd also with the gnome-panel panel addition dialog to add those buttons to the panel.16:56
JackyAlcineUnity's cool and all, but I can't use.16:56
JackyAlcine*use it16:56
Sidewinder1coalwater, Just so you're aware, it's "gksudo" for launching graphical apps with root ptivleged16:59
Sidewinder1privileges16:59
Sidewinder1!gksudo16:59
ubot2If you need to run graphical applications as root, use « gksudo », as it will set up the environment more appropriately. Never just use "sudo"! (See http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/graphicalsudo to know why)16:59
coalwaterSidewinder1, i always use sudo and it works, i dunno what's the difference17:00
coalwatermaybe it's not kept bound by the terminal that launched it ?17:01
coalwaterhm ok, guess there's more to it, i've read the link17:03
Sidewinder1coalwater, Check out the ubot2 link. Do not ever run Firefox (not that you ever would) with sudo; it'll really foul up permissions and other things.17:04
coalwaterSidewinder1, yea i checked it17:05
Sidewinder1coalwater, Even gedit should be run with gksudo...17:05
* holstein ran sudo firefox once17:05
coalwaterthough i didn't understand most of it but yea i get the msg, no sudo gui17:05
holsteinthats all it took :)17:05
Sidewinder1:-)17:05
Sidewinder1Experience CAN be the best teacher; but, she's damn expensive! :-)17:06
Sidewinder1coalwater, coalwater's new mantra: no sudo gui, no sudo gui... :-)17:07
coalwaterlol17:07
Sidewinder1Now I know I'm getting too old; I'm actaully having fun.17:08
coalwaterfun is old?17:11
* Sidewinder1 Goes for luagh; no get.17:12
Sidewinder1laugh17:12
virgowhen i do ./bootstrap it says permission denied, but when i do sudo ./bootstrap it says "command not found"17:31
virgoi may be have to make the files executable17:32
coalwateris that a runnable file?17:34
virgoi dunno, the readme says i should do like that17:35
virgoSteps to build on Linux: ./bootstrap ./configure ./make && ./make install17:36
coalwaterok, try to skip the ./bootstrap, i never heard of it, and btw not all apps are installed like that17:37
virgomay be it doesn like that the folder belongs to root17:40
virgonope, still nothing17:42
Sidewinder1compiling from source in #ubuntu-beginners; Wow, we've come a long way. :-)17:48
virgoi think i dont need to compile this, thats why ubuntu dont let me17:51
virgothat happens, when ubuntu-beginner (me) wants to do things he cant17:55
Sidewinder1You can; there's just a learning curve involved. For instance, I know how to compile from source, but have never done so 'cause I haven't had the need. I love Synaptic...17:59
Sidewinder1It handles dependencies and a myriad of other important issues. I subscribe to the "kiss" principle: Keep It Simple Stupid....Which I sometimes am; according to my wife, more often than not...:-)18:01
virgolol18:01
virgoso this synaptic is better than software center?18:02
Sidewinder1But she's a winbloze person, go figure...What she doesn't know won't hurt her...18:02
Sidewinder1Absolutely! It's simply a gui, front-end for apt-get.18:03
coalwatervirgo,  u never said what u are trying to isntall18:03
Sidewinder1virgo, System-->Administration-->Synaptic Package Manager18:04
virgoi want to compile Ogre3d c project with Code::Blocks18:04
coalwaterdoes the folder contain a file called INSTALL or something18:04
Sidewinder1Totally beyond my abilities18:05
Sidewinder1virgo, Usually the source code that you download will have specific instructions in a "readme" file...18:06
virgoyeah, that what i was following18:06
virgoanyway, i will go some steps back and try read more instructions, tutorials, when i have time18:06
coalwaterare u sure u meet all the requirements18:07
virgoi hate to get stuck with unexpected errors when i follow the insturctions18:07
virgoim not sure at anything18:07
coalwateradd a write to file and post the output in the pastebin18:07
virgoi must investigate more, but i be afk now for some time18:07
coalwater./configure > output.txt18:07
coalwaterthen open output.txt and paste the content in http://paste.ubuntu.com/18:08
coalwaterand give us the link18:08
stlsaintcat output.txt | pastebinit -b http://paste.ubuntu.com :D18:08
stlsaintthat could be a one liner really18:09
virgothe output is too simple for saving to file: No such file or directory18:09
coalwaterno errors?18:09
braiamor pastebinit -i output.txt :D18:09

leexso for everyone else: I am currently trying to install from a USB stick, using the alternate amd64 installer as well as the amd64 daily alternate installer, I manually decrypt my disks to reuse them for installation (don't want to move my home, or change my LVM), it works well until I reach select and install software, where it fails19:51
holsteinleex: are you able to get to the select software step? if so, try not installing whatever is failing, and apt-get it later19:51
leexholstein: but I am not using ubuntustudio19:51
leexholstein: how can I see with package failed?19:51
holsteinleex: right, HOWEVER, they are both alternate installers, so im trying to pool and share my experience19:51
leexand how can I resume installing all the other packages?19:51
holsteinleex: theres a step in the alternate installer, near the end of the list19:52
holsteinmakes a webserver (if you are online) on the failed install, and allows you to get at some logs19:53
leexholstein: k I will try that19:53
holsteinleex: with ubuntustudio, when i chose *not* to install any pacakges, the installation went through as usual19:53
holsteinand i just installed the metas afterwards19:53
holsteinleex: i would suggest trying the 10.04 alternate, that could be a bug in the alternate installer with whatever configuration you are trying to setup19:54
leexholstein: I need at least 38-r3 because of my hardware, my nic won't work with an older kernel version19:55
holsteinleex: get that failing log report then, and we'll see who we can find to look at it :)19:55
holsteinunless you want to run a different kernel in lucid19:56
leexk, I will get some food and post the result in asap, about in an hour ;)19:58

virgobecause im not sure it is the correct way20:18
virgoi was messing with the pastebinit also :p20:18
virgocool thing20:19
leexinstalling the base system right now20:20
virgoi just add "| pastebinit -a virgo" after terminal command and get it posted to internet20:21
coalwateryup20:21
virgocoalwater: you got alot of free time that you just stay in irc and help others?20:23
coalwatervirgo,  not at all, i only have time to work and study for an hour or so at home and sleep, but i keep the irc client on whenever im around, whenever someone mentions my name i just check what's around, i do check what people are talking about every now and then though20:25
coalwateri wish i had free time, at least i would have more time to study what i want to learn20:26
virgoi must never type your name then, else ill interrupt your studing20:27
kristian_hi again, ppl20:27
virgohi20:27
coalwaterhi kristian_20:28
kristian_hi coalwater , virgo20:28
kristian_still contemplating the cloud backup/ssh thing20:28
kristian_what would be nice was an account that I could mount via sshfs20:29
coalwaterso virgo  its really useful to just yell people's name when ur talking, dont think any one just keeps his irc client on and keeps reading lol20:29
kristian_anyone know of a free webspace provider where I can use sshfs?20:37
coalwaterkristian_, isn't that a lil too much to be free lol20:50
leexwell this time, using the expert mode and not choosing to install any software at all, i managed through select and install software, but restarting the sytem results in grub error 15, so how does ubuntu handle its grub? coming from gentoo there is too much autoconfig stuff for me :)20:50
kristian_coalwater, I just asked about this on #ubuntuone as I can't find it on their website20:51
escottleex, depends on what version of grub for grub2 there is an os-prober tool which finds other os partitions and a grub-mkconfig which builds the grub.cfg file using inputs from /etc/default/grub20:53
moose_man_1957holstein: you still there20:53
holsteinmoose_man_1957: o/20:54
moose_man_1957same basic error trying to instal 10.0420:56
Error404NotFoundoi20:57
moose_man_1957keeps asking for a different labeled disk20:57
holsteinmoose_man_1957: labeled?20:58
holsteinnot sure what you mean... whats the error?20:58
moose_man_1957the window is [!!] Install the base system20:59
holsteinmoose_man_1957: this is an alternate iso?20:59
holsteinOH20:59
holsteinserver21:00
holsteinim remembering now :)21:00
holsteinhad to look back at the scroll*21:00
moose_man_1957yes server ;-)21:00
holsteinwell, i can assure you thats the iso i used21:00
holsteinmoose_man_1957: can you get a normal live CD to do anything?21:00
holsteinmoose_man_1957: and, you did confirm the md5 sum?21:01
moose_man_1957Please insert disk Labeled: 'Unbuntu-Server 10.04.2 LTS _Lucid Lynx21:01
moose_man_1957holstein: how to confirm md5 sum21:01
leexescott: so if I get grub error 15, I just have to cryptsetup and chroot and then us the os-prober, grub-mkconfig and grub-install?21:02
holsteinmoose_man_1957: you can run in a terminal md5sum /path/to/image21:03
leex*use21:03
holsteinand look online for the sum from canonnical21:03
escottleex, confirm your grub version first. is it 1 or 221:03
leex221:03
moose_man_1957holstein: remember if I were any greener I would still be in the ground21:04
holsteinmoose_man_1957: what would you like clarification about?21:04
moose_man_1957holstein: I put the cd into this liux machine what now21:04
leexescott: 221:05
moose_man_1957holstein:  terminal command21:05
holsteinmoose_man_1957: im suggesting that you confirm the md5 sum of the downloaded iso image21:05
holsteinin a terminal: md5sum /home/you/Downloads/ubuntu.iso21:05
holstein*for example21:05
holsteinthen, you compare the # you get with the # that is on the site where you downloaded21:06
escottleex, i don't know the crypt related stuff, but otherwise yes. chroot, grub-mkconfig, and if you think the mbr is hosed grub-install /dev/sda21:06
escottleex, you don't run os-prober, grub-mkconfig does21:06
escott!grub | leex21:06
ubot2leex: GRUB2 is the default Ubuntu boot manager since 9.10 (Karmic). Lost GRUB after installing Windows? === kingkong is now known as kingkong|brb
moose_man_1957holstein: the cd is in my cd drive how do I reference it21:14
moose_man_1957holstein: I thought /media / Ubuntu-Server....21:15
moose_man_1957holstein: Thank you for your patience21:16
holsteinmoose_man_1957: i would suggest going for the downloaded imgage21:25
holsteinimage*21:25
holsteinmoose_man_1957: also, you might want to just install the normal ubuntu verion, assuming you have enough resources21:25
holsteinyou can use that installation as a server installation*21:25
moose_man_1957holstein:21:28
moose_man_1957holstein: so you are saying if I install 11.04 desktop on the machine I can use it as a server, this is just for a home network as I want my photos and music on a server21:29
holsteinmoose_man_1957: sure, and that might be easier for you to handle21:30
holsteinhaving a GUI and all that can be quite helpful when you first land in linux21:30
moose_man_1957holstein: agreed21:30
holsteintheres also solutions like http://www.turnkeylinux.org/fileserver21:30
holstein^ thats based on ubuntu 10.0421:30
moose_man_1957holstein: I have been on windows for ever, but I am technical and was a programmer21:31
moose_man_1957holstein: you are most kind sir21:31
holsteinmoose_man_1957: OK, so you'll be fine then either way :)21:31
moose_man_1957holstein: I will read the turnkey solution you have provided21:32
holsteinmoose_man_1957: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=175694821:32
holsteinnot really a solution, just someone with that same issue21:33
holsteinmoose_man_1957: do you have raid?21:33
holsteini keep thinking you have some kind of hardward configuration that im not familiar with, and that is not totally 'out-of-the-box' easy21:34
moose_man_1957holstein: no I have a simple older computer with a couple of 80gig drives nothing exceptional about the hardware21:35
moose_man_1957the forum you pointed me to is the exact problem21:36
moose_man_1957maybe I will download to this box and burn it here21:36

coalwateridk if this helps ,but i think the bot had some help about sound22:34
coalwater!sound22:34
ubot2If you're having problems with sound, click the Volume applet, then Sound Preferences, and check your Volume, Hardware, Input, and Output settings.  If that fails, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Sound - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting - http://alsa.opensrc.org/DmixPlugin - For playing audio files,  see !players and !mp3.22:34
coalwaterthere u go, hope this helps somehow22:34
philipballewalright. thanks!!!22:35
escottphilipballew, you can also try hda_analyzer for onboard intel sound problems, its a bit less beginner friendly but it usually works22:39
coalwatermy gnome-panel appears with no styles at all, it gives me that ugly classic theme, how can i reset this, it seems to be some bad settings or something23:04
escottcoalwater, does it work properly when you logout/login?23:05
Error404NotFoundgo to system settings23:06
Error404NotFoundlogin23:06
coalwaterit like starts good, but then crashes and goes bad23:06
coalwaternot crashes, it just acts like that u know23:06
coalwateri think it loads something that does that23:06
escottcoalwater, ps aux | grep settings is gnome-settings-daemon running23:07
coalwatercould u say what exactly  i shoudl write, cause it says it doesn't exist or something23:10
coalwaterbut the daemon is running when i tried it alone23:10
coalwaterok if i want to delete all its settings file, where could i find that23:14
escottcoalwater, "ps aux | grep settings" is gnome-settings-daemon listed?23:18
coalwateryea, it is23:18
coalwateri killed it, then restarted it, and it worked, but i dont know if this will work every time or not23:21
escottcoalwater, i had some issues with race conditions before, where some things like nautilus were loading before gnome-settings-daemon could read the theme out of dconf23:22
coalwaterit's not bothering me much, it's a virtual box machine that i only use for coding and branching, but it would be nice if i could fix it23:23
coalwaterrestarting and ill see what happens23:24
coalwaterstill bad lol, o well23:26
