kirandeohi all... i am using ubuntu 8.10 i want to install new version 11.04... but i dont want to loose my data on my ubuntu dedicated drive... i dont have any backup media... is it possible to overwrite previous version without data loss?21:26
MrChrisDruifkirandeo; Have you got a separate /home partition?21:29
MrChrisDruifAnd why go from 8.10, which is a LTS (or Long Time Service) version to a regular version?21:29
kirandeoyes i have installed ubuntu on separate unallocated drive...at that time21:30
MrChrisDruifIf I remember correct and I often remember correct :P21:30
MrChrisDruifYou mean Ubuntu is just one drive/partition? Not a separate /home partition?21:31
kirandeow8 lemme explain21:31
kirandeoi had installed windows on 120 gb HD and left 40 GB for ubuntu.... unallocated...21:32
kirandeoand than installed ubuntu on 40 gb21:33
kirandeoi guess i had reserved 8 GB for ubuntu installation... and remaining for data...21:35
kirandeoMrChrisDruif : m i clear?21:35
MrChrisDruifAlright, so your data is on a separate partition?21:36
kirandeoyes21:36
MrChrisDruifWell, then your safe to install it over the Ubuntu partition :)21:38
MrChrisDruifBut it could never hurt to back it up ;)21:38
kirandeohmm21:38
kirandeojust let me confirm its like this21:41
kirandeo... dev/sda7.....ext3.....     /21:41
kirandeoand dev/sda9 ...... ext3..... /home21:41
MrChrisDruifIn case of hardware failure I mean21:41
MrChrisDruifYour /home is a separate partition, so it's good to go....21:42
kirandeohmm.... thanks.... a lot.... :)21:42
kirandeothanks to ubuntu too... i love it21:43
