GSF1200SIm sure this has been asked many times, but whats the best way to resolve the 30-second initial startup of Thunar (and subsequent dupe window popping up 10 seconds later). I understand its related to network shares (which I dont use)/gvfs. I have tried changing the name of gdu-monitor to gdu-monitor.foo, and I just lost a long protracted battle trying to install the latest thunar from git00:23
charlie-tcaGSF1200S: the best way to prevent the duplicate window popping up is quit hit thunar twice. It does take a while, as you have surmised00:55
GSF1200Scharlie-tca: on 64bit it actually opens twice even if you only click once (this is known on bug reports). This problem has been fixed in the git release of thunar, but I cant get the configure script to get past looking for exo-1 even though its installed.01:02
Heidthello02:48
HeidtI'm having big problems with Xubuntu, LiveCD worked fine, after installation screen is black. I cannot access recovery mode either, when pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 Nothing happens, when i used a boot code it gave me an error stating: Kernel is not loaded02:49
Heidtcan someone help me please? Thank you.02:49
HeidtSigh no one? :C02:52
cody-somervilledoh02:57
cody-somervilleah02:57
cody-somervilleHeidt, Try removing quiet from the boot options02:57
Heidt oh thanks finally some help D:02:58
Heidtso I use E then remove quiet?02:58
cody-somervilleyea, and remove splash too02:58
Heidtwould it be too much to ask just to stay here and confirm if this is the problem? XD02:59
Heidtive been comming back constantly for support with other channels02:59
cody-somervilleHeidt, I'll be around for a little while, yea. Just say my name if you need to get my attention.02:59
HeidtThank you very much.02:59
Heidtbe back soon then02:59
HeidtAh damn I forgot then ame of the person who was helping me before03:13
HeidtGrr.03:13
antsOk, the top panel for the default theme, it sticks out like a sore thumb. Am I able to change the colour so it matches the window borders?03:13
bazhangHeidt, cody-somerville03:14
HeidtThanks A LOT03:14
cody-somervilleHeidt, hi. :)03:14
HeidtYeah it doesn't work Cody D:03:14
HeidtI still get that black screen03:14
Heidtbut this error really gives me the creeps: No loaded kernel03:14
Heidtit gave me this when i edited a boot option a while ago with another member03:14
HeidtI'm really lost and confused Q_Q03:15
cody-somervilleHeidt, Edits made at the grub prompt aren't saved. You probably accidentally changed something incorrectly.03:16
cody-somervilleHeidt, Interesting that removing splash and quiet doesn't show you anything but a black screen though.03:16
cody-somervilleHeidt, Are there any words or graphics displayed at all after booting?03:17
Heidtnope03:17
Heidtany ideas?03:20
cody-somervilleHeidt, What version of Xubuntu did you install?03:26
Heidt11.0403:26
GSF1200SHeidt: how many drives do you have on the computer?03:30
cody-somervilleHeidt, Did this start immediately following installation? Or did you do anything like install nvidia drivers?03:30
HeidtGSF no idea03:31
HeidtCody right after installation, worked fine in LiveCD though03:31
cody-somervilleHeidt, Have you tried installing a second time to see if that fixes it?03:32
HeidtGST most of my drivers are updated though03:32
HeidtCody No I have not03:32
HeidtHow would I do that?03:32
HeidtI cant even access recovery console03:32
cody-somervilleHeidt, Just boot the livecd again and go through the install process.03:33
GSF1200SHeidt: is it a laptop or a desktop? The reason I ask is, if you have multiple storage devices (even usb devices) that were attached when you installed, the / could have been /dev/sda or /dev/sdb or whatever. If the drive order changes, initramfs will try to load the kernel (initramfs is installed on the mbr as I understand), but fail because its looking in the wrong place. Ive had this happen to me03:33
cody-somervilleGSF1200S, That'll present an error message usually.03:33
Heidtit's a laptop03:34
Heidtbut i had nothing connected in USB03:34
Heidti only have 2 slots XD03:34
GSF1200Scody-somerville, yeah, usually drop to a maintenance shell and say cannot find root filesystem- I wasnt sure if ubu did the same thing (i had such an issue with Arch)03:34
GSF1200SHeidt- yeah, then I doubt that what I mentioned is your issue.03:34
cody-somervilleHeidt, Before reinstalling, you might try adding the following to boot options: nomodeset video=vesa:off gfxpayload=text03:37
Heidtnomodeset is an invl03:38
Heidtinvalid command*03:38
Heidtin xubuntu03:38
Heidtcommand line03:38
Heidtidk why03:38
Heidtil ry the rest though03:38
Heidttry*03:38
cody-somervilleIts not something you execute on the command line03:38
Heidthow wud i do it then?03:38
cody-somervillepress E like you did at the grub prompt before03:39
GSF1200Syou append it to the grub boot line03:39
GSF1200Syeah, E03:39
Heidtthats what i did03:40
Heidtit said invalid command :S03:40
Heidti tried nomodeset and03:40
Heidt--nomodeset03:40
cody-somervillesounds like you're trying to enter that as a command to grub instead after you start editing the menu entry03:41
charlie-tcareplace quiet splash with nomodeset ?03:42
HeidtI press E and input nomodeset in the grub command line (by pressing c at os selection)03:42
cody-somervilleHeidt, press 'e'03:43
cody-somervilledon't press c03:43
cody-somervillec takes you to grub command line03:43
Heidto sry i meant e03:43
HeidtXD03:43
Heidti did do c03:43
Heidti did both03:43
cody-somervillejust do e, make your change, then press CTRL+x to boot with your changes03:44
Heidti did it's an invalid command according to my thing03:44
Heidtdo i have t oinsert in a specific location?03:44
cody-somervilleHeidt, after pressing e, you should see something like this: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=grub2.menu.edit.png03:45
cody-somervilleHeidt, use the keyboard to position the cursor, delete quiet and splash then type in nomodeset video=vesa:off gfxpayload=text03:46
cody-somervilleHeidt, once you've done that, press the CTRL key and the letter x at the same time to boot03:46
cody-somervilleDo not use ENTER to move between lines.03:47
Heidtso i replace queit splash with nomodeset video=vesa:off gfxpayload=text?03:47
cody-somervilleyup03:47
Heidtthanks guys03:48
Heidtim gonna have to try this in a hour or so though03:48
Heidtwould you mind going over how to do an reinstall though?03:48
cody-somervilleHeidt, just boot the live cd like before and perform the installation like normal03:49
Heidtah thanks very much cody03:49

maclaudiHi, I have a weird problem, let's say that I'm logged in, I do a "sudo stop gdm" then I go to tty (ctrl-alt-f1), login, and do a "13:37
maclaudisudo start gdm" at that point I get into a login-loop13:37
maclaudiI tried deleting ~/.ICEAuthority as mentioned somewhere on ubuntu forums but to no luck. Basically I just cannot restart gdm or I won't be able to log in anymore13:38
charlie-tcamaclaudi: did you try restarting the entire computer, instead of just gdm?13:42
charlie-tcastopping gdm on a running desktop does disrupt the xserver13:43
maclaudirestarting the pc does the trick, of course. But I was testing some development on a window manager and I just wanted to restart only gdm and reload the custom .Xsession...13:43
maclaudialso, X gets started up again, as I'm prompted again with the login screen. It's just that entering the password brings me back to the login screen13:45
charlie-tcaThe answer is to find what else needs to be restarted after killing the desktop then, which depends on which desktop environment you kill13:46
maclaudibut how is that everything works just fine if, instead of doing "sudo start gdm" I just do "startx"? I thought that internally gdm would also call startx? Therefore all the configuration taking place in the X starting files should happen nonetheless, no?13:48
charlie-tcaIf you change the desktop, you also are changing what gdm is trying to start for login13:54
charlie-tcastartx calls much more than just gdm13:54
charlie-tcagdm is an application by itself. startx requires a lot of things run to work13:54
maclaudiso I could reboot, list running applications stop gdm, start gdm, list running applications and see what I'm missing, correct?13:56
charlie-tcaor just use startx instead of gdm?13:56
maclaudiyes, sure, that is always an option :) - I'll try the listing and see what's going on13:57
maclaudithanks for the tips!13:57
abhirockshi, i'm new here13:57

maclaudiok, I'm back, apparently there are two differences: 1) /bin/sh /etc/init.d/ondemand background it's not restarted 2) /usr/bin/gnome-keyring-daemon --start --foreground --components=secrets is already running14:13
maclaudiI don't know what the ondemand does, the 2) maybe should be killed as well after stopping gdm?14:13
charlie-tcaI don't know. I don't go that deep into something that isn't broken14:18
charlie-tcaWhat is wrong with using startx if it works to make it restart?14:18

roastedHow heavily based on gtk 2 is XFCE?16:48
knomexfce uses gtk everywhere16:49
roastedso if I put in a gnome 3 ppa will I make xfce act up?16:49
knomei don't know about that. charlie-tca might have some insight16:50
roastedping charlie-tca16:50
roastedthanks knome :)16:51
roastedI want to use gnome 3/shell but I want that stable DE to use if shell acts up, but with xfce being gtk based I was like ehh that may be bad news.16:51
knomeafaik, there is problems with having gnome3 and xfce parallely installed16:54
knomeor at least, getting gnome3 cleanly uninstalled16:54
roastedI wonder if lxde would be a wiser alternative DE choice16:54
roastedyeah. I had gnome 3 PPA in and did a PPA purge + XFCE install last night. my system is acting STRANGE Now...16:55
knomeparallel to gnome3?16:55
roastedyeah16:55
roastedit went16:55
roasted11.04 + Gnome 3 PPA/Gnome Shell, installed XFCE, PPA purge to Gnome 3.16:55
roastedI figured it would cause issues, but I wanted to try it before redoing the rig.16:56
knomemmh.16:56
knomei think the best DE is any DE alone :)16:56
knomewhat DE that is, is a different thing16:56
roastedwell, I felt kind of stuck16:57
roastedI wanted to use gnome shell, and I love ubuntu, but 11.04 is 2.x based.16:57
roastedso I wanted to bring it up to speed and use it, but it began acting WEIRD on me16:57
roastedthat's when I tried to abort and, meh16:58
knomeyeah...16:58
knomeyou can never count that PPA's or alpha/beta releases are stable16:58
knomesometimes you can't even count that the final releases are stable :)16:58
roastedI hear ya.16:59
roastedI'm on fedora 15 now testing out gnome shell, but this whole anti media codec thing is a real pita16:59
knomei don't think G3 is going to be as good as it can be in the first ubuntu+G3 release16:59
roastedI don't see why it wouldn't be, though. why do you say that?16:59
knomethere are deadlines to meet, and canonical does want to get the release out on time17:00
knomealso, widescale testing (read: first release with new DE version) is different than beta testing17:00
roastedeh, Im not too sure. unity is based on g3, so it would be in their best interest to have a solid g3 platform.17:00
knomeroasted, well, let's say G3/unity generally17:01
knomeroasted, also happened with KDE 4...17:01
roastedKDE 4 wasn't anything against Ubuntu.17:01
roastedKDE 4 was KDE 4.17:01
knomei'm just saying it's really hard to get a new DE version top-notch in it's first release17:01
knomekde 4 was in kubuntu LTS.. :)17:01
knome4.017:01
roastedI agree. I just think Gnome 3 has time now to get solidified, considering other distros are going to start using it and Ubuntu plans to use G3.17:02
knomewe'll see. :)17:02
roastedI'm convinced that 11.10 will bring a better G3/GS experience than 11.04s current PPA...17:02
knomesure17:02
roastedotherwise, helloooooooooo Ubuntu/GS fork...17:02
knomebut is it a good enough experience...17:02
knomecan't be perfect, and that's nothing against the ubuntu or g3 developers17:03
knomethat's just really hard17:03
roastedin their defense, though... this seems to be relatively stable17:03
roastedfor being in its infancy17:03
knomethat's a good sign17:03
knomebut there will be bugs17:04
knomeeven in xfce ;)17:04
roastedI mean I have a few crashes now and then, but a quick ALT F2 "r" and hit enter and I'm back.17:04
roastedThe only PITA I've seen with the PPA is this particular laptop has trouble suspending/resuming at times.17:04
roastedso I try to suspend with nothing critical running so if I have to tank it, it's okay17:04
roastedand I love suspend due to this SSD... it's a CR48 google laptop so it's not even a real conventional laptop. some hacking had to take place to get a bios on here, etc.17:04
charlie-tcaum, my guess is gnome3 will make most of Xfce fail!17:07
charlie-tcasince xfce is all gtk2, and gnome3 is all gtk3, I don't think they are compatible at all17:08

Heidtthey seem to be away17:51
Heidt:C17:51
GridCube:)17:53
GridCubejust ask your question on a whole sentence and wait17:53
GridCubesay what you have done, how, and what the problem is, say your model and OS17:53
charlie-tcaHeidt: since almost everybody on IRC is a volunteer, sometimes it takes a little while for someone to be able to talk17:53
psycho_oreosthe use of additional drivers with broadcom wireless devices usually entails the use of broadcom-wl (broadcom's proprietary driver). Support for that isn't usually found on such channels as #bcm-users because the encourage the use of b43 (community derived, reverse engineered and open source driver)17:59
Heidthello i cannot connect to internet on xubuntu, i installed my driver through a ethernet cable. now it tells me to click to connect, even though I do, I still am granted no internet access. Can anyone help me with this?18:16
GridCubeHeidt, i meant write that up on that other channel18:16
HeidtI did but they won't grant me access18:18
Heidtthey say they cant give me support18:18
GridCube:) first Heidt you need to take this things whit a calm mind, try to understand that other people is not on your computer, so they dont know what you are talking about, if you take things easy and ask poletely they will help you, like psycho_oreos is trying to do18:20
HeidtAs soon as I joined the channel he gave me a logn message I didn't understand :X18:21
GridCube:) just wait and respond to their questions and they will be able to help you because they understand what you need to have things working, you just need to hel them18:21
Heidtand saying he can't help me18:21
GridCube:) he said to you that there are two tipes of drivers, ones are propietary, that means they cant help you whit those because they didn't make them, the others are free and those they can hel you18:22
HeidtOh okay18:23
HeidtSo does he want me to uninstall the propeitary?18:23
Heidt:S18:23
GridCubewell if you want them to help you, whit what they can, then yes, you can always try again whit the propietary if things don't work18:23
psycho_oreosGridCube, there's actually 5 different drivers for broadcom wireless :) 5 including ndiswrapper18:37

Sysiproblem?19:44
Name141Exception: Cannot download the metalink and therefore the ISO19:45
Name141basically what the error says19:45
charlie-tcaName141: normally, it is a good idea to tell us what the issue is, instead of just a paste19:45
Name141and then doesn't install19:45
Name141I'm trying to install the LTS via Wubi19:45
Name141check the log (which I posted..)19:46
Name141and then stops19:46
charlie-tcalooks like a bad download to me19:46
Name141the md5 checked out19:46
Name141and installed on a virtual machine OK19:46
Sysidownload that metalink from releases.ubuntu.com and place it there19:46
Name141inside of the ISO extract folder or C:\ubuntu ?19:47
charlie-tcathen wubi is broken, since you have many squashfs failures in it19:47
Name141Sysi: http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/MD5SUMS-metalink ?19:48
Sysiwhat charlie-tca said19:48
Name141:/19:49
Name141http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/ubuntu-10.04.2-desktop-i386.metalink also is there.19:49
Sysiwhat file is missing and where, you got ansver19:50
Name141I do?19:50
Name141I have no idea how to replace the metalink files manually or where to put them19:52
Sysiit says the path in the log19:52
Name141 File "\lib\wubi\backends\common\backend.py", line 331, in download_iso ?19:52
Name141oh C:\ubuntu\install I guess19:53
Name141That doesn't help anything to place it in C:\ubuntu, when the installer just goes along and says it needs to remove the old install first.19:58
Name141(thus deleting C:\ubuntu)19:58
xubuntu526=)20:04
Name141Running Wubi.exe outside of the ISO extract folder produces the same erorr also.20:18
Name141Sounds like wubi can't download whatever it needs.20:19

exsi changed the menu into /etc/xdg/menus/xfce-applications.menu21:19
exsand after that the standard menu is like xfce-applications.menu21:20
exsbut i want the old standard menu21:20
charlie-tcaThen you would have to change it to whatever it used to be.21:20
charlie-tcaYou changed the actual default menu file. Only you can change the file back21:20
exshttp://www.rudolfschmidt.com/upload/Bildschirmfoto_-_22.06.2011_-_22:20:41.png21:21
exscharlie-tca, i dont know where the old standard menu file is21:21
charlie-tcaYou had to work pretty hard to change that file. I have no fix for it, since that is the file we would build the menu from21:22
charlie-tcaThe old standard menu file is gone, changed by your self21:22
charlie-tcaMaybe you could copy that file from the live cd, but any changes/application additions will not be in it then.21:23
