robb4nHi, is there any way to disable the cursor jumping arrow thing in KDE when i open an program?00:02
James147robb4n: the bouncing animation?00:04
robb4nJames147: Yes, thanks for the correct word =)00:04
James147robb4n: I rembmer there was a way... though i cannot remember off hand exactly where :)00:05
robb4nok, now when i know the word: bouncing i will try google it =) thanks anyway James14700:05
James147robb4n: System settings > Application and system notifications > launcher feedback00:06
lcb"Launch Feedback"00:06
lcblook for it on settings00:06
robb4nThanks00:06
robb4ndone, ah nice to not have that jumping stuff =) nice to have it gone00:07
lcbrobb4n: btw, look also under Cursor Theme" and Mouse | Mouse Navigation00:08
ncfi1013hey00:08
lcbi mean, Mouse.... then check settings on it00:08
lcbhey00:09
ncfi1013i need some help00:09
Linkmasterwith?00:09
lcbthat's a good start00:09
LinkmasterUsually00:09
ncfi1013i am upgrading my distro00:09
LinkmasterWhat happened with it?00:09
LinkmasterOr do you simply want to?00:09
lcbwait.. still upgrading00:10
lcb:)00:10
ncfi1013and im being asked if i want to keep or replace the kdrmc config file00:10
ncfi1013so...keep...or replace...?00:10
ncfi1013thats all...00:10
ncfi1013and i know im late...but whatever00:11
James147ncfi1013: that  file stores the settings for the login screen, if you ahve changed them ata ll choose keep00:11
James147ncfi1013: if you want them to be reset choose replace... either way it dosnt really matter00:11
Linkmasterncfi1013: keeping is generally good, unless you want to redo it all. It won't matter too much in the end00:11
James147ncfi1013: I doupt you will notice a difference if you ahvent heavly customised the login screen :)00:12
ncfi1013so...if i didnt change my password/username...dont replace it...right?00:12
James147ncfi1013: the login manager dosnt handel username/password storing... thats handel by lower level tools in a far more secure way :)00:13
James147ncfi1013: just so you know, login details are stored in /etc/passwd and the password hashes for each account are stroed in /etc/shadow00:14
James147though you shount edit though files by hand :)00:14
ncfi1013thanks...00:14
ncfi1013bye...00:15
LinkmasterJames147: he was an odd fellow..00:18
lcbbif i have on my printers.conf 'DeviceURI socket://192.168.1.200' and the printer needs login:pass - if i change to 'socket://Mylogin:MyPassword@192.168.1.200' it will work or... maybe i'll turn the printer on a x-ray machine? :o00:18
lcbcan't test it now, i'm not where i have that printer00:19
lcbbut i wonder if works..00:19
LinkmasterHuh..thats an interesting concept, I wouldn't know though00:20
lcbeither way i would be happy; printer or x-ray00:20
lcbto run as a x-ray and do a torax one, just need to turn it up00:21
lcban expensive machine with no linux drivers, afaik - http://www.olivettibenelux.com/products/multifunctional-copier-color/37-d-color-mf201.html00:22
JKAbramshello, I got a problem after upgrading kubuntu from 10.10 to 11.04, the menus have disappeared in all applications01:10
JKAbramsyou know the File, Edit, Tools etc.01:10
JKAbramswhen using x-applications as root I get the menus back (for example krusader in root mode works)01:11
JKAbramstried changeing permissions on /home/<user>/* to <user> but no go01:11
JKAbramsany idea what to try next?01:12
Linkmasterwhat applications are not showing?01:13
JKAbramsall ive tried01:13
JKAbramskwrite, quassel firefox dolphin etc01:14
LinkmasterHm, let me tinker around with it01:15
LinkmasterJKAbrams: are you using FF4?01:16
JKAbramsyes01:16
LinkmasterThat could be one reason. Click the little 'firefox' thing in the upper left corner, and click on 'preferences' and then select 'menu bar'. that will [hopefully] solve your firefox one01:17
JKAbramsok I'll try that :)01:17
LinkmasterI'll continue hunting as to why your other menu icons aren't showing01:18
JKAbramsI have no option "preferences" on the dropdown under the firefox icon01:19
LinkmasterHm, thats awkward...01:19
JKAbramsi have configure window behaivour, is that the one?01:19
Linkmasterperhaps you didn't set it up that way, hm. Let me think01:20
JKAbramsthis dropdown menu I get on the icon is the same as I get when right-clicking on the titlebar01:21
JKAbramsa generic window-manager menu01:22
LinkmasterOh, not that menu01:22
Linkmasterlets try renaming your .config file real fast to see if that brings them up01:22
JKAbramssure, which one?01:23
Linkmastergo to dolphin, press "alt+." and then find the '.config' folder, and rename it to '.config-old'01:23
LinkmasterJKAbrams: you find it?01:24
JKAbramsnope01:24
JKAbramsmaby i've disabled that shortcut, or something eles is up whith it, cus nothing happens01:24
Linkmasterokay, is Dolphin still up?01:25
JKAbramsyep01:25
JKAbramsin what folder is this config-file?01:25
Linkmaster~01:25
Linkmasterits a folder, in your home directory01:26
LinkmasterI didn't mention that, since Dolphin starts straight to the home directory01:26
LinkmasterJKAbrams: make sure your in your home directory[where Music, Documents, etc. is] and then press and hold 'alt' and then press the period button. see if that works01:27
JKAbramsthat one worked, thx01:28
JKAbramsnow i know how to show hidden files01:28
JKAbramswhitout the menu :)01:28
Linkmasterokay, now find the .config folder, and rename it to '.config-old'01:28
Linkmasteryour welcome haha01:29
JKAbramsdone01:29
JKAbramsdone01:29
JKAbramsok01:29
Linkmasterokay, now, log out and then back in. Lets see if that works01:29
JKAbramsdone01:29
LinkmasterYou logged out?01:30
JKAbramsnow there is something stange with quassel...01:30
Linkmasterwhat?01:30
JKAbramsnod if you get what i'm saying, cus i get nothing in the chat-window =P01:31
JKAbramshehe, i try restarting this app see if that helps, back in a minute01:31
Linkmasteryou there now?01:33
JKAbrams_yes, i renamed the config folder01:34
Linkmasterokay, now, log out and back in to your session01:34
JKAbrams_aight, you know changing the config -folder made quassel stop working, so i copied over the old quassel config-folder so i could  get back in here again01:35
JKAbrams_i'll try logging in again, back in another minute01:36
JKAbramsi'm sad to report that did not help01:38
JKAbramsstill no menus01:38
JKAbramsi did a logout/login could there make a difference to restart the computer instead?01:39
LinkmasterJKAbrams: possibly could, though did you keep the folder named as '.config-old'?01:40
JKAbramsof course, i've invested too much time in those settings and profiles ;)01:40
LinkmasterHmm...maybe if we can get a default desktop on your computer, we can see if its still borked that way01:41
JKAbramsyeah, my hunch is that it is a problem with some config file or other, but i dont know them enough to know where to start looking01:43
LinkmasterJKAbrams: this is what we'll do. We'll power off your computer, and when you bring it back online, before you log in, we'll default your desktop01:43
Linkmasterwhen you get to KDM, press "alt+ctrl+F1" and then login that way. Once you do, type "mv /home/"your_user_name"/.kde /home/"your_user_name"/.kde-old" once you do that, go back to KDM with "alt+ctrl+F7" and then login. It should default everything you have01:45
Linkmasterand write that stuff down so that you don't forget it, and remember, capitilization matters01:45
JKAbramsok, i'll try moving my .kde folder01:46
Linkmasteryou have to restart first though01:47
Linkmasterthis shouldn't be done through Dolphin or anything01:47
JKAbramsyep, i'll use your suggested method :)01:47
JKAbramsmight take me about 5 minutes i think, i'll report back when its done01:48
=== Keshl_ is now known as Keshl
Linkmasteralright, good01:48
LinkmasterJKAbrams: yes, no?01:55
JKAbramsi'm back, and my menus too :D01:55
JKAbramsbut not my application profiles01:56
JKAbramsare they stored in .config?01:56
Linkmasteralright, good. Well, like I said. we were defaulting your entire session01:56
LinkmasterNo those aren't. I believe your good to rename .config-old back to .config01:56
JKAbramsquassels profile was in .config01:57
Linkmasterhmm...im not sure01:57
LinkmasterI was just doing basic troubleshooting :P01:57
JKAbramsyep, i learned a few things along the way, any suggested path for merging my new .kde and the old one?02:00
LinkmasterJKAbrams: you can either redo all your custom stuff, or we can spend the time to merge one thing at a time to figure out what went wrong where02:01
lcbwow02:02
lcbJKAbrams: you know Linkmaster gets paid by the word??02:03
Linkmasterlcb: hush02:03
lcbhehehe02:03
JKAbrams:)02:03
JKAbramsthats quite an offer02:03
lcbgood job02:04
lcb<JKAbrams> i'm back, and my menus too :D02:04
JKAbramsthe application settings (like size, color and shortcuts) I can do again, but I need to figure out a way to get my user profiles back (saved passwords, user account settings and the like)02:04
Linkmasteryour making me seem like I know what I'm talking about...:P02:04
lcblol02:04
LinkmasterJKAbrams: most of that should still be there...let me take a look though02:05
lcbyou know. don't be so modest02:05
JKAbramsi'll start by renaming the .config-old -folder back and than a resterat, to see if the menus are still with me02:06
JKAbramsback in a couple02:07
Linkmasteralright02:07
JKAbramsmenus still here, the problem was is in some config-file in .kde02:12
LinkmasterHm, thats both easier and more difficult02:14
JKAbramsstill alot of my profiles are missing (kopete for example), i could do a comparasion between the files in .kde and .kde-old to see what have changed02:15
Linkmasternone of your passwords are around anymoer?02:15
JKAbramslet me see...02:15
JKAbramsremembered ssh-passwored are missing02:15
JKAbrams(sftp-connection from dolphin)02:16
LinkmasterJKAbrams: go to your '.kde-old' folder through a konsole, and ls -al for us, then pastbin it02:16
JKAbramsok02:17
JKAbramshttp://paste.kde.org/78061/02:19
JKAbramsor did you want the full -R listing?02:21
braiamhow i can see a map of my current layout?02:22
LinkmasterJKAbrams: I'm not sure..I really don't think passwords are saved in .kde...maybe...hm. Try moving the three files that have symbolic links back into .kde. see what that does02:24
JKAbramsok02:25
LinkmasterJKAbrams: you might need to log out for it to take full effect02:27
JKAbramsthey point to the same folders02:27
Linkmasteroh. Hrm..02:27
JKAbramsi mean all the links in .kde and .kde-old are the same02:27
Linkmasteryeah, they are the same folders, but .kde has a new slate if that makes sense. all the subfolders in .kde-old won't be in .kde02:30
JKAbramsperhaps i02:30
JKAbrams*oops02:30
JKAbramsi know what you mean, i just meant the symbolic links are the same02:31
Linkmasteryeah, I figured as much02:32
JKAbramsi just did a content comparasion in krusader thera are about 3800 files differing between .kde and .kde-old02:32
LinkmasterI told you :P02:32
JKAbramsyep, i might just start copying them over, from .kde-old to .kde new, and se when the problem with the meny reappears...02:34
LinkmasterThat was the second, longer plan that would hopefully not happen. but if you wish to try it, please do so. you might need to login/logout for every file copied, so I'd suggest larger folers. when it screws up, move them back out, and then start to narrow down to the specific file, and we'll work from there02:35
JKAbramsyeah02:36
JKAbramsany idea on some specific file to look for before i do that?02:37
JKAbramsi figure some of them are more likely than others to be related to menus (like kwin or xorg stuff), but i'm not too familiar with the file structure of .kde as to know where certain files are02:37
LINKSWORD2Greetings, all.02:42
Linkmasterhey LINKSWORD202:43
LinkmasterJKAbrams: not exactly sure, I've been questing through .kde to see if there is anything there, but I cna't find anything promising02:43
LINKSWORD2Hey there, Linkmaster... Normally I hang out here for the heck of it, and help when I can...02:44
LINKSWORD2But now I need help. :/02:44
LinkmasterWhats up?02:44
braiamwhat package I have to install to get the showdesktop widget¿02:45
Linkmasterbraiam: that should be located inside the widget for 'add widgets' already02:46
JKAbramsLinkmaster: i appreciate the effort, ive started merging the folders now, found the kopete profile, so now at least that back02:46
Linkmasterlog out then back in periodically so that we can attempt to find out where the borked file is02:47
braiamLinkmaster: nop, it show a red x icon instead of the widget02:47
LINKSWORD2Kopete is a lot of fun, mate! I bet I can help you. :D02:47
LinkmasterOh, hrm...02:47
LinkmasterLINKSWORD2: his session was borked, so I had him default everything, and now he's attempting to find which file is broken02:48
LINKSWORD2Oh, ouch...02:48
Linkmasterbraiam: I'm not sure, let me look02:49
braiamdpkg -S would help Linkmaster02:49
JKAbramsLINKSWORD2: all my menus in all applications were gone, but now i have them back, trying to backtrack02:49
Linkmasterhave you tried that?02:49
braiamI haven't installed the package02:50
* Linkmaster thought it came default02:50
LinkmasterYou using a package manager? try looking up 'desktop-widget'02:50
braiamso, there is no dpkg info02:51
lcbbraiam: uou don't have "Show Desktop" widget??02:52
lcbyou too02:53
braiamI have installed gnome first02:53
lcbi had that same issue and i don't remember how i solved it :(02:53
braiamafter that i installed kde-base02:53
Linkmasteroh, you have gnome first?? thats a different story, I'm not confident of what the reason would be02:54
lcbbraiam: it shows the red X on top after trying to minimizing all windows and changing desktop isn't?02:54
lcbcheck if you have more 'minimizing windows' running on the panels..02:55
braiamIt says "Cannot find the component"02:56
braiam:showdesktop02:57
LINKSWORD2braiam: Which version of Kubuntu are you on?02:58
braiam11.0402:58
LINKSWORD2You should be able to re-acquire the Show Desktop panel then, by right-clicking your desktop and clicking Add Panel.02:59
LINKSWORD2Then click Default Panel.03:00
LINKSWORD2Then you can dispose of your current taskbar/panel once you're done.03:00
lcbbraiam: you can use your pager (the widget which shows your virtual desktops) to show your desktop? Right click on pager -> Pager Settings -> Selecting current desktop: Shows desktop.03:01
=== 36DABP5TT is now known as JKAbrams
braiamLINKSWORD2: the add the defaul panel, don't show the show desktop widget03:03
LINKSWORD2That's bizarre. Let me look around more, then.03:03
braiamyou want a screen shot?03:04
lcbhmmm CTRL + F12 gives what you have.. the red X03:04
lcbprobably some bug bugging03:04
LINKSWORD2Did you try adding a new widget and searching for "Show" or "Desktop" in the search box?03:04
braiamim pretty sure that i don't have installed the plasma plugin03:04
braiamLINKSWORD2: i dont have the plugin listed anywhere03:05
braiamthe same for quickaccess03:05
lcbLINKSWORD2: does CTRL + F12 works for you?03:05
LINKSWORD2Hold on.03:05
lcbor you also get the red X..03:06
LINKSWORD2Looks like I also get the red X.03:06
lcbmaybe we got the e-coli bacteria... :o03:06
braiamlcb: no..03:07
lcbLINKSWORD2: that is suppose to minimize all wins03:07
lcbwell, however my "Show Desktop" works fine03:07
LINKSWORD2Ctrl-F12 brings up the Widget Dashboard header for me.03:07
braiamlcb: lock the file that it use, and use dpkg -S, it give the name of the package and we can discard that03:08
LINKSWORD2I'm using a Windows keyboard, and have tied the Show Desktop shortcut to Windows Key + D.03:08
braiamLINKSWORD2: no, it only print the D key03:09
lcbLINKSWORD2: that's a good one. less ressources i believe03:09
LINKSWORD2Kubuntu and other Linux distros I have used identify the "Windows" key as a Meta input.03:10
LINKSWORD2Fine by me, it's just another name for the same 'ol thing.03:10
braiamyeah, but my layout are configured to a mac one03:10
LINKSWORD2Mac keyboard?03:11
Linkmastergotta go, see ya guys round03:11

LinkmasterIf I were outside the US, I'd be pulling a 'thepiratebay' right now06:47
LinkmasterSocial fingers up, torrents out xD06:47
SIR_TacoLinkmaster: not sure about that.... but there are quite a few countries, mine included, that aren't as harsh on reverse-engineering06:48
LinkmasterYeahh, mine is a killer06:48
LinkmasterOf course, I have no money, I'm not even legal enough to travel, and I have other plans with my future. I'm just wanting to see if I can do it during my time at home :P06:50
SIR_TacoTimes have changed..... there was a time when I hacked websites and did stupid things (but then they had few ways to catch you, and fewer laws to prosectue you).... now, I wouldn't think about it. But reverse engineering something is still a legal option up here06:53
unknownhmm06:53
SIR_Tacounknown: how's the 'hmm' treating you?06:56
LinkmasterSIR_Taco: though, by reading many different posts and the such, I can say with 100% accuracy that the ZuneHD waits for the key to come from the software. I can see and access the files on my Zune from Linux with the libmtp, but since it needs that specific key to allow write-access....to find that key would be gold in the linux world06:57
unknownJust tesing kubuntu out06:57
unknowntesting*06:57
SIR_TacoLinkmaster: yes it would, but you need to understand that it's not an easy key ;)06:58
LinkmasterI'm well aware of how M$ runs things..huh...I wonder if...06:58
LinkmasterSIR_Taco: theres programs to capture all transmissions done on a USB port, correct? wouldn't it be possible to simply copy the entire hash of junk that the Zune software spits out, and then using linux, spit the same copy/pasted stuff?  just a simple idea that I'm sure would be worth trying out..07:00
SIR_TacoLinkmaster: not exactly unfortunately07:02
Linkmasterhm, didn't think so. figured that I could see though07:03
Linkmasterand I know that brute-forcing the key[while it will eventually get the answer] will take way to long..07:03
SIR_TacoLinkmaster: probably longer than I've been alive or more :)07:04
LinkmasterYeahh, especially if they use a super strong key[which they probably do]07:05
LinkmasterI wish they did somethign dumb, like iPod did, you know...512bit key? xD07:05
LINKSWORD2lol07:06
SIR_Tacothat wasn't dumb... they firgured it out via hardware... then later software flaws07:06
LINKSWORD2How about a 128-bit key? lol07:06
LinkmasterNono, I meant like iPod encrypted it of course, just not the strongest key. some russians bought an iPod, took it apart, slipped the flash thingy into their computer, and brute-forced the key07:08
LinkmasterLINKSWORD2: 128 is starting to sound like WEP here...07:08
SIR_TacoLinkmaster: not quite07:09
SIR_TacoLinkmaster: they brute forced weak passwords holding the keys07:10
LinkmasterSIR_Taco: I mean, the Zune has already been hacked, look here: http://www.zuneboards.com/?p=vB50442 its just a matter of getting that one key. if that could be found, then...answer solved07:10
SIR_TacoLinkmaster: the "Master Key" as it's called, is not easily found07:11
LinkmasterTo find this answer I'm actually going to have to boot up my Winblows. darn, been able to let it rot for 20 days now07:11
LINKSWORD2LMAO!07:11
LinkmasterSIR_Taco: its meant not to be :D07:11
SIR_TacoLinkmaster:  yes I know... but I don't think you understand the depth of the problem.... having said that I hope you solve it, but it's not a weeked project07:12
LinkmasterI know its not a weekend project, I know its probably barely a summers project. but I'd like to at least contribute something to Linux, and well....if it means I find this, then heck. a lot of people will be happy[I know that quite a few dual-booters only do so for the zune]07:13
SIR_TacoLinkmaster: most programming is scratching an itch... if this is your itch than have at 'er :)07:14
* Linkmaster is going to need to learn very quickly as well..he's dabbled in far to many languages07:14
SIR_Taconow I'm in a Great Big Sea mood... lol07:15
Linkmasterwhats that mean?07:16
SIR_TacoLinkmaster: it's a band07:17
Linkmasterok07:17
LinkmasterOh, I linked you to that OpenZDK thing..having access to the entire Zunes innards, while it still being able to sync with the Zune software was a big deal...using the same lines, couldn't the "I need yyyy key to have write-access' simply be...remove?07:18
* Linkmaster knows that this probably won't work, but is still throwing the idea around07:18
SIR_TacoLinkmaster: I really think you're stuck unless you can find the master key.... but honestly that's just me speculating07:19
LinkmasterSIR_Taco: thats where I end up going myself07:20
LinkmasterLinux has much more power then Win* has...I can sort of view whats in the Zune with Dolphin...maybe, using the right tools, I can get a look into the OS of the Zune...having done that, I can search for the place of the 'key' and then..having the zuneHD key, go backwards to find the software key?07:21
SIR_TacoI really need to think harder as to how to explain the complexity of this to you07:23
LinkmasterSIR_Taco: Don't think I don't understand the complexity. I'm critical thinking here, running out the ideas that won't work07:24
SIR_TacoLinkmaster: that's not what I meant exactly07:24
StepNjumpHi guys, I cannot connect to the internet any more.. Anyone familiar with networking here tonight?07:25
LinkmasterSIR_Taco: dont' worry, I'm not offended (:07:25
LinkmasterStepNjump: depends..give us some more information and we can help07:25
StepNjumpWell, it's been a long time Linkmaster. It's an old kubuntu box that I would like to put back in service but I forget what I used to do back then to reconnect the lan back on. I used to type something in the terminal...07:26
LinkmasterStepNjump: you can try to scan your network if its hidden, but we don't know much to give advice to07:27
StepNjumpWhen I do a ifconfig linkmaster, I get inet adr: 127.0.0.107:27
Linkmasterlocal port? thats awkward..07:27
Linkmaster*address that is07:27
StepNjumpFrom what I remember, it stopped working after I installed a firewall.. It's vague07:27
SIR_Tacoif it's old (and an old Linux install) it's probably just "dhcpd"07:28
StepNjumpLinkmaster, yes I used to do something to get it started07:28
StepNjumpYES!07:28
StepNjumpthat's it SIR_TACO07:28
StepNjumpI think it was that07:28
SIR_Tacoshould be :)07:29
StepNjumpSIR_TACO nope... it's not installed07:29
StepNjumpIt was similar to that though07:29
StepNjumpI wrote it down somewhere.. but where!???07:29
SIR_TacoStepNjump: that gave you an error? did you run it with "sudo"07:30
SIR_Taco?07:30
StepNjumpcommand not found07:30
LINKSWORD2Well, all.... I think it's past my bedtime. Breakfast @ the church tomorrow morning!07:31
Linkmasternight LINKSWORD207:31
LINKSWORD2See ya'll later!07:31
StepNjumpDo new 11.04 kubuntu still run KDE? I know it's a stupid question but I hate universe07:32
SIR_TacoStepNjump: "sudo dhcpd" gives you that?07:32
StepNjumpyes SIR_Taco07:32
StepNjumpno possibility to do a sudo get-apt install :(07:32
SIR_TacoStepNjump: yes, it still runs KDE07:32
StepNjumpThanks gracious!07:32
SIR_TacoStepNjump: just have to think back a bit.... lol07:33
StepNjumpI like this installation.. it even has the visual effects beautifully installed :(07:33
StepNjumplol07:33
StepNjumpI used to type my commands on two lines07:33
StepNjumpto revive the network07:33
StepNjumpetc0 something07:34
StepNjumpeth007:34
SIR_TacoStepNjump: its wired then?07:35

SIR_Tacohow about "sudo dhclient eth0"07:36
StepNjumpsounds familiar07:36

StepNjumpYou are GOOD!!07:37
StepNjumplol07:37
StepNjumpThank you so much!07:37
SIR_Tacoyou're welcome07:38
StepNjumpWhy do I need to keep doing this everytime I try to get the internet working?07:38
SIR_TacoStepNjump: as a side note... you should be able to omit the "eth0" at the end....07:38
StepNjumpok07:39
Linkmasterbooting into windows....07:40
* Linkmaster shudders07:40
SIR_TacoLinkmaster: bon chance07:40
Linkmasterthanks :P07:41
SIR_TacoStepNjump: give me a second and I'll remember how to make it work on boot.... what version of kubuntu/ubuntu are you running?07:41
StepNjumpSIR_Taco, when I try to fetch my updates, it gives me: Failed to fetch http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/b/binutils/binutils_2.20.1-3ubuntu7_i386.deb 404 Not Found... Should I update my repositories?07:42
StepNjumpSIR_Taco, I don't remember :(07:42
StepNjumpHow could I find?07:42
SIR_Tacolsb-release -a          should tell you07:44
StepNjumpno, it was not installed07:44
StepNjumpsorry07:44
StepNjumpI was using a -, not a _07:45
StepNjumpOh, it's just a 10.04, I thought it was older than that.. Weird.. It says ubuntu, not kubuntu .. Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS07:45
SIR_TacoStepNjump: yes it will say Ubuntu, that's not a problem07:46
StepNjumpk07:46
StepNjumpYep, nothing works when I even try to install 'where'07:48
SIR_TacoStepNjump:  can you do a "sudo apt-get install update-manager-core" in the terminal (konsole or anything else)?07:48
LinkmasterSIR_taco: just installed xchat, so I've got IRC now07:49
StepNjumpLooks like I already have the lastest version of update-manager-core SIR_Taco07:49
SIR_TacoStepNjump: ok, then try "sudo do-release-upgrade"07:50
SIR_TacoLinkmaster: and you didn't before?07:50
StepNjumpok thanks, let me see07:50
StepNjumpNot lucky tonight: No new release found07:51
SIR_TacoStepNjump: ok, then try "sudo do-release-upgrade -d"07:51
LinkmasterSIR_Taco: I never bothered, since the most I ever log into windows is for...15 minutes? the last time I did was almost a month ago07:51
SIR_TacoLinkmaster: ah ok... you know you can get Quassel for Windows? haha07:52
LinkmasterYou can?07:52
* Linkmaster goes off to get it07:52
SIR_TacoLinkmaster: download the "full" one... not the client/server separate...07:53
Linkmasteroh?07:53
LinkmasterI'm getting the monolithic one if thats what you mean07:54
SIR_TacoLinkmaster: yea, that's what I meant...07:54
Linkmastercool stuff07:54
StepNjumpok SIR_Taco, I will try the -d version now07:54
SIR_TacoStepNjump: ok07:55
StepNjumpOk it's doing stuff now07:55
SIR_TacoStepNjump: it should get you up to the latest, but you will definitely have to restart at some point07:56
StepNjumpok, np... irc is on windoze anyway07:57
StepNjumpso I'll stay here whilst it reboots07:57
SIR_Tacook sounds good07:57
Linkmasterusing quassel, much happier07:57
StepNjumpYou guys must have gotten a lot of Ubuntu users that switched over to Kubuntu with 11.04 crap... Good for Kubuntu indeed!07:58
StepNjumpOh it says it might take hours!07:58
SIR_TacoStepNjump: depends on your connection, it needs to download a lot of files07:59
StepNjumpIs it safe for my files?07:59
StepNjumpOr should I back them up first?08:00
StepNjumpI would like to format my pendrive under EXT3 but can't figure out how. I don't have gparted installed..08:00
SIR_TacoStepNjump: it only updates programs.... it wont affect your home directory. But it's always good to have a backup just incase.08:02
StepNjumpYes, I only have a few files.. but at times, I get stuck when I put them on a NTFS ext HDD because I use the extended character set in my files...08:03
StepNjumpHow could I format my pendrive in EXT3?08:03
StepNjumpWhat is the equivalent of gparted in KDE?08:03
StepNjumpSorry for so many questions08:04
SIR_TacoStepNjump: do you know where the pendrive is? ie: /dev/sd.... etc?08:04
SIR_Taconot a problem08:04
StepNjumpno but it's mounted.. I see it08:04
StepNjumpin dolphin08:04
StepNjumpCan't seem to be able to format it just by right clicking on it08:05
StepNjumpgraphically08:05
SIR_TacoStepNjump: well I would like to think that's a good thing lol08:06
StepNjumpNot for beginners!08:06
SIR_TacoStepNjump: true enough... what is the name of the pendrive in Dolphin?08:08
StepNjumpmmmm08:08
StepNjumpVery creatively enough, it's PENDRIVE08:08
StepNjumpI'm not kidding08:09
StepNjumplol08:09
SIR_TacoStepNjump: ok, so in Konsole (or another terminal) if you "cd /media && ls" does "PENDRIVE" show up?08:10
StepNjumpIn ubuntu, I could do it graphically in nautillus08:10
StepNjumpoh boy! ok lol let me see08:10
StepNjumpthanks again08:10
SIR_Taconp08:10
StepNjumpJust beats my DOS days!08:10
SIR_Tacohaha yes, it's a little different than my DOS days too :P08:11
StepNjumpOk I cd'd into PENDRIVE now: /media/PENDRIVE08:11
StepNjumpDCL looked easy compared to this... maybe it's because I was younger too lol08:12
SIR_TacoStepNjump: You've backed up everything on the "PENDRIVE" that you want?08:12
StepNjumpcopy con autoexec.bat08:12
StepNjumpOh yes, there is nothing left on it. I just want to format it and then move things on it08:13
StepNjumpor back stuff rather08:13
SIR_Tacoor extended memory... haha08:13
StepNjumpbut it's fun, it's fun... I like *nix08:13
StepNjumpoh yeah!!!! Damn I lost so much time with this EMS386 crap08:14
StepNjumphimem.sys08:14
StepNjumpahaha08:14
StepNjumpQuarterdeck08:14
SIR_Tacooh wow... brings back memories08:14
StepNjumpDCL was cool though in VMS08:14
StepNjumpBash shell reminds me of that in a way.08:15
StepNjumpBash shell reminds me of that in a way.08:16
StepNjumpooops sorry08:16
SIR_TacoStepNjump: yes, very much so.... can you find your pendrive when you do "sudo  mount -l"? should have a "/dev/....." entry08:16
StepNjumpmy pendrive is already mounted08:16
SIR_TacoStepNjump: yes, but that command should list all mounted drives, and the devices they're mounted to08:17
StepNjumpoh I see...08:18
StepNjumpWhat are you looking at?08:18
SIR_Taco?08:18
StepNjumpSorry, which one should I look for?08:18
StepNjumpI have about 10 of them08:18
SIR_Tacothere's not one that has "PenDrive" in it?08:19
StepNjumpnope08:19
StepNjumpDon't think so.. let me check again08:19
StepNjumpduh... yes... /dev/sdf108:19
StepNjumpvfat08:19
SIR_Tacook...08:20
SIR_Taconow double check that's the one.... just so we don't mess up something that you want to keep08:20
StepNjumpno that's it08:20
StepNjumpsdf708:20
SIR_Tacook... now sign here in triplicate that this is the one you wish to format... :P08:21
SIR_Taco"sudo mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdf1" will format it to ext308:22
StepNjumplol08:22
StepNjumpok, it has to be that one right...? It's right on the same line as PENDRIVE... it says /dev/sdf1 on media/PENDRIVE08:22
StepNjumpit has to be that one...08:22
StepNjumpShould I sign???08:23
StepNjumplol08:23
StepNjumpok let me try mkfs.ext308:23
SIR_Tacook08:23
StepNjumpok SIR_Taco, it says that it's mounted already and won't work08:25
StepNjumpI guess we need to dismount it?08:25
StepNjumpI can do that graphically.. hold on08:25
SIR_TacoStepNjump: riiiight.... ok so "sudo umount /dev/sdf1" then "sudo mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdf1"08:26
SIR_Tacoright sorry... I'm a little old-school when it comes to this stuff lol08:26
StepNjumpk08:26
StepNjumpold school is good08:29
SIR_Tacoold school works :)08:29
StepNjumpNow it says it's busy.. let me close dolphin08:30
StepNjumpSIR_Taco, peripheral busy08:31
SIR_TacoStepNjump: it's likely still making the filesystem08:31
StepNjumpmmmm08:32
StepNjumpI haven't even started yet08:32
StepNjumpoh yes earlier08:32
StepNjumpoh no I get it08:32
SIR_Tacodo you still have the drive open in Dolpin? or in a terminal?08:32
StepNjumpI'm in the /dev/PENDRIVE right now08:33
StepNjumpso I will cd.. out of it08:33
SIR_Tacoah there you go08:33
StepNjumpto see what happens08:33
SIR_Tacothen you have to unmount it08:33
StepNjumpyep, that was it08:33
StepNjumpOk it's done08:34
StepNjumpawsome... I learned something new today!08:34
StepNjumpThanks a lot08:34
SIR_TacoStepNjump: excellent, you're welcome08:34
SIR_Tacothere may be an easier way to do that... but to me that's the easy way08:36
StepNjumpNo I like it better that wayl.. I am taking notes08:37
StepNjumpNow we have another problem..08:37
StepNjumpLooks like I don't have the permissions to write to it08:37
StepNjumpIs it possible?08:38
StepNjumpchmod08:38
StepNjump?08:38
SIR_TacoStepNjump: even if you mount if with Dolphin?08:39
StepNjumpyes08:39
StepNjumpI tried mkdir test in bash to no avail08:39
SIR_TacoStepNjump: well you can do "sudo chown /dev/sdf1 <username>" where <username> is your user name08:40
StepNjumpI dismounted it via dolphin and now that I reconnected it back, it doesn't show the lost+found folder anymore08:42
StepNjumpweird08:42
StepNjumpIs that what they say: Opening a can of worms? lol08:42
SIR_Tacohaha maybe08:42
StepNjumpthe permissions are rw, nosuid, nodev, uhelper=hal08:44
StepNjumpNow, I'm not a valid user!08:45
StepNjumplol08:45
LinkmasterSIR_Taco: I think I "found" something xD08:45
StepNjumpSIR_Taco, do I need to put my userid in between <>?08:46
StepNjumpchown: user not valid08:47
LinkmasterSIR_Taco: http://pastebin.com/kc59FRNQ if you wish to take a look. Its more likely then not the evil closed source nastyness I'm using then just M$ alone08:47
SIR_TacoStepNjump: no, not between the <>... just the user name... if your user name is 'blah' then it would be "sudo chown /dev/sdf1 blah"08:49
StepNjumpI figured, but it doesn't recognize my userid!08:50
StepNjumpweird, weirder, VERY VERY Weirder!08:50
SIR_Tacosorry... did that backwards... should be "sudo chown blah /dev/sdf1"08:51
SIR_TacoLinkmaster: no, it's just a HEX nightmare lol08:52
StepNjumpoh! That would explain it.. let me try08:52
LinkmasterSIR_Taco: so its nothing significant?08:52
SIR_TacoLinkmaster: it could be, but who knows.... it's  hex dump08:53
LinkmasterHm. I shall see if I can find a way to translate it08:53
SIR_TacoLinkmaster: that's the trick08:53
=== daniel__ is now known as deadlock

SIR_TacoStepNjump: did it work?08:56

SIR_Taco0-9 A-F08:59
StepNjumpnope, still no go...08:59
StepNjumpI'm starting to think maybe it has to do with the fact that it's a SanDisk cruzer.. maybe it needs a password.. Well, all the drivers are off!08:59
SIR_Tacocan anyone help StepNjump get his pendrive to mount with user permissions? It's 4am an I'm half asleep09:00
SIR_TacoStepNjump: that shouldn't have anything to do with it09:00
LinkmasterI try not to mess with permissions, being fairly noobish at the moment09:00
StepNjumpoh SIR_Taco, don't worry... Go to bed my friend... I'm just learning here for fun. It's not a big deal at all!09:01
StepNjumpSorry, I should have asked you if you were tired.09:01
StepNjumpI might do the same as a matter of fact lol.. I learned a few things so it's fun09:01
StepNjumpThanks for all you have done... Sleep well!09:01

plandreamIt is mounted we must find the crrect entry first10:36
StepNjumpIt was unmounted now10:36
plandreamoh10:36
StepNjumplet me do the sudo mount again10:36
StepNjumpok it's mounted now by removing it and then connecting it again10:37
plandreamok10:37
StepNjumpand sudo mount gives me stuff still but nothing that has to do with sdf110:37
plandreamhmmm10:37
plandreamno /dev/sdf1 entry?10:38

StepNjumpAh.... I found something weird10:54
StepNjumpIt's seems to be mounted but when I look in /media, there's nothing there!10:54
cousin_marioStepNjump: touch /media/pendrive/test10:55
StepNjumpmario, there's nothing in /media other than the floppies10:56

StepNjumpok now it's mounted /media/test10:57
StepNjumpcousin_mario: I did a sudo touch /media/test.. it echos nothing10:58
robb4nHi, guys.. It seems that ive got some problems vid Kubuntu, sometimes when i start/boot it hangs up and an blue background only shows up and i cant do anything.. I did google it, i did update my nvidia driver to knewest but i have same problem .10:58
cousin_marioStepNjump: touch /media/test/testfile then10:59
StepNjumpok cousin_mario.. I'm new to linux but I did a sudo mkdir testfile and it created it with the terminal, but didn't work using dolphin11:00
cousin_marioStepNjump: I think the concept of mountpoint still evades you11:01
cousin_marioStepNjump: cd to whatever the current mountpoint for /dev/sdf1 is11:01
StepNjumpcousin_mario, yes it created the file testfile11:01
StepNjumpok, so the problem must be with dolphin!11:02
cousin_marioStepNjump: do you also see a lost+found directory?11:02
StepNjumpI see them in dolphin but when I right click and try to create a folder, it will not do it11:02
StepNjumpyes sir11:02
StepNjumpIt works in terminal but not in dolphin11:03
StepNjumpMaybe I should install nautilus11:03
StepNjumpis it recommendable for kubuntu?11:03
cousin_marioStepNjump: can you write on it using the command line without resorting to sudo?11:03
StepNjumpI don't think so.. let me check11:04
robb4nanyone who know what it can be?11:04
StepNjumpyou are right: permission non accordée11:04
StepNjumpPermission not granted11:04
cousin_marioStepNjump: then do a chown -R on the mountpoint11:05
cousin_marioStepNjump: or just a chmod11:05
StepNjumpon the mountpointÉ11:05
StepNjump?11:05
cousin_marioStepNjump: yes11:05
StepNjumpdo I need to specify my userid in the command line?11:06
cousin_marioStepNjump: yes and the group too while you're at it11:06
cousin_marioStepNjump: you can find both via 'id'11:07
StepNjumpmmmm.. I just did a sudo chown myuserid /dev/sdf1 at the /media/volume_name level11:07
StepNjumpnope! Still no permission granted11:08
cousin_marioo.O11:09
cousin_marioStepNjump: 'sudo chown -R userid:groupid /media/mydirectory'11:09
StepNjumpOk sorry for being this green but where do I find my groupid?11:10

StepNjumpWow.. All night to find this!11:13
StepNjumpThank you very much!11:13
StepNjumpIs there a problem with my kernel?11:13
cousin_marioit's basic stuff, I suggest you look for some linux 101 to avoid banging your head on the desk for things like these11:14
cousin_mariobash, even11:14
StepNjumpYes well... grrrr11:14
StepNjumpI used to learn this stuff easy on Vax when I was younger but now approaching 50, the learning curve is somewhat steeper11:15
cousin_mariohehe, I remember VMS as well11:15
cousin_mariobut it's not so similar, unless you meant Ultrix11:15
StepNjumpWell thanks again a million cousin_mario... You were the only one that could help me11:15
cousin_marioStepNjump: yw11:15
StepNjumpI know, not similar at all11:15
StepNjumpVMS seemed so simple compared to *nix11:16
StepNjumpit was logical11:16
cousin_marioyes, I think I had the same impression11:16
cousin_mariobut it was probably also less flexible11:16
StepNjumpProbably11:16
cousin_marioI saw an emulator somewhere, in case you wanted to have fun11:16
StepNjumpThere are so many ways to do the same thing it seems in bash11:17
StepNjumpI miss the filenames.extension;version_numbers from VMS11:17
cousin_marioI don't miss the SET DEF[dir] thing11:17
StepNjumpwould be nice to develop this here on linux11:17
StepNjumppurge filename 1-1011:18
cousin_marioI think the system I was on had some script in its place to navigate directories11:18
StepNjumpOh boy! lol set def11:18
cousin_mariounless there was a simpler way i don't know of11:18
StepNjumpbut this idea of keeping all the versions was so cool11:19
StepNjumpI never saw that anywhere else11:19
cousin_marioI think ZFS (and possibly btrfs) has something like that11:19
StepNjumpyou could go back on your code at any point in time11:19
StepNjumpWe need that on linux!11:19
StepNjumpok, got to go zzzzz.. But thanks again a million cousin11:20
cousin_mariowell, I think CVS are used now11:20
cousin_mariook, bye11:21
StepNjumpCan you use linux on CVS?11:21
StepNjumpbsd11:21
cousin_marioStepNjump: CVSs are OS-agnostic, usually11:22
cousin_mariothe code they contain is usually not, though11:22

iliaswhich is best 10.04 or 11.04? i am running already on my laptop 10.04 and is perfect. i installed it on my desktop and i faced a graphic card driver's problem. i am considering to go on 11.04 to go beyond this issue. is it the right choise or there is a solution to solve the driver's problem and stay on 10.04?14:34
BluesKajilias, depends on the graphics card , but I haven't had a graphics prob on 11,04 with either of my nvidia equipped pcs14:36
iliasmy card is actually an nvidia/gforce. the same issue (icons pixelized) i had using opensuse 11.3. both 11,3 and 10.04 probably they are using the same driver!14:38

iliasis there any option to search for a driver?14:57
kubu2the kernel will load it14:58
lcbilias: 2 things.. after inserting the usb device run $ lspci. you might see your device listed. on /dev directory you'll have an additional video, for instance /dev/video0 or /dev/video114:59
kubu2ilias: not all devices are supported.  you know what type/model you have and go to linuxtv.org15:00
iliasyes i know all these. but these are not enough. there must be a driver for the device to work properly. is there any library to find it?15:00

BluesKajcuco, it reverts to the default repos in order to upgrade , you'll probly need to reinstall the restricted extras as well as the medibuntu repos etc if you need them17:01

LibraratI have an asus n53sv laptop, have set up media keys in system settings, and tried to lsmod various asus modules, but nothing seems to be working for my media keys.  I started a thread in the ubuntu forums (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1768832) and have yet to find a solution. Tried to use a git repo listed there for more up-to-date ahci support, but wasn't able to get it to compile. Anyone have any thoughts/tips?17:42

Peace-Monika: you could reinstall every kde package18:03
MonikaIs there an easy way to do this?18:03
MonikaI tried reinstalling kubuntu-desktop, but as it's just a meta package, nothing happened.18:03
Peace-Monika: wait18:05
JKAbramsMonika: i had lots of problems upgrading to 11.04, tried reinstalling all kde-related packages to no avail, when I reinstalled the nvidia driver I got into kde, but it was broken (the desktop was in fact on top of the windows) that was fixed by letting nvidia settings make a new xorg.conf file (i found a trick to make the windows show), then finally I had a working desktop, but no applications had menus, I located18:25
JKAbramsthat problem to two files yesterday: /home/<user>/.kde/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc and /home/<user>/.kde/share/config/plasma-desktoprc deliting theese files fixed my menus (but you will loose any customized widget-setup)18:25
MonikaHowever, the same problem occurred with a new user, so there cannot have been broken settings for that one.18:26
JKAbramsyeah, but xorg.conf is not a per user-file18:27
Monikaok I will reconfigure xorg18:28

Monikais this a command?18:47
JKAbramsLinkmaster: i'm gonna clean them a bit from personal data and then verify that they still cause the issue, then i'll paste them for you18:47
LinkmasterJKAbrams: thats fine18:47
Monikadoesn't seem like it18:47
Monikaalso, the affected netbook did not have any PPAs in the sources list18:47
BluesKajMonika, it is if you have ppa-purge installed18:48
Monikawhat exactly does it do? only remove ppas from the sources.list or also remove installed things that came from ppas?18:49
JKAbramswhen I upgraded the upgrade process itself removed my applications installed from ppa, replaced them with stable versions and inactivated the ppa's in the list18:50
BluesKajMonika, mkae sure by checking /etc/apt/sources.list.d/18:51

BluesKajLINKSWORD2, do you mean unaffiliated ?19:24
LINKSWORD2Uh... What? lol19:25
BluesKajLINKSWORD2, cloaked19:27
LINKSWORD2OK, lemme explain. Microsoft's MSN (Windows Live Messenger) gives you the ability to sign in with a default status, of which I choose "Appear Offline", which some other messengers, i.e. Pidgin, list as "Invisible."19:27
BluesKajinvisible is a poor choice of words19:28
LINKSWORD2Perhaps, but I hope that I have made my intentions clear, at this point.19:29
