=== nlsthzn is now known as nlsthzn-work [05:28] i need help about ubuntu 11.04, virtualbox 4.0.8 and iphone 4 [05:28] someone, please....? [05:28] haha wow thats a lot to need help with whats up? [05:29] thanks :) explaining the scenario... [05:29] ubuntu is the host, using virtualbox to create a windows 7 virtual machine [05:30] i downloaded the add-ons the usb file that make usb ports to work, everything ok until now [05:30] iphone 4 jailbroken, with openssh installed [05:31] the problem: i connect the iphone, the w7 recognizes it, open it as a camera (normal behavior) BUT i cant connect to it via winscp [05:32] question: is there a way to connect the iphone to a w7 virtual machine via winscp ( to save some photos before sync and losing everything)? [05:33] well.. honestly I have never tried to do that, however, maybe we can find a different solution. I take it your main goal is to pull photos off your iphone? [05:34] yes, i'm planning to sync it the normal way with itunes after that, but first i need to save that photos [05:34] i'm open to any ideas [05:35] I don't have an IPhone, but do have an ipad and ipod, and I have found that I have been able to pull media off of them through ubuntu directly without a need for itunes. My only concern is if they label their photos like the ipad does its music and if they do, if you have a lot of photos, it might suck to get the photo names correct [05:36] but I can't see any issue with pulling all of the files off through Ubuntu. You may have jacked up file names, but the photos I think would be there [05:36] oh thats not a problem here, the photos doesnt have names anyway [05:37] the problem is: they are not in the camera roll [05:37] they are in that album that sync with your images library [05:37] if you plug the iphone into ubuntu, without vm running, do you get a little pop up asking if you want to use such and such image viewer? [05:38] yes, it asks to open banshee and shotwell [05:38] ok wait one [05:39] shotwell doesnt show any photos (since it only show photos that are in the camera roll) and banshee doesnt show any music (i really dont know why) [05:39] music is not the problem, i can get them again....but i cant take the photos again :) [05:40] Hmm.. the Banshee thing is odd, as with my ipad it works perfectly. I have to admit, with the camera thing I have little xp with. I'm kinda anti apple and have only a little xp with working with them. lemme google a couple of things [05:41] sure, thank you very much for your help man [05:42] hey dude no worries.. Its usually a tough crowd in the linux world, and I still consider myself a newbie. People are rough. God forbid you ask a question most of the time eh?:) [05:43] how many pics do you have? [05:43] 330 [05:43] shit there goes the email method haha [05:43] LOL [05:43] not an option here [05:44] i tried with gtkpod, but it only get the thumbnails [05:44] 16x16, horrible [05:44] while im reading a couple things, I have to get my shots in.. Im just sayin... I dont have this problem with my evo;) [05:44] sorry lol couldnt help it [05:45] i'm really considering to get another phone [05:45] iphone is amazing, but...since i made ubuntu my only system, i'm stuck in this point [05:45] I work in the wireless communication world. If ou ever have any questions just let me know [05:46] sure [05:46] what smartphone do you recommend? [05:47] oh i just remembered....is it viable to use ubuntu one or dropbox to upload the photos? [05:47] You a huge fan of ATT? [05:48] it's not an option here on brazil [05:48] but ebay is :) [05:49] haha.. I use the evo from sprint, which is the same as the thunderbolt with Verizon and the Inspire for ATT. The phone has a nice large screen and is super powered under the hood [05:50] it all boils down to network with that phone [05:51] Okay man.. not saying its gonna be easy.. but so far the only close solution Ive found is the following blog: [05:51] better than iphone? i still have to see a better phone that it here [05:51] http://birdynumnum.wordpress.com/2010/12/15/how-to-get-your-iphone-ios-4-2-1-to-work-with-ubuntu-10-10/ [05:52] not sure what your options are down there but yea.. friends who used to brag about their iphone are now trying to get out of their contract to get the htc evo or one of its brothers [05:53] just the processor alone is damn near double the speed.. brb gonna go smoke [05:54] hmmm [05:54] 4.3.3 here, but i'll try lets see [06:02] thats for installing libmobiledevice [06:03] its not in the repositories anymore [06:03] what about fuse? [06:09] not sure.. hold on [06:10] don't know what im doing here....just installed some fuse and gvfs files....i remember i did read about it in some sites.... [06:13] when you plug in your iphone into ubuntu can you get access tothe dcim folder? [06:16] yes [06:16] DCIM>100APPLE>nothing [06:18] the thumbnails are in another folder, with strange names [06:18] CDFG.jpg, for example [06:19] Yea APple names things random names which is tracked through a database to try and keep people from doing what you are trying to do [06:19] lol [06:19] they do the same thing with music too [06:19] damn apple [06:20] yeah, the musics are in another folder, same strange names [06:20] well [06:20] at least is there a way to upload the photos to ubuntu one? [06:21] yea.. dude Im not having much luck find much else.. wish I was more help [06:21] or....will i lose quality if i send them to my email? [06:22] no man, i apreciate very much your efforts, really thank you [06:22] i foud some docs, but they were for gentoo....lots of pages of commands and other hacker stuff to do such simple thing, like to save a photo [06:23] you shouldnt lose quality sending to email, as most emails will except much larger then a high def file attachment. Yea.. Like I said man, this is exactly why I refuse to buy anything else apple. They make a great product, as long as you buy nothing but apple and you do things the way they want you too [06:25] i'm really inclined to get and android phone.....maybe samsung or htc, just for the compatibility with ubuntu [06:28] wait, updates available, maybe its the solution... [06:30] Hopefully, on the other note, I highly suggest htc. Anyways.. i gotta crash.. you have a good one man [06:31] not without its flaws... [06:31] testing [06:34] hmmmm banshee recognized the music...reading the tags hmmmmm..... [06:34] erbun: the force is with you man [06:51] yeah yeah anthrax FTW [06:51] well the music problem is solved [06:52] i downloaded something that made banshee recognize properly the device [06:52] now to the photos [07:15] erbun: hey man gtg now, but thank you very very much, really [07:15] yo all [07:16] the music is safe, going to research more about saving the photos [07:16] I installed nautilus for the dropbox functions... I'm wondering if it could be slowing my system down a bit? [07:16] kristian-aalborg: are you in gnome? [07:17] no, openbox [07:17] i believe yes, it could [07:55] i have a question on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Does it ever get updated? As in is there any chance of firefox for example ever being update to firefox 4? === nlsthzn is now known as nlsthzn-work [13:01] since i have installed and started to use hebrew in my natty, spell checking in english is not working. how can i get it back? [13:10] In OpenOffice? [13:12] geirha, in general [13:14] Hm. I think that's upto each application. And I'd expect most applications to use the current language for spell checking. [13:16] let's say in xchat? [13:16] in chromium i found where i can change it [13:16] it's kind of odd, in chromium you cah have only one language to be spell checked [13:21] In firefox I right-click the textarea and choose a different language for spell checking. Haven't tried to do the same in chromium. [13:23] i got it in chromium, now i need xchat [13:26] should have been a place where you can choose the language you want to be spelled check. [13:26] in general [13:34] serfus, I think X-Chat is installed by default. [13:49] Good day all :) [13:49] Gots me a question to ask ya'll [13:52] Shortest question I've ever seen. [13:53] that was [14:20] lol :D [16:08] http://fcoremix.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/djlolcat.jpg [16:25] whos a WIKI master? and wants to help me with an issue? [16:25] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuStudio/TeamReports [16:26] its down at the very bottom... previous reports [16:26] <> [18:18] help my phone is the only way i have of connecting [18:19] i had to use a live cd as ubuntu wont let my tre bredband usb stick be used this is subben as until 3 it was working fine [18:19] its StockholmAngel btw [18:23] also it keeps overheating like 95c [18:25] clean the fan [18:26] its a laptop [18:26] it is only after a new install [18:26] and the machine is 5 months old [18:27] @ bioterror [18:41] hi all [18:41] Hey [18:42] ubuntu__: if its overheating on live CD's, the i would think its hardware as well [18:42] try the ubuntu 10.04 live CD [18:49] holsten its fine now but the room temp is 30c [18:49] i live in a very hot area [18:51] holstein: putting it in the freezer helps [18:51] :D [18:51] ubuntu__: thats hardware [18:51] Now, I'm totally confused. Wanted to look at Unity; burned an 11.04 livecd after md5summing it (A-OK), put it into a dual boot machine (XP and 10.04) no menu (ie: Try Ubuntu, Install), it just boots to the 11.04 desktop. Funny thing is it's 'gotta be Classic, not Unity as I have Applications, Places, System, at the top panel???Did I do somethin' wrong? [18:52] ubuntu__, the freezer's a pretty harsh approach and could actually cause serious disk problems [18:52] julie: oh ok [18:52] sw0rdfish: yup, 3d is not optional [18:52] fridge_ [18:52] Sidewinder1: ^^ [18:52] sw0rdfish: sorry :) [18:52] julie: i just put it in the freezer for 3 mins [18:53] no more [18:53] there is a package *unity-2d or unity2d, but not availalbe by default [18:53] So the only way to see Unity is to install? [18:53] hello holstein [18:53] lol [18:53] ubuntu__: thats a hardware issue, if its 5 months old, you might still be under warranty [18:54] holstein: thing is i move soon from se to fi for work [18:54] fi= finland [18:54] Sidewinder1: there are screenshots... you should be able to install the 2d verion in the live environment, and logout and select it [18:54] ubuntu__: doesnt matter, you got a broken box... depends on what you want to do about it [18:54] ubuntu__ my warning was related to the disk plate's contracting in the freezer [18:54] Sidewinder1: go to edubuntu site they have a thing that you can log into and see what edubuntu is like / it has unity [18:55] ubuntu is just awesome, not magical [18:55] Sidewinder1: you dont have to download it to see what its like [18:55] ubuntu__, in order to get reliable operations on a drive, it should remain at the most stable temperature possible [18:55] its like a virtual machine [18:56] holstein, That's, IMHO, is rather silly; I wanted to play with Unity first (I'm an LTS guy) in a live environment, mostly to familiarize myself with it too help on these channels...:-( [18:58] holstein, Would you happen to have the edubuntu link handy? [18:58] Sidewinder1: unity is default, and gnome is what it gets 'stepped down' to, if the card doesnt have 3d support [18:58] http://www.edubuntu.org/weblive [18:58] ^ looks like [18:59] holstein, That may be it as it's an old system; the sacrificial goat, as it were. [18:59] unity2d should work fine [18:59] try that* [18:59] holstein, Thank you very much! [19:00] julie: tack sa mycket [19:01] ubuntu__, I don't understand that language [19:01] swedish meaning thank you very much, its a very big compliment [19:02] :) [19:10] tala du svenska? anyone [19:19] ubuntu__: check http://loco.ubuntu.com/ [19:20] there might be a very active swedish speaking community, and if not, you should get one started :) [19:31] holstein: jag tala lit svenska [19:31] lol [19:31] i speak very little swedish [19:32] ubuntu__: you personally speak very little swedish? [19:33] holstein: ja, but i speak engelska or english as my first language [19:33] im learning swedisng, danish, icelandic, norwegen and finnish [19:33] swedish* [19:33] ubuntu__: i see.. the off-topic channel is #ubuntu-beginners-team [19:33] ok [19:34] #ubuntu-beginners-team [19:34] #ubuntu-beginners-team [19:34] irssi hard to use [19:35] yeah, /j or /join #channel === yofel_ is now known as yofel [21:23] Hi uhm i am new to the obliviously, but for the last couple days i still cannot get my wireless card to work [21:23] davidhel1234567, what model is it? [22:56] if not, try in a terminal [22:56] nope [22:56] sudo path/to/whatever.run [22:57] elks294: this is something you cant find in the repos? [22:57] or in a PPA? [22:57] command not found [22:57] nope [22:57] OK [22:57] what did you type in? [22:57] sudo path.file [22:58] something like sudo /home/you/Download/whatever.run ?? [22:58] yeah [22:58] im in the dir [22:58] i just did file.run [22:59] right, so this time, in the terminal, use the path [22:59] and let tab autocomplete the path, and the name [22:59] so you are sure you are getting to something that can run [22:59] instead of 'command not found' [23:00] THAT DID IT [23:00] :) [23:00] congrats [23:00] alright. [23:01] now its time to pwn someone [23:01] ?? [23:01] lol [23:01] jk [23:08] elks294: what did you download, a game? :P [23:10] lol === braiam_ is now known as braiam
