jorenHey, so I recently did an ubuntu server install which kept failing on "installing software"  I have a bootable system with apt and everything, but does anyone know if there's a package or virtual package that installes all the extra ubuntu goodies?00:23
jorenit was failing on the "select and install software" step, so whatever software gets installed there, without any of the checkboxes checked00:24

twbDepends on the complexity of the package and its deps05:38

MrPPSxampart: when you're editing the script, instead of piping/outputting it to mail, direct the output to /dev/null07:25

jevidlI am working on a project to setup centrally managed public SSH keys. I had hoped to declare multiple files in the AuthorizedKeysFile statement, but this does not appear possible on most linux implementations, and may only be available on OpenBSD. Does anyone know how to use multiple AuthorizedKeysFile's in Ubuntu, or is this simply not possible?18:24
=== lullabud is now known as warzauwynn
SpamapSjevidl: is that maybe a new feature that hasn't found its way to the version you're using?18:29
jevidlSpamapS: it's quite possible. I didn't see it on *anything* other than openbsd, so that's the most likely answer. it'd just help me out quite a bit, so I figured I'd ask about it just in case someone had found a way, or knew of another way.18:30
jevidlUnfortunately google hasn't been a lot of help. I'm well aware that I can have multiple public keys in my .ssh/authorized_keys file, thank you very much.  :)18:31
SpamapSjevidl: you might look into the new project 'dotdee' that kirkland has been working on .. its good for squishing files together when a program doesn't have a '.d' capability. :)18:31
jevidlIt's not the end of the world if I have to change it, it's just one more thing to change on a number of systems.18:31
jevidlSpamapS: thanks. I'll take a look at that!18:32
SpamapSjevidl: also in Ubuntu we have ssh-import-id (ssh-import-lp-id in old releases I think) that pulls one's launchpad keys into .ssh/authorized_keys .. it would be *awesome* if your service was added to that.18:32
jevidlI'll probably try to do some kind of write up on it, though i am not sure if it will fit in with the way I envision doing it.18:33
jevidlAt the moment I'm looking at using an read only NFS share pushed out to each system that contains public keys for each person. Since it's the *public* key I'm not too worried about the insecurity of it, and it'd let us manage public keys in just one location. Additionally, we could probably write something that triggers when a blacklisted key is used, etc.18:34
jevidlIf I decide that I really want to try to secure it more, I'll probably just look at setting up ipsec between the boxes.18:34
jevidlSo I don't think that'd probably be too helpful with the launchpad stuff. It's meant more for a local environment than for a widely distributed set of users over the internet18:35
TheInfinityhi everyone ... since a (longer) while i have some problems with samba transfer speed using a lucid server + samba. its as slow as 2 minutes for 15 MB. the previous system (debian lenny) did not have this prob. same smb.conf. any hints what to do?18:36
jevidlTheInfinity: Let me dig up the link...18:37
SpamapSjevidl: NFS for security tokens? Are you sure you want to do that?18:37
SpamapSjevidl: thats.. not exactly "safe" ;)18:37
TheInfinitymy smb.conf: http://paste.pocoo.org/show/404146/18:38
SpamapSThink about the case where a mitm just puts their own keys in and then can login as anybody.18:38
jevidlSpamapS: :) well, all it is going to be putting out there is the public key portion of SSH. Unless I have a gross misunderstanding of how that key is used, I think it should be ok since it is by nature the portion that is shared out and is dependent on the private key on someone's local system18:38
jevidlSpamapS: and that's what brought me to the thought of using IPSec as well18:38
SpamapSjevidl: why not just use a proven technology like kerberos?18:38
TheInfinityI dont have a ralink network chipset (i found this bug @ ubuntu forums) - its an Atheros Communications Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCI-E Ethernet Controller (rev b0)18:39
jevidlSpamapS: We do that currently. I was trying to find a way to make it more convenient, and still safe. It's not a perfect idea yet, but I'm trying to find ways to make it better.18:39
jevidlTheInfinity: http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba3-HOWTO/speed.html#id269059618:40
jevidlTheInfinity The Socket Options section might have some useful tuning parameters for you18:40
TheInfinityjevidl: but its the same smb.conf as used in debian lenny?18:41
TheInfinityjevidl: and i already use several recommendet socket options18:41
jevidlTheInfinity: as far as I know the options listed there should work fine. If those tuning things don't help, how does performance look for other TCP based protocols like FTP or even SCP?18:42
TheInfinityjevidl: i'll have a look ... (installing winscp - just windows clients ... its a network 400 km away :) )18:43
jevidlSpamapS: I had considered the possibility of mitm using NFS. Off hand, do you see any other major problems?18:43
jevidlTheInfinity: sure :) The idea is to try to narrow down the problem to either just SAMBA, or to the systems network connection in general18:44
TheInfinityjevidl: yea, the idea is great. :)18:44
SpamapSjevidl: kerberos has always made things *more* convenient when I've used it....18:44
jevidlTheInfinity: There's a bit of overhead on SCP since you have encryption/decryption operations happening in addition to just pushing bits around, but if there's a big difference between SMB and SCP then there's a good chance it's a smb setting that's slowing things down.18:45
jevidlSpamapS: So, in my situation we use a centrally managed KRB service. I am not sure I can get ticket sharing working, which if I am not mistaken would allow SSO on systems. Is that where you're going with KRB? I know it's possible, but currently we have to sign in to each system individually.18:46
SpamapSjevidl: thats basically the only reason to use kerberos, yes, SSO18:47
TheInfinityjevidl: doh. 200 KiB/s18:48
jevidlSpamapS: k. I will do some reading on that too. It may be an easier solution than what I'm looking at. I will say that our current setup, even without SSO, is easier than forcing each user to manage their password on every machine. :)18:48
TheInfinityjevidl: uh. okay. that seems to be a driver problem.18:48
jevidlTheInfinity: is that about what you were getting on SMB?18:48
TheInfinityjevidl: yea18:48
TheInfinitythats bad. because i dont have local access atm. -.-18:49
jevidlTheInfinity: ok, Yeah, it sounds like it's possibly a driver issue, it could be a kernel tuning issue (though this would suprrise me) or it could be an issue residing in your connection between you and the remote site18:49
SpamapSjevidl: are you sure it doesn't already work? try 'kinit' on your local machine, then ssh -v remote_machine and see if it uses the kerberos credentials18:49
TheInfinityjevidl: its a local network. i access there via ssh. all copies are made just inside the local network.18:50
jevidlSpamapS: I didn't think it did, though I'll try that :)18:50
jevidlTheInfinity: gotcha. Yeah, it might be a driver problem. Is the slowness limited to this machine, or do other machines with a similar configuration also have problems? if it's limited to this machine, it might be a bad cable or switch port, something like that18:51
TheInfinityjevidl: and i use -server default kernel18:51
TheInfinityjevidl: its the only server there. but i can try coping from one windows maschine to another, yea.18:52
jevidlTheInfinity: just something easy to check, and might save you some time18:52
jevidlSpamapS: I'll look at this more. There's a GSS failure when I try to connect, so it might be something that can be remedied.18:53
TheInfinityjevidl: huh! downloads just work with 200 KiB/s although its a 6000 mbit line Oo18:54

TheInfinityurgh18:56
TheInfinity6 mbit. sorry :)18:56
SpamapSjevidl: probably need service principals on the servers.18:56
TheInfinity6000 kbit18:56
TheInfinityrouter says its online @ 6 mbit, 5,5 mbit usable18:57
jevidlSpamapS: i'll keep that in mind. It's also quite possible that our config is out of date or misconfigured to allow that on the client side. I'll look at that side of things first, since it'll be easier work than trying to deal with the centralized IT to find out about the servers. Thanks for the suggestion though, this may save me some time.18:57

* slyboots needs a better understanding of the ubuntu boot process20:18
slybootsMy server fails to reboot correctly, but its not giving me anything helpful as to why20:19
slybootsIf I boot into recovery mode, it fails with "Unable to mount /" but as far as I can tell it works fine if I drop into recovery and enter teh command mount /dev/sda1 /20:19
jevidlslyboots: the first thing (and probably weak theory) that comes to mind is that fstab may have an error in it?20:23
jevidlslyboots: perhaps a messed up UUID for /dev/sda1?20:23
jevidl </shot in the dark>20:23
=== skrewler_ is now known as skrewler
slybootsjevidl: Nah I already checked that, its refercing the correct UUID for the disks20:27
jevidlslyboots: sorry. It was worth a try.20:27
jevidlslyboots: the only other thing I can think of is perhaps a module that's not being loaded during a normal boot, but that seems a bit far fetched.20:28
slybootsaye, Since recovery mode works OK and its the samel kernel20:28
jevidlslyboots: recovery fails until you manually mount it though, right? I wonder why that is20:30
slybootsNot sure, according to mtab its mounting a disk that.. doesnt exist20:30
slyboots"/dev/sdc5 mounted as / ext2"20:30
slybootsBut I dont have /dev/sdc5 :P20:31
jevidlslyboots: and no reference to sdc5 in fstab? I wonder where it's getting the idea that it should be using that20:34
slybootsNot a clue, /dev/sdc is part of a RAID array so there is no 5th partition on it20:35
slybootsBoth boot and / and mounted by their UUID's and the rest are part of a LVM20:35
jevidlso /dev/sda is your boot hdd, and sdb,sdc in an LVM configuration?20:40
slybootsWell b,c,d,e,f,g..20:44
slybootsBut yes, all the critical OS fiels are stored on /dev/sda20:44
jevidlsure20:45
jevidlGrub is installed on sda?20:48
slybootsYup20:49
RunegHas anyone experienced the log rotation error with MySQL on 10.04?20:49
jevidlslyboots: I'm sorry, I don't have a lot of other ideas. It sounds like the drivers for your hdd controller are loading fine, and it can already use the disk by the time it's booting. As long as UUID is right, and fstab is correct, it certainly seems like it should be able to boot. More longshots might include making sure that your disk partitions labels are correct. I'd almost be tempted to suggest udev/hal, but these aren't even loaded at the point 20:52
jevidlfailing20:52
slybootsmmm..20:52
slybootsbugger20:52
jevidlslyboots: sorry, I wish I had more ideas for you, but you've checked most of what I'd know to check.20:52
slybootsOk :) thanks anyway though20:53
jevidlyou might try asking about it in here later, there's plenty of people that are way better at this than I :)20:53
slybootsheh, okay20:53
jevidlbtw, Runeg , saw your question but have not run into that20:55
jevidlI probably should go check some SQL servers though...20:55
jevidlslyboots: gotta run, good luck sorting it out21:02

sorensmb: Did zul answer your question?21:44
sorensmb: If not, forget all about xen-3.3. 4.1 is where it's at these days.21:45
sorensmb: As for the only having an -amd64 flavour: That's because you're on 64-bit, so you have no use for the -i386 one, so it doesn't get built for amd64.21:46
sorensmb: The -amd64 one gets built on i386 as well, because that will let you run 64 bit domU even though your dom0 (which is where you'll install the hypervisor package) is i386.21:47
sorensmb: ...provided that you're actually on amd64 iron.21:47
