T3CHKOMMIEhello all!01:03
T3CHKOMMIEis anyone here?01:05
lullabudi'm here.  partly.01:07
T3CHKOMMIElullabud, thanks for responding.01:07
T3CHKOMMIEim testing some software and i was worried it was blocking me from IRC01:08
Lobo29Trying to install 8.04 on HP DL360 G3, flashes the ubuntu logo and then blank screen, any way to force other boot options ?01:08
lullabudLobo29: i've got 8 running on that machine, didn't have any trouble.  you sure your media works?  cdrom works fine?01:09
lullabudLobo29: one alternative would be to mount the ISO via the iLO card, if you have that option.01:10
lullabudalso you could try booting from a usb key.01:10
Lobo29lullabud, well, not 100% sure  about the cd, just made it, could try it on this laptop i guess01:10
lullabudLobo29: when in doubt, burn slower.01:11
T3CHKOMMIELobo29, is the cd a cd Rw?01:11
Lobo29i'm using cd-r01:11
lullabudwell, i have several DL360's and i've never had problems with any cdr i've thrown at them.01:12
malevfriends! I'm setting up an Ubuntu server to host 2 php websites wiht mysql. I have 512Mb of RAM. What do you thing I'm short with it or will work fine? I'm not planning to have many visits, 200 at most per day01:12
Lobo29i loaded 11.04 on this once, but it has issues on bootup, so i'm trying 8.0401:12
T3CHKOMMIELobo29, ok good, ive had like 100% failure booting off my crappy cheap RW's ive also downloaded a fair share of corrupted ISO's did you boot into disk check?01:12
T3CHKOMMIEmalev, id shoot for more ram.01:13
Lobo29t3chkommie; did not boot into check disk01:13
malevT3CHKOMMIE, what about 1Gb?01:13
lullabudLobo29: i wouldn't expect that, they're not exactly new machines, and ubuntu is good about getting hardware support for most hardware, so even if you don't have the same hw setup as mine i'd expect it to work.  are you sure it's not a hardware problem?01:13
lullabudmalev: if you're just running LAMP, no java or X, that might be fine.  more ram is always good.  just keep an eye on your memory and pages01:14
malevlullabud, no java or X, just LAMP. oks, thanks!!01:14
T3CHKOMMIEmalev, ive run the crap outa a webserver serving ampache and 5 websites, but its only a family site so not nearly 200 ppl/ aday. that machine had 2 gb and ran really smooth. 1gb i think would be safe aslong as you dont install a gui and keep the services to a minimal. ive never run ubuntuer server on less than 2 gb. but i know it can be done.01:14
Lobo29lullabud, well, this is my first server attempt and i'm somewhat noob at linux.  did more unix years ago.  tried 11.04 on Dell 1650, didn't work out either01:15
malevT3CHKOMMIE, thanks dude!!01:15
T3CHKOMMIEmalev, yw01:15
T3CHKOMMIE:)01:15
Lobo29i'm hoping i can make 8.04 work on this to make a clonezilla server i need desperately01:16
lullabudyeah?  i rather like 11.04, even as a desktop.  9 was a solid release too.01:16
Lobo2911.04  works very well overall on this latitude d51001:16
lullabudhaha, i've got it running on nearly the same laptop01:17
lullabudi'm really happy with the 11 gui.  first linux distro in years where the GUI didn't drive me crazy within minutes.01:17
Lobo29i've got 500 toshiba nb505 and 500  lenovo x120e i have to image with 11.0401:17
T3CHKOMMIEive got me a XBMC install running on an atom board also serving up zoneminder, ampache, apache2 with drupal all in an aquarium filled with mineral oil :) soooo quiet!01:18
lullabudholy hell dude01:18
lullabudpictures?01:18
* lullabud is diggin' the frisky radio selection this afternoon01:19
T3CHKOMMIEhttp://t3chkommie.com/?q=first_case_mod01:19
Lobo29T3chkommie must be speaking russian, didn't catch one word of that :P01:19
T3CHKOMMIEdoesnt get above 140 deg F. doesnt make a sound i run it 24/701:19
T3CHKOMMIElullabud, check out the above link. i only have one photo so far, but ive got tons more i just havnt uploaded yet.01:20
lullabuddamn, that is seriously awesome01:21
Lobo29Dude thats just crazy01:21
T3CHKOMMIElullabud,  thanks its my baby :)01:21
lullabuduse a tripod without the flash next time, long exposure.  it'll make the photo look better, show off the glow of the LED's on the motherboard and stuff.01:21
Lobo29i need to grab an ac strip01:21
T3CHKOMMIEeventually im going to rip out the rom and put in BD01:21
T3CHKOMMIElullabud, good idea, i took it with my HTC evo just before running to class. ive got some better ones at night, they are just really dark and kinda blurry.01:22
T3CHKOMMIEeverything is in that box, psu inlcuded! ive been running it since feb. so far so good :)01:22
T3CHKOMMIEi love ubuntu server! great stuff. suppoer is awsome and i love linux. unix, not so much. still having a hard time with some firewall oses. but i love my ubuntu server :)01:23
lullabudyeah man, ubuntu is pretty ƒ awesome01:24
lullabudbeen using it in production since 0501:24
T3CHKOMMIEnice01:24
T3CHKOMMIEim really digging the new natty ui too. but my heart still rests with cli.01:24
* lullabud concurs01:25
Lobo29ok guys, here's just another one of my quirks that has been happening01:26
Lobo29I have a dell monitor that works great, until finish install and then reboot, at os start i get "can't display this video mode" so01:26
Lobo29then i switch to my sony monitor, it sees past the  os start, but then the 11.04 has errors01:27
lullabudLobo29: i think you're talking to the wrong guys, two self professed CLI junkies.01:27
lullabudi, for one, know nearly nothing about configuring X.01:27
T3CHKOMMIELobo29,  are you isntalling 11.04 server?01:27
Lobo29so, now i'm back to my dell monitor and my 8.04 install is staring ok01:27
Lobo29t3chkommie, i wanted to, but had issues, so was trying 8.04, hoping it would go better01:28
lullabudLobo29: have you tried 9?01:29
T3CHKOMMIEi bet you have bad ram.01:29
lullabudor 10?01:29
lullabudthere's always the memtest option at boot...01:29
Lobo29i'm jumping from 11.04 to 8, cause reviews seemed to be good about 8 working with this hardware01:29
T3CHKOMMIEi had to pull a ram stick out of my box this morning cus it went band and everything would go great untill the os started loating... then BAM blurry screen freezes, lockups. spent about and hour thinking it was a bad onboard gpu... then i started to pull ram one by one. and found that bad one.01:30
Lobo29this was function fine as a windows server taken from our data center01:30
Lobo29it booted fine to windows this morning before i started the ubuntu install01:30
T3CHKOMMIEare you installing via wubi?01:30
Lobo29from ced01:31
Lobo29cd01:31
Lobo29reconfiged to raid 001:31
Lobo29is only change i made01:31
T3CHKOMMIEoh you got a raid card on that bad boy?01:32
lullabudit's a proliant rackmount01:32
Lobo29right01:32
Lobo29and the raid my be my issue also01:33
Lobo29altho, it doesn't explain my video issues01:33
lullabudLobo29: one thing i dislike about the proliant's is that you have to license the functions of their iLO, whereas with dell once you buy the DRAC you just get all the functions for free.01:33
lullabudi've used DRAC to load up the OS off an ISO mounted from another machine, but I went to do the same thing on HP and it was like "buy a license for iLO remote media!"01:34
lullabud$#!T licenses....01:34
T3CHKOMMIELobo29, ive only delt with powerEdge and home pcs, dont have any exprience with proliant, but i would redownload the iso and try installing it on a VM first, that way you can narrow it down to hardware or software.01:34
Lobo29well, i know what your talking about, altho its a bit over my head01:34
Lobo29t3chkommie, i have a dell pe 1650, that had issues with the 11.0401:35
T3CHKOMMIEreally?01:36
T3CHKOMMIEoh, i guess everything i was running on my pe was ontop ot ESXi so maybe thats why? thats strange man, are you comfortable with the VM thing? i can probbaly walk you through it if you got the time.01:37
lullabudLobo29: with dell, you just drop the ISO on another machine, run racvmcli -r dracIP -u user -p password -c ./media.iso01:37
Lobo29t3chkommie,  i don't have any vm software atm01:37
lullabudthen power on the dell and it boots over the network from the ISO as if it were a cd in the drive.01:37
Lobo29what are some options i can get for vmware ?01:37
T3CHKOMMIEvirtual box ;) free fast, and a great way to do some testing. i use it ALL the time.01:37
lullabudreally ƒ sweet.  you can do the same thing with HP, but you have to pay. =/01:37
lullabudLobo29: esxi is free01:38
T3CHKOMMIEesxi rocks!!!!!01:38
lullabudkvm on linux.01:38
T3CHKOMMIEXenServer (citrix_01:38
lullabudcheck out eucalyptus, it's integrated with ubuntu.01:38
T3CHKOMMIEvirt-manager01:39
T3CHKOMMIEi head thats pretty nice... kinda like VB but cli. i was thinking about using that next week.01:39
lullabudT3CHKOMMIE: there are gui tools to interface with it01:39
lullabudsomething like eucalyptus would be better in this situation because in order to admin ESXi, you need windows.  le suck.01:40
Lobo29K, i'll check those things out, TY01:40
patdk-lapyou don't need windows :)01:40
patdk-lapbut windows makes it so you don't need command line01:40
lullabudpatdk-lap: well, you can't get a virtual console to mount local media to do an OS install from the CLI.01:40
Lobo29and i'm sucko at cli01:41
Lobo29working on it01:41
patdk-laplullabud, ya, no console01:41
patdk-lapand if you use vcenter, it's worse01:41
lullabudman, i was looking at how solaris zones work in conjunction with zfs snapshots.  that shizz is sliiiiick01:42
lullabud...not that i'm a solaris fan, but i love me some zfs.01:42
lullabudand zones is an interesting way to "virtualize"... if it's even considered that.01:42
T3CHKOMMIEapparently freebsd flavors have integreated zfs01:44
T3CHKOMMIEso no more open solaris ;)01:44
lullabudyeah man, shizz is hot01:44
lullabudthey're catching up to solaris quickly too.01:45
lullabudanxiously awaiting freebsd901:45
lullabudthe zfs in 8 doesn't support de-dupe, but 9 will01:45
T3CHKOMMIEhu, good to know, im still not all that great with freeBSD. its a bit different that Ubunter Server.01:46
lullabudzfs is incredibly memory hungry though, mostly good for a dedicated fileserving box, or a box with limited other roles.  sun recommends 1gb ram per 1tb disk.01:47
lullabudT3CHKOMMIE: check out freenas, it runs on freebsd8 off a usb stick and turns a system into a zfs server.01:47
lullabudweb-based interface.  cli is available but not recommended.01:48
T3CHKOMMIElullabud, ya i was reading about that last night, im trying to get into freeBSD more so im looing at all the neat stuff out there. i got a nass at home running freebsd just not sure what flavor... its a anchient intel nas from tiger direct (barf)01:48
lullabudsupports auto snapshots, hot-adding disks to the raid, smb, nfs, afp01:48
lullabudhuh01:48
lullabudhack it!01:48
T3CHKOMMIEoh man i love hot swapping me some drives!01:48
T3CHKOMMIElullabud,  already looked into it ;) not really worth it now. hardware is only sata 1.5 compliant so write speeds in a RAID-5 are attocious!01:49
lullabudT3CHKOMMIE: the swapping is still rough in freenas, unfortunately.  you can remove a drive, but getting a replacement back in its place is tough.  i was testing that out two weeks ago and had success, but a rough time.01:49
lullabudmeh.  oh well.01:49
T3CHKOMMIEoh bummer.01:50
T3CHKOMMIEi guess thats what raid cards are for hu?01:50
lullabudhonestly, software raid is pretty good in sata.01:50
lullabudfor instance, zfs raid mirroring allows you to get increased read speed by reading from both disks01:51
lullabudso you get the read speed of a stripe, but the write speed of a mirror.01:51
T3CHKOMMIEoh man i had a soft raid on a 6 ht 1 tb raid 5 tank on me... absolute night mare to try to rebuild!01:51
lullabudsee? that's the other big bullshit01:51
lullabudrepairing raid is such a pain in the ass01:52
T3CHKOMMIEoh yeah.01:52
lullabudi'd rather forget the individual hardware configs for different raid cards and have one familiar CLI to do repairs from.  <3 ZFS01:52
lullabudraid cards are great for when you have 100 of the same exact machine, but for small IT shops with cobbled hardware, what a nightmare.01:52
T3CHKOMMIEi was rebuilding the array cus a member failed... (soft intel raid) second hdd "failed" but didnt really... the HOLE raid was degreaded and i was trying to recover 1tb of data from it cus the DB that i replaced wasnt backing up anything important for our "backup solution" longest 4 days and 4 nights w/o sleep  in my life!01:53
lullabudoh man, that sucks.01:53
T3CHKOMMIEya it did.01:53
lullabudthat'll make you invest in a full-system backup solution.01:53
T3CHKOMMIEand EVERYONE in the company was asking " when do we get email back..." like every 10 minutes... its like.... i havnt slept in 4 days! leave me alone!!!!!01:54
T3CHKOMMIEnever left the server closet man.....01:54
lullabudugh01:54
lullabudi had a situation not as bad as that... 24 hours in a data center.01:54
T3CHKOMMIEoh yeah they were crap and they were so cheap i had to bend over backwards and kiss alota ass to get my replacement pe2790.... it was only $3000!!!!01:55
lullabudshortly afterwards my team was decimated and i was the last man standing...01:55
lullabudand shortly after that i was on a two month vacation to asia with no job. :)01:55
T3CHKOMMIEoh man dude, nightmares!01:55
T3CHKOMMIEah, asia is nice :)01:55
lullabudi said "screw this!" and quit, hahaha01:55
T3CHKOMMIEyup as soon as i got their dell up and running i GTFO'ed01:55
lullabudT3CHKOMMIE: man, yeah...01:55
lullabudif your boss doesn't get your back in the disaster scenarios, you gotta get your own back.01:56
T3CHKOMMIEwasnt worth it trying to keep their sinking servers alive... i was the only IT guy and the stress was killing me.01:56
lullabudyup.  been there.01:56
lullabudi worry that i might be there right now, haha01:56
lullabudkeeping a watchful eye...01:56
T3CHKOMMIEyup, he was being a uber douche. kept calling in  "friends" that had no diea what was going on "o0h ya your raid tanked cus you got a virus in your bios"... wHAat?!01:56
T3CHKOMMIElol01:57
lullabudlol01:57
T3CHKOMMIEstupid guy... they paid him like $200 / hour to tell me my bios had a virus01:57
lullabudno, the real problem, probably, was that your BLT drive went AWOL.01:57
T3CHKOMMIEi cant be around that much stupidity.... it just drains you.01:57
T3CHKOMMIElol01:58
Lobo29Ok, got the 8.04 to finish, *crosses fingers*01:59
T3CHKOMMIEthat was a nightmare, i was also going to school part time. missed all of my classes because they wouldnt let me leave at a time we agreed i could leave to attend class...01:59
T3CHKOMMIELobo29, good luck!01:59
* T3CHKOMMIE crossing fingers.01:59
lullabudyeah, shit like that sucks.02:00
T3CHKOMMIEfaild classes, couldnt get tuition rembused.... waste of time and money.. :( wont ever do that again. good learning experience tho.02:00
T3CHKOMMIEgot to play with some hardware i couldnt buy myself ;)02:00
lullabudi try to live my life like i won't have a job tomorrow, either because i got laid off, or because i got pissed off.  either way, you have to look out for yourself, and the tech field can be pretty vicious.02:00
Lobo29omg, i got a "clonezilla1 login: "02:00
T3CHKOMMIEsweet!02:00
Lobo29hmmm02:00
T3CHKOMMIEwhat is this clonezilla i hear of?02:00
T3CHKOMMIEsounds like server farm stuff?02:01
lullabudT3CHKOMMIE: it's a disk cloning tool02:01
Lobo29yes02:01
T3CHKOMMIEoh yeah... clonsezilla... duh.02:01
lullabudreally useful when you need it.  it can clone over the network, disk-to-disk, disk-to-image02:01
lullabudit'll even do multi-cast imaging.  i've never needed that feature, but it sure sounds awesome!02:01
T3CHKOMMIEkinda like norton ghost.02:01
lullabudT3CHKOMMIE: exactly.02:02
T3CHKOMMIEoh man free stuff?02:02
lullabudit's the FOSS norton ghost02:02
Lobo29gonna try to use it to clone those 1100  notebooks i got02:02
Lobo29or no kiddies are gonna  have internet access when school starts up again02:02
T3CHKOMMIEis it an ubuntu live os? whats it based on?02:02
Lobo29works on any linux os02:02
lullabudLobo29: lol, when you said 1100 i thought that was a model number02:02
lullabudhaha02:02
T3CHKOMMIELobo29, awsome! what do you guys used for firewall?02:02
T3CHKOMMIEme too lullabud02:03
Lobo29m86 for  firewall02:03
lullabudT3CHKOMMIE: see for yourself - http://clonezilla.org/02:03
Lobo29we had a citrix farm, we just shut it down after 10 years02:03
lullabudi used it the other day to p2v a server that didn't have X02:03
virusuyClonezilla Rulzzzzz02:03
T3CHKOMMIEah Lobo29 ive been trying out pfsense. its pretty awsome. but i dont have any expreience with m86 to compari it to.02:03
virusuyanyone used Endian as firewall ?02:04
virusuynot even compare to PFsense, but it's okay for small and medium office02:04
Lobo29T3chkommie, i'm sorry, m86 is filter,  we have watchguard for  firewall02:04
T3CHKOMMIEnever heard of endian accept for the memory notion.02:04
Lobo29and baracuda spam filter02:05
T3CHKOMMIELobo29, ah, right on. how many nodes are your network over there? you guys an "enterprise" or more medium buisness?02:05
T3CHKOMMIELobo29, ah baracuda ive heard good things about those.02:05
Lobo29school domain02:05
virusuyT3CHKOMMIE: google it, it's an italian FW...02:05
Lobo292500 kids02:05
lullabudbarracuda is nice, especially when integrated with exchange so spam scoring is done as a group rather than individually.02:06
Lobo297 campus,  fiber links to each, near 2000 devices02:06
T3CHKOMMIELobo29, thats a fair ammount of users. you guys use AD or RADIUS? how do you manage all them kids?02:06
Lobo29AD02:06
T3CHKOMMIEah, ya thats alot of users to manage.02:06
Lobo29but, cutting back on that now02:06
lullabudyou know, AD is pretty rad.02:06
lullabudi really wish that MS had some better management tools though...02:07
Lobo29M86 filter makes user log in at internet access, and kids will use google apps and other "cloud" resources from now on02:07
T3CHKOMMIEwell gents, its been fun geekin out. the mrs will be home soon from grocery shopping and ill have to give her my undivided attention. Lobo29  good luck with the cloneing and lullabud nice chattin in up with ya! ill be talking to you all later!02:08
Lobo29so kids won't even be in the domain any more02:08
Lobo29T3chkommie, lullabud,  Thanks much for your help, i also gotta cut out for dinner now,  L8R02:08
T3CHKOMMIEsounds like a plan. later!02:09
lullabudi guess i should head off too02:09
lullabudgood luck with the HP load Lobo2902:09
Lobo29quit02:10
Logos01Hello...  Anyone willing to help me figure out why I can't install VMs on a default 11.04 server instance?  Using the default virtualization package selected during install.03:28
Logos01http://pastebin.com/NBj25Qa003:28
luiteLogos01: have you added your user account to the libvirtd group?03:38
Logos01Is that necessary for root?03:39
luiteoh then it shouldn't be necessary03:39
luitebut maybe the scripts are made to be run as a regular user (in the libvirtd group)?03:40
luiteLogos01: you're sure that libvirt-bin is installed in libvirtd is running?03:42
Logos01Yup.03:42
Logos01I'm using virt-manager.03:42
Logos01Just tried adding my default user to the libvirtd and kvm groups... running virt-manager as my default user.03:45
Logos01No dice.03:45
luitehmm, it wants to create and bind a socket there. maybe check mount options for the /var filesystem, or have you installed some extra security things like selinux? check /var/log/kern.log for messages03:49
Logos01...03:49
Logos01I did symlink the /var/lib/libvirt/images directory to a NAS mount.03:49
=== ujjain is now known as ujjain|afk
luiteoh but that's a different dir03:50
julian_cIs there anything in AppArmor that might need adjustment...?03:50
julian_c(re: libvirt)03:51
luitehow can you temporarily dissable apparmor by the way, but still log messages? (like enforcing=0 for selinux)03:53
Logos01Looks like it is an apparmor thing.03:55
Logos01And lookit that, apparmor_status reports /usr/sbin/libvirtd is in "enforce" mode.03:56
Logos01Disabled the libvirt apparmor profiles and it's still giving the same error.04:08
Logos01So it's something else.04:08
Logos01... deleted and re-created virbr0 using virt-manager, and am now installing a VM. Don't know why that would cause the issue, but... hey.04:49

superfrogger79im setting up an ubuntu server which ive connected to my pc with a crossover cable. i did a fresh install and selected the LAMP and SSH options at install...16:07
superfrogger79... and now i cant seem to ssh into there at all...16:07
superfrogger79ive got the right ip and i can see the servers running fine, but i keep on getting connection refused in putty16:08

Pr0zoidPPTP VPN Server - Hey guys i'm trying to run a pptp vpn server but i need something with a little more of a user management engine ... (plain text passwords in txt files just isn't all that secure)... anyoen have any suggestions of something else i could use?  (it would be great if it stored user data in a DB like mysql).18:38
IdleOneTECHX: You are not in a democracy here. Help is given on a volunteer basis, your bad attitude and lack of detail makes it so those of us who can help probably wont. So get off your high horse cause nobody here owes you anything.18:40
IdleOnein fact you owe us an apology18:40
TECHXHAHAHAHA18:40
TECHXJog on18:40
stgraberPr0zoid: hmm, I really haven't played with that in a long long time but you may want to look into freeradius for the authentication part. I seem to remember there's a way of having the pptp vpn server use that for authentication.18:42
stgraberPr0zoid: then freeradius supports pam auth, mysql, ldap, ... pretty much anything you may want18:42
