blue379hi02:30
blue379I have recently got a machine that I want to put ubuntustudio on, and this will be my first attempt, but I've read lots on it, and I have two (hopefully simple) questions that I have not found yet02:32
blue379the first, when I went to download, it looks like there is ONLY the alternate distribution DVD image available (on all versions);  is that the one we are supposed to use, or is there somewhere else I should download?02:33
blue3792nd:  any idea if vmware running the old windows XP will be ok, and allow usb devices to work inside the vm?02:34
* blue379 serves coffee, juice, etc while he waits, and offers thanx in advance :)02:35
pietro10Hi. I installed Ubuntu Studio by installing ubuntustudio-desktop from within Ubuntu 11.04, and now Firefox will not let me drag images to the Desktop. What's going on?02:59
holsteinhey pietro1003:16
holsteinpietro10: im assuming what you really wanted was the studio applications03:17
holsteinnot the studio 'look and feel'03:17
holsteini would give a read to03:17
holstein!vanilla03:17
ubottuTo install Ubuntu Studio on top of a vanilla Ubuntu install, read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudio/Installation03:17
holsteinand just open synaptic or whatever and search ubuntustudio03:17
holsteini didnt realize you could drag images to the desktop03:18
pietro10yeah; I was intending on trying it out (and planning to move to US 11.10); I originally got Linux to test my music programs there as well as on windows/mac03:18
pietro10eh03:18
holsteini know the way i do it is right-click and save-as on the desktop03:18
holsteinthat'll work*03:18
pietro10so if I remove ubuntustudio-desktop I should go back to the old configuration?03:18
holsteinOR, you can just go back to the normal ubuntu-desktop03:18
holsteinpietro10: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop03:18
holstein^^ look at the output03:18
pietro10oh ok03:19
holsteinsee if ubuntustudio-desktop is going to be removed03:19
holstein*make sure it is03:19
holsteinpietro10: we will be in XFCE on 11.1003:19
pietro10yeah03:19
pietro10(which is why I said I was going to wait for 11.10)03:20
pietro10meh03:20
pietro10anyway the apt-get line tells me already installed03:20
pietro10should I just remove ubuntustudio-desktop?03:20
holsteinpietro10: when you sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop, you should see ubuntustudio-desktop being offered as removed03:21
holsteinif not, let me know03:21
holsteinif you want, go grab the xubuntu alpha for 11.10, and add the studio meta-packages :)03:21
pietro10no it's quitting, saying "ubuntu-desktop already latest version"03:21
holsteinOH03:22
holsteinpietro10: you can probabaly just log out and choose it in the session manager then03:22
pietro10ok03:22
pietro10eh, that didn't come up as an option so I just removed ubuntustudio-desktop and now it works03:26
pietro10thanks anyway03:26

holsteinblue977: o/05:02
blue977I finally saved enough to build a machine for ubuntustudio; and I read lots, (this is my first attempt) but I got two questions I could not find answers to05:34
blue977first, when I went to get the dvd .iso - all I see is alternate distributions, (same for every version), is there somewhere else I should be lookin?05:35
blue977second, any idea if I can use vmware to run a windows XP with usb devices on the inside?05:36
* blue977 serves coffee, juice, etc to everyone05:37
holsteinblue977: we only have the one installer right now05:39
holsteinthe bigger than a CD sized alternate installer05:40
holsteincheck out..05:40
holstein!vanilla05:40
ubottuTo install Ubuntu Studio on top of a vanilla Ubuntu install, read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudio/Installation05:40
holsteinif you want, you can install normal ubuntu from the normal live desktop CD05:40
holstein*i suggest checking out *some* live distro first05:40
blue977ok; I just though I was missing something and didn't want to download the wrong one05:40
holsteinnah, thats it :)05:41
holsteinVbox doesnt care where the guest OS's hard drive is05:41
holsteinyou might though05:41
holsteinif the USB performances it not up to speed05:41
blue977is vbox like vmware? for vm's?05:41
holsteinAH05:42
holsteinyeah, VMware *should* be the same05:42
blue977I was going to put ubuntu inside windows cause I had that, but windows wont let usb work inside vm's05:42
holsteinAFAIK, virtual box doesnt care05:43
holsteineven on windows05:43
holsteinbut, i havent been in windows in a while05:43
blue977kewl :)05:43
holsteinand i never wanted a guest on a USB drive05:43
holsteinblue977: you dont want ubuntustudio virtualized anyways05:43
holsteini mean, you can05:43
holsteinbut you wont be able to use 'the goods'05:43
holsteinreally depends on what you are doing05:44
blue977oh05:44
blue977for starters I got to learn everything first05:44
holsteinwell, it wont take you long to learn that05:45
holsteinassuming you are wanting to use JACK, and do audio production05:45
holsteinif you are doing graphics, you might get away with it05:45
holsteinyou could do video editing too probably05:45
holsteinjust brutally slow05:45
holsteinyou want to do it the other way anyways05:45
holsteinyou want windows virtualized05:46
blue977this is going to be the first machine I got for me and I'm so excited05:46
holsteinyou can save 'snaptshots' of guest OS's05:46
holsteinunless you use windows more like an appliance, and dont get online with it05:48
blue977been saving up since november; I got the cheapest intel quad, 4 gb mem, a new motherboard, an old nvidia pcie 256 video card, and a dvd-rw, and a 500 gb western digital caviar blue05:50
blue977and there is space for 4 more gb of ran too05:50
blue977and a FREE 22" old vga monitor cause someone got a flat one and he didnt want this one05:51
holsteinnice05:52
holsteini got a dual core finally05:52
holsteingot it for recovering some data05:53
holsteinthat and a laptop of similar specs05:53
blue977mine is a desktop05:53
blue977old case but I got a new power supply with red green yellow and blue lights05:54
blue977and the fan has blue lights05:54
holsteinright... i got a decent desktop machine and a laptop for that job05:54
blue977why is the video slow?05:55
blue977will it be too slow to record a vcr to make it for a dvd and edit out the commercials?05:55
holsteinwhat video?05:56
holsteindepends on the capture card i guess05:56
holsteinwhat capture rig did you get?05:56
blue977you said the video editing was brutally slow05:56
holsteini said it *would* be05:57
holsteinin VM or Vbox05:57
blue977oh05:57
holsteinrendering would be slower than necessary05:57
blue977but if ubuntu is the main os then its ok05:57
holsteinok?05:57
holsteini mean, its not magic05:58
holsteinyou can still break things ;)05:58
holsteini personally dont do media editing in general in virtual machines05:58
holsteinim sure its do-able though05:58
blue977I will try to put it on as the main os and make windows inside05:59
holsteinwhat graphics card did you go with?06:00
holsteinO I C06:00
holsteinnvidia06:00
holsteini got a dual head nvidia recently06:00
holsteinat the charity shop06:00
holsteinworks pretty well06:00
blue977its a nvidia 256 mb pci-e with 2 ports so I can have use a old vga monitor for the 2nd one too - lots of those free06:01
blue977I think it is 6400 or 6800 or something like that06:01
blue977not a good idea to turn on the light to see, cause my mom is not asleep06:02

blue977I really want to try to make a full length animated video with awesome music too, and make a zillion dollars cause that would be really amazing06:04
holsteinhey, it could happen :)06:06
blue977on 500 gb drive if I keep 100 gb for the vm for windows, should I make the rest in one partition or split it for programs and data separate?06:06
holsteinwhatever you want06:06
holsteini just do buntu in one big partition06:07
holsteinbut, the seperate /home is usually considered more 'pro'06:07
blue977ok06:07
blue977I'm so excited :)06:08
blue977thanx so much!  I am going to download that now, and as soon as exams are over I will get busy on it06:10
holsteincool06:12
holsteinblue977: welcome to the channel :)06:12
blue977:)06:17
blue977I'm going to bed before I get my butt kicked; thanks again06:22
