edogaaXubuntu support chanel was?08:10
edogaawell okay, if I want to trouble shoot why my brothers PC with xubuntu keeps freezing and the keyboard is incapable of responding what should I do?08:12
psycho_oreosit might be a hardware issue, I'd check if the RAM is faulty and then maybe check other potential sources. I'm presuming with keyboard unable to respond, it is a hardware lock, which could mean numerous things including PSU at fault08:18
edogaai see08:19
edogaaso memtest, hdd test and stuffl ike that08:19
edogaai can ssh into it08:19
edogaais there anything i should do during the process?08:19
Unit193SSH in sounds kinda like the issue I have been working with...08:20
Sysiafter it's frosen, see dmesg and ~/.xsession-errors and stuff in /var/log/08:20
edogaaah kk08:20
Sysiwhat graphics btw?08:21
edogaai'll just wait for it to freeze then :/08:21

edogaawhat does it mean when the system is frozen but i can't ssh into it17:01
Sysido you mean you can ssh?17:02
Sysiif it's just totally frozen.. kernel panic or something other nasty17:03
edogaaNo, I mean I can't :/17:04
edogaatrying t ssh into it right now but i can't17:04
edogaa:/ how do i know whats wrong with it if its this frozen lol17:12
Sysii wonder what logs are stored after reboot17:13
charlie-tcaTry both num-lock and caps-lock to see if either light will work. Do the keyboard lights blink at you? If num-lock and caps lock work to show a light, it is maxing out the cpu or memoyr17:14
edogaaokay :/ i guess i'm going to have to hard reboot it17:14
edogaano17:15
edogaano light fro meither one17:15
charlie-tcahard reboot, check /var/crash for any report, then check /var/log/syslog.017:16
edogaai found a syslog.1 but not 017:29
charlie-tcaanything in .1?17:29
edogaaa lot of text i'm going t look at for anything suspicious17:29
edogaadon't know i'm going to pastebin it17:33
charlie-tcasearch for error or fail17:34
charlie-tcaor pastebin and I will look17:34
edogaashould i get normal syslog too? :P17:39
edogaathere are two of them17:39
charlie-tcanope17:40
charlie-tcanormal syslog should be for the last boot17:40
edogaahttp://pastebin.com/2nVGvUS817:43
edogaathere is also fail log and a couple dmesg ones, I wonderif there is anything in those :/17:43
charlie-tcalooking at it17:44
charlie-tcadmesg might have something, one back from the current again.17:44
edogaahuh17:44
edogaaOne back? like dmesg.0? Actually how do these logs work. :/ Are numbered ones from the last time it was 'up' or what?  lol17:45
charlie-tcayeah17:46
charlie-tcaNormally the one without a number is the latest one, generated either during the last boot or the current session17:47
edogaaah17:47
edogaawhy are dmesg 1-4 in a gz archive?17:47
charlie-tcaThe lowest number should be the previous to that, and they go back in sequence17:47
charlie-tcaThe biggest number is the farthest back17:47
charlie-tcaIt saves 5 previous logs, and rotates them17:48
charlie-tcaso, next time, dmesg.4.gz will delete, demesg.3.gz will be renamed to .4, etc17:48
edogaaah17:48
charlie-tcalines 66 to 75 of the pastebin show shutdown hanging17:52
charlie-tcaLooks like a cron jobs were running, then it hung17:52
charlie-tcais there a kernel log, too? look in it and search for kerneloops17:53
edogaakernlog?17:53
charlie-tcaIf there is one, the kernel caused the hang17:53
charlie-tcayes17:53
edogaai'll pastebin kern.log.1 then :/17:54
charlie-tcanm17:54
charlie-tcathis caused it17:54
charlie-tcaJun 12 02:31:43 haykel-desktop AptDaemon: INFO: Initializing daemon17:54
edogaahuh17:54
charlie-tcaAptDaemon never was able to shutdown17:54
edogaaWhat does this mean?17:54
charlie-tcaThat's what all those shutdown lines are for17:55
charlie-tca!aptdaemon17:55
charlie-tca!info aptdaemon17:55
ubottuaptdaemon (source: aptdaemon): transaction based package management service. In component main, is extra. Version 0.41+bzr646-0ubuntu2 (natty), package size 15 kB, installed size 176 kB17:55
charlie-tcaI think it might have to do with update-manager17:55
charlie-tcaIf you were not trying to add/remove anything, it was update-manager17:57
charlie-tcaIt caused the cpu to go 100% and lock up17:57
edogaaAh17:57
edogaaSo how do I disable the update-manager :/17:57
charlie-tcaUsually that is a bad idea, since you wouldn't know if anything needed to be updated then17:58
charlie-tcaIf it does it again, file a bug using      ubuntu-bug update-manager17:58
charlie-tcaand attach the /var/log/syslog.1 to it17:59
charlie-tcaIt might be a one time glitch in the app17:59
edogaa:/ its locked up a lot.17:59
charlie-tcafile it then17:59
edogaaIf I leave it alone for a period of time. Okay then18:00
charlie-tcaapt-daemon should not be locking it up like that18:00
charlie-tcabut all those lines about it trying to shutdown are saying it can't, for whatever reason. It will then cause the freeze to happen18:01

etharooniHey people!  I can't log in!  After changing window styles, It kicked me off.23:19
etharooniis there a way of changing the window style from the command line?23:19
etharooniCrap.  And Irssi isn't letting me change between windows from this recovery console thing.23:20
charlie-tcaYou are in recovery mode?23:20
etharooniIn the recovery console.23:21
charlie-tcait will remove all custom configurations, but the easiest way is  cd to your home, instead of root home23:21
charlie-tcaThen remove .config and .cache and restart23:21
etharooniAlright.  Here goes.23:22
charlie-tcaThen never try wildbush theme again23:22
etharoonirestarting.23:22
etharooniIt works!23:24
etharooniThanks!23:25
charlie-tcaYou are welcome23:25
charlie-tcaThe theme that does that to you is in Window Manager, Wildbush23:25
etharooniGot it.  Why is that in there?23:26
charlie-tcaIt is a really nice theme for those that don't lock up23:26
etharooniInteresting.  Wonder why that is.23:26
charlie-tcaand it is supplied by Xfce themselves, which is used in a lot of distros besides Xubuntu.23:26

etharooniWell, it seems that my audio doesn't work after getting rid of the .cache and .config.23:46
etharooniIt would have been smart to back stuff up.23:46
charlie-tcaclick the speaker in the top panel, unmute the thing23:46
charlie-tcaYou may have to select some controls in it, too23:47
etharooniIt looks unmuted.23:47
charlie-tcagot controls in it?23:47
etharooniWell, I added them again.23:48
charlie-tcadid you add both alsa and pulse audio control?23:48
etharooniAll I did was "select controls..."23:49
charlie-tcaafter selecting them, look at the line above that says "sound card. Switch it to the pulse audio card, and add a master control for it23:50
etharoonialright.23:50
charlie-tcaall you need is the playback control23:50
etharooniIt says it's on full blast.23:51
charlie-tcaclose the select controls thing, right click the speaker, and select pulse audio23:52
charlie-tcawell, right-click the speaker, select properties, select pulse audio23:53
etharoonihmm...23:53
etharooniDon't really see what you mean.23:53
charlie-tcaWhen you right click, left click properties23:54
etharooniThe only control for playback is "Master:23:54
etharoonicharlie-tca: Heh.  Well.23:54
charlie-tcathe mixer track, pick the sound card above it23:54
charlie-tcaPlayback: internal... (pulseaudiomixer)?23:54
charlie-tcaI ain't very good at sound. I am very good with the login thing23:55
etharooniYeah.  Just a master control.  What am I right clicking on?23:55
charlie-tcaright-click the speaker again. left-click brings up "select controls". after right-clicking, you should have properties23:56
etharooniOh.  That.  I'm a little slow.23:57
