diploMorning all08:19
DJonesHi diplo08:30
diploQuiet in here this morning08:35
DJonesYes, I was thinking that, one comment between 10pm and 8am, pretty much unheard of08:36
dogmatic69is it correct to call ubuntu Unix?08:43
bigcalmNo08:44
bigcalmUbuntu is a distrabution of Linux which strives to be POSIX compatable08:45
dogmatic69thats what i thought08:46
dogmatic69"But if you consider Portable Operating System Interface (POSIX) standards then Linux can be considered as UNIX."08:47
DJonesdogmatic69: http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/what-is-the-difference-between-linux-and-unix/08:49
dogmatic69DJones: that is where the quote is from08:50
DJonesHeh08:50

MartijnVdSBigRedS: "I'll be back"10:36
czajkowskialoha10:44
NgBigRedS: ooi in what way is it becoming confused?10:53
BigRedSNg: it seems that, after a few goes of adding and removing panes, it 'forgets' where they are10:59
BigRedSso alt+left might actually go up10:59
BigRedSer, no, not that bad actuall10:59
Ngahh the navigation10:59
BigRedSalt+up will for a while go to top-left, then at some point start going to top-right10:59
BigRedSyeah10:59
NgI should never have let that in at all, it's too hard to do10:59
BigRedSI'm always quite amazed that it works at all, so I'm quite accepting of it stopping10:59
BigRedSno, leave it in!11:00
BigRedSeven buggy, it's invaluable!11:00
BigRedSI just need to restart it every few weeks, it's no great hardship11:01

davmor2czajkowski: only a poor workwoman blames her tools :P11:13
DJonesWouldn't a poor workwoman have sold her tools to buy food, so couldn't blame the said tools11:14
BigRedSif she'd sold her tools, she wouldn't be poor any more11:14
davmor2or a workwoman11:15
DJonesIf she didn't have tools, she wouldn't be a workwoman either,11:15
BigRedSshe could use someone else's tools11:16
* bigcalm melts11:16
czajkowskior can I just blame the mac layout of keys11:17
czajkowskieh11:17
czajkowski:)11:17
bigcalmThat's fine. Mac keyboards look nice, work terribly11:18
czajkowskihas anyone had/seen a bug on natty with alt tabbing not working11:50
czajkowskiwhen they upgraded11:50
BigRedSI've had the alt-tabbed-to thing raised but not given focus11:52
BigRedSbut thats as broken as I've seen11:52
czajkowskijust wondering on a bug number11:54
czajkowskihad a mate whinge about it11:54
czajkowskithen moved to debian over it11:54
BigRedSoh, I've not seen a bug for it11:54
=== imexil1 is now known as imexil
gordczajkowski, sounds like they had a custom compiz setup when upgrading and for some reason the alt tab plugin wasn't selecting in their plugins, not heard of a bug number but honestly its one of those hard to fix ones, if people want to customise compiz they should be able to, even if that means breaking their system ;)12:15

BigRedSctrl-q closing a window, is that decided by the WM or the app itself?14:30
BigRedSI'd assumed WM, but the absence of consistency suggests otherwise..14:30
BigRedSI assumed it was a key combination that just sent the same signal as clicking the 'x'14:31
ormiretBigRedS: generally the app, but if you  want to you  could mkae the WM catch it and close the app.14:31
ormiretI think alt-F4 is normally bound to that.14:31
Neoti01does anyonje in here use askozia ?14:34
Neoti01PBX for telephoney etc.14:34
popey2614:34
popeyBAH!14:34
BigRedSormiret: Ah, so alt-f4 is generally what the wm will use, and the app can choose to implement ctrl-q itself14:37
bigcalmctrl-w in nano does a search14:41
bigcalmctrl-w in firefox closes the tab14:41
bigcalmIrritating14:41
BigRedSthat's one of the reasons you shouldn't be using nano14:42
bigcalm:(14:42

BigRedShaha16:01
gordshauno, light *and* thin? ;)16:14
gordmy first one i half wondered if it was just empty inside16:14
popeyheh16:17
popeyI just ordered two for my desktop16:17
popeyone for windows, one for ubuntu16:17
shaunonot so much on thin .. it just feels like they left something important out of a 2.5" disk16:17
BigRedSwasn't there some scam where they were just empty boxes with an SD card with a dishonest partition table taped to the inside?16:17
bigcalmYep16:17
popeyheh, yeah16:17
gordpopey, how big did you get the one for windows?16:18
popey120G16:18
popeyhope thats enough16:18
popeyalso _bought_ a copy of windows 716:18
popeyi feel sick now16:18
shaunosame size I just got.  should be enough for /16:18
gordthats my worry with windows too, i only use windows for steam, would struggle to fit my games on less than 25016:19
popeywell, I _might_ leave a spinny disk in there just in case16:19
popeyor I could put one on the esata bus16:19
gordubuntu one just destroys any hope of free space on my ssd too :( every time i get a bit of space it greedily gobbles it up16:20
shaunoI'm keeping my hdd for bulky stuff.  music, movies, games, etc16:20
gordor rather, people updating shares gobble it up16:20
popeyshauno: do you have it spin down?16:21
* popey pokes marxjohnson with uupc16:22
shaunoit should do.  I'll find out when I get home and get to play with this thing :)16:22
popeyahh16:22
popeyshould I encrypt my /home with ecryptfs on ssd?16:22
shaunofor now I'm just unpacking stuff so it'll actually fit in my bag.  they shipped a 2.5" disk in a box that wouldn't fit in my backpack16:23
jpdsAny encryption on a SSD just sounds like overhead.16:23
popeyyeah16:23
gordi never bother encrypting my desktop, if someone has gotten access to my desktop drives, i have bigger problems16:27
shaunoI have an encrypted disk image I use for stuff that actually matters16:28
shaunofinancials, scans of passports, etc.  given than it's a laptop, being paranoid seems sensible16:28
shaunobut whole-disk or home still seems like overkill16:29
shaunothinking about it, I might see if I can set prey up to nuke it sometime16:30
gordencrypting your home makes sense when you go around conferences with lots of other people from different companies ;)16:31

lubotu3Usually, there is no single "best" application to perform a given task. It's up to you to choose, depending on your preferences, features you require, and other factors. Do NOT take polls in the channel. If you insist on getting people's opinions, ask BestBot in #ubuntu-bots.22:05
