alfi_hai guys12:07
alfi_i am currently in the process of installing ubuntu studio on my studio workhorse right now, but it tells me it needs a network connection12:08
alfi_problem is, i have nowhere to connect the cable, and there's no wireless on it.12:09
alfi_is there anyway around having do drag the machine to stories down to hook up to the router and sit in the hallway while installing?12:10
alfi_*two stories12:10
alfi_any help would be apreciated12:11
alfi_:)12:11
alfi_The image I am using is ubuntustudio-10.10-alternate-i386 in case that matters.12:15
alfi_And I am installing from USB12:24
holsteinalfi_: o/15:59
holsteinalfi_: other than adding hardware (a wifi adapter) you'll need to plug it in assuming you want a network connection while installing16:00
holstein*you should not *need* to have network to install/use ubuntustudio16:01
holsteintry #opensourcemusicians if you have more questions16:06
* holstein will be out for a bit...16:06
supercoco74Hello! how is 11.04? (before I install it)16:51
ttti have dual xeon quad processors (E5520) and am new to studio looking for advice.  Do I need to worry about -generic vs -rt vs -realtime?  I would like to do 'bedroom recording' and am thinking the the m-audio fast track may work for me, but then, as far as I know, I will have to patch a new kernel.  Is this all necessary?  Is there an easier way to go?20:35
tttI'm currently on Lucid 10.04 and have installed studio from the repositories.  Also, I have Nvidia.20:36
jerry_lhello room i have a question about 10.0422:41
jerry_lthe question is in regaurds to "realtime kernel will be available in Ubuntu Studio PPA"?22:42
holsteinjerry_l: hey23:12
holsteini would suggest trying the -generic kernel23:13
holsteinhttp://wiki.debian.org/DebianMultimedia#Realtime_kernel23:13
holstein^ this will give you an idea of what it going on in the big picture23:14
jerry_lthankx.23:14
holsteinim hoping by 12.04, we all will be able to use the -generic kernel23:14
holsteineven with firewire devices23:14
holsteinthat being said, i use https://launchpad.net/~abogani/+archive/ppa23:14
holsteinwith 10.0423:14
holsteinjerry_l: theres a -lowlatency kernel that will hopefully be included ASAP23:15
holsteinheres a relevant bugreport23:16
holsteinhttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntustudio/+bug/69589323:16
ubottuUbuntu bug 695893 in Ubuntu Studio "JACK wont start with presonus firepod and generic kernel" [Undecided,Confirmed]23:16
holsteinttt: ^^23:17
holsteinsee that, also, i use another PPA23:17
jerry_li am prep ing a computer for my cousin. ubuntustudio 10.04, dell 2.8ghz 1gbram 500gbHD bulit in sound - small form factor.23:17
holsteinPPA's actually ttt23:17
holsteinhttp://kxstudio.sourceforge.net/mediawiki/index.php/KXStudio:Repositories23:17
holsteini use abogani's -realtime kernel that has been patched for nvidia from that PPA^23:18
holsteinhowever, you probably dont need it, depending on what you are doing23:18
holsteinand, like the debian multimedia team suggests, the patches are working into the -generic one anyways23:18
jerry_lholstein are you a linux programer?23:19
holsteinjerry_l: yeah, if its a built in card, you can really only get so far23:19
holsteinjerry_l: nah, just a contributing member23:19
holsteinuser*23:19
holsteinjerry_l & ttt : feel free to check in over at #opensourcemusicians if you get here, and its quiet23:20
jerry_lhave to eat.... BRB.23:21
jerry_lhi im back23:45
