[03:14] hello [03:14] I have a question [03:15] need help please [03:15] with just one thing [03:15] how do I enable compiz permanently [03:16] I tried compiz --replace that gets it working but only untill you restart [03:17] is anyone even on? [03:18] AAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh!!!!! [03:18] lol [03:19] mcw, jumps off cliff due to frustration with Unity [03:19] fuck it! [05:56] Hello. I am in the process of installing Ubuntu and need a little assistance please. [05:57] Keith_Lassiter: hey... are you currently actually installing? [05:57] I downloaded the file and am attempting to mkae the CD [05:58] AH, ok [05:58] make* [05:58] you'll need to actually make a copy [05:58] using the downloaded iso as the source* [05:59] According to the directions it tells me I downloaded the ubuntu11.04 from the main page.. and now I have a zip file [05:59] So I inzipped [05:59] unzipped [05:59] shouldnt be a zip... where did you get it? [05:59] The file that is.. LOOL [05:59] Also downloaded Infra Recorder [06:00] BUt can't determine which file I am supposed to use to create the CD [06:00] Keith_Lassiter: im not convinced you have the correct file [06:00] http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download [06:00] it should be one file, a something.iso [06:01] That is what it said when it was downloading.. then when it finished, it came out as a zip file.. Kina wierd actually [06:01] Keith_Lassiter: it might be recognized as something that can be unzipped [06:01] but, it should have been ubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.iso [06:01] nothing weird about it [06:01] not ubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.zip [06:02] what did you download? ubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.iso ? [06:02] I just clicked the link where it said download [06:02] it showed me the iso file while it was downloading [06:02] Keith_Lassiter: right, look in the /download directory [06:02] and tell me if you have ubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.iso or not [06:02] and if not, what do you have? [06:03] ubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386 [06:03] jZip archive file (.iso) [06:03] Keith_Lassiter: right, just dont unzip it [06:04] you have ubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.iso downloaded, and thats what you burn to CD [06:04] ok, so don't unzip it and create the CD with the zip file? [06:04] you make a copy of the CD using the ubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.iso as the source [06:04] Keith_Lassiter: its not a zip file, but yes [06:04] ok, it says its a jzip archive file [06:05] Keith_Lassiter: jzip recognizes it as an iso archive, and is offering to extract it [06:05] but, thats not what you want to do [06:06] Keith_Lassiter: if you extracted it, you can just throw all of that away, and work with the ubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.iso [06:06] OK, another quick question.. the file size is showing 701MGB and the CDs only have 700 in sace.. SHould I use a DVD instead? [06:06] Keith_Lassiter: you can* [06:06] it *should* be cd sized [06:07] i would probably try it, and you should get an error if its too big [06:07] its likely your OS is estimating its size [06:08] Keith_Lassiter: the only reason *not* to burn to DVD is if you cant boot DVD's on the machine in question [06:08] Gotcha .. ok, I am burning the CD as we speak [06:08] The idea her eis to try it before I install it [06:09] yup, try it live [06:09] see how everthing works, hardware wise [06:09] So will this thing run all my windows aps and such? [06:10] ? [06:10] i dought it [06:10] I have been reading on it and it said something about replaceing my current operating system with htis. [06:10] you can ask the vendors if they support linux though [06:10] anyone can write software for linux/ubuntu [06:10] Keith_Lassiter: yup, thats up to you [06:11] but, running your current windows apps is no the goal [06:11] the idea is, you probably will find you dont need the windows apps in question* [06:11] So there should be Linux/Ubuntu aps to replace what I use now then. [06:12] we have WINE though, which can run a lot of windows apps with varying degrees of success [06:12] Keith_Lassiter: there will be, you just need to learn how to use them [06:12] OR, look around for linux verions of what you need [06:12] or get the windows apps to run [06:13] Keith_Lassiter: for most cases, what comes default in ubuntu is plenty [06:14] Keith_Lassiter: i think its important to realize that its not windows [06:14] nor is it trying to replace or emulate windows [06:14] ubuntu is a fully functional operating system that any company can choose to write software for and support [06:15] weather or not it works for you is totally up to you [06:15] I am finding that out. It appears as though at best I will be running it alongside Windows for some time. [06:15] but, i think its realistic to go in expecting something differnt [06:15] Keith_Lassiter: lots of folks do [06:15] dual boot* [06:16] I have webisites and sales programs that may still require Windows for some of the functions to work correctly. A lot of PHO [06:16] PHP [06:16] yup [06:16] thats the P in LAMP :) [06:17] anyways... do what makes you feel comfortable [06:17] I appreciate your hel[. Gonna try it out and see how it works [06:17] please do, ask whatever you need :) [06:17] I was told by my Service support people from HP that it may even be able to ready my HD that recently crashed [06:18] Keith_Lassiter: how bad? [06:18] is it still spinning? [06:18] Windows is saying "No hard drive present".. LOL [06:18] http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec is what i use [06:18] as long as the drive can still spin* [06:19] Haven't taken it out of the laptop. It under warranty and getting ready to ship it off to HP [06:19] Keith_Lassiter: well, you wont get the old HD back anyways [06:19] So my last backup was a few weeks agoi. Been working out of town. [06:19] If I am lucky, I can save myself a lot of work. [06:20] i use photorec either in ubuntu or from a live cd like http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ [06:20] Right, that's why I am going to try to retrieve the info before I ship it to HP. [06:20] Keith_Lassiter: you can see if ubuntu sees it, but, if its clicking and dying, photorec is probably the best chance [06:21] i usually get it going, and just let it 'chew' on the data for as long as it needs [06:21] Is photorec on the ultimatebootCD alredy? [06:22] yeah, partedmagic is on there [06:22] has photorec/test disk and all kinds of handy HD tools (and other goodies) [06:23] someone mentioned this at our LUG the other day http://www.hackfromacave.com/katana.html [06:24] I will try it.. I have the Blackboot CD which has always doen a good job for me.. but it didn't see the HD [07:29] tala du svenska? [07:33] !se [07:33] Svensk Ubuntu- och Kubuntusupport hittar du i #ubuntu-se resp. #kubuntu-se === semitones is now known as sillytones [08:20] superwoman! ;) [08:57] hi all === bioterror is now known as Outo_Jopo-Mies === Outo_Jopo-Mies is now known as bioterror [11:07] o/ === khader is now known as raju === raju is now known as raja === raja is now known as raju [11:37] hi, i'm fairly new to ubuntu and this is my first time on irc, so apologies in advance for breaking any conventions. i need to install a specialist mindmapping software, named Sciplore, but it isn't in any repository. i've downloaded it as a zip file, but get stuck there. does anybody know how to install such things? [11:46] There's no recipe for such things, apart from extracting the archive somewhere, and look for a README or INSTALL file or similar. [11:47] The site where you found that file might also have documentation on how to proceed. [11:50] thanks geirha, there is some info on the site, but it's too complex for me. i have zero coding skills and little IT skill. i need a dummies guide or someone competent to talk me through it. [11:52] Ok, so you got the Linux Binaries (.zip) from here? http://sciplore.org/software/sciplore_mindmapping/#download [11:54] thanks again geirha. yes, i got it from there [11:55] Ok, create a folder somewhere, perhaps in your homedir or one the desktop. Call it SciPlot or something (whatever you feel is best). [11:55] Doubleclick the zip file, click extract and choose your folder as the place to extract the archive. [11:56] The folder you just created that is. [11:57] Now you should see three files named SciploreMindMapping with extensions .bat, .exe and .sh. [11:58] The .bat and .exe files are for windows users, ignore them, right-click on SciploreMindMapping.sh and choose Properties, then in the Permissions tab, mark the checkbox to make it executable. [11:58] After that double-clicking SciploreMindMapping.sh should start the program. [12:00] Are you with me, or did I lose you at some point? :) [12:01] so sorry, i've just switched to 11.04 and am trying to work through the new UI....i'm not enjoying it. [12:02] can you give me 10 mins to catch up pleae? [12:03] Ah, I'm sticking with 10.04 myself. Haven't tried the new UI at all. [12:04] Maybe someone else here can translate my instructions to the new UI (if they differ) [12:05] i'm hoping it's the same once past the UI. this new UI (unity?) is taking a lot of getting used to. should be back with you in 5 mins though [12:08] geirha, you're a genius. it's all working. thank you so much. [12:09] \o/ [12:09] Can someone help me with an issue on bootup? [12:10] Laftur, there's a rule here that says don't ask to ask, just ask :D or something like that lol [12:10] anyway what's ur problem [12:11] I'm trying to boot from a USB drive or a CD, and it just freezes on a purple loading screen. [12:12] it takes a little bit to load, but how much rams do u have on ur computer? [12:13] 4 Gigabytes. [12:13] how long have u tried to leave it before u give up and turn it off? [12:14] I've left it for around five minutes. [12:14] is it just a purple screen? or is there an ubuntu spalsh screen? [12:14] It says Ubuntu, and there are some dots below, indicating some sort of action. [12:15] I assumed it wouldn't take too terribly long to load, but do you think I should try leaving it for longer? [12:16] it loads the whole system to the ram only, it takes a bit [12:17] It shouldn't take five minutes on a machine with 4GiB RAM though, so it does sound like something's wrong. [12:17] u sure the cd is fine? no scratches or any thing? [12:17] Is the machine frozen? Does hitting caps lock toggle the caps lock led on your keyboard? [12:18] Oh, yes.. It's brand new... and I also tried booting from a USB drive: same thing happens. [12:18] it's not frozen... there's even a cursor that I can maneuver with my trackpad. [12:19] Most likely it's having some trouble with the graphics hardware [12:20] I've got a Radeon HD 4200 series chipset. [12:20] When you boot with the cd, you'll see a purple screen for a few seconds, it has an image of a man and a keyboard. If you hit some key at that point, you should get a boot menu. [12:21] In the boot menu you can try to select something like safe graphics mode [12:21] Yes, and I instructed it to load from the disc/usb device. [12:21] There are more options, which you access with the F1-F6 keys [12:21] oh... that sounds like a good idea, I'll try that, and get back to you. [16:03] having trouble installing the server edition 11.04. The install hangs after the disk partitioner window pops up and leaves me with a purple screen, any suggestions? [16:04] if i am running a intel atom 4 core processor should i use 36 or 64bit intaller? [16:04] brb [16:04] Guest62964: there are some options in the installer that i would suggest trying, but that could be a bad install image too [16:05] Guest62964: personally, i would install 10.04 server edition [16:05] I tried both the AMD64 and the i386 versions... [16:05] that shouldng matter [16:05] however, you should confirm the md5 sum [16:05] and look at those options [16:06] in 10.04, i believe its F4 or F6 and the first boot splash [16:06] you can pass options there like 'nomodeset' [16:08] what is the md5 sum? [16:11] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Md5sum [16:12] Guest62964: there are other sum methods as well... basically, its a way to confirm the image you download is the same as what you expect it to be [16:12] Stockholm_Angel: if you have a dought, just get the 32-bit [16:12] nothing really deal-breaking anymore with running a 64bit linux install though, assuming your hardware supports it [16:14] Guest62964: i suggest http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/ubuntu-10.04.2-server-i386.iso [16:14] unless you want 64bit http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/ubuntu-10.04.2-server-amd64.iso [16:14] ^ trouble shoot that installer IF you have the same issues [16:15] holstein: tack [16:15] thanks sorry i forgot this is english speaking channel [16:16] umm, i have a eeepc seashell series machine [16:16] 1gb ram 2gb swap [16:19] OK, thanks I'll try and confirm the image and install i386 [16:20] Guest62964: OK, but, just for the record, i suggest you download the 10.04 verion, try that install, and go from there [16:20] version* [16:21] I'll give the 11.04 one more chance, and then download the 10.4 Thanks for the advice! [16:21] Guest62964: its more than advice [16:22] the 10.04 version is the LTS - long term support [16:22] i dont think anyone would argue that the LTS server edition *should* be used [16:23] OK, you convinced me, downloading 10.4 now! [17:01] hi all i'm new to the whole linux thing and i was wondering.. i have a 64 bit computer does it really make a difference between 32 bit and 64 bit ubuntu? === ikonia_ is now known as ikonia [19:03] OK, I downloaded 10.04 and have the same result. I work thru the beginning of the install and after the I verify the time zone the disk partitioner window briefly pops up and then I get a blank blue screen with a white bottom, suggestions?
